Everton: Dyche could unearth "breakout" 21 y/o Stones heir

Everton’s summer finally starts to be shaping up after months of worry from the fanbase, however it is actually one player already in Sean Dyche’s camp that could prove to have the biggest effect on the squad next season.

How good is Jarrad Branthwaite?

Having joined from Carlisle in 2020, Jarrad Branthwaite quickly became well-known around the club as a pacey centre-back with a towering frame. He had all the physical qualities to thrive in the Premier League but remained raw. His sending-off against Brentford in 2022 emphasised that.

So, when a one-year loan to PSV Eindhoven was announced, it made perfect sense. The 21-year-old would enjoy a season in a highly technical league, and return ready to star.

That gamble seems to have now paid off.

A 6.97 average rating in the Eredivisie emphasises this, which is a figure buoyed by his 87% pass accuracy, 1.4 interceptions and 3.4 clearances per game, via Sofascore. The latter figure would have made him the fifth-best in that category when he compared against the Toffees’ squad from last term.

sean-dyche

Journalist Paul Brown clearly took note of this rise to prominence in the Netherlands, and would tell Football FanCast exactly what fans have to look forward to come August: “Branthwaite is probably the closest they’ve got to someone who’s looking at a potential breakout year.

“It looks like he’s going to be in pretty solid form and [in the] centre-back rotation. We all saw last season that it only takes a couple of injuries for that position to need to be rotated quite a lot.”

How much did John Stones leave Everton for?

Given he was signed from the lower leagues of English football, rising up to within Everton’s first team, it is hard not to draw comparisons with the prior success earned with John Stones.

He too moved to Goodison Park from Barnsley and would go on to feature 95 times for the club before joining Manchester City in a £47.5m move.

Despite also being initially raw and prone to mistakes, the foundations were there for a truly great defender to be unearthed with the right teaching. Fortunately, that transfer saw him join up with Pep Guardiola, who has since forged him into one of the best in his position, even revolutionising the inverted full-back role.

john-stones

As such, when compared against other centre-backs across Europe, the 29-year-old ranks in the top 4% for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes per 90 and the top 8% for progressive carries per 90, via FBref.

He has grown from a similar level to Branthwaite’s current position into the monster he is today, with his Spanish manager praising his development and adaptability: “He has this amazing quality to understand the game, to be calm, to read the next pass.

“He is more mature but he’s still young and it depends on him if he wants to become better. Hopefully he still has the desire to improve because there are many things to improve with and without the ball."

Under Dyche, who knows a thing or two about moulding a solid defence, this young colossus could now emulate that success, growing into a perfect partner for James Tarkowski with the perfect blend of physicality and technical excellence.

Last campaign afforded him the time to grow, and now is the time for him to take his chance with both hands and become the club’s next Stones with the “breakout year” that Brown envisions.

'Don't need to prove anyone wrong' – de Villiers

AB de Villiers hopes to use the three T20s against England to thoroughly banish memories of the Champions Trophy exit and the resultant analysis of his leadership and lack of runs

AB de Villiers hopes to use the three T20s against England to thoroughly banish memories of the Champions Trophy exit and the resultant analysis of his leadership and lack of runs. De Villiers will captain a fairly inexperienced squad, which includes nine players from the failed Champions Trophy campaign but is without several seniors who are being rested before the Test, and he hopes they can use the matches to find a rhythm South Africa have lacked on this tour.”It was a tough few days after the Champions Trophy, to go through that phase of reflecting and to hear some of the criticism. It’s never easy but I have always been the kind of guy to see the positive in that and see opportunity to improve. These three matches give me that opportunity as a player and as a captain for the team,” de Villiers said. “I don’t feel like I need to prove anyone wrong or prove something to someone. I just want to go play. I feel like a youngster starting my career again. I am really full of energy and love playing. I just want to score some runs again and captain the team to a few good wins.”With a total of 20 runs from his three innings in the Champions Trophy, on the back of a quiet IPL, it’s fair to say de Villiers had a lean run but he insisted he is in good touch and simply a victim of poor luck. “I feel like I am playing very well. I had a couple of bad dismissals in those two games. The first game I tried to take it on a bit. The second game I don’t know how the ball went up in the air like that. The third game I felt like I was going to get 200 off 5 balls so I got run out. There’s nothing wrong with my form. The results are not showing.”Neither are they showing for South Africa. They arrived in England on a high following a successful 2016-17 season, in which they won eight trophies including three fifty-over series and sat at No.1 on the ODI rankings but are empty-handed. They lost their three-match ODI series to England and crashed out of the Champions Trophy in the first round, adding to a trove of major tournament misery. This time, de Villiers is taking a different approach to his reaction. Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, he is determined to get over it as quickly as possible.”I am past that stage of really harping on it for a very long time. The difficult part is the criticism all around, just hearing the negative stuff all the time but I am past nagging about losing games of cricket because that happens. It’s happened quite a few times,” de Villiers said. “I am not going to look into that too much. I am ready to move on. I know I am still a good player, I know the team can still achieve amazing things and it’s important for me not to think about what happened in the past. I am not going to spend too much energy thinking about the last 10 or 12 tournaments I have played in.”But he is still devoting time to thinking about the one tournament he does want to play in: the 2019 World Cup. In an effort to remain fit and focused, de Villiers has opted out of Test cricket for the rest of the year – and he has hinted it may be longer than that – which has earned the ire of some former players. Both Ashwell Prince and Herschelle Gibbs commented that players should not be allowed to dictate their availability to the national board but de Villiers claims that is not what he is doing.”It’s never been about managing my workload. It’s more about prioritising certain things that I still want to achieve. I’ve never been picking and choosing my games,” he said. “It’s making sure I am in the best form for that 2019 World Cup. That’s the goal. I have to regroup with CSA when I get back home. The new season will be starting and I have to see how I fit in and move forward from there.”De Villiers will be part of the new Global T20 League, as the marquee player for the Pretoria franchise. The competition will run across November and December, preceding a yet-to-be-confirmed series against India that will feature four Tests. It was initially de Villiers’ aim to play in those Tests but it remains to be seen if he does, especially as his own recent statements are more aligned with shorter formats, 50-over particularly.Despite South Africa’s premature end to the Champions Trophy, with the World Cup to be played in the same place, de Villiers believes they were taught lessons they could help them in future. “We learnt a lot of things. Pakistan surprised all of us. The way they controlled the middle overs, especially with the ball in hand. From the mental point of view, it shows that any team can come out on top on the day,” he said. “We made a few notes – mental notes which we will use coming back in 2019. I hope I will be part of that. That’s the plan.”

Leicester City: Wolves lose out on transfer as Maresca proceeds

Leicester City have decided to 'proceed' with a deal to bring ex-Aston Villa star Arjan Raikhy to the King Power Stadium on a free transfer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Who is Arjan Raikhy?

Raikhy is a 20-year-old midfielder who was most recently on the books of Aston Villa, earning £2,500 per week, before being released at the end of last campaign, as per Sky Sports.

Following some time as a free agent, the same outlet has revealed that Leicester City are 'poised to announce' the signing of Raikhy, which will see him initially link up with the Foxes' Under-21 side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Salford City, Doncaster Rovers, Morecambe and Barrow had all expressed interest in offering Raikhy a new challenge ahead of 2023/24; however, it now looks like he will head to the East Midlands to work under the stewardship of Enzo Maresca, as per The Daily Mail.

Last term, Raikhy formed part of Aston Villa's development squad and featured 24 times in all competitions for the Young Villans, notching three goals and two assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Born in Wolverhampton, Raikhy has also spent time out on loan at Stockport County and Grimsby Town in the 2021/22 campaign learning his trade.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs has indicated that Leicester City will look to seal a deal for Raikhy and also detailed that he had been on trial with the club earlier in the window.

Jacobs told FFC: "I would also keep an eye on Arjan Raikhy as well. Who, of course, used to play for Aston Villa and was released by them at the end of the season. He did actually have a trial at Leicester Under-21's in the earlier part of the summer and was attracting some interest from Wolves as well. It looks like Leicester have chosen to proceed on this front."

What other events could occur at Leicester City this window?

Leicester City boss Maresca has already got to work on adding quality reinforcements to his squad this window and has confirmed the signings of Harry Winks, Conor Coady, Mads Hermansen and Callum Doyle, as per Transfermarkt.

According to Turkish publication Noussour, the Foxes, alongside Premier League newcomers Luton Town, are in the running to sign Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri, who could arrive at the King Power on a loan basis.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has detailed that Leicester City are also close to signing Montpellier forward Stephy Mavididi, stating on Twitter X: "Stephy Mavididi to Leicester, confirmed as revealed in June and here we go. Deal in place. Agreement on €7.5m plus sell-on clause, player already in England in order to undergo medical tests and sign long term deal."

Swansea City striker Joel Piroe is another striker that could be set for a move to Leicester City, who face a battle with Southampton and Leeds United to acquire the Dutchman, according to Football Insider.

The Foxes are believed to be 'keeping tabs' on the forward due to uncertainty over the futures of Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho, who are on the radar of several Premier League sides.

Helm takes the helm to steer Middlesex to thrilling victory

Middlesex 147 (Eskinazi 57, Stirling 40) beat Sussex 145 (Nash 69) by two runsTom Helm produced a brilliant final over as Middlesex beat Sussex Sharks by two runs to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the NatWest T20 Blast for the second successive year.Sussex were firm favourites to win their third game in a row when they needed 24 off four overs chasing a target of 148. Even when they lost in-form opener Chris Nash for 69 they were still in control with five needed off the final over.Seamer Helm, though, kept his nerve. Jofra Archer played and missed at his first two balls before he skied the third to backward point where Steven Finn took the catch.David Wiese missed the fourth delivery, took two off the fifth but failed to make contact with the final ball to leave Middlesex celebrating an unlikely triumph.Nash made 69 from 52 balls, his third successive half-century in the competition, with nine boundaries and had he been there at the finish Sussex would surely have won, but legspinner Nathan Sowter trapped him lbw in the 18th over before Helm took centre stage. There was assistance for the bowlers throughout on a slow pitch. Steven Finn dismissed Sussex’s two danger men Luke Wright (6) and Ross Taylor (3) cheaply, but Nash seemed to have swung momentum back his side’s way when he struck three boundaries off Finn’s final over.Middlesex, though, kept chipping away while only Stiaan van Zyl (34) offered Nash the support he needed. Earlier, Middlesex had been indebted to a maiden T20 half-century from Steve Eskinazi in only his third game in the format as they finished on 147 for 6 after being put in.He came in during the fifth over after Chris Jordan had ended an opening stand of 30 between Paul Stirling and John Simpson when Simpson (9) drove a slower ball to mid-off.Middlesex looked on course for a more competitive score when Eskinazi and Stirling were adding 40 from 29 balls for the second wicket. Stirling, returning to the side after injury, struck four boundaries and pulled George Garton over mid-wicket for six and was well set on 40 when he failed to clear long on attempting to drive left-arm spinner Danny Briggs over the top.Briggs took another important wicket in the 12th over when he had England one-day captain Eoin Morgan (10) held by Wiese, who ran in from the mid-wicket boundary to take a superbly-judged diving catch. The South African only just avoided a head-on collision with Nash, who had to go off for treatment to a cut knee suffered as he took evasive action.Eskinazi finished with 57 from 44 balls with five fours but Middlesex contained by some accurate Sussex bowling on a slow pitch which offered some seam movement.Sussex are only a point off the top four but need to beat Gloucestershire on Friday to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.

Pressure on England to do the running

The hosts have the weight of expectation on them, but also a batting line-up that has been in sensational form

Can South Africa’s attack lead the underdogs to the final?

Big pictureFour years ago, the possibility of England playing South Africa in a semi-final would’ve been scoffed at. But South Africa are here, and that is thanks to their consistent bowling performances and the format itself – seven straight games for each team to leave an imprint.Dane van Niekerk and her team-mates have played a brand of cricket that has been reminiscent of West Indies in 2013, injecting fresh flavour into the tournament, celebrating every win with gusto. South Africa took the qualifier route to get here and the benefit of having a settled team – they’ve been playing together since February – has been apparent. By the time they landed in England, every player knew exactly what was expected of her.England, meanwhile, are in a cocoon outside of training sessions and media commitments. They have even made efforts to log off social media distractions. Heather Knight and her team have the weight of expectation on them, because they are favourites, a well-earned tag after their six clinical and successive victories since losing the opening game to India. The batsmen have been especially dominant. Concerns over Sarah Taylor’s form, after she took much of 2016 out to deal with anxiety issues, were emphatically brushed aside when these two teams had met in the group stages. The England wicketkeeper struck a regal 147 off 104 balls with no less than 24 fours. Natalie Sciver, amid scoring tons of runs, has also introduced the ‘Natmeg’ – a flick between the legs to yorker-length deliveries. And opener Tammy Beaumont is the tournament’s leading run-getter with 372 of them. But if there’s one attack that’s capable of stopping England’s juggernaut, it’s South Africa’s. In Marizanne Kapp and van Niekerk, they have two bowlers who have combined to take 27 wickets, much more than the cream of England’s attack. On form, this is, therefore, a clash of equals, although the pressure of being hosts could weigh on England’s mind.Form guideEngland WWWWW (completed matches, most recent first)
South AfricaLWWLWIn the spotlightAt her menacing best, Anya Shrubsole can be a threat on any surface. In this tournament, however, wickets have been a struggle for England’s vice-captain. Five in seven games is a reflection of how batsmen have taken note of her threat and negated it by looking to play her out. She will, however, have fond memories of the last semi-final against South Africa, at the World T20 in 2014, when she took 2 for 12 in an incisive opening burst to seal the game. Her contributions haven’t attracted the same attention, but it’s a direct acknowledgement of how tidy Trisha Chetty has been behind the stumps. Against Sri Lanka last week, she rose to the top of the list for most dismissals (134) by a wicketkeeper in Women’s ODIs. With 97 ODIs under her belt, she’d want to get as close to that milestone of 100 right here at the Women’s World Cup.Team newsLauren Winfield’s form at the top is a concern, but, barring injuries, England are unlikely to make too many changes for a knockout game. England: (possible) 1 Lauren Winfield, 2 Tammy Beaumont, 3 Sarah Taylor (wk), 4 Heather Knight (capt), 5 Natalie Sciver, 6 Fran Wilson, 7 Katherine Brunt, 8 Jenny Gunn, 9 Laura Marsh, 10 Anya Shrubsole, 11 Alex HartleySouth Africa are likely to bring back Chloe Tryon, a big-hitter who can also bowl seam up. Her services were missed in the loss to Australia. As such medium-pacer Masabata Klaas could find herself out. South Africa: (possible) 1 Laura Wolvaardt, 2 Lizelle Lee, 3 Trisha Chetty (wk), 4 Mignon du Preez, 5 Marizanne Kapp, 6 Sune Luus, 7 Dane van Niekerk (capt), 8 Chloe Tryon, 9 Shabnim Ismail, 10 Ayabonga Khaka, 11 Moseline DanielsPitch and conditionsThe league game between these two sides in Bristol produced 678 runs. This is a televised game, a semi-final at that, and the ICC, over the years, have focused on making such games more marketable. So expect a good bating surface.Stats and trivia Four England players have scored 250 runs or more in this tournament. It is the most among all teams – Beaumont (372), Heather Knight (333), Sciver (315), Taylor (297). South Africa’s only semi-final appearance came 17 years ago. They lost to Australia by nine wickets then England have won 26 out of the 34 meetings between the two sides.Quotes”I came into the World Cup thinking I had the best opening attack in the world, at the moment I am starting to believe I have the best bowling attack.”
“We prepared a little bit differently, there was a different vibe around the group. A few people did things they wouldn’t usually do on cricket, field, but that’s international cricket. And I think we have learnt a lot from that. We’ve done a lot of work on how we deal with that pressure, we’ve made it normal to feel pressure. And that kind of open honesty helps ”

Liverpool Could Repeat Gini Deal With £20m Move For "Tackling Machine"

Liverpool have been addressing the biggest issue that destroyed their hopes of a successful season last year: the midfield.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has already signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m and Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig for £60m, with Southampton's Romeo Lavia subject to two bids from the Anfield side as they look to further improve the centre.

With Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both headed for Saudi Arabia, Klopp might be inclined to secure another signing to ensure his side does not get exposed, and given the recent update regarding Leeds United's Tyler Adams, Liverpool might look into the possibility of a deal.

Is Tyler Adams joining Liverpool?

Last month, TEAMtalk reported that Liverpool were interested in signing Adams following the Whites' relegation from the Premier League, but the £40m demands were seemingly a deterrent and the Anfield side pushed no further.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

But now, a fresh update could prompt Klopp to return for the USMNT international, with The Athletic, ever-reliable, revealing that the 24-year-old actually has a £20m release clause in his contract.

How good is Tyler Adams?

Since arriving at Elland Road for around £20m one year ago to replace Manchester City-bound Kalvin Phillips, Adams managed to impress despite the disarray Leeds found themselves in.

As per Sofascore, the defensive midfielder scored an average rating of 6.98 – as per Sofascore – in the Premier League across his 24 outings, which was bettered only by youngster Darko Gyabi, who started just twice.

Adams completed 82% of his passes throughout the campaign and averaged a key pass every match from his role deep in the Whites' midfield, notably dazzling with his defensive output, where he averaged 3.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, also succeeding with 55% of his ground duels.

Compare this to the languid output of Fabinho, who only won 48% of his ground duels, averaged 1.8 tackles and one interception per game, and it's clear to see that Liverpool could utilise such a high-octane force.

tyler-adams-leeds-united

Adams' work rate and tenacity is best illustrated by FBref, displaying his ranking among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for tackles and the top 3% for interceptions per 90, leading Kevin Campbell to appropriately name him a "tackling machine".

The 24-year-old looks to have the making of a first-rate star, and the mere fact that he has suffered the ignominy of relegation should not dissuade Klopp from negotiating a deal; it hasn't before.

Indeed, Andrew Roberton, Xherdan Shaqiri and Gini Wijnaldum are all examples of Liverpool's recent success in swiping players from clubs to have faced the fall into the English second tier, with the latter perhaps the typifier of why it is an investment worth making.

Wijnaldum joined the Reds from Newcastle United for £25m as a 25-year-old in 2016, going on to make 237 appearances and winning a wealth of major honours, including the Premier League and Champions League, and was deemed "irreplaceable" by Richard Jolly for conducting his industrious work in the centre of Klopp's midfield.

Given that Adams boasts a similar tenacious approach and would arrive at Anfield roughly the same age as the Dutchman, it might be wise for Klopp to look to repeat the trick and provide his side with a steely new force to be reckoned with.
