Rashford struggling for minutes under AmorimAdmitted he is ready for a new challengeWarned January transfer will be difficultFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Rashford’s situation at United has taken a troubling turn, with the England international excluded from coach Ruben Amorim's squad for three of their last four matches. Amid this turmoil, Rashford expressed his desire for a “new challenge,” with his future at Old Trafford appearing increasingly uncertain. Amorim has confirmed that Rashford will also miss United’s upcoming Premier League clash against table-toppers Liverpool, citing illness as the latest reason for his absence.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesWHAT SHEARER SAID

Former England captain Alan Shearer has offered his perspective on Rashford’s struggles and he believes that his slump is a phase that can only be overcome with dedication and a positive mindset.

Speaking to Shearer said: "For Rashford, hard work and the correct attitude will see him get back to his best. I don’t know what’s gone on, but something must have happened for him to do that interview and say that it’s best for him to leave Old Trafford. You can’t just flick a switch and get back to your best form, we all have difficult periods where you might not be playing or can’t find the back of the net. There’s only one way to get through that; and that’s to get your head down, work hard and then things should change for the better. I think that it’s too early to talk about his England career – he needs to sort himself out and the club needs to sort themselves out as well.

"I don’t think that he can afford yet to be looking at an England career, which has gone pretty stale. He hasn’t been picked for such a long time now, and he hasn’t been playing recently, so I don’t think that anyone can entertain any England talk yet with him."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reports suggest United may propose a swap deal to acquire Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, in exchange for Rashford. With a release clause of £62 million ($77m), Osimhen would be an expensive addition, but United hope to reduce the financial burden by including Rashford in the negotiation.

Shearer, however, remains sceptical as he believes that such a transaction will be highly complex and challenging to execute in the January window.

"There have been reports about a swap deal with Napoli for Rashford with Victor Osimhen going to Old Trafford. We’ve seen other players go to Serie A and get their careers going. However, I think that where Marcus is concerned, he’d have to look at every option – to see whether one fits or suits him, as well as Manchester United, which is perhaps the bigger consideration," he said.

"Whether that can be done in the next month or so, or whether he’s going to try and force his way back into the Man Utd starting eleven, I don’t know. I do get the idea that it would be very difficult to get a deal done, because of all the different angles and parties involved with the deal. I do think that it will be difficult to get a deal done this January, regardless of a loan or a permanent deal. It's a really difficult transfer to do. There’s a lot to do and so many aspects to a transfer. First of all, it’s about agreeing on a fee, secondly, agreeing to a salary – he’s on a huge wage right now at Man Utd and I’d be amazed if somebody in the Premier League would be willing to match that."

GOAL/GettyWHAT NEXT FOR RASHFORD?

The January transfer window offers an opportunity for resolution, but time is limited. Whether United decide to sell, swap, or retain Rashford, a decision needs to be made to avoid further distractions. Until then, Amorim’s primary focus must be on addressing United’s on-field issues as the team has gone four matches without a victory and faces the daunting task of taking on league leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

'I would want to make sure the players' families can get to Australia' – Strauss

“I think it is unrealistic to expect players to go over there for months on end without their family seeing them”

Andrew Miller10-Aug-202118:29

‘It’s a warning shot to sport to take mental health seriously’

Andrew Strauss believes that a compromise can still be reached whereby England’s cricketers will be allowed to bring their families with them on this winter’s Ashes tour of Australia, but says it would be “unrealistic” to expect the players to embark on such an arduous campaign without being able to see their loved ones for months on end.Strauss, who captained England’s last victorious tour of Australia in 2010-11, stopped short of echoing the sentiments of his fellow Ashes-winning captains, Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook, both of whom have questioned whether the tour can take place in the current circumstances, and instead insisted the onus was on the English and Australian boards to work out a solution with the Australian government.”No, I wouldn’t want a postponement, I would want to make sure that the players’ families can get there,” Strauss said during an event to promote the forthcoming #RedForRuth day at Lord’s. “The last thing anyone wants is players having to make that choice between ‘my family can’t come and therefore I’m not going to go’ or ‘I’m going to go’.”The solution to this is to find some sort of middle ground between the Australian Government, Cricket Australia, and the ECB, to make it as easy as possible for families to get out there and to have as few restrictions as possible when they are over there.”The ECB last week issued a joint statement with the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), saying it is committed to “putting player and staff welfare as the main priority”, amid concerns about the burden on multi-format players such as Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Jos Buttler – all of whom are likely to have to travel directly to Australia from the T20 World Cup in the UAE.Related

Pietersen: Four-month Ashes tour without families is "utter madness"

Dom Bess 'would never turn Ashes down'

Australia’s Covid-19 entry and quarantine rules are among the strictest in the world, and when the IPL was postponed earlier this year, Australia’s own players were required to make a stopover in the Maldives rather than fly directly home. Last year a number of English players pulled out of the Big Bash due to concerns around bubble fatigue, and while Dom Bess is one potential tourist to have insisted he would “never, ever turn down” an Ashes call-up, Kevin Pietersen recently expressed the view that the winter’s proposed circumstances were “utter madness”.”Of course we all understand, having been through the pandemic here for the last 18 months, that this stuff isn’t easy,” Strauss added. “[It requires] setting precedent and all that sort of stuff, but I do think it is unrealistic to expect players to go over there for months on end without their family seeing them, especially with what’s gone on over the last 18 months and all the time they’ve had spend away from their families in bubbles.”I think that’s going to be asking them to go one step too far, and some sort of compromise needs to be reached. That’s what everyone should be working towards at the moment, rather than worrying about something that may or may not happen.”More immediately, however, Strauss has less sympathy for the shortcomings of England’s batters in their recent performances against New Zealand and India, in particularly his successors at the top of the order – Dom Sibley, Rory Burns and Zak Crawley – all of whom have struggled for consistent runs of late.”It is a case of ‘must do better’,” Strauss said. “It’s been very tough. You’ve got to go back a long time to see conditions that have been as challenging for opening batsmen. But ultimately, that’s what they’re in the job to do and someone at some stage will grab that opportunity with both hands”We’ve seen instances where Burns, Sibley and Crawley – all three of them – have been able to do it, but as we know, the key to having a long England career is doing it consistently. We haven’t seen that, so that’s a challenge for them.”They’re no different to myself and Alastair Cook and Mike Atherton and Graham Gooch when we started, it’s a huge challenge and you either pass that challenge, or you don’t and someone else gets a go.”Andrew Strauss leads the teams out to mark Ruth Strauss Foundation Day•Getty ImagesThat someone could yet be Haseeb Hameed, who has been part of England’s Test squad since the New Zealand tour, and could be in line for his first Test appearance since the tour of India in 2016-17, where he impressed as a 19-year-old in three Tests before suffering a broken hand and a subsequent dip in form.”The selectors have always got that challenge around when’s the right time to take someone out of the action,” Strauss added. “That’s often dependent on a hunch or an opinion that the coach might have, around where they are psychologically and how well they’re playing off the pitch, in the nets etc.”I’ve always felt generally it’s better to give one more Test than one too few Tests,” he added. “But I was up [at Trent Bridge] last week and I was looking at Haseeb Hameed in the nets and he looked very impressive. Not that that means anything, as we know, but I’m sure he’ll be chomping at the bit to get an opportunity and if they don’t make the change this week, then I think that top order will know that they’re in the last-chance saloon.”The second day of the Lord’s Test will once again be dedicated to the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which was set up in memory of Strauss’s wife, and mother to his two sons Sam and Luca, who died in December 2018 from a rare form of lung cancer. The ground will turn red to raise awareness of the charity which provides much-needed support for other families faced with the impending loss of a parent, and Strauss said the circumstances of the Covid pandemic was likely to have made their work all the more important.”We were blown away last year by how engaged everyone got with the day virtually,” he said, after the pandemic caused England’s home summer to be played behind closed doors. “But it’s not quite the same when you’re in an empty stadium and the voices are echoing around the ground, so it’s going to be an incredible spectacle this year. We’re just hoping that people remain engaged with the day itself, by wearing red and showing their support for what we’re doing.”We know that this is relevant in so many people’s lives, and maybe even more relevant given what’s been going on over the last 18 months or so,” he added. “We feel like we’re a little bit closer to death, in a way, which is not a nice thing to say but perhaps we are.”Strauss, who stepped down from his role as England Men’s director of cricket in 2018 to focus on his family, has since made a return to the sport, both as a commentator on Sky Sports and as chair of the ECB’s Cricket Committee. However, due to his immersion in the Foundation’s activities, he says he doesn’t envisage himself making a full-time return to cricket administration any time soon.”One of the big learnings I’ve had, without getting too deep, is how important purpose is in life,” Strauss said. “We are all on this earth only a certain period of time and, certainly, as a retired ex-cricketer, where your purpose was very apparent when you’re playing cricket, it’s not necessarily quite so apparent when you finish. The Foundation has given me a real motivation and desire and drive to make that a success, and that helps me every single day, to be honest.”For more information on the Ruth Strauss Foundation, and for details of #RedForRuth day, click here

Aston Villa braced for Jacob Ramsey swap offer involving £20m Serie A star

Aston Villa are braced to receive an offer from a European heavyweight that would see them given the chance to sign a £20m-rated star in exchange for Jacob Ramsey, according to a recent report.

The Villans were a very busy side during the summer, and while they have made a strong start to the season, the club’s hierarchy are still looking into possible transfers that can be made now and in 2025.

Aston Villa send officials to scout £63m double signing, Emery's a big fan

Unai Emery is keen for Aston Villa to sign two players from the same club.

1 ByBrett Worthington Sep 18, 2024 Aston Villa transfer news

Villa brought in eight new players during the summer months, but they are now considering making it nine with an out-of-the-window transfer. According to a recent report, Villa are considering whether to make a move for Yusuf Yazici. The midfielder is without a club after leaving French side Lille at the end of last season.

Yazici was in Lille for five years, during which time he scored 29 goals and recorded 15 assists in 135 games. The 27-year-old would be unlikely to start a lot at Villa, but the report claims he would be brought in to provide depth and cover behind Morgan Rogers, given how both players are versatile enough to play across the attack.

However, Unai Emery’s side are not the only team interested in signing the free agent, as AFC Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, and Brentford are also keen on the international footballer. Yazici’s agents were said to have offered their client’s services to Villa and others earlier this month, and it seems that the Premier League side have been convinced to further those discussions.

While Villa weigh up a move for Yazici now, looking ahead to the January transfer window, they could be offered the chance to sign a £20 million Serie A star, but only in exchange one of their own.

Aston Villa braced for Ramsey-Dumfries swap bid

According to Inter Live, relayed by TBR Football, Inter Milan are ready to tempt Aston Villa into signing Dumfries in exchange for Ramsey. Rasmey is a product of Villa’s academy, breaking into the first team during the 2020/21 season, but Villa may have a fight on their hands to keep the player.

This report states that Inter manager Simone Inzaghi is “crazy” about signing Ramsey, and they are now prepared to use Dumfries as bait to sign the young midfielder. Ramsey scored in midweek for Villa in the Champions League and is considered a key player for them, but Inter will hope the offer of Dumfries, who Emery is said to be a fan of, will help seal a deal.

Dumfries, who is rated at 24 million euros, which is roughly £20 million, has been with the Serie A champions since 2021, when he joined the club from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

The 28-year-old, who ranks in the top four per cent vs other full backs by winning over two aerial duels per 90 minutes, was a key player for Inter last season, playing 31 times in Serie A, scoring four goals and recording five assists. He has yet to start a game for Inter this season but did score last weekend in their 1-1 draw with Monza.

Plymouth sacked Rooney on TuesdayFans urge Rooney to quit coachingPlymouth winless in their last nine matchesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

On the final day of the year, Plymouth finally decided to sack manager Rooney after a series of poor results in the Championship in the 2024-25 campaign. The Pilgrims won just four of their first 23 matches in the Championship under the Manchester United legend and currently find themselves at the bottom of the league table. The final blow came last weekend when Plymouth lost to Oxford United 2-0, after which they decided to end their association with the 39-year-old.

AdvertisementWHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Fans were quick to react to the ex-England captain's sacking as they mocked his coaching journey so far. Birmingham fans also reminded Plymouth that they had warned them about Rooney's track record as a head coach.

An X handle named Sample wrote: "This man should just retire and return his coaching licence."

A fan named Dean wrote: "That’s Rooney's last job in football who ever appointed him deserves the sack as well."

James Hamilton advised Rooney to quit football management as he said: "If I was him I would call it a day in management and become a regular on the overlap."

A handle named Voodoo said in a message to the Plymouth board: "You had all the warnings and ignored them. Then you delayed this by at least a month, so we're literally 24 hours away from the transfer window without a coach. Absolute cluster-F."

A Birmingham fan mocked Plymouth by writing: "Why would you even give him the job to begin with? We all warned you. You seen it for yourself too?"

An X handle named AJ added: "If he ever gets a job in coaching ever again serious questions need to be asked."

The former Red Devils forward has endured a frustrating journey as a manager. He first took charge of Derby County in the 2020-21 season and by the summer of 2022, the club faced relegation from the Championship. His second stint at D.C. United lasted two seasons and in his final year at the club, the team finished at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference. He then moved back to the Championship and took over at Birmingham City but that spell lasted just 83 days, and the Blues were eventually relegated to League One in the 2023-24 campaign.

Gakpo just distracted everyone from how good £34m Liverpool star was

Happy returns for birthday boy Arne Slot. Liverpool breezed past AC Milan at the San Siro in their first taste of Champions League action this season.

Liverpool’s centre-halves showed the likes of Diogo Jota how to score, with both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate heading past Mike Maignan before half-time, cancelling out Christian Pulisic’s ferocious early strike.

Virgil van Dijk scores for Liverpool

Jota endured another testing contest, having not looked near his clinical best in recent weeks. He was eclipsed by the performance of Cody Gakpo, whose dynamism was far too much for the Milan defence to contain.

Cody Gakpo's performance vs AC Milan

Gakpo’s starting to show that he’s best equipped to wreak destruction on Liverpool’s opponents when placed on the left. He was rather brilliant under the European lights on his first start of the season.

The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle handed him a whopping 9/10 match score, writing: ‘Looked threatening whenever he had the ball and was too strong and powerful for Milan at times with his running and dribbling. Had a few shots that worked Maignan in the first half and low cross almost brought a goal from Salah. Brilliant run set up Szoboszlai for the third.’

Liverpool players congratulate Cody Gakpo

It was indeed the upswing in energy and enterprise that was the most attractive part of the Dutchman’s display. We’ve all seen flashes of brilliance over the past couple of years but he doesn’t mesh it all together with the consistency that is desired.

He claimed a wonderful assist for Dominik Szoboszlai’s second-half goal, carving the hosts open like a shark through a school of fish. As per Sofascore, Gakpo hit the target twice and made two key passes, also winning seven of 11 contested duels and completing four of his seven dribbles.

Slot revealed post-match that his countryman was supposed to start against Nottingham Forest last weekend but wasn’t quite fit enough, and Luis Diaz thus reprised his role.

Could have been the difference-maker, that. It’s great to see the Reds boasting such strength in depth though, with Gakpo’s excellent effort diverting eyes from the resurgent Mohamed Salah, who appears to have put his one-match blue patch behind him.

Mo Salah was quietly excellent

Salah was rubbish during Saturday’s Anfield loss against Forest, really, really, rubbish. But that’s okay, the Premier League great can be afforded an off day. After all, he had previously posted three goals and three assists across three matches to start Slot’s tenure off with a bang.

The £34m signing was far more like his imperious self on the continental stage, albeit finishing the match without a goal or an assist to his name – though he did almost everything that he could to achieve that.

Salah hit the woodwork twice – twice – while threatening with some sharp deliveries and a combativeness that isn’t always a part of the Egyptian’s repertoire. Pit his attempt against that of last weekend, and it’s pleasing to see normal service resumed.

Okay, he might not have rediscovered his shooting boots just yet, but the 32-year-old superstar did raise the bar across all the meaningful underlying metrics.

Big update on Sean Dyche’s Everton future as potential sack date shared

A significant update has emerged regarding Sean Dyche’s future as Everton manager, with the date of his possible sacking revealed.

Dyche under huge pressure at Everton

Dyche has been in charge at Goodison Park since January 2023, and while he deserves credit for ensuring the Blues haven’t suffered relegation from the Premier League, he is now under real pressure to keep his job.

Everton have only accumulated one point from their opening five league games in 2024/25 to date, coming away to Leicester City last weekend, and failure to win at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon would see more fans lose patience with the manager.

With the pressure building on Dyche all the time, it is only natural that potential successors are now emerging to come in and replace him, including ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri. The Italian resigned as head coach of Lazio back in March and could be an intriguing appointment by incoming owners The Friedkin Group, who will know him well from their experience in Serie A with Roma.

Graham Potter has also been mentioned as an option, as he still looks for a new job, while current stand-in England boss Lee Carsley has been linked with the Everton job too. It remains to be seen if he could be given the Three Lions role full-time, however, having impressed in charge to date.

Potential Dyche sack date revealed

According to a significant update from The Boot Room, Dyche could be sacked as Everton boss before October’s international break, with the Englishman very much in last chance territory, which would mean ending his reign on approximately Monday October 7th.

The report states that he “has been the subject of a vote of confidence but sources believe that he will be lucky to be still in charge” by the time the Blues’ international players return from representing their countries.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

This seems a fair situation, in truth, with Dyche just about having enough credit in the bank to remain in charge for the time being, but rightly finding himself under lots of scrutiny. Performances and results have been nowhere near good enough so far this season, and blowing 2-0 leads in back-to-back games at home to Bournemouth and away to Aston Villa suggests there is a weak mentality on show, which starts with the manager at any club.

Dyche feels like he is hanging by a thread at this point, and he will know how vital getting at least a draw against Palace this weekend is. The Eagles aren’t exactly flying themselves, having been outplayed by Manchester United in their 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park last Saturday, so this should be seen as a good chance to get points on the board.

Then comes the visit of Newcastle United on October 5th, prior to the internationals, so Dyche essentially has these two matches to save his job, if the update is to be believed.
