Steven Croft, Luke Wood fifties push Lancashire into ascendancy

Gloucestershire struggling three-down at close though bad weather looms

ECB Reporters Network28-Jun-2022Half-centuries from Steven Croft and Luke Wood helped Lancashire move into a potentially winning position on the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol.Croft was dismissed for 80 and Wood 50 as the visitors extended their first innings total from an overnight 226 for four to 402 all out, a lead of 65. Ryan Higgins claimed three for 55.By the close, Gloucestershire had struggled to 99 for three in their second innings, just 34 in front, with Miles Hammond unbeaten on 25. But rain is forecast tomorrow and could come to their aid.The day began with Croft one short of his fifty, which came up with a two off Matt Taylor in the second over, It had occupied 112 balls and featured seven fours.Hopes of a Lancashire acceleration dipped when Phil Salt, having added just five to his overnight score of 33, aimed a loose drive at Tom Price and was pinned lbw on the back pad.George Balderson helped Croft add 48 for the sixth wicket in just under 15 overs before the latter fell to the second new ball, edging a drive off Ryan Higgins through to wicketkeeper James Bracey.Croft had faced 154 balls and extended his boundary count to 11. With only seven runs added, Balderson, on 20, fell in similar fashion to another outside edge, giving Higgins his third wicket. At 289 for seven, Lancashire were still 48 runs behind. But Wood brought up the 300 and a third batting point with a pulled four off David Payne.By lunch, the score had progressed to 317 for seven and the afternoon session saw Wood and Tom Bailey continue a profitable partnership. They had added 67 to put their side in front by 19 when Bailey, who had taken the dominant role with 8 fours in his 40, fell leg-before to a delivery from left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar, which drifted in.By then, Lancashire had settled for three batting points and were intent on building a meaningful lead. Will Williams contributed 12 to another useful stand of 43 with Wood before being caught at cover off Payne.Wood went to his half-century off 108 balls, with seven fours, but perished soon afterwards, lofting a catch to deep mid-wicket off Payne, who finished with three for 81.Price had figures of three for 80 in a Gloucestershire seam attack, who bowled wholeheartedly and without much fortune on the slow pitch. The hosts reduced the deficit of 65 by 20 in their second innings before George Scott edged Bailey and fell to a slip catch for the second time in the match. It said much about the surface that Lancashire turned to the spin of Jack Morley after only 11 overs, five of which had been sent down by Williams as a cost of only a single. But it was another seamer, Balderson, who made the second breakthrough when Glenn Phillips, on nine, shouldered arms to a ball that nicked his off stump.First-innings centurion Chris Dent looked in control again, moving to 23, but then edged a defensive shot off Williams to wicketkeeper Salt to put his side in peril at 73 for three. The light was poor in the closing overs, which may have explained why Bailey switched to off-spin as Hammond and Bracey saw Gloucestershire to the close.

Their next Lampard: Chelsea planning massive bid to sign "world-class" ace

The cogs are whirring down at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea offloading some spare parts and gearing up to bring in some new talent to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad.

Fourth in the Premier League after 20 matches, the Blues have showcased clear signs of progress this year, though a recent four-match winless run has illuminated the chinks that still need covering to challenge for the biggest prizes.

Last season, under Mauricio Pochettino, it felt like Chelsea blew hot and cold as they fought to stabilise the club after several years of dysfunction, but with everything coming together nicely under their Italian coach’s tactics, it’s time to start getting excited.

Much hinges on Chelsea’s transfer dealings this year though. The Premier League feels uber-competitive at the top end right now, and blunders could knock the west Londoners down several pegs.

Chelsea's transfer plans for 2025

Chelsea are looking to bolster their backline because of injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana, the latter of whom could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

Wesley Fofana for Chelsea

Renato Veiga is linked with a permanent exit and Ben Chilwell and Cesare Casadei are also expected to leave Stamford Bridge this month, so there’s every chance that Chelsea are going to be welcoming a defender through the door.

Chelsea are rarely restricted to one avenue, however, with efforts underway to sign Bayern Munich prospect Mathys Tel. This could also come together this month, for Vincent Kompany’s side want Christopher Nkunku, who has only started three Premier League fixtures in 2024/25.

Thought the Blues were done across those two departments? Well, as it happens, Maresca could also bring in a new player to complete his midfield. He’s one of Manchester United’s biggest talents.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Chelsea eyeing Premier League talent

Indeed, Chelsea are interested in signing Kobbie Mainoo this year. The Carrington-made talent has encountered delays regarding a new contract with Manchester United and the Blues could take advantage.

According to The Athletic, the Red Devils could be tempted into selling Mainoo to help comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, with the 19-year-old approaching the penultimate year of his £20k-per-week deal.

This all sounds rather interesting, but United will not want to lose their homegrown star in an ideal world. Fortunately for them, he’s set to cost a pretty penny with reports from Sky Germany suggesting that a massive bid of £70m is now being lined up by Todd Boehly and Co.

What Kobbie Mainoo would bring to Chelsea

Manchester United share a likeness with Chelsea in consistently churning out exciting prospects to blend into the mix, and Mainoo is certainly the homemade poster boy of the current fold under Ruben Amorim.

Described as a “world-class talent” by journalist Ryan Adsett, Mainoo has often been a beacon of hope at the Theatre of Dreams since bursting onto the scene at the start of last season, becoming a key player for Erik ten Hag.

But if United are unable to agree to a new contract that Mainoo feels reflects his ever-growing influence, Chelsea will be more than ready to add to their midfield ranks, especially since Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been informed that he can look for a new outfit.

He’s turning into the complete player, with an energetic and intelligent skill set blending against a big-game aura that has already seen Mainoo dominate in last season’s FA Cup final, notch six goal contributions for United and even receiving ten Three Lions caps.

His development and Chelsea’s eagerness to bring him over to Stamford Bridge in the early stage of his exciting career might even see Mainoo thrive as Maresca’s very own version of Frank Lampard.

Mainoo might not be a player with the goalscoring consistency to rival his iconic countryman, but he’s impressive across every area and this was the nuts and bolts of Lampard’s quality across a long and storied career.

See below. Mainoo has taken to the senior stage like a natural for the most part, showcasing his range of passing, confident and consistent desire to drive forward and defensive arsenal too.

It’s also important to remember that Mainoo is only 19 years old having burst onto the scene at a similar age to Lampard, already endowed with explosiveness that could be channelled and streamlined under Maresca’s wing, especially given that Moises Caicedo could help lessen his load from a defensive standpoint.

As per FBref, Mainoo actually ranks among the top 2% of central midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for successful take-ons (1.74) per 90, making a telling comment on his forward-thinking mindset and athleticism.

This is certainly something that Lampard championed on the field, intelligent and aware of his surroundings as he scored 211 goals and added 147 assists for Chelsea, still standing as their club-record scorer.

Kobbie Mainoo

Chelsea need to make their move. One of the key factors behind Lampard’s success at the club is that he was signed from West Ham United for £11m in 2001 when he was just 22, still at the start of his career. The same method must be applied to Mainoo, which could be made in accordance with Maresca’s vision.

Mainoo may not be as offensively destructive as Lampard was in the Premier League, but the Man United ace is a confident and assured player, competent across every area of the midfield game.

The 6-foot star’s physicality and running power do carry a certain semblance to Lampard in his heyday, surging from the centre into dangerous positions.

In any case, Chelsea need to get this one over the line.

Swepson's wicket wait: 'I'm not going to lie, it plays on your mind'

The legspinner played a key role in Galle after toiling on the Pakistan tour

AAP04-Jul-2022Mitchell Swepson has frankly admitted doubts crept into his mind during his 514-ball wait for a third Test wicket.Swepson justified his selection as Australia’s second spinner in the team’s series-opening win over Sri Lanka, taking five wickets for the match in Galle. But it wasn’t before a harsh introduction to Test cricket. He took 2 for 266 across his maiden two Tests on flat Pakistan wickets, including a barren 81.4 overs without a wicket to end the series.”I’m not going to lie, it plays on your mind,” Swepson said.  “It definitely creeps in. ‘Why aren’t I taking wickets? What am I doing wrong here?’Related

“At the same time in Pakistan I know it was about trying to stay effective. A big focus of ours was trying to control the tempo of the game. That was what I had to bring my mind back to if the results weren’t at my end.”Swepson is expected to hold his spot as Nathan Lyon’s spin partner for the final Test in Galle starting Friday, holding out a fit-again Jon Holland. His success in Sri Lanka has been a long time in the making. He went on an academy tour to India in 2015, and was also a member of Australia’s Test squad for the 2017 Test series in that country. He has since worked on developing his bowling for sub-continent conditions, well aware that is where his chance would come. Swepson has tended to bowl with a “squarer” seam in Sri Lanka than he does Australia, forgoing some drift but picking up more natural variation in his spin.”You’ve got to adapt to the surface,” Swepson said. “Over here I’ve found that different paces react differently off the wickets. It’s a matter of flight, it’s a matter what shape you put on the ball, the angle of the seam.”I found it quite effective in my first spell bowling with a squarer seam, not as over the top of the ball. Some were skidding past the left-hander’s edge, some were ripping into his gloves.”Swepson is happy to push the cause for Australia playing two spinners back home this summer, having not picked a wristspinner at home since Brad Hogg in 2007-08. But the 28-year-old is more realistically accepting his next chance will come in India in February.”I’ve obviously got one eye on India. That’s definitely a goal of mine. And a goal of this group is to get a series win over there,” he said.”I love bowling with Gaz [Lyon]…it’s great having an offspinner and a legspinner working in tandem [spinning it different ways]. Again, biased opinion of mine. But I think it’s something we don’t see enough of in cricket.”

'There's potential sitting there' – Emma Hayes and U.S. soccer cultivating the next generation of stars with U23 Futures camp

The USWNT have restored the U23 camp, creating an environment to cultivate the next crop of future stars

It was the Dutch midfield that sparked the idea for Emma Hayes. The USWNT coach watched her side narrowly beat the Netherlands at the end of 2024, but the result didn't accurately reflect the performance. The Netherlands out-possessed, out-passed and outshot the USWNT.

After the game, when breaking it all down, Hayes came to a clear realization: that Dutch team, one that ran rings around the U.S., had simply been playing together for longer. And while she couldn't change that in the present, she could certainly piece together a brighter future.

And so, the United States' U23 national team was reborn. Previously a power at the youth level, Hayes has converted the squad into the ultimate reserve team, a top-to-bottom system that draws on her club background to help keep the national team op top of the game for years to come.

And so far, the results are encouraging.

"She's definitely prioritized us developing this pool of players," Lisa Cole, who is running the current U23 camp for Hayes, told GOAL. "We're a very large country, so this just provides us with an opportunity see players that are up and coming in another environment that is replicating what WNT is doing in their environment."

Getty ImagesA camp steeped in history

Youth camps, historically, are a tricky thing to figure out. To some, the perception is that they are sympathy call-ups, a place where those who didn't quite make the cut for the big time kick a ball around for 10 days.

Prior to January, the U.S. women U23s hadn't had a single camp in more than a year. Their last fixture was in 2023. That was in stark contrast with the past, when the USWNT made good use of their U23 setup. They won nine Nordic Cups, the annual tournament organized for U23 teams at an international level. Legends in the women's soccer space such as Jill Ellis, Laura Harvey and Randy Waldrum coached the sides, while some of the best talent in college soccer made the roster.

Hayes has only been in the job for 11 months, but has quickly made changes to restore the program. Cole, a long-time youth scout who has worked with college, club and international teams, knows how valuable it can be.

"Each environment teaches you something else. So if I go into the WNT and I'm a young player, then how I interact with the other players and my role within team is one thing, but we need these players to potentially start to develop their leadership. We need them to start to be impact players and not to defer," she said.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesAn eye towards the future

Hayes' work, in full, started at the beginning of 2025. With the U.S. completing their goal of winning the Olympics last summer in Paris, it was time to look towards the future. The next major round of fixtures doesn't come until the 2027 World Cup. This U.S. team will need to evolve and take form by then. One of the easiest ways to ensure everything is in place, then, is to take the youth camps seriously.

That began with the advent of the Futures Camp in January. Effectively a revamped U23 side, it gave Hayes the opportunity to see the scope of talent available to her in full. She took back-to-back training sessions, overseeing the senior and youth sides – while also going about the standard details of preparing for matches.

“I love developing,” Hayes said. “I almost feel like we’ve had a little bit of a lost generation that might not have had some of the exposure that some top nations. I’m desperate to look at ways to bridge that gap because we can’t wholeheartedly just rely on domestic play to do that… we have to give international experiences to these players."

That camp wasn't easy for the players. Everything, top to bottom, emulated the sessions Hayes would run with the first team. The only difference? Only 14 of the 24 called up were full time pros – the rest played in the U.S. college or club systems.

"There were definitely a lot of learning opportunities," Angel City defender Savy King told GOAL. "Which I think was really great, and especially being coached in that camp, specifically by Emma and Denise [Reddy] was awesome to kind of get the full experience with exactly what it would be like to be a part of the full team."

USA TODAY SportsTraining sessions

This time out, Hayes couldn't run both camps. The USWNT endured a disappointing SheBelieves Cup showing in February. Flaws needed to be addressed. So, her focus is sternly on the full team. But she and assistant coach Denise Reddy have still been involved. Hayes addressed the players on day one, and has watched the first two training sessions. She is also in constant communication with Cole. Meanwhile, Reddy has ensured that the two training sessions line up.

"The only thing that changes is the number of people standing around the pitch. Everything we're doing on the pitch looks exactly like what we would do within the WNT environment," Cole said.

This whole thing is meticulous. They go through similar cycles of training: preparation, passing drills, and exercises. The language used to describe training sessions is similar, while the basic tactical principles remain intact.

"We want to be aggressive, we want to dominate the game, and getting to see that early on is very helpful for these younger players," PSG center back Eva Gaetino said. "And I also think that in terms of the cultural piece, like having a very high standard for ourselves and holding us to that, and pursuing us to be the best versions of ourselves."

The players, ultimately, can feel the impact.

"The same exact principles are being instilled in us that are being instilled in the full national team, it's really great to have," Gaetino said.

Getty ImagesAn already established pipeline

And the early results are already being shown. After Tierna Davidson dropped out due to injury, Hayes called upon one of her January Futures Camp attendees, Gisele Thompson, to fill her spot. Meanwhile, Gaetino and King have appeared with both teams – and experienced both sides of things. Mia Fishel, returning from an ACL injury, is playing with the U23s while she recovers, and figures to have a spot in the full team once she's back to her best.

But there's an understanding that the whole setup is fluid. Going from one to the other is neither promotion nor relegation. King trained with the first team in February, and is now with the U23s.

"I think it's just about exposure, and then obviously also being here and getting international games at the highest level is also super important. So I think that it's kind of run side by side," King said. "Obviously the goal is to get to the first team, but I think that being here is a great gateway."

There is the added benefit, of course, that those who have gone from the first team to the U23s are able to guide a younger generation.

"You have to be vocal," Gaetino said. "You have to direct the people around you. So I think just naturally I've kind of stepped into that role, and again, like I've just had some more time with the principals and with the structure of what they're asking of us. So I just, I'm trying my best just to help everyone around me."

And that's part of the appeal for Cole and Co. The whole camp is as much about mentality as it is about technical quality.

Aston Villa agree £6m deal to sign another new star; Unai Emery was key

Having already sealed the arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa have now reportedly agreed a deal to sign a defensive reinforcement from La Liga.

Aston Villa transfer news

As Malen arrived, the man who he replaced headed for the exit door with Jaden Philogene completing his mid-season move to Ipswich Town just a matter of months after rejoining Aston Villa from Hull City. Those in the Midlands will hope that the more experienced Malen will have the desired impact that Philogene failed to make on his return.

Borussia Dortmund'sDonyellMalen

Unai Emery recently spoke about what the Dutchman will add to his side, telling reporters: “He’s always close to the attacking third, close to getting into the opponent’s box to score goals and assists… We will need one player like him as well trying to threaten the opponent in-behind.”

Those behind the scenes at Villa Park have wasted no time admiring their new signing, however, with their focus instantly set on welcoming further reinforcements this month.

Aston Villa could be close to unearthing their next Jack Grealish…

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 18, 2025

Names such as Oscar Mingueza have been mentioned and right-back seems to be the route that the Villans are going down, but it may not be in pursuit of the Celta Vigo man.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth €7m (£6m) to sign Andres Garcia from Levante this month. The right-back has reportedly already spoken to Emery and, therefore, accepted Villa’s proposal as Relevo reported and Romano relayed.

The Levante ace looks set to give Matty Cash plenty of competition for that right-back role, that’s for sure, in a battle that could end with the latter watching on from the bench.

Garcia can push Cash all the way

Just 21 years old, Garcia very much seems like the future of Aston Villa’s right-hand side where he could take over from Cash sooner rather than later. The Poland international remains one of few weaknesses in Emery’s side and if they want to set their sights on Champions League football for the second season running then welcoming a replacement at this stage is no bad idea.

As the stats show, Garcia has had little trouble adding an attacking impetus to the current Levante side in a show of creativity that will only benefit the likes of Ollie Watkins and new signing Malen.

Compared to Cash on the defensive front, meanwhile, the 21-year-old has also impressed. His ability to recover possession is something that should help Emery’s side maintain their dominance and remain on the front foot in the remainder of the campaign.

Whilst top four is currently a little out of their reach, Villa’s January signings could quickly bridge that gap in the Premier League.

Josh Bohannon, Luke Wells turn Lancashire's fortunes around

ECB Reporters Network27-Jul-2022Lancashire 145 (Henry 5-45, Saini 3-63) and 377 for 5 (Bohannon 134, Wells 98, Jones 53*) lead Kent 270 (Leaning 90, Stewart 64, Denly 59, Bailey 6-64) by 252 runsA century from Josh Bohannon and 98 from Luke Wells were the highlights of an extraordinary turnaround in fortunes for Lancashire on day three of their LV=Insurance Division One clash with Kent at Emirates Old Trafford. The opening two days had seen wickets tumble on a regular basis with the hosts beginning their second innings late on Tuesday evening 125 runs behind Kent’s total of 270 and seemingly right up against it on a used pitch which has proved helpful to both teams’ seam bowlers. But in total contrast to what had gone previously just five wickets fell throughout the day as Wells and Bohannon put Lancashire in a position to potentially win, going into the final day with a lead of 252 runs and five wickets in hand after they closed on 377 for 5.Resuming on 2 for 0, batting instantly looked easier for Wells and fellow opener Keaton Jennings with both Matt Henry and Navdeep Saini lacking the bite and accuracy they had enjoyed during Lancashire’s first innings. The opening pair had built a partnership of 54 off 14 overs and it was something of a surprise when Nathan Gilchrist made the breakthrough tempting Jennings to edge stiffly to stand in captain Jack Leaning at second slip for 14.The wicket brought Bolton-born Bohannon to the crease and with both he and Wells enjoying recent centuries, the stage was set for a partnership that could define the match, should Lancashire somehow prevail.Wells took the role of aggressor, moving to 50 for the fifth time in the Championship this season from 69 balls including five fours and so effective was the partnership, that Leaning was forced to turn to the part-time bowlers Joe Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond as his side’s lead began to disappear.Wells and Bohannon continued to score freely after lunch with the latter’s innings full of his trademark pushes through mid-on as Kent began to look increasingly ragged as the afternoon wore on.Bohannon had just reached his half-century when Wells fell agonisingly short of a 22nd first class ton when he edged Saini to a diving Leaning at second slip as the second-wicket partnership ended on 117.Despite the breakthrough there was little respite for Kent as Steven Croft joined Bohannon who was reminding everyone why earlier in the season he was being tipped by many to play for England’s Test side this summer.Lancashire had built a lead of 139 when the 25-year-old brought up his sixth first class century and third of the season off 186 balls with 14 fours with the vital knock coming straight after his match-winning hundred at Northampton last week.Croft, captaining the side due to Dane Vilas’ injured finger, was happy to play second fiddle to Bohannon and the pair had compiled a partnership of 109 for the third wicket when Henry got a delivery to jag back and bowl Croft for a patient 42.Rob Jones was next to enter the fray and he and Bohannon looked to up the scoring rate against a beleaguered attack that was becoming increasingly reliant on Bell Drummond’s accuracy rather than Saini’s waywardness.Bohannon eventually fell for 134, feathering a delivery from Grant Stewart to replacement wicket keeper Ollie Robinson by which time the lead was 228 and showing no sign of slowing down with the only respite coming when Leaning trapped Washington Sundar lbw for 10 just before the close. There was just time for Jones to reach his half-century from 73 balls and with the incoming George Lavelle unbeaten on three, Lancashire will look to bat on tomorrow morning before a positive declaration.

'Desperate situation' – Gary Neville delivers brutal assessment of Man Utd squad after Newcastle humbling as pundit backhandedly insists players ARE 'giving their all'

Man Utd lose 4-1 to Newcastle UnitedNeville gives brutal squad assessmentQuestions whether Amorim's tactics suit playersFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

United are heading for their worst-ever Premier League season, as they have been struggling for form ever since the campaign began, and even Amorim's introduction in December has not helped. On Sunday, the Red Devils suffered a 4-1 loss to Newcastle, with Harvey Barnes scoring a brace sandwiched between goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes. Neville didn't seem to be surprised by what he saw.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT NEVILLE SAID

Speaking on , Neville said: “They're not a very good team. Simple as that. The problem with this group of players is they're giving it their all. I don’t think there’s a lack of effort. They’re so below the standard and quality you need at that football club all over the pitch. Other than Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo maybe, I can’t think of any of them I would hang my hat on.

“It’s a really desperate situation because the squad is so poor on quality. They've got old players, they've got young players who are nowhere near it, they have a group in the middle… It’s a worrying situation.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neville also questioned Amorim's tactical setup since he joined United, as the Portuguese coach has been deploying a three-man defence with uber-offensive wing-backs. However, the approach has not worked so far.

The United legend added: "The system is a problem. I have asked this question for two months. Who are the natural wing-backs, players good enough going forwards who have great energy and players good enough going back? Who are these two players they play behind the striker?

“They need a centre-forward to carry the line – who is that player that is available who would go to Man Utd? There are seven or eight teams at the top of the league who need a striker. You aren’t going to Man Utd ahead of Liverpool or Arsenal. There are massive issues.

“Honestly, you don’t know where to start or build the first step from. There’s a serious amount of time required and good recruitment for that club to get right.”

If reports are to be believed, United are planning a fire sale this summer in order to raise a transfer budget of close to £200 million ($260m) for Amorim to bring his preferred players into the squad. Spurs are languishing in 14th in the Premier League and their clash with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League offers perhaps the last chance for Postecoglou to save his job. Reports suggest that the club are already monitoring potential replacements and have been linked with the likes of Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Fulham's Marco Silva, and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner.

Now, Postecoglou has claimed that there is a "general sentiment" that he will leave the club regardless of whether Spurs manage to pull off an improbable Europa League triumph in Bilbao in May. He cited an article from Daily Mirror journalist John Cross, which presented the idea that winning the competition could be "too little, too late" for the Australian.

WHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Speaking ahead of this week's first leg, Postecoglou said:  "I think that feeling [of motivation] exists, but not because of that (proving people wrong).

"I don't think that's a healthy motivation to have because ultimately you can't win that contest. I just think we're in that position that the good stuff we may do is going to be turned into a glass half full rhetoric and from that perspective I don't think that can be a driver in what we want to do.

"The lads are really keen to bring success to the club, keep driving the principles of what we started this whole journey with, in terms of the football we want to play, really stick together as they have through the toughest of periods and hopefully we've worked our way into a position where we can make an impact on our season, a really disappointing season for us.

"I just think there's a real determination to take the opportunity that they've earned at this point. I don't think you're going to win that argument of convincing people. I think John [Cross] wrote that even if we win it, I'm gone anyway. That's not having a go at you, that's just saying the general sentiment of people. So if you're trying to use that as a motivation, you're not going to win that anyway.

"There's got to be more in it for us and for us what is the most important thing as a group is that we've been through a really tough time but we're still in a position where we can make an impact and you don't know how often you get those opportunities.

"We're in a quarter-final and I don't know how many times the club has been in a quarter-final in European competition. You don't want to let that slip you by or have the wrong mindset going into it. I think the players are handling it well in terms of how they're trying to embrace this challenge. They're going to face a top team but they have the capabilities to overcome that."

Mudryk replacement: Chelsea submit offer to sign a dream Tel alternative

The recent links in the media have been around Chelsea and Bayern Munich, with the German giants interested in taking Christopher Nkunku from the Blues, whilst Enzo Maresca’s side are interested in 19-year-old Mathys Tel in return.

With Chelsea’s recent struggles in front of goal through the festive period, a January addition who can play both on the left and through the middle, has an eye for goal and excellent ball-striking could be exactly what the Blues need to inject some more goal-scoring power into their front line.

Tel has made 12 appearances so far this season for Bayern in all competitions, yet to score a goal or provide an assist in his 351 minutes played.

But there is another young winger who the Chelsea directors and scouting team have taken a liking to, and could act upon during this January window.

Chelsea's January transfer latest

According to reports from Spanish outlet Marca, Chelsea have sent a proposal to Deportivo La Coruna for their Spanish winger, Yeremay Hernandez. The offer is said to be around the €10m (£8.4m) mark as a fixed fee, with bonuses linked to the performance of the youngster.

The 22-year-old has a €20m (£16.8m) release clause according to the reports, but it is currently unknown whether Chelsea would be willing to match this price in order to snap up the young left wing prospect.

Hernandez has made 18 appearances for the LaLiga2 side this season, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 1,428 minutes played.

Hernandez vs Mudryk comparison

Alongside Jadon Sancho, who has been brilliant since joining Chelsea this summer after registering eight goal involvements in 17 games, the Blues also have Mykhailo Mudryk, who is a natural left-sided player, but is currently out through suspension for an unknown period of time.

This could force Chelsea into some decisions in their attacking unit, with the arrival of Hernandez being one of them.

Mudryk has made 15 appearances so far this season for Maresca’s side in all competitions, scoring three goals, providing five assists and totalling 850 minutes played.

When comparing the metrics of both players, Hernandez ranks ahead in eight out of the ten metrics analysed, offering more output with both goals and assists, generating more xG per 90 and being more progressive (especially with his passing, having nearly four more progressive passes than Mudryk per 90).

Hernandez nearly doubles the shot volume of Mudryk, which is another key factor, especially when you consider Sancho (Chelsea’s other left-sided option) only averages 1.30 shots per 90, with 0.33 shots on target per 90.

Maresca could benefit from having another left-wing option who is more direct than Sancho, with a higher shot volume and constantly looking to beat his man in 1v1 scenarios out wide. It’s for no reason that analyst Ben Mattinson has stated that he “plays like a street baller”.

That being said, whether Hernandez – who seemingly offers a dream alternative to the aforementioned Tel – will stay at the club or be loaned to Strasbourg remains to be seen.

Raza: I may not be a fighter pilot, but I am a fighter within myself

After sealing a big chase for Zimbabwe, the batter talks about dealing with pressure and how training for Pakistan Air Force in his youth has shaped his mentality

Mohammad Isam06-Aug-2022Sikandar Raza spent his formative years preparing to become a fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). An eye condition prevented him from becoming one, but the time he spent in his childhood dreaming to be a fighter pilot, and the training he went through in the PAF college, have shaped his outlook in life and cricket to become a fighter, he says.Raza went on to become a software engineer, and then a cricketer after starting quite late in the sport. After nine years in the international circuit, Raza is in red-hot form. In the last few weeks, he has been the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup Qualifiers, the Player of the Series against Bangladesh in the T20I series, and the Player of the Match for his unbeaten 135 against Bangladesh in the first ODI on Friday.Chasing 304, Zimbabwe were 62 for 3 in the 14th over. They hadn’t beaten Bangladesh in 19 ODIs across nine years. The way Raza rescued Zimbabwe from there with his knock of 135 off 109 and took them across the line, it showed he wasn’t too fazed by the pressure.Related

Stats – Zimbabwe's first ODI win against Bangladesh since 2013

“There’s pressure to do well and win the game, there’s pressure. I won’t lie,” Raza told ESPNcricinfo on Friday. “Of course, it helps that I am from an Air Force background. We don’t give up. I get hit, I get hurt, broken fingers, toes, etc. I don’t care. I personally feel it helps spending the three-and-a-half years in PAF college. I will always be a fighter within myself. I couldn’t become a fighter pilot. But I think as a person, I will always be a fighter. The training mentally and physically is paying dividends now.”Zimbabwe were chasing with the knowledge that the hard-hitting Ryan Burl, who suffered a side strain while bowling, may not bat. Raza was batting with the newcomer Innocent Kaia, and against a Bangladesh bowling attack hungry for wickets. He was also fighting pain after an inside edge slammed into his inner thigh earlier.”I usually go out with a blank mind,” Raza said. “I want to watch the ball. It is an ODI so I want to leave well if I can. Just play a couple of shots that will give me my boundary options. Otherwise, I make sure my shape is good. Make sure I am picking the length early enough.Innocent Kaia and Sikandar Raza added 192 runs for the fourth wicket•Associated Press”The innings was starting to flow. Innocent was playing magnificently, so the pressure was off me. We hit a few boundaries and then it was just momentum. The plan was to win the game but we broke it down to small parts. We wanted to achieve those small targets, and take it from there.”Raza was going well until the 25th over when the Zimbabwe pair seemed to have hit a wall. They batted quietly for about five overs but when Raza blasted Mustafizur Rahman down the ground for a six to bring up his half-century, Zimbabwe had turned a crucial corner.”I think the secret to my six-hitting is my cricket bats,” he explained. “I don’t do anything different than what the other guys do. I just have good enough bats.”I look for one or two balls that gives me the boundary. I make sure I time the ball well. Once I start timing the ball well, Allah has blessed me with the fact that if I hit it well, I can clear the big boundaries. Once you have the confidence, and you get the ball that you wanted, it is what it is after that. There’s no real secret, basically.”Raza was also full of praise for Kaia, who struck his maiden hundred in only his fourth ODI. “He played a proper quality and class knock. It was a special innings. We play franchise cricket together. We spend a lot of time with him. I always told him that when the opportunity comes, I know that he will shine. His century was very satisfying to watch from the other end.”This was a big win for Zimbabwe, particularly in a format they have struggled in lately. “It was great to break that shackle. We didn’t beat Bangladesh in nine years,” Raza said. “They were 19-0 up on us. The wins are coming at the right time. India is coming. We are going to Australia. We have the World Cup to look forward to. It is a good time for Zimbabwe.”Raza, however, remained wary about Bangladesh’s quality as an ODI side with two games still left in the series. “We can’t take away the fact that Bangladesh is a big cricket country. They are sitting No. 1 or 2 in the [World Cup Super League] table. They won 2-1 [3-0] in West Indies. I refuse to disrespect Bangladesh. They are a powerhouse. Zimbabwe would love to win the series on Sunday. We want to turn up with the right attitude.”
