Warwickshire’s 19-year-old No. 3 scores unbeaten 139 as home side build commanding position

Warwickshire 303 for 4 (Yates 139*, Rhodes 82) v SomersetRob Yates notched his maiden first-class century as Warwickshire took a commanding position on day one of their Specsavers County Championship match against second-placed Somerset at Edgbaston.Closing on 303 for 4, the Bears were led by the 19-year-old academy product, who looked assured as he reached 139 not out from 286 balls, with 22 fours, passing his previous first-class best of 91, which came at the beginning of July at Hampshire. At 32 days shy of his 20th birthday, No. 3 Yates became the youngest Warwickshire batsman to score a ton since Sam Hain, who at the age of 18 years and 336 days, reached the total in his fifth match against Northants in 2014.Yates took his team to a position that might have seemed unlikely when Dom Sibley departed in the second over of the day. With plenty of eyes watching the 23-year-old ahead of the third Ashes Test at Headingley, Sibley found Roelof van der Merwe at gully, leaving the hosts 0 for 1 after just 10 balls. But with a short boundary in front of the Eric Hollies Stand, Warwickshire frustrated Somerset with an impressive 153 partnership from 232 balls between Yates and opener Will Rhodes.Rhodes, who would eventually depart for 82 from 117 balls after being caught behind off the bowling of Craig Overton, struck 13 fours and one six in addition to Yates’ 10 fours. That gave the Bears a platform and any Somerset hope of quick wickets were subsequently dashed by Hain. The England Lions batsman scored just 25 from 104 balls before edging to Steven Davies off van der Merwe, but he had continued to frustrate a Somerset side who used six bowlers. The partnership between Hain and Yates was worth 89, leaving the hosts on 242 for 3 and Adam Hose next in.With the new ball available after 80 overs, the visitors persevered for an extra 5.2 overs before changing during Jack Brooks’ 14th over. The move brought success with Craig Overton trapping Hose lbw for 17 from 36 balls, 20 balls later, earning him his second wicket. But wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose followed the trend, striking two fours in a 28-run partnership with Yates.
Jewell and Paine take Tasmania to stumps after Green and Mitchell Marsh pick up two wickets each

It was a stop-start day across at the WACA in Perth, with rain forcing the players off four times and allowing only 69 overs of play. In that time, Tasmania, who started the day on 0 for 4 with Jordan Silk and Alex Doolan in the middle, got to 5 for 217. Silk’s 44, Matthew Wade’s 40 and Caleb Jewell’s unbeaten 41 were the main contributions to their cause. For Western Australia, 20-year-old medium-pacer Cameron Green stood out, picking up two wickets, as did Mitchell Marsh. The rain certainly affected Tasmania’s progress on the day. The first interruption was on 12.1 overs, and they lost Doolan to Green on 15.2 overs. Then, later in the day, the players went off on 46.4 overs and Wade was dismissed by Jhye Richardson five balls after the restart.Despite that, they managed to keep the game on an even keel, getting to within 120 runs of the home side’s 337 with Jewell and Tim Paine in the middle.Doolan and Silk started the day well by scoring 41 runs together before Doolan was caught by Shaun Marsh off the impressive Green, who made it 2 for 61 when he went through George Bailey’s defence to hit the stumps.Rain forced the players off again after Bailey’s dismissal, but upon resumption, Silk and Wade put together a decent stand of 62 runs before Silk became the first of Mitchell Marsh’s victims, trapped lbw for 44. Then came one more interruption, after which Wade, fresh off an impressive comeback to Test cricket, fell to make it 4 for 146, which became 5 for 176 when Marsh bowled Ben McDermott. At that stage, Western Australia held the aces, but Jewell and Paine managed to see off the rest of the extended session without further damage, adding 41 runs for the sixth wicket when stumps were called.

Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to continue their recent good form as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United this afternoon at St James Park.
Gary O’Neil had seen his side lose just twice in all competitions across the first two months of 2024, and they were slowly moving up the Premier League table, but the loss today will be a tough blow to take.
The Magpies scored twice in the first half through Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, before Tino Livramento made sure all three points would be staying in Newcastle with the third.
Several key players failed to perform to the best of their ability and the defence were poor, especially Toti Gomes.
Toti Gomes’ game in numbers vs Newcastle
The centre-back has been in solid form this term under O’Neil, even earning his first-ever senior call up to the Portugal side back in November.
Against Newcastle, the 25-year-old was far from his best. He was only on the pitch for 59 minutes, yet the defender made zero tackles or interceptions, while winning zero ground duels during the clash against Eddie Howe’s men, showing how under par he was.

Toti also completed just 81% of his attempted passes, lost possession 14 times and failed to find a teammate with all four of his long ball attempts, indicating a very poor day at the office for the Portuguese international.
He wasn’t the only one to have an off day, however, as Nelson Semedo was expected to provide an attacking threat from the right wing yet failed to make any meaningful attacking contribution.
Nelson Semedo’s statistics vs Newcastle
The former Barcelona defender has been utilised on the right side of the midfield this season as O’Neil has preferred a flat-back three, yet Semedo has failed to impress going forward.
He may have looked keen to get involved, taking 92 touches throughout the clash, but willingness and intent are two different things.
Unfortunately for Wolves, Semedo failed to have any intent as he delivered just one accurate cross from five attempts, succeeded with 50% of his dribble attempts, made two key passes and failed to deliver five of his six long ball attempts.
Defensively, however, he was equally as bad, losing possession on 22 occasions along with winning only seven of his 16 contested duels and being dribbled past once, suggesting that he failed to really have a positive influence at either end of the pitch.
The defeat is a mere blip for the club amid their recent wonderful run, yet with several important players failing to turn up and perform, this could become a concern if it were to happen on a regular basis.
The Midlands side face a clash against Fulham next weekend and bouncing back to claim all three points is a must if they are to secure a top-half finish in the top flight this season.
Toti and Semedo will need to put their displays behind them and regroup ahead of next week, otherwise another defeat could be a possibility.

AB de Villiers will not lead the team at MSL 2019, with coach Mark Boucher saying the veteran doesn’t need that burden

Heinrich Klaasen, appointed captain of Tshwane Spartans by head coach Mark Boucher, expects the contingent of home-grown players to give his squad an advantage at the upcoming Mzansi Super League.Klaasen, who turned out for Titans in the CSA’s 4-Day Franchise Series in late October after returning from India, where he made his Test debut, joked, “I had a conversation with Boucher, he said I got fired from the previous job (as Titans captain), so I can get a chance here. I’m looking forward to this, especially with guys who have heaps of experience around the world.Tshwane Spartans squad

“I’m quite a relaxed captain. I try to get everyone’s point of view. Everyone has different ideas, so it’s always been my way.”Klaasen captained Titans with some success, even winning the 4-Day title in 2017-18, but with South Africa using him in all three formats in recent times, Titans turned to Grant Thompson to lead them.Last year, Klaasen played for Durban Heat, but playing for the Spartans means playing with many players who have intimate knowledge of SuperSport Park.”There’s a lot of old Titans players like Roelof van der Merwe and Morne Morkel,” he pointed out. “The characters and quality of players we have is unbelievable. It’s going to be good fun and hard cricket.”AB de Villiers is part of the set up, as are current Titans players Lungi Ngidi, Dean Elgar and Tony de Zorzi. “There are a few warm-up games, for us to find our feet, to get to know each other, it’s a good and exciting season ahead,” Klaasen said.’Don’t think AB needs that burden’De Villiers was the captain of the team last year, but Boucher explained that the team was happy to have him in their midst as just a player.”AB won’t be captain, we’ve discussed that,” Boucher was quoted as saying on the MSL website a day before announcing Klaasen as the team leader. “He’s a fantastic player but he must go out there and play and perform like he’s been performing in the last while.”I don’t think AB needs that burden, he’s in that stage of his life where he must enjoy his cricket and that’s probably when he plays his best.”
The Unai Emery revolution continues at Aston Villa, with the Spaniard guiding his side into the quarter-final of the Europa Conference League courtesy of a thumping 4-0 win over Eredivisie giants Ajax on Thursday evening.
With the tie finely poised following the goalless draw away in Amsterdam last week, the Villans took control of proceedings in the early stages, with red-hot marksman Ollie Watkins bagging his 22nd goal in all competitions – and his sixth in Europe this season – inside 25 minutes.
Despite subsequently losing the England international to injury, the hosts – who were no doubt aided by Sivert Mannsverk's second-half dismissal – utilised their man advantage to brutal effect, with goals from Leon Bailey, John Duran and Moussa Diaby sealing a famous win under the Villa Park lights.
What a way it was to bounce back from their humbling loss to top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, although that's not to say that it was all rosy for Emery and co on the night, with Morgan Rogers among a handful of starters who struggled to impact proceedings…
Morgan Rogers' performance in numbers vs Ajax
Plucked from Championship side Middlesbrough back in January after registering 16 goal involvements in the first half of the season, the promising youngster is understandably still finding his feet in his new surroundings, as was evident against the Dutch outfit.
Having not featured during the dismal defeat at the hands of Spurs, Rogers was thrust into the fray from the outset on Thursday evening, the 21-year-old lining up on the left flank as part of a formidable forward line.
Morgan Rogers
While the likes of Bailey, Diaby and Watkins all made their mark after getting onto the scoresheet, the young Englishman, meanwhile, was wholly ineffective in that wide berth, having been restricted to a measly total of just 12 touches.
Although the new arrival did enjoy a 100% pass accuracy rate and managed to register two key passes to help spark two openings prior to Watkins' early header, it was no real surprise to see him hooked at the break, with Emery perhaps holding fears that the winger could see red after picking up an early yellow card.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
The £8m addition may well find himself on the substitutes' bench for this weekend's trip to West Ham United, although he wasn't alone in having struggled on the left flank last night, with full-back Alex Moreno also "toiling" – as per The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell.
Alex Moreno's game in numbers vs Ajax
It may be harsh to be too critical of any Villa star following the nature of that statement win, although it is fair to say that Moreno was not at his best even amid the 4-0 triumph, with Birmingham Live's John Townley notably writing that the Spaniard 'struggled in the first half and was beaten on a few occasions on the wing'.
Alex Moreno
Subsequently awarded an unspectacular 6/10 match rating by Townley following that critical assessment, the left-back's woes were also showcased by the fact that he was particularly errant on the ball, having squandered possession on 17 occasions – more than any other player for either side.
Although the former Real Betis man was able to contribute one key pass in that quest to provide some attacking thrust from his defensive berth, he did fail to successfully complete either of his two dribbles, having also been unable to complete a single cross.

Not only something of liability going forward, the 30-year-old also came up short defensively after winning just three of his seven total duels and being notably outmuscled by Chupa Akpom just before the break, with teammate Lucas Digne no doubt ready to pounce on those woes by returning to the side on Sunday.
While Emery may not wish to change a winning team, having an experienced fixture like Digne in reserve should allow the former Arsenal boss the chance to shuffle his pack accordingly, as Villa continue their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
