England opt to plump 391-run lead

England chose not to enforce the follow-on after Pakistan crumbled for 198, a deficit of 391, in the Old Trafford Test with only their captain, Misbah-ul-Haq reaching a half-century

The Report by David Hopps24-Jul-2016England 589 for 8 dec and 98 for 1 (Cook 49*) lead Pakistan 198 (Misbah 52, Woakes 4-67) by 489 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsA first-innings lead of 391 against the Pakistan side that had beaten them at Lord’s should have been an occasion for ecstasy among England supporters following the Old Trafford Test. It was a time for bunting in the streets, BBQs on the lawn and dancing in defiance of the squally Manchester showers that long before the end had drained the tension from a prolonged third day.But as Alastair Cook chose not to enforce the follow-on, England’s utterly dominant position was strengthened to a background of muttering and grumbling that their appetite for a quick kill had not been satisfied. If there was any risk at all in making Pakistan bat again, many could not see it.Few Test captains put the opposition in again these days without misgivings, but having dismissed Pakistan in 63.4 overs, Cook’s reluctance was highly debatable even allowing for modern trends and the non-stop schedules that make captains reluctant to ask their bowlers to go the extra mile. Understandable, perhaps in the case of Ben Stokes, who had just returned from a knee operation. Others can be tasked with debating the pros and cons more deeply.England advanced that lead to 498 in 21 overs for the loss of Alex Hales, one player who might have benefited from Cook’s decision as he addresses a tendency to plant his front foot before the ball is released but who fell to Mohammad Amir for 24, an inside edge this time and a frustrated walk off without waiting for the umpire’s decision. Just as disturbingly, Hales has adopted a pencil moustache which gives him the look of a shifty character in a Miss Marple murder mystery. As for England’s malfunctioning middle order, James Vince and Gary Ballance, neither will get the chance to play a meaningful innings. In fact, with England already in an impregnable position according to Test-match statistics, they might not get to the crease at all.Whatever the considerations, Pakistan’s captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, would nevertheless have allowed himself a moment of satisfaction at the decision. At lunch, with Pakistan having subsided from four down overnight to be 119 for 8, the potential for a three-day defeat felt real, but that calamity was averted, first by a half-century of baleful countenance and stubborn stroke by Misbah, and then by another display of stubbornness by his England opposite number.Misbah added 60 in 15 overs with Wahab Riaz for the ninth wicket to hold up England after lunch before a top-edged sweep against Moeen was held by Cook at short fine leg. Wahab continued to eye Moeen’s spin, slog-sweeping him for six and then reverse-sweeping him just short of the ropes, before Moeen had him caught at deep midwicket by Hales. Moeen was challenged to prove himself in this Test, but as luck would have it he has so far batted nine balls for 2 not out and bowled 7.4 overs. At least he can claim he has done nothing wrong.Pakistan’s first innings went from bad to worse as they lost four wickets in the morning session. All four England quicks took a wicket in a session that was interrupted for an hour by rain.Their starting position was a dispiriting one: four wickets already lost for 57, still 532 runs in arrears. On a cloudier day, there was bounce and zip in the pitch and Pakistan proved unequal to the task.It took six balls for England to sense that it might be an excellent bowling morning, Shan Masood edging James Anderson on the bounce to Vince at third slip. Masood managed a more controlled boundary off Anderson, clipping off his pads, but a jab at a rising delivery later in the over gave Joe Root an inviting catch at second slip.Misbah, as one would expect from the old fox, met everything thrown at him with phlegm. He could not disguise his surprise when a back-of-a-length delivery from Broad exploded from the pitch, flew over his horizontal bat, and landed directly in the hands of Cook at first slip. More discomfiture followed from a well-directed bouncer from Chris Woakes in the last over of the morning, which flicked his glove as he jerked his head away in self-preservation and he lost a piece from his helmet in the process. He just got on with it, giving the impression that he had seen it all before. The rain break interrupted England’s progress, but when they resumed at 12.30pm it was not long before Asad Shafiq fell to a slower offcutter by Stuart Broad, a front-foot drive flying to Hales at backward point. The most idiosyncratic innings, though, was played by Sarfraz Ahmed, whose slash at two of his first three balls, from Broad, indicated his state of mind. His counterattack lasted 18 balls, 26 riskily assembled, before he edged Stokes to second slip. All it required was for Woakes to take a wicket for England’s pace bowlers to complete the set. It duly arrived with Root’s third slip catch of the morning – and fourth of the innings – enabling England to go to lunch a ball early.Woakes had his fourth wicket of the innings, a self-effacing allrounder making a name for himself. Not that he will make much of it: he seems the sort who signs leaving cards in tiny handwriting where he will not get in the way of others. But he has had a fine Test and his haul was a rewarding moment on a day that deteriorated with the weather.

Liverpool Eyeing Exciting Konate Alternative

Liverpool have since recovered from their prolonged malaise earlier in the campaign and have now given themselves an unexpected shot at Champions League football, albeit they may have to rely on other results elsewhere.

Nevertheless, injury problems have dashed their chances of making progress as 2022/23 has rolled on, with central defensive options being squeezed to the limit this term.

Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate have all spent time on the sidelines in what has proved to be a rollercoaster year for the red half of Merseyside, signifying that positional reinforcements may be needed in the forthcoming transfer window to combat these issues moving forward.

One man that has been linked with a summer move to Anfield and could help to bolster squad depth is Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, as reported by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, who said: "Understand Newcastle, Manchester Utd and Liverpool scouts were in attendance at Nice-Rennes game to monitor Jean Clair Todibo. French centre back could get top club move in the summer — with price tag understood to be around €45m (£39m)."

Why is Jean-Clair Todibo so highly rated?

Speaking to Football FanCast in a recent interview, journalist Dean Jones has explained why Liverpool may elect to move for Todibo this summer, saying: "It's increasing level of competition as well, isn't it? It's not saying that you don't rate the guys you've already got in your squad, but it's important that no one in that backline ever feels too safe because that has also been one of their problems this season, is that due to injuries as much as anything else, they've not had big competition for places that the back next season, they have to be able to deal better with emergency situations and I think that that's probably why they're scouting the area."

In total, the Frenchman has made 44 appearances for Nice this season, as per Transfermarkt, and has a contract at the Allianz Riviera until the summer of 2027.

WhoScored notes that the 23-year-old is a great commander of the back line despite still being yet to come into the prime of his career, as Todibo has averaged 3.3 clearances and 2.2 tackles per match in Ligue 1 this campaign.

FBRef also indicate that the Cayenne-born defender is also a competent figure in possession. Todibo fares well in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions regarding progressive passing, as he ranks in the top 15% for this metric over the last 365 days, having made 4.63 per 90 minutes for Nice.

As per Tribuna, German football legend Lothar Matthaus labelled Todibo as 'the best centre-back I've seen in a long time' back in 2020, which is some statement to make from someone who has seen and done it all in the elite game.

Who could Jean-Clair Todibo replace or compete with at Liverpool?

The defender has received massive praise from German legend Lothar Matthaus, who stated: "Todibo is the best centre back I’ve seen in a long time.”

Immediately, Konate, Gomez and Matip come to mind, seeing as they have all had their struggles with injuries and form this season.

Football Insider report that Liverpool would be willing to listen to offers for Matip this summer, with a fee of £10-15 million being targeted by Anfield chiefs as they seek to be fairly compensated for his services.

Gomez may also be moved over to right-back on a more frequent basis next term to allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to function in advanced areas more regularly, something he has partaken in recently to great effect in a free midfield role in possession.

That leaves Konate, who lags slightly behind Todibo in both clearance and tackle completion, making three clearances and 2.1 successful challenges per Premier League match in 2022/23, as per WhoScored.

Jean-Clair Todibo for Nice

The pair are both talented defensive options of similar age and similar calibre, all told. However, it does seem about time that Jurgen Klopp phases some younger blood into a backline comprised mainly of experience.

Todibo could help to push Konate and vice versa for their place in the side at Liverpool that would likely be as partner to Van Dijk at the heart of the defence. Liverpool haven't had suitable cover over the last few years and now could be the chance to rectify that.

Zimbabwe's batsmen must get out of comfort zones – Klusener

Coaxing Zimbabwe’s batsmen out of their comfort zones is foremost in the mind of their batting coach Lance Klusener as he looks to prepare them for their two-Test series against New Zealand

Zimbabwe managed to score more than 150 only once in the ODIs against India in June•Associated Press

Coaxing Zimbabwe’s batsmen out of their comfort zones is foremost in the mind of their batting coach Lance Klusener as he looks to prepare them for their two-Test series against New Zealand. Klusener is currently back home in South Africa but will join up with the Zimbabwean squad later this month and hopes to see the senior members of the line-up step up.”It’s about whether they really want to challenge themselves and get better or if they are happy to just bumble along; it’s about coming out of comfort zones,” Klusener told ESPNcricinfo. “They can achieve better if they put themselves out there more. Obviously the more you put yourself out, the more risk there is, so there is also that balance [is needed] but I think they are getting there.”The reluctance to bat aggressively is something former Zimbabwe coach Alan Butcher alluded to in his book in which he recalled an incident with a senior Zimbabwean batsman who described his role as being to “make sure I don’t lose my wicket” rather than to score runs. More recently, the effects of that conservatism have begun to bleed into performance. In last month’s limited-overs series against India, Zimbabwe were bowled out for totals under 200 in all three ODIs and only scored more than 150 once. Vusi Sibanda was the only Zimbabwean batsman to score a half-century in the ODIs. They punched a little harder in the first T20, where they notched up 170 for 6 thanks largely to Elton Chigumbura’s 26-ball 54, but their other scores of 99 for 9 and 135 for 6 could not sustain that momentum.Still, Klusener was heartened to see the improvement as the series progressed. “It was good to see them take the last T20 close,” Klusener said, referring to a three-run defeat which cost Zimbabwe the series. “The one thing with Zimbabwe is that you can always expect a fight. They now that if they fight and they lose, that’s okay.”At the same time he is concerned about a lack of depth that sees the same names crop up as the country’s main performers. “They have a small pool of players and so they have to make the best of what they’ve got. It’s one of their challenges and they want to try and fix it, but whether they can do that from the top down is another story.”One of the ways of grooming more players for higher honours are tours like the ongoing one between South Africa A and Zimbabwe A, in which some of Zimbabwe’s fringe players have an opportunity to prove themselves. Opening batsman Brain Chari made full use of his and scored 98 in his first outing in the series. It’s players that like who Klusener is hoping to work with and teach the no-fear mentality.Klusener has someone to help him in that approach: Makhaya Ntini. Although Ntini has not been confirmed as permanent coach after he was promoted to the interim role for the India series, it is expected Ntini will continue to be in charge for the New Zealand series. Ntini remained in Zimbabwe after the India series and has been working with the players throughout.Klusener believes Ntini is making a difference and it won’t take long for it to show. “Makhaya is energetic and passionate and adds value. He has been very good for Zimbabwe. He trains with the guys. He gets to know them. He doesn’t lack for ideas and between us – we are a team – we have a lot of ideas. It’s just about getting the guys to buy into the ideas we have.”Klusener will be back in Zimbabwe to resume that process towards the ends of July. He will work with the team during the two Tests before heading to the Tamil Nadu Premier League in India, where he is coaching the Lyca Kovai Kings. He expects to be back in Zimbabwe when they play again towards the end of 2016.

Liverpool: Incredible Star Could Replace Thiago At Anfield

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves this summer and the Portuguese maestro could be the ideal heir to Thiago at Anfield.

Could Liverpool sign Neves?

According to Football Insider, the Reds have a concrete interest in signing the 26-year-old, who could be on his way out of Molineux this summer after expressing a desire to play in the Champions League.

Although Jurgen Klopp's side won't be able to offer that next season, they have been a consistent force in Europe's top competition in recent years, winning it against Spurs in 2019 before falling short in the final against Real Madrid in 2022.

Barcelona are touted as the current front runners for Neves but want a player-exchange deal, while the Old Gold are holding out for a cash-only sale, with previous reports suggesting that £45m could be enough to prise him away from Molineux.

Klopp is clearly desperate for midfield additions at Liverpool, especially with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all departing the club on a free transfer this summer.

However, Neves could potentially arrive as a replacement for Spanish magician Thiago, after his injury problems meant that he would make just 18 appearances in the top flight this season, while he also turned 32 next month, so he cannot be considered a long-term option at Anfield.

Would Neves be a good Thiago heir?

Neves has made a name for himself in both the Championship and Premier League with Wolves having joined the Midlands club in 2017, going on to make 252 appearances, contributing 30 goals and 13 assists in that time.

The Portugal international excels at sitting deep and dictating the play in a similar vein to Thiago, with WhoScored suggesting that his biggest strengths are his passing, long shots, concentration and ball interception skills.

No player in Liverpool's squad has made more long passes per game (5.2) than the former Bayern Munich man but Neves averages a whopping 6.2 per game which suggests that he could easily set the tempo in Liverpool's midfield next season.

Despite Wolves' struggles in the league this campaign which saw them bottom at Christmas before distancing themselves from the relegation battle, Neves has enjoyed a fine campaign, contributing six goals and one assist in 34 Premier League appearances with a strong 6.99 average rating from WhoScored.

Teammate Hugo Bueno was full of praise for his "incredible" captain earlier in the campaign and it would certainly be a big loss for Wolves to lose such an influential player, but their loss could be Liverpool's gain this summer.

Neves' experience, age and passing ability mark him out as the ideal man to take over from Thiago at Anfield in the long term, and Klopp should definitely be looking to bring him in.

Gap between Test and domestic quality causing inconsistency – Simmons

Phil Simmons, the West Indies head coach, has expressed concern over the up-and-down nature of the team’s performances over the course of the Test series against India

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Port of Spain 22-Aug-20162:09

‘The series should have been 1-0’ – Simmons

Phil Simmons, the West Indies head coach, has expressed concern over the “up-and-down” nature of the team’s performances over the course of the Test series against India, and believes the inconsistency may have something to do with the quality gap between Test cricket and the region’s domestic cricket.”I think the series was a little bit too up-and-down,” Simmons said. “We played well across maybe two hours, three hours sometimes, and the next two hours we would be down. And I think that was, for me, the major disappointment. We’ve shown that we can do things but not consistently enough. We batted well in Jamaica, but we went and did the same things we did in the first Test [again] in the third Test. It’s disappointing that we weren’t consistent enough.”Simmons said some of the West Indies batsmen might need to tighten up their techniques to be more consistent at Test level, but said the process should be happening in domestic cricket.”I think in some cases you have to adjust techniques, which is a sad thing because it’s something that we should be doing at a level below,” Simmons said. “I think the same thing with mentality because when we come up here it’s a lot harder to get runs and get wickets. I think at our domestic level it’s a lot easier, that patience and that time at the crease and things, if we bat two sessions in a domestic game a lot of the guys playing here would have a hundred or more. But if you bat two sessions here, it might be 60 or 70, so the patience at the domestic level is not tested as much as up here.”Calling for a unified approach to lifting the standard of cricket, Simmons wanted the coaching staff of the Test team to meet the coaches of the domestic teams regularly.”There’s a lot of things that I have asked for, and it’s not coming to fruition,” he said. “I’ve asked for coaches to meet twice, maybe three times a year, and discuss cricket and so on. We need to make sure that whatever we’re doing upstairs is going down to everybody.”You and me might be two coaches and might coach differently but the same objective we have to have. If we don’t have the same objective, then we spin it up in muddles. I think that’s lacking. It’s quite a few things to be fixed, but at the end of the day the quality of cricket that is downstairs is not good enough for the maturity of the players to be quicker.”Other measures, he said, would include improving the facilities all around the region.”Things like our pitches and our practice facilities need to be better, a lot better, in order to produce players, not just fast bowlers as we’re lacking now, but batsmen, because the better the pitches the better batsmen show themselves. Little things like that we need to put in place. The gap between [Test cricket] and our cricket needs to be filled, whether it can be done with an academy, which we don’t have right now, A-team cricket, which we have one [series] a year, we should have two to three a year. Something has to be done to fill that gap, you know? We’re missing a few things.”Only 22 overs of play were possible over the five days of the fourth Test at Queen’s Park Oval, and there was no play on the last four days despite the ground receiving plenty of sunshine in that time. Simmons said he could not put his finger on why the outfield failed to dry sufficiently to allow play.”Extremely surprised, because, as far as I know, in my years here, this has never been a ground like that,” he said. “I don’t know what is the position is over on the other side [the ground officials], but it was really bad and after two days of sun, and when I saw it yesterday morning, I couldn’t believe how bad it was. I don’t know what the position is there and what caused that, but I’m surprised and I never expected that here.”West Indies’ next Test assignment is a tour of the UAE to play Pakistan, who were recently crowned the No. 1 Test team in the world. Simmons said it was important for the Test players to get some rest after the series against India, but hoped they would have adequate preparation ahead of the Tests in the UAE.”I don’t know about [whether we need an] extended camp because you just played four Test matches, well three-and-a-quarter Test matches, back-to-back, and we underestimate the power of rest after Test matches, but we also have two T20s [against India in Florida]. We also have a one-day squad and T20 squad for the first part of the Pakistan series.”So from the point of view of being together, we’re trying to get the Test team to the UAE early enough, so that we can have enough practice time before the first two-day game. And this is something that I keep trying to get when we go on tour because I think it’s harder on tour. If we get two, sometimes three practice games before the first Test match, then that would be ideal.”Some places we can’t get it, but we have to keep trying to get that because we see that we improve [with warm-up games]. On the other side, it’s a case of us trying not to slack off now as players and coaches, and make sure that players continue to do what we’ve been doing over the last two weeks, with their technique and temperament and everything like that.”One positive for West Indies from the Tests against India was the promise shown by some of the younger batsmen, notably Roston Chase and Shane Dowrich. When asked where that left the Test career of Marlon Samuels, who has averaged 25.80 since the start of 2013, Simmons hoped the performances of the younger players would push established players to perform.”[Samuels’] Test career still stands there,” Simmons said. “[Younger players] are pushing him which is nice because when you have people pushing you from outside, you either get pushed out or you lift your game. So, I think it’s a case where you have youngsters pushing him now, and that’s good for the team.”Same thing with Shannon [Gabriel] and a few young fast bowlers coming out, Jason [Holder], everybody. You need that second team that’s up to the standard to push people so that they continue to produce. The great West Indies team had that, the great Australia team had that, so that’s what we need here.”Darren Bravo, West Indies’ best batsman, had a poor series, with only one half-century in seven innings, and ended the series with his Test average dipping below 40. Simmons backed Bravo to come out of his lean patch, and said his career record reflected the state of the team when he came into it, without too many world-class seniors to share their experience with him.”We talk about Darren Bravo, and we talk about him a lot because we see his potential and where he’s supposed to be right now. But you look back at things and you look at all the people around his age and what they’ve come through, the help that they’ve had in the team when they came in…”We talk about Virat [Kohli]. When Virat came in, look at the players around him. That’s where you get that little bit of experience, little bit of help from. Bravo’s had to turn up and be the senior player and I think sometimes that affects people. But no doubt about it, he’s working extremely hard on trying to get his game together and trying to score runs, just as he did when he came into the team.”

£40k-p/w Liverpool Man Drops Big Exit Hint On Instagram

Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho has suggested he could leave "soon" in a social media post amid some recent exit rumours.

What did Fabio Carvalho say on Instagram?

It's not been a great season for the Reds with key player Mohamed Salah admitting he was "totally devastated" to not finish inside the top four.

One of the most disappointed players in the squad, however, will likely be Carvalho who has struggled for regular game time in his debut season.

Indeed, after arriving from Fulham, the 20-year-old has seen just 340 minutes of action in the Premier League in total with only a handful of appearances in the cup competitions too.

With that being the case, he has recently been linked with a move away from Anfield with manager Jurgen Klopp even admitting as much.

The German recently told the press: “There’s a possibility that he will go on loan, we’ll see.

“This was not Fabio’s best year in his career but it might have been his most important. No player has impressed me more than Fabio. It is true. This very talented boy came here with big dreams and big expectations. It was okay in the beginning but didn’t work out (later in the season). His work ethic will give him a fantastic career."

Well, it seems Carvalho is set on a move as well as he dropped a big hint in the comments section of his recent Instagram post.

Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga commented: "New home…"

To which, Carvalho simply replied: "Soon."

What's the latest Carvalho transfer news?

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have already fielded an offer from an unnamed club from abroad – though understood not to be his native Portugal – have seen an offer knocked back.

On top of that, there has also been interest from some Premier League clubs in taking him on a temporary basis next term.

Importantly, it seems the club have no interest in selling the £40k-p/w attacking midfielder – which is no great surprise after the praise given by Klopp.

Indeed, as well as though quotes mentioned earlier, the German coach also added: “He trained and got nothing (in terms of team selection). His reactions in a row, I never saw before.”

All in all, though, it looks as though Carvalho will be leaving on loan to a new club very soon where he will no doubt hope to get much more game time next season.

Miguel Cummins, the West Indies fast bowler, has signed as Worcestershire’s overseas player for the final three rounds of the Championship. Cummins, who made his Test debut against India last month, replaces South Africa’s Kyle Abbott as Worcestershire aim to maintain their pursuit of the one promotion spot available in Division Two this season.Abbott was called up for South Africa’s Test series with New Zealand and, after two defeats in their last three matches followed by conceding 551 against Northamptonshire, Worcestershire have decided to strengthen their attack by bringing in Cummins. With one day of their ongoing match at New Road to go, Worcestershire sit fourth in the Division Two table, 56 points behind leaders Essex after they secured a three-day win against Leicestershire.Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket, said: “We have signed Miguel for the last three games of the season. I am delighted not only to be getting someone who has been playing recently but also someone who has recently been playing international cricket and that says a lot for his quality.”He played in the West Indies-India series and was successful in the penultimate Test of that series. He is a young guy with no experience of county cricket or English conditions but he is hungry to do well, try and impress and make an impact and he has got this opportunity in the last three games and we are looking forward to having him on board.”He is a little bit quicker than any of our bowlers, with a bit of bounce, and he is well thought of by Ottis Gibson. I spoke to him and he gave a very good recommendation for him and when you look to give someone an opportunity, you want someone with a point to prove.”There is a lot of unavailability [of overseas players] towards the end of the season and we are very lucky to get Miguel.”Cummins, who took 6 for 48 in the St Lucia Test against India, has a career record of 125 first-class wickets at 22.44. He was the most successful pace bowler in this year’s WICB Professional Cricket League, with 33 at 20.69. He is expected to arrive at the club on Monday and be available to play Essex at Chelmsford, starting on Wednesday, followed by games against Sussex and Derbyshire.”I am relishing the chance to play county cricket for the first time,” Cummins said. “I am always keen to learn and broaden my cricketing knowledge and experiences and this is an ideal opportunity for me. Several West Indian players have played for the county and I hope I can make a significant impact and help the club towards its goal of trying to achieve promotion.”
