It’s streak v streak now; one team gunning for the top spot, the other fighting for another match of life
The Preview by Sidharth Monga in New Delhi 27-Apr-20195:18
Kartik: Bowling a big worry for RCB at the moment
Big PictureThis is the third time this IPL that Delhi Capitals are coming back to their home venue, Feroz Shah Kotla, full of exuberance and positivity. They first did so on the high of having beaten Mumbai Indians in Mumbai. Then they did so having built a three-match winning streak on the road, in Bangalore, Kolkata and Hyderabad. On both occasions they came crashing down thanks largely to a slow and low home surface. On this homecoming, Capitals are on their highest high. They have won seven out of their 11 matches – teams have previously qualified with seven wins – and are looking for that one win to all but ensure progress to the next round. You might wager they are more or less in, but these wins can take them into the top two, which gives them two shots at making the final.Form Guide
Delhi Capitals: Beat Royals by six wickets, beat Kings XI by five wickets, lost to Mumbai by 40 runs, beat Sunrisers by 39 runs Royal Challengers Bangalore: Beat Kings XI Kings XI by 17 runs, beat Super Kings by one run, beat Knight Riders Knight Riders by 10 runs, lost to Mumbai by five wickets
Up against them is an opposition on a streak itself, defying elimination, which has looked imminent for weeks now. Royal Challengers are hanging by a thread, but are not letting go of that thread. In their last three wins in a row, they have beaten Chennai Super Kings even though MS Dhoni needed two off the last ball, and Kings XI Punjab, who won the first 17 overs of each innings. It’s streak v streak now; one team is gunning for the top spot, the other fighting for another match of life. At the heart of it will be adaptation to a slow surface and an accurate forecast of the dew. In the last set of matches in Delhi, Mumbai Indians defended easily with no dew, and Capitals chased relatively easily thanks to the dew.In the newsDale Steyn won’t be coming back for Royal Challengers after he injected life into their campaign with a mid-season entry. His shoulder injury has cast a shadow over his participation in the World Cup too. That isn’t the only absence RCB will worry about. Moeen Ali too is back home for a preparatory camp with England ahead of the World Cup.Previous meetingCapitals went to Bangalore, restricted the hosts to 149 and then chased it down without much bother and with seven balls to spare.Likely XIsDelhi Capitals 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Prithvi Shaw, 3 Shreyas Iyer (capt.), 4 Rishabh Pant, 5 Colin Ingram, 6 Sherfane Rutherford, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Sandeep LamichhaneRoyal Challengers Bangalore 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Virat Kohli (capt.), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Shimron Hetmyer/Colin de Grandhomme, 5 Akshdeep Nath, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Washington Sundar/Pawan Negi, 8 Umesh Yadav, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Nitin SainiStrategy Punt AB de Villiers has been the spirit of Royal Challengers’ survival this season, but against Capitals he will have to work harder than against other teams. Since 2017, Kagiso Rabada has got him out in two balls. His problems against left-arm spin are well-documented too. So expect Capitals to attack him with Rabada and Axar Patel or even Ishant Sharma, who has managed to keep him quiet. Shikhar Dhawan has been a success story for Capitals, playing the role of the senior batsman among extravagant youngsters but without dropping his strike rate too much. He had to work hard to get there after an insipid start to the season. However, he doesn’t have a great record against the traditional outswing bowling of Tim Southee and Umesh Yadav. Also Yuzvendra Chahal has troubled him. The trio could be Royal Challengers’ bowlers inside the Powerplay.Stats that matter Ten players have scored more than 4000 runs in the IPL. Only Chris Gayle has a better strike rate than AB de Villiers’ 151.57. Gayle scores 0.2 run more over 100 balls. Second-innings scores at Kotla this year have ranged between 128 and 185, all depending on the dew in the night. With 150 wickets to his name, Amit Mishra is the second-most successful bowler in IPL, behind Lasith Malinga’s 166. Powerplay runs are crucial, and Shikhar Dhawan has scored the fourth-highest in that period this season. Among batsmen from these two teams, he also holds the best strike rate inside the Powerplay.

Captain challenges his fielders to return to positive ways after ‘stand-off’ attitude against Pakistan

Eoin Morgan admitted England paid the price for a “really bad day in the field” as they succumbed to defeat against Pakistan.Morgan, England’s captain, conceded his side “made mistakes we don’t normally make” that “cost us probably 15-20 runs in the field.” With Pakistan securing their first win in 12 ODIs by 14 runs, the consequences of such fumbles are obvious. As a result, he insisted England’s attitude to that part of their game would have to improve.”Fielding is an attitude thing,” Morgan said. “So it’s a matter of taking our stand-off attitude in the field today and getting back to our positive attitude where we go for everything. We need to create that fearless nature where we maybe take a half chance rather than standing off a normal chance.”If there was one moment that summed up England’s performance in the field in Nottingham, it came in the 46th over.Joe Root, at point, had just pulled off a fine save in the field to prevent a well-timed cut from Sarfaraz Ahmed. But then, with Sarfaraz just out of his ground, Root threw fiercely at the stumps only to see the ball bissect the fielders backing up and concede four over-throws. It was reflective of a somewhat messy showing that was in marked contrast to their excellence at The Oval. The nadir of England’s performance in the field came with Jason Roy’s dropping of Mohammad Hafeez. It was, by any standards, a straightforward chance: a mis-hit drive spooned up to long-off; a chance that, at this level, would be expected to be held every time. But the chance went down – Roy seemed to suggest the sun had caused him some difficulty; it didn’t seem obviously apparent that it should have done – and Hafeez, who was on 14 at the time, went on to top-score for Pakistan with 84.All sides drop the odd catch, of course. But the real issue for England here was that it wasn’t so much an aberration as reflective of England’s general performance in the field. ESPNcricinfo’s figures suggest there were 13 mis-fields in all.In the first over of the innings, Morgan failed to stop a routine effort at point to concede an unnecessary boundary. Maybe he was slightly worried about his recently fractured finger – he insists it is fine – but it was an out-of-character error that seemed to set the tone for his side’s efforts. It was a fielding performance that would have had Nasir Jamshed or Monty Panesar tutting at their TV screens in disgust. Some will blame complacency. But even the sub fielder, James Vince, fumbled a simple ball on the boundary that conceded an extra run. It is hard to believe Vince, who has played only 10 ODIs and is fighting to gain a place in the side, could be complacent. It seems more likely that concentration was the issue. A combination of nerves, a full house – many of them vocally supporting Pakistan – and the sense of expectation growing upon this England side, might have resulted in these fumbles. Either way, it will be a worry for an England side that prided itself on its performance at The Oval.It wasn’t a uniform story, though. Jos Buttler, one of the few men who endured a modest game in the field at The Oval, took a sharp stumping, while Chris Woakes held onto a World Cup record four outfield catches; one of them an outstanding effort on the long-on boundary. No non-keeper has ever taken more catches in an ODI for England. Jonny Bairstow, sweeping on the cover boundary, could also feel satisfied with his work, while Moeen Ali bowled especially well. The rest? It was an oddly sloppy-looking performance that, according to ESPNcricinfo’s figures, saw England concede 17 more runs than might be expected. Combined with the 11 wides their bowlers gave way, it left England chasing nearly 30 more than might have been the case. So while Morgan saw positive with his side’s performance with bat and ball, he put the blame for this defeat squarely at the feet of the team’s fielding performance.”With the ball we restricted them, bearing in mind the wicket was good and the outfield fast,” Morgan said. “And we recovered with the bat with that substantial partnership between Jos Buttler and Joe Root.”Those guys played brilliantly but they did just keep us in the game. They needed more help either from the other four in the top six or the guys down the order.”We’ve gone from one of our best performances in the field at The Oval to a, not extremely bad one, but one that has cost us probably 15-20 runs. And what were we: 14 runs short?”England’s problems might not be limited to the fielding, either. With Adil Rashid proving expensive (he went for 43 from five overs), Morgan only felt able to allow him five overs.Partially as a result, their over-rate suffered to the extent that there were more than three overs remaining by the time England would have been expected to complete their overs. In all, Pakistan’s innings over-ran by 19 minutes, though Morgan insisted the rate was cleared by the umpires.”I think our over-rate was good,” he said. “The umpires are my only gauge and they said we were level with three overs to go.”It’s only a few games since Morgan served a one-match suspension for repeated over-rate violations. While there is an amnesty on such issues for global events like this, the possibility that Morgan could be censured again here is very real. While that may only amount to a fine, it will remain on his record and be taken into account should England over-run again. Coming at this stage of the tournament, it is also a real concern. England do not want to be without their captain for the latter stages of the competition. For that to be relevant, though, they need to get there. And if they field like this, there is no guarantee at all of that.

Despite what their place in the Premier League table would suggest, Chelsea have actually been enjoying a run of good form of late, with five wins, one draw and just one loss in their last seven games in all competitions.
Those wins have seen them slowly climb up the league table, but perhaps more importantly for their season, it has seen them sneak into a League Cup final and the FA Cup fifth round.
The situation is looking much rosier for Mauricio Pochettino as things stand. Still, a week is a long time in football, and with the transfer window slamming shut at the end of this one, the Argentine could still catch the ire of the Stamford Bridge crowd if he oversees the sale of Conor Gallagher.
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
The Englishman has been one of the few consistently good players for the club this season and has taken the captain's armband in the absence of Reece James, yet rumours of his potential sale persist.
With this in mind, the links to other dynamic midfielders begin to make more sense, although if Todd Boehly and Co proceed with their plan to sell the fan favourite, they better hope that his replacement hits the ground running – let's take a look at three of them.
1 Jamal Musiala – Bayern Munich
Jamal Musiala
The first name on this list is one of the most highly thought of youngsters in world football, so much so that the German and English national sides battled it out to secure his services a few years ago, a battle Die Mannschaft eventually won. The player in question is, of course, Bayern Munich's jewel, Jamal Musiala.
The 20-year-old was touted for an £87m move to west London earlier this month, and if the Chelsea ownership want to appease any fan anger over the potential sale of Gallagher, then signing the German superstar in his place is about the best thing they could do.
It would also represent something of a homecoming for the four-time German champion, as he spent eight years in the Blues' youth setup before moving to Bavaria in 2019.
Since moving to FC Hollywood, he has exploded into one of the most dangerous midfielders on the planet, racking up 22 goal involvements in 26 Bundesliga starts last season before reaching seven in 11 so far this campaign.
Described as "one of the world's biggest talents" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and from looking at where he ranks amongst other midfielders in Europe's top five leagues for several key metrics, it's hard to disagree.
According to FBref, he sits in the top 1% for multiple statistics, including non-penalty goals, progressive carries and successful take-ons, while also sitting in the top 2% for things like shot-creating actions and non-penalty expected goals.
Unfortunately for Gallagher, he doesn't get anywhere close to the German prodigy, and while he is clearly a decent Premier League footballer, signing Musiala would represent an enormous upgrade.

2 Nicolo Barella – Inter Milan
Nicolo Barella celebrates for Inter Milan.
The second name on the list is a player who's less focused on scoring goals than Musiala and someone who perhaps more closely aligns with the sort of footballer Gallagher is, at least in ethos: a team player who never stops running and does the less glamorous, dirty work.
Nicolo Barella has spent the majority of his career starting in the centre of the park. However, he tends to float out to the right once the game kicks off. He fulfils the role of the 'mezzala destra', which essentially means he is given the freedom to get slightly further forward than a typical central midfielder while maintaining plenty of defensive responsibility as well.
The Italian was touted for a move to West London last month for a fee of around £80m, and while that is a significant amount of money, the quality and experience that he would bring to Pochettino's midfield might make it worth it.
Described as a "little warrior" by Kuilg, he would keep some of the busyness that Gallagher brings to the Blues' midfield while adding in some more quality passing and an increased attacking threat, something borne out in the numbers.

3 Bruno Guimarães – Newcastle United
kalvin-phillips-bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-opinion
The last player on the list would be the most expensive deal of them all, Newcastle United's Bruno Guimarães.
The Brazilian midfielder was touted for a move to the Bridge earlier this month after news broke that the Toon would likely have to sell one or two of their current stars to finance their future spending. However, this didn't translate to any discounts as the former Lyon man is still priced at around the £100m mark.
Since making his way to the English game in January 2022, the "complete midfielder", as Kulig described him, has become integral to everything the Toon do, making an impressive 69 Premier League appearances, in which he has scored ten goals, provided nine assists, won 39 games and lost 17.
It is his attacking output that would make him a good replacement for the Chelsea man, as his underlying numbers are that bit more impressive. For example, despite taking fewer shots on target per 90, Bruno has actually registered a league goal this season.
Ultimately, getting this deal over the line would take a considerable financial effort, but it would kill two birds with one stone: weaken Newcastle and strengthen Chelsea.

– Orgulho define!
Sheffield Wednesday's final day of the transfer window hasn't exactly gone to plan, a whole saga unfolding in front of their very eyes involving striker target Duncan McGuire as the American attacker attempts to get a last-gasp deal with Blackburn Rovers done at the expense of the Owls.
Losing George Byers in central midfield has also been a less-than-ideal development – the Owls fan favourite dropping down a division to join Blackpool on loan – but that blow could be softened by the South Yorkshire outfit hijacking a move for this Cardiff City midfielder at the last second.
Sheffield Wednesday sniffing around for last-ditch deal
Although it has been widely reported that Andy Rinomhota will be leaving the Bluebirds for pastures new at Rotherham United on Deadline Day, Wednesday could still attempt to swoop in and poach the 26-year-old from the Millers at the death.
A long-term transfer target of Rohl's men – with Football Insider first reporting about Wednesday's interest in the Cardiff number 35 in January – the Owls could well be tempted to try and sway Rinomhota to make a short detour to Sheffield away from Rotherham to get a shock deal potentially over the line in time.
Journalist Joe Crann reported the latest on deadline day…
With the lowly second-tier side in need of more midfield reinforcements – Byers leaving a hole in reserve for Rohl to fill – this has the feel of a last-gasp swoop the Owls will try to make happen in a bid to gain some positives from a dire Deadline Day.
How Rinomhota would fit into the Wednesday team
Capable of playing as both a holding midfielder and as a more conventional central midfielder, Rinomhota would undoubtedly strengthen Rohl's men if he arrived at the death.
Picking up nine assists and even scoring three times over 167 games to date in the Championship, the one-time Zimbabwe international could push the likes of Will Vaulks all the way for a starting spot if signed – the 30-year-old Welshman somewhat rusty in Wednesday's FA Cup clash against Coventry City recently, losing possession a costly 21 times in the 2-1 loss.
Whereas, although the 26-year-old Bluebirds man has struggled himself too in Wales this campaign, it would be an additional body Rohl could call upon with Byers offloaded to Blackpool at the last minute if Vaulks continues to underwhelm at Hillsborough.
The German boss will hope he can work his magic again on an out-of-sorts player if Rinomhota was to reject Rotherham last second for a move to their near neighbours in Wednesday.
Rohl has managed to get the best out of the likes of Marvin Johnson and Liam Palmer despite both being frozen out and chucked to the periphery prior to his arrival, hoping that he can get the best out of another fringe figure in the Cardiff man if he relocates to Wednesday.
At the peak of his powers, when still playing at Reading, the 5 foot 9 gem was a regular in the Royals first team with a goal and two assists managed from 42 games during the 2020-21 campaign.
Rohl will know any reinforcements at this stage of Deadline Day would probably prove to be positive ones in trying to help his Owls side stave off the drop, with Rinomhota a potentially shrewd purchase as they aim to replace Byers.
If the South Yorkshire side can revitalise the 26-year-old's faltering career and make him feel wanted again, the current Cardiff man could more than help his new team keep their heads above water in the Championship.
England fast bowler commits to county until end of 2022 season

Mark Wood has signed a three-year deal with Durham that will keep him at the county until the end of the 2022 season.Wood, 29, currently holds a white-ball central contract with England, and is more than likely to sign another after an impressive World Cup, meaning his appearances for the county could be limited. He is England’s second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, with 16 wickets at 23.06, and despite entering the tournament with question marks over his fitness, was picked in 8 out of a possible 9 group games. After playing age-group cricket for Northumberland, Wood joined the Durham academy as an 18-year-old, and has been at the county ever since. He first broke into the first team during the 2011 summer, and played an important, if unheralded role in the 2013 Championship win, taking 27 wickets in his 8 games.Wood’s Durham appearances have been limited in recent years due to injury and international selection – he made his Test debut in 2015 and has been a regular in England’s white-ball squads – but was the star of T20 Finals Day in 2016, returning 5-50 in eight hostile overs across the day as Durham were pipped by Northamptonshire in the final.Wood said he was “buzzing” to sign on for a further three years.”It is an exciting time for Durham at the moment, with the change in coaches and the new identity, so to be able to bowl more overs and take wickets for this team is something I am excited to carry on doing,” he said.”Whenever I step foot out onto the pitch at the Riverside, I just get a great feeling. It was extra special playing for England against New Zealand last week on home soil, so to know I have at least another three more years of playing here definitely makes me smile.”
