Rangers: Beale must sell Davies to sign £40k-p/w "beast"

Glasgow Rangers secured a relatively comfortable win against Ross County over the weekend which sets Michael Beale's Ibrox side up nicely for their vital Champions League playoff tie second leg on Wednesday evening.

The task against PSV Eindhoven will be tough, yet the Gers secured a famous 1-0 victory away from home against the same opposition a year ago and the boss will be hoping lightning does indeed strike twice.

With the transfer window closing on Friday, Beale may also be eyeing a late deal or two, and he alluded to it while speaking to Sky Sports.

What has Michael Beale said about incomings at Rangers?

In quotes relayed by The Scottish Sun), the manager said:

"I think there's been a little bit in terms of one or two names out there there's been a little bit of truth in that. But nothing for us to confirm right now.

"Come the end of the window you may see one or two out and one in but it is all open at the moment in that sense."

With Ianis Hagi already joining Alaves on a loan deal, could Beale move on another player, this time Ben Davies?

Does Ben Davies have a future at Rangers?

At the beginning of the month, The 4th Official gave a transfer update on the defender's future, saying that “Ben Davies told he is free to move away” and it looked as though the Light Blues were getting ready to sell their £4m signing after just a year at the club.

The 2022/23 campaign wasn't the greatest for the former Liverpool defender as he failed to rank in the top ten across the squad for overall Sofascore rating and tackles per game, while ranking seventh for interceptions per game, indicating that he wasn’t as influential as first anticipated upon his arrival.

The Gers have shown interest in a few defenders of late, with Zak Vyner and Jake Cooper the names mentioned. Cooper has recently signed a new deal with Millwall however and a move for Vyner doesn’t look like it will materialise.

As such, the 42-year-old may well be out to target the English Championship for someone else; Harry Souttar.

Are Rangers signing Harry Souttar?

The Leicester City centre-back was first linked a few weeks ago by journalist Geoff Peters, who said:

“Rangers are interested in taking Harry Souttar on loan from Leicester City. Souttar was an unused sub against Coventry at the weekend and not in the 20-man #lcfc squad tonight at Burton. Other clubs also monitoring the situation. His older brother John joined Rangers last year.”

Harry Souttar

Souttar has played 73 matches across the top two divisions in England since arriving at Stoke City in 2016, yet it was the 2022/23 season where he began to show his true worth.

Firstly, he starred at the 2022 World Cup for Australia, showcasing his defensive qualities by winning a whopping 4.8 total duels per game – at a success rate of 68% – while also making 5.5 clearances and 1.5 interceptions per game, good enough to rank him first and second in the squad for the latter two metrics.

Additionally, he was also solid for the Foxes during the second half of the season, despite their relegation, winning a staggering 3.2 aerial duels per game – a success rate of 86% – while he also ranked in the top ten for clearances and interceptions. Considering he started just 11 matches for the club, this is rather impressive.

The £40k-per-week centre-back was even hailed as a “beast” by journalist Sacha Pisani following Australia’s win over Tunisia at the World Cup, and he would be an excellent addition should Beale decide to move for him in the coming days.

They may well have to ship out Davies first, but it would surely be a worthwhile decision by the Gers.

Record-setting Taylor catches up with mentor Crowe

Ross Taylor became the joint-highest Test-hundred scorer for New Zealand on day three in Hamilton, something he never saw coming as a “white-ball player” growing up

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-20171:32

Feat ‘hasn’t really sunk in’ – Taylor

“I’m sure he’d be happy.” So said Ross Taylor at the end of a day when he became New Zealand’s highest century-maker in Tests, drawing level with his captain Kane Williamson and his mentor, the late Martin Crowe. The “he” Taylor was referring to, visibly emotional in a TV interview, was Crowe, whom he credited – as he often does – for moulding him into the batsman he is.”Hasn’t really sunk in,” Taylor said at the end-of-day press conference. “I thought about it [the record] a little bit last year, this year I haven’t really thought about it. At the start of my career, if you told me I’d get 17 Test hundreds, I would have said no chance. I always just saw myself as a white-ball player growing up.”Words of advice from Crowe aside – “had some good nights with Hogan, over some red wine, talking about my batting” – Taylor also had a tweaked technique to fall back on in his innings of 107, which helped grow New Zealand’s lead to 443 against West Indies in Hamilton. “I felt a bit rushed in the first innings,” he said. “It was nice to work a little bit on that and change my technique ever so slightly and nice to get the lead over 400, I think that was the main focus.”Asked about the specifics of what he had changed in his batting this innings, Taylor said: “Without giving too much away, just trying to stand a bit more side-on and not move as across my stumps as much… Sometimes, when teams are bouncing you all the time, you can have your weight a little bit more on the back foot. I tried to keep it more neutral, just trying to keep it relatively still and a pick the ball up, and I thought I pulled relatively well today.”Is breaking Crowe’s record on Taylor’s mind, then? “That was one of his goals, so I’ll try my best,” Taylor said with a laugh. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

Leeds Set To Sign £5.5m "Monster" Who’ll Turn Archie Gray Into An Elland Road Hero

Leeds United could finally be set to restart their summer spending, with a star acquisition reportedly nearing completion…

Who are Leeds United signing this summer?

Having already welcomed Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram and Karl Darlow to the club, with the loan capture of Joe Rodon also bolstering their ranks further, it must come as a surprise to manager Daniel Farke that his side is actually weaker now than when he first came in.

The mass exodus of Elland Road has seen numerous first-team stars jump ship, unwilling to try and steer the Whites from the mess they put them in.

Whilst frustrating, if they don’t want to be there, the German head coach likely does not want them.

Instead, he will look elsewhere for players who do, with a report from Last Word On Football now suggesting a potential deal for someone who would certainly improve them.

They note that the west Yorkshire outfit are actually set to sign Glen Kamara from Rangers, having been linked with a switch throughout the window.

His club are holding out for a fee of around £5.5m to sanction his exit, with that report also suggesting personal terms have already been agreed.

How good is Glen Kamara?

Despite their troublesome start to the campaign, there has been a sole area on the pitch that has impressed amidst all the turmoil.

Three Championship fixtures have failed to bring a victory, but at the very least a solid foundation for success has been seemingly built with a rock-solid engine room.

The Wales international has struck up an immense relationship with 17-year-old prodigy Archie Gray, boasting youth and energy in spades, with the former in particular offering vast experience despite being just 22 years old.

However, it is likely unrealistic to assume that the Thorp Arch graduate can hold down his spot for the entire term.

That is where Kamara can come in, to help fulfil that role and allow the teenager to take over in a few years, if not allow his attributes to thrive further forward as an attacking maestro.

After all, the Finland international is entering his prime years at 27 years old and would offer an added injection of pace, power, tireless energy and economical passing.

To justify these claims, his performances throughout the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership season are worth viewing, as his 7.01 average rating was buoyed by a host of outstanding other figures.

With three goals, three assists and a 91% pass accuracy, alongside 1.3 key passes and one tackle per game, there is little that Kamara did not excel at, via Sofascore.

The perfect all-rounder, his presence alone could help elevate the whole team.

It was therefore no surprise to see him lauded by former boss Steven Gerrard, who noted:

“He’s a terrific footballer in possession, always playing with his head up and looking to connect defence and attack.

“But what pleased me most is what I spoke about when we signed him in terms of how he’ll be out of possession. Will he hunt the ball back, be aggressive, work hard for the team and be a monster in the middle of the park?

glen-kamara-1

“He showed signs of that against Kilmarnock and potentially he can become a top midfielder.” This was supplemented by a further quote, where the Liverpool legend branded him a "class act".

Then, comparing his figures with Gray’s opening three games of the Championship term, it becomes clear that whilst promising he remains raw.

Kamara could help hone his 81% pass accuracy and 1.3 tackles per game, via Sofascore, into a more refined and confident midfield presence, moulding the youngster in his image whilst allowing him to retain his youthful exuberance that has instantly endeared him to fans.

It would likely take no time at all for Gray to become a hero at Elland Road, but should he manage to copy the performances of his potential new teammate, this would be a venture surely fast-tracked.

Four-day Test to have 98 overs a day

Also, the follow-on mark will come down from 200 to 150 as per the playing conditions for four-day games

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Dec-2017

Getty Images

Each day of the upcoming inaugural four-day Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe in Port Elizabeth will need to have a minimum of 98 overs per day, as per the ICC’s playing conditions. That is, eight overs more must be bowled every day than what is required in five-day cricket. Also, a lead of 150 will be enough to enforce the follow-on; in five-day cricket the mark stands at 200 runs.Timings for the first four-day Test

First session: 1.30pm-3.45pm

Tea interval: 3.45pm-4.05pm

Second session: 4.05pm-6.20pm

Dinner break: 6.20pm-7pm

Third session: 7pm-9pm

To accommodate the extra overs, the ICC’s playing conditions state that play will run for six and a half hours in all each day, instead of the usual six hours for five-day Tests. The home board shall determine the hours of play and duration of the sessions, with each session lasting a minimum of two hours and a maximum of two and a half hours. In Port Elizabeth, the normal hours of play are set to run from 1.30pm local time to 9pm, with the first and second sessions being two hours and 15 minutes each, and the final session running for two hours. An extra 30 minutes will be available to the fielding team to complete the minimum required overs each day.Beyond the half hour of overtime, any remaining overs cannot be carried over to the following day unless there has been a stoppage for “any reason other than normal intervals” – rain breaks, for example. Also, the last hour of play on the final day will officially commence only when 83 overs – it’s 75 overs in five-day Tests – have been bowled on the day. In cases where 83 overs are bowled ahead of schedule, then the calculations for the last hour will be dictated by the clock, as is the case in five-day cricket. The reduced follow-on mark is in keeping with the existing laws of the game, as already applied in domestic and other four-day first-class cricket. The Port Elizabeth Test will also be played as a day-night game, with the pink ball under lights. That means the first break – for tea – will be the shorter of the two at 20 minutes, with a 40-minute break for dinner following later. The match was handed Test status by the ICC in October, as a “trial”. Then ICC chief executive David Richardson had said that the trial of four-day Test cricket would run until the 2019 World Cup, although participation in it is not mandatory. He expected the shortened version to be especially beneficiary to the lower-ranked Test teams.”Whoever wants to play it can play it,” Richardson had said. “The real value is [for] teams like Ireland and Afghanistan, even Zimbabwe who have not been at their best. Teams visiting, for example, South Africa, might be more likely to [take a detour to] play Zimbabwe in a four-day Test than they would in a five-day Test. So I think it has a number of advantages.”

Injury sidelines Mathews for two ODIs

Mathews suffered a right hamstring tightness while he was batting against Zimbabwe earlier in the series. Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in his absence

Sri Lanka’s limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews has been sidelined with a hamstring injury for two matches in the ongoing tri-series in Bangladesh. Mathews will miss Friday’s ODI against Bangladesh as well as their next match against Zimbabwe on Sunday.Mathews suffered a right hamstring tightness when he was batting against Zimbabwe earlier in the series. Dinesh Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in his absence. It was initially feared the injury could have ruled Mathews out for longer, possibly the entire Bangladesh tour, but subsequent scans have allayed those concerns.Mathews has long been plagued by injuries, with calf strains the major issue over the past 18 months, though hamstring niggles have been a frequent worry throughout his career as well. The 30 year-old allrounder, who recently put down his recent injury woes to a the large number of games played in the early part of his career, is having his workload managed. He has been taken off Test-bowling duties, and his limited-overs bowling is understood to be evaluated on a game-by-game basis.A hamstring injury had troubled Mathews recently too when he had been ruled out of action for over two weeks. He picked up that injury while bowling in a T20 against India in Indore and could not compete his quota of overs.Mathews had recently been reappointed Sri Lanka’s limited-overs captain after he had stepped down from the post in July last year. For Sri Lanka, Mathews’ latest injury comes at an inopportune moment, with the team still searching for a settled batting line-up. A promotion, meanwhile, marks a swift about turn in fortunes for Chandimal, who not so long ago was uncertain of his place in the limited-overs set-up. The move is seen as a show of faith in a player, who is rated highly by new coach Chandika Hathurusingha.

West Ham: Moyes Could Make Antonio Better In Last-Minute £20m Swoop

West Ham United are set for a dramatic end of the summer transfer window, as David Moyes continues the hunt for further reinforcements on deadline day.

The Irons have recruited well this window, however, another target has been revealed as a potential acquisition for the east Londoners to chase.

Who could West Ham sign on deadline day?

It’s been speculated that the Hammers will search for a defender this summer, with names such as Marc Cucurella, and Ian Maatsen revealed as potential targets.

With reference to Maatsen, transfer expert Ryan Taylor revealed when speaking to GIVEMESPORT that the Dutchman is a player admired in east London.

“Maatsen has been mentioned to me multiple times throughout the window as a player West Ham really, really like.”

Earlier in the summer, Chelsea placed a price tag of £20m on the youngster's head, making him a potentially interesting coup for the Irons.

What is Ian Maatsen’s playing style?

Previously hailed as “complete” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Maatsen embodies all the attributes to be a threatening full-back in the Premier League.

Last season, the Dutchman endeavoured on loan in the Championship at Burnley and excelled at left-back, showcasing his strengths in defending and contributing in the final third.

Scoring four and assisting six in the Championship for Vincent Kompany’s side, and earned huge praise from the Belgian manager after scoring a brace against Swansea that season.

“Ian has given so much defensively and then he was able to add that to his game – not many players can give you that.”

For Moyes, the 21-year-old could add a terrific threat to the squad on show at the London Stadium, particularly to those in attack as suggested by his impressive averages last term.

As per FBref, the Chelsea starlet showed off his strengths in progressive play for Burnley, averaging 6.14 progressive passes and 3.51 progressive carries per 90.

With an average of 1.10 key passes and 1.12 passes into the penalty area per 90 last campaign, the Dutchman could be a huge asset to the likes of Michail Antonio, who finds himself most dangerous lurking in the box.

The Jamaican has begun the season in stellar form, scoring two in three of West Ham’s opening fixtures in the Premier League, a feat that could continue with a presence as strong as Maatsen integrated into the squad.

Described as “clinical” by journalist Paul Brown, Antonio could have his service in the final third taken to the next level through the young Dutchman, who has established himself as a menace from the wide areas.

As well as being another provider for the goal-hungry presence of the 33-year-old forward, Maatsen could fulfil the role of the defender Moyes is searching for.

As communicated by his average of 2.11 tackles and 1.45 interceptions per 90 last season, the 21-year-old is a solid member to have in the back line, with his abilities providing the Hammers with an option to replace Aaron Cresswell.

The right price could hand the Irons a new left-back to solidify the defence, as well as a player that could significantly bolster the outlook in the final third, making him the perfect acquisition for Moyes to consider.
