Home-grown Worcestershire close to deserved reward

Worcestershire have given themselves an excellent chance of securing promotion after a third successive County Championship victory

George Dobell at New Road15-Sep-2017Worcestershire have given themselves an excellent chance of securing promotion after a third successive County Championship victory. It may have taken them longer than anticipated – entry to New Road was free on Friday with a possibility that matters could be settled within an hour, but play ultimately stretched until around 3.20pm – but the result takes Worcestershire top of the table with only a couple of weeks of the season remaining. The result from Cardiff means promotion is not assured as Northants have a game in hand. But the worst case scenario means Worcestershire will require a maximum of 11 points from their final match against Durham. As their captain, Joe Leach, put it: “It’s in our own hands.”With Northants needing to defeat Nottinghamshire next week to sustain their own promotion hopes, it is entirely possible Worcestershire’s promotion will be guaranteed before their next match begins. If so, it would be their fifth promotion in 11 years under director of cricket Steve Rhodes and the first time in the history of two divisions they will have found themselves in the division above Warwickshire. It is a scenario that seemed unlikely only a few weeks ago. After the fall-out of the Tom Kohler-Cadmore affair and a gruesome T20 campaign – no team won fewer or lost more games – it seemed their Championship form was falling away. They won just one (and lost three) out of six Championship games in the middle of the season. But a brief break and the acquisition of Ravi Ashwin has given them renewed life. While Ashwin’s figures are relatively modest – he has claimed 13 wickets at an average of 33.46 in his three games to date – his presence has lifted the side. He is clearly relaxed in the environment – he is enjoying walking around the city without being recognised – and has inspired some of his young team-mates to this revival. Ashwin was the only man in this side not to have graduated through the Worcestershire system. They are a couple of exceptional young players in this Worcestershire side. In 19-year-old Josh Tongue (who has 45 first-class wickets this season) they have one of the outstanding fast bowling prospects in the country – it is a long, long time since such a bowler came through the system here – while in 21-year-old Joe Clarke (who has 850 first-class runs this summer) they have one of the outstanding young batsmen. Both are set to be included in performance squads this winter.”To be top of the league with predominantly home grown talent, we are very proud of that fact,” Rhodes said afterwards. “To pick up maximum points with 10 Academy players makes you feel very proud.”The new-ball spell on Thursday, when Leicestershire were reduced to 10 for 4, was a pivotal moment in the game.”They did not have life completely their own way on the final day. Leicestershire’s eighth-wicket pair, coming together with the lead only 22, put on 103 in 23 overs as Worcestershire’s ploy of testing them with the short ball backfired. Zak Chappell, in particular, produced some nice pulls as he recorded the second half-century of his career – the first, an innings of 96, was made on his first-class debut – with Lewis Hill adding measured support. They played Ashwin well, too. Chappell brought up his 50 from 63 balls with a straight six back over the off-spinner’s head and, as the lead grew beyond 100 and rain necessitated a couple of brief interruptions, Worcestershire nerves began to grow. Finally, the short ball worked, though. Chappell and Doeter Klein pulled long-hops to midwicket before Lewis, left only with the No. 11, slog-swept to the square-leg boundary where Brett D’Oliveira held on to a well-judged catch. Leicestershire had lost their last three wickets for the addition of just six runs and Worcestershire required just 132 to win.The pursuit was not entirely straightforward – D’Oliveira missed an attempted scoop, Daryl Mitchell played on and Tom Fell, with a top score of 39 in all formats this season, looks as if he needs a holiday – but the pitch remained true and Leicestershire, without a win this season, lacked the belief to turn the screw as some sides might have done.It was, though, a day that offered some encouragement for Leicestershire, too. In 21-year-old Chappell they have one of the most outstanding prospects in the county game: an allrounder capable of bowling fast. He is raw, certainly – he is prone to fall away as he bowls and he doesn’t seem to gain much lateral movement – but he has the potential to be fine player. And in Callum Parkinson, who followed his eight wickets in the first innings – the best haul by a Leicestershire bowler since Devon Malcolm took 8 for 63 against Surrey in 2001 – with two more in the second to claim a first 10-for, they have one of the best young, left-arm spinners. Mark Cosgrove, the Leicestershire captain, went as far as describing him as “the best spinner in the game.” While that might be wishful thinking, he is one of the players that provides hope of better times ahead for long-suffering Leicestershire supporters.”Everyone’s attention was on Ashwin, but Parky outshone him quite easily,” Cosgrove said. “He’s got a massive future in front of him and hopefully we can get the pitch to turn at Grace Road.”They could do worse than learn from Worcestershire. While some clubs look for their cheque book when they require a player, Worcestershire look to their youth teams. The England management and selectors talk of Rhodes as the most helpful and committed of all county coaches, one of the few who never questions why a player might be called into a Lions squad or rested from a key match. He, and the likes of the academy coach Elliot Wilson are producing players who could serve their club and country with distinction. For that, the entire English game should be grateful. Promotion seems a just reward.

Burnley Hopeful About Signing £12.9m "Explosive Forward" Soon

Burnley are now hopeful about completing a £12.9m deal to sign Ajax forward Mohamed Daramy before their opening Premier League game against Manchester City on Friday night, according to a report from The Daily Mail.

Is Mohamed Daramy signing for Burnley?

Fabrizio Romano first broke the news that Burnley were in talks over a deal for Daramy last Thursday, with the transfer expert detailing that Vincent Kompany wants to sign the winger "at all costs", making him one of his "top" targets.

Ajax are said to rate the Dane "highly", but the Clarets are "pushing" to complete a permanent move, such is Kompany's level of interest, and there has since been a further update on their pursuit.

There have been reports that Ligue 1 side Reims are interested in hijacking the move for the 21-year-old, with the player yet to decide which club he would prefer to join, however their offer fell just short of the Premier League side's bid.

Ajax have reportedly already agreed to sell the youngster to Burnley for a fee of €16m (£13.8m), but a more recent report from The Daily Mail indicates they could get a deal done for slightly less.

It is detailed that the Clarets remain in talks over a deal for the starlet, with negotiations ongoing over a £12.9m deal, and the hope is that the move will be completed ahead of their opening game against Manchester City this Friday.

It is a tough start to the campaign for the Lancashire club, considering they lost 6-0 against the reigning Premier League champions in the FA Cup last season, but Kompany has made several additions to his squad since then.

Burnley have strengthened considerably in defence, bringing in Dara O'Shea and Jordan Beyer, and the manager will now be hoping to make Daramy his latest addition before his side's first match.

How good is Mohamed Daramy?

It is a little bit surprising that Ajax are willing to part ways with the attacker, considering his potential, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig lauding him as an "explosive forward", with "electric pace", who can "play anywhere across the front line".

The Ajax ace's versatility could be very useful to Kompany, and he poses a significant attacking threat, registering a total of six goals and six assists in 18 league games for FC Copenhagen in the 2022-23 campaign.

Having already made six appearances for Denmark, the 5 foot 9 forward is showing signs he is ready to take the next step in his career, after so far only proving himself in the Danish league, which is obviously significantly weaker than the English top flight.

With that in mind, it is unclear whether the Denmark international would be capable of making an immediate impact at Turf Moor, but he could certainly be a shrewd acquisition, given his vast potential.

Kompany has done a fantastic job of strengthening his squad with a number of young players ahead of his side's return to the Premier League, and he will be hoping that Burnley will be able to beat Reims to Daramy's signature in the coming days.

Wolves Handed Massive Boost Over 26-Year-Old’s Future

Wolves may be having a tought time of things at the moment, but they have received a brilliant piece of news regarding one Wanderers player.

How old is Max Kilman?

After enjoying an improved 2022/23 season last time around after Julen Lopetegui's arrival, and making an immediate impression as manager, there was some positivity in the air earlier this summer, with a good campaign potentially on the horizon.

Instead, the wheels have come off fairly dramatically, with Lopegetui leaving his post and Wolves arguably looking like the new Premier League campaign could be a struggle. Their opening game of the season comes away to Manchester United on Monday night, but they don't look in a good place ahead of the game, even though Gary O'Neil has come in as boss, following an impressive spell in charge of Bournemouth.

Having lost Ruben Neves during the summer transfer window, it is imperative that Wanderers keep hold of other important figures, with Max Kilman undoubtedly one of them.

Now 26 years of age, the Englishman has been a hugely impressive performer over a consistent period of time, starting 37 out of 38 league games last term, and making 107 appearances for Wolves in total. His current deal expires in the summer of 2026, and while that is still some time away, it looks like an extension is on the cards.

Max Kilman of Wolves.

Is Max Kilman staying at Wolves?

Writing on X, The Telegraph's John Percy dropped a huge update regarding Kilman's future, claiming he is putting pen to paper on a new five-year deal at Molineux, despite interest from reigning Serie A champions Napoli:

"Some good news for Wolves after a difficult few weeks: captain Max Kilman is signing a new 5-year contract and will be staying at Molineux. Official confirmation expected soon. Serie A champions Napoli made a £30m bid for the centre-back last month."

This is a massive boost for Wolves at a time when they need one, with retaining Kilman's services for more years to come arguably as important as any new signing that comes in.

The centre-back is approaching the peak years of his career and has been one of the first names on Wanderers' team sheet, so knowing that he has committed his future into his 30s is something that will be celebrated within the fanbase.

Kilman has been hailed as "absolutely unbelievable" by journalist Liam Keen in the recent past, and if he enjoys a strong 2023/24 campaign, he could even stake a claim to be part of England's squad at Euro 2024 next summer.

For Wolves to stay up this season, they may need their star central defender to step up and enjoy possibly his best year yet at Molineux, as he continues to grow as a player as each season passes, becoming more of a leader at the heart of the defence at the same time.

The importance of tying Kilman down to a new deal cannot be downplayed and the hope is that he is still in the starting lineup week in, week out when his contract eventually runs out in the future.

Aurelien Tchouameni Trolls £88.5m Real Madrid Man In Training

Aurelien Tchouameni has trolled new Real Madrid signing Jude Bellingham over a past incident with his latest social media post.

How much did Jude Bellingham cost Real Madrid?

This summer, after three years at Borussia Dortmund, the English midfielder completed a move to Los Blancos.

His transfer cost an initial £88.5m but the deal could eventually rise to £115m if certain add-ons are met during his six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bellingham has certainly gotten off to a great start to life in Spain too, having scored on his La Liga debut for Madrid over the weekend.

Indeed, playing away against Athletic Bilbao, it took the 20-year-old just 36 minutes to get off the mark for his new club as he netted in a 2-0 victory.

In The Guardian report of that game, it's noted by journalist Sid Lowe that Bellingham stood before "the sheer red wall of the noisiest stand of the most emblematic ground in Spain, the place they call the cathedral, arms spread wide, taking it all in" as he celebrated the goal.

The same article notes that Tchouameni was the first to join him in celebrating the goals and it seems to midfield duo have struck up a good relationship already.

At least, we hope it's a friendship as the Frenchman trolled Bellingham this week with an image shared on Twitter.

As you can see in the picture above, Tchouameni appears to have created the exact same moment he scored against his new English teammate as France knocked out the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup last winter.

In response to the message, Bellingham joked back: "Thought we agreed not to talk about that day…"

What languages does Jude Bellingham speak?

It will certainly be interesting to see how Bellingham gets on in his new environment and he appears to be settling in well both on and off the pitch.

Indeed, as evidenced by his goal and now this interaction online, things seem pretty smooth – and he's already learning Spanish too.

Back in July, Bellingham explained that a few of his teammates have been teaching him some rather rude phrases.

He said: “Lucas Vazquez and Brahim Diaz are probably my biggest Spanish teachers. Everyone's chipping in and teaching me bad words. I can't wait to try them out!”

In the past, the 20-year-old has shown a willingness to learn a new language, and can even be heard swearing in this BVB YouTube clip during his time in Germany with Dortmund. So he can speak English, a bit of German, and will presumably soon speak some Spanish too.

He certainly seems to be impressing his new manager. Indeed, after scoring on debut, the midfielder picked up plenty of praise from Carlo Ancelotti.

The Real Madrid boss told the press: "It feels like Jude Bellingham has been a Real Madrid player for a long time. He is out of the ordinary."

Although showing the sort of maturity he's already grown a great reputation for having, the Englishman didn't appear to be getting carried away with himself, saying: "I am not going to get too excited by the goal and the win."

Still, all things considered, it's been a dream start to life in Spain so far – even despite a bit of trolling from Tchouameni.

First win in twelve Sunfoil games as Titans trounce Lions

Two more draws added to the pile though, in the latest round of Sunfoil Series games

Firdose Moonda26-Oct-2017

Lungi Ngidi made the early breakthroughs•Associated Press

Results SummaryThe competition had its first winner and loser, as it breaks for almost three months with the Titans in the lead. They beat the Lions by nine wickets on a spicy Johannesburg surface that allowed the Centurion-based franchise to break away from the chasing pack, albeit by less than 11 points. The victory was marked by the return of 21-year-old pacer Lungi Ngidi, who took 6 for 37 in the first innings to leave the Lions reeling at 49 for 5 at one stage and limp to 180 all out. If not for Omphile Ramela’s 63 and Bjorn Fortuin’s 80, the Lions would have had even less to work with. In response, the Titans started strongly thanks to returning captain Aiden Markram, who has matured in leaps and bounds following his international success. Markram scored 85 but had little support in the face of a strong attack. Hardus Viljoen, Wiaan Mulder and Aya Myoli took eight wickets between them but Shaun von Berg’s 63 gave the Titans a 33-run lead. With Ngidi on fire and Malusi Siboto’s deceptive medium-pace, the Titans pushed home the advantage and bundled the Lions out for 165 and needed only 133 to win. Markram took them home with an unbeaten 81.In Kimberley, the Knights did enough to lie second in a rain-affected encounter with only one completed innings. Knights bowled Warriors out for 362 and Ryan McLaren rolled back the years to take 5 for 60. Colin Ackermann’s 187 was one of only two scores of substance for Warriors, with Lesiba Ngoepe notching up 52. Knights faced 100 overs in reply and after centuries from Grant Mokoena and Keegan Petersen, and were 391 for 5 when the match was drawn. The clash between the Cobras and Dolphins in Oudtshoorn promised plenty when Cobras took a 102-run first innings lead but petered out into a draw. Dane Vilas’ 161 held the Dolphins together against the returning Vernon Philander, who took 4 for 25 before an allround batting performance from Cobras stood them in good stead to push for victory. Zubayr Hamza top-scored with 88 while Philander brought up the rear with 80. Cobras were on the hunt when they took an early wicket but the Dolphins’ experienced players held out. Centuries from Morne van Wyk and Vaughn van Jaarsveld blunted the Cobras, who lie fourth, with Dolphins in fifth. On the national radar With the national bowling reserves depleted, Ngidi’s performance would have been the most pleasing for the selectors, not only for his pace but also his ability to take wickets at the beginning and middle of an innings. Also for Titans, Markram’s twin 80s were described as being worth at least a century on a tricky Wanderers pitch. Dean Elgar, his senior partner at international level, scored 34 and 25.The Lions had little to be pleased with but Mulder’s 2 for 26 continued an consistent run for him in the competition. At the other end of the bowling spectrum in experience terms, Philander made a comeback after being out of action since July and showed promising signs ahead of eight Tests later in the summer. He took 4 for 25 in the Dolphins’ first innings, and 1 for 19 in their second, conceded at less than two runs an over and scored 80.Keshav Maharaj was not in action for the Dolphins but one of his rivals, Dane Piedt, played in that match, captaining the Cobras. While Piedt was expensive in the Dolphins’ first innings he took 2 for 76 in the second. The other current Test cap in action was Theunis de Bruyn, who has a tough run since his 195 in the opening round. He was dismissed for 25 by Simon Harmer.Top Performers While the headlines belonged to Ngidi, Siboto’s contribution to the Titans’ win should not go amiss, especially as it took him to the top of tournament’s wicket-takers list. Siboto has taken 17 wickets in five matches at an average of 21.35.Leading the run-charts is Rudi Second, who was dismissed for 40 this week but just 27 runs behind him is van Jaarsveld, who is having a fantastic run. He has scored five fifties and a hundred in the competition so far and averages 60.00.In keeping with the high century count this season, which is now up to 40, some of the other top performers were also batsmen with Ackermann’s 187 and Vilas’ 161 worth a special mention.
