Dharmesh Sheth drops manager news for West Ham fans, Steidten influence key

West Ham United fans have been handed an update on what their post-David Moyes future could look like courtesy of Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Moyes facing uncertain future

The belle of the ball 11 months ago after guiding West Ham to their first major European silverware since 1965, courtesy of a dramatic winner from Jarrod Bowen against Fiorentina, Moyes faces a much less certain summer ahead.

His side are seventh in the Premier League and still in the Europa League, but all is not well in east London. Such is the congested nature of the Premier League that the Hammers are just six points clear of 13th placed Bournemouth, and the money spent over the summer has not translated to better performances on the pitch, despite what the results say.

It means that a large portion of the West Ham fanbase are keen to see the back of Moyes, whose current deal expires at the end of the current campaign. He had been expected to agree a two-year extension earlier in the campaign, but a downturn in results put pay to that and now he is facing an uncertain future.

Performances like the one against Newcastle United won't help his case, with his side seemingly cruising at 3-1 up only for changes to disrupt their flow and see them ultimately fall to a 4-3 defeat.

"What?" – O'Hara baffled by what he's heard about West Ham's next manager

Moyes is walking a tightrope in East London…

ByBen Goodwin Apr 1, 2024 Insight provided for post-Moyes world

Fortunately, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has provided some intel on what life without Moyes could look like at the London Stadium, and it revolves largely around Tim Steidten's influence.

The former Bayer Leverkusen technical director arrived last year and owner David Sullivan described him as 'key to our wider plans to drive our football strategy forward'. He is set to have a big say on what happens if Moyes leaves too. As per Sheth, Steidten is 'likely to be at the forefront' of what happens next, and could even help West Ham transition to a more 'European' model.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

“If David Moyes decides to leave, it wouldn’t be surprising to see someone like Tim Steidten exploring the European market and possibly bringing in a manager well-versed in the structure of European football teams, complete with a sporting director and a structured approach,” Sheth explained.

“This contrasts with the more traditional managerial style that David Moyes embodies, where he prefers greater control over recruitment matters, a control he has largely enjoyed during his second stint in East London.

“Given West Ham’s shift towards a more European model, this decision will likely carry considerable weight, with Tim Steidten likely to be at the forefront of it."

With a growing desire from among the fans to play more exciting football following the arrivals of players like Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta, a European tactician could well allow them to do that, though it may come at the expense of results.

Silverwood's clarity can bring out best in Joe Root – Alastair Cook

Top three will be given a licence to bat all day, says former captain, as England seek Test reboot

Andrew Miller11-Nov-20191:38

‘Silverwood will support Root’ – Cook

Sir Alastair Cook has backed Chris Silverwood to bring the same clarity to England’s Test cricket that he offered to Essex during his agenda-setting spell as head coach, and believes that the team’s renewed focus on the longer form of the game will help bring out the best in his own successor as Test captain, Joe Root.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo on the eve of the New Zealand Test series, Cook acknowledged that England’s once-in-a-generation opportunity to win a World Cup on home soil this summer had led to an understandable prioritisation of their white-ball fortunes. But given the challenge of winning back the Ashes in Australia in two years’ time, he sees no reason why the red-ball squad shouldn’t be able to reach similar heights in the coming months.”New Zealand is a good place for Chris Silverwood and Joe Root to start a new cycle,” Cook said. “It’s only a two-match series, which is a bit of a shame, as their recent history has brought some cracking matches. You feel a long way away from everywhere, it doesn’t have the hype of an Australia or India series, but they are a brilliant side, and it’s a great but tough place to play cricket.”Though it sits outside the Future Tours Programme, and will therefore not count towards the World Test Championship, England have recognised the New Zealand series as a vital staging post as they begin to give the old format a bit of TLC – having rather muddled through this year’s Ashes, drawing 2-2 thanks to moments of inspiration from Ben Stokes in particular, rather than any coherent plan for Test success. And Cook, who stood down as captain at the end of a 4-0 defeat in India in December 2016, midway through Trevor Bayliss’s four-year tenure, is sure that the arrival of Silverwood as head coach will lead to a marked improvement in Test cricket – much as he oversaw Essex’s rise from the second division in 2016 to a first Championship title in 25 years the following summer.”Clarity, that is one thing he’ll bring,” Cook said. “He’s very clear on what he wants and it’s very simple what he wants. The players will know, they’ll be very well prepared, they’ll know exactly what he demands of them, and he’ll be a real helping hand for Joe Root, taking a lot of pressure off Root in terms of off-field stuff.”Root’s role across all formats has come under particular scrutiny in recent months. While there is no question about his enduring quality as a Test cricketer, his returns have slipped from the heights in recent years, along with his average, which – in spite of four fifties in five Tests against Australia – was 47.91 by the end of this summer’s Ashes, the lowest it has been for five years.Furthermore, Root’s average as captain has slipped to 40.81 in 33 matches – leading many commentators to question whether the burden of leadership is cramping his obvious style as a batsman. Cook, however, believes that a change of sidekick could be the key to unlocking his potential.Joe Root walks off with an unbeaten 75•AFP

“Trevor was a very hands-off coach, and he had a lot of success,” Cook said. “But there are different ways of skinning cats, and you can see that Joe needs that support around him. That’s quite obvious, and Silverwood and his team will give a bit more than Trev did.”I’m not saying that’s right or wrong, but I think that’s what will happen. And I think we’ll see the next stage of Joe Root’s England captaincy career. Looking back on my [time as captain], I think I took two and a half years to feel totally comfortable in the role, in terms of what you know, what you want from the side, and how you go about all the extra demands. Joe Root is at that kind of stage, I think he’ll bat at No. 4 again, and I’m expecting another spike from him.”Cook had sympathy, too, for the extent to which Root – a key member of the World Cup-winning squad – was forced to compromise his own team’s ambitions to support those of the white-ball captain, Eoin Morgan.”I don’t think Test cricket was [marginalised] when Trevor first came in for the 2015 Ashes,” said Cook. “But then, as the World Cup loomed, and the instant transformation of the 50-over team after 2015 brought momentum, I can see that [was true] for the latter period, those last two years.”But that was mainly for the players, they had that goal of being world champions, which is something no England team had done before, and at home too, so the opportunity was massive and you can see how the focus migrated that way.”But now the challenge will be doing it in both, and there’s no reason why England can’t be successful, looking at the facilities we’ve got and the players we’ve got.”If England are to find any sort of consistency in Test cricket, however, then the first thing they need to address is the flimsiness of their top three. Though Cook’s own returns at the top of the order tailed off in his final year of Test cricket (with the notable exception of his glorious farewell at The Oval in 2018), his absence was felt throughout a torrid summer in 2019, in which Rory Burns’ diligent crease occupation was the closest that any opener came to matching the sort of resolve that Cook displayed during his 161-match, 12,472-run career.”It’s been clear over the last six months that when England have played their best cricket, the platform has been laid at the top of the order,” Cook said. “And it’s not been runs scored but balls faced as well. As an opener you want to score runs, no doubt, but as Goochie says, you set up games, you have the opportunity at 0 for 0 when you want out to bat, to score 150 and set up a game of cricket.”Rory Burns faced a hell of a lot of balls,” he added. “After one bad game against Ireland [6 and 6], a certain Sky pundit [Nasser Hussain] said he’d pick ‘Opener A and Opener B’ for the Ashes. So he did really well in tough conditions to come back and score a hundred in the very next game, especially compared to the Australian openers.”Burns’ ‘Opener B’ in New Zealand may well be another player who has forced his way into the reckoning through his sheer weight of runs in county cricket. And while Cook anticipates a steep learning curve should Dom Sibley make his debut in next week’s first Test, he believes he’s already shown promising resilience in his short but eventful county career.”He’s done everything that’s been asked of him – an amazing start with a double-hundred at Surrey against Yorkshire as a 17-year-old, then a bit of a downward curve, then in and out of the side before a move to Warwickshire. He’s had a bit of a journey, and he’ll have that same journey in international cricket.”You’re never totally sure how he will play amid all that scrutiny – he has a slightly different technique to what is so-called ‘classical’, but he will do what he will do, which is face a lot of balls and hopefully leave well, and if he gets off to a good start, hopefully we’ll see a guy who is what Goochie calls a ‘run-maker’. He’s not going to blow sides away scoring quickly, but he will take a lot of shifting, and for this England side, that’s exactly what they need.”The message, Cook believes, will be that England’s top three will have licence to bat all day if needs be, because that will give the strokeplayers in the middle order – the likes of Stokes, Jos Buttler and, if he earns a recall, Jonny Bairstow – all the more opportunity to turn a match in a session with their natural free-flowing games.”I wouldn’t say there were mixed messages from Rooty and Trev to play positively, but there was confusion around how England want to play their Test match cricket,” said Cook. “There has to be a platform laid, and I think we’ll start seeing that under Silverwood.”The top three will be very specific in their roles. Your job is to score a hundred, and if it takes you all day, that’s your job – it’s not how quickly you score. If you’re batting at lunch, you are putting guys into their second and third spells, and if England are very clear on that, the message will filter down in county cricket. If you want to bat in the top three for England, you’ve got to be able to bat a long period of time. And if you can’t, you won’t.”Sir Alastair Cook was speaking at an event to mark 25 years of the National Lottery, which has raised £5.7 billion for grassroots sport. #BecauseYouPlay

Sky Sports: Newcastle eyeing move for £60m defender who is "ready to leave"

To say that Newcastle United have endured a frustrating season would be an understatement, with their injury list piling high enough to already force their attention towards the summer transfer window.

Newcastle transfer news

In their first season back in the Champions League since the 2002/03 season, Newcastle have learned a harsh lesson about squad depth, with Eddie Howe quickly left scrambling for options amid a packed schedule. What hasn't helped is his injury list, however, which has seen no limit on the number of players to reach the treatment table.

The biggest concerns on that list should be Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, who both suffered ACL injuries to not only end their current campaign but likely half of next season as well. This means that Newcastle have just one recognised central defender available in the form of Fabian Schar, whilst also deploying left-back Dan Burn in the role. A short-term solution, the Magpies have turned their attention towards the summer window.

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

According to Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg, Newcastle are now eyeing a move to sign Mohamed Simakan from RB Leipzig. The defender is reportedly ready to leave the Bundesliga club this summer, with his €70m (£60m) release clause up for grabs this summer.

Potentially competing against Tottenham Hotspur for his signature, Newcastle may hope that Simakan prefers starting opportunities at St James' Park over a possible place on the bench in North London.

"Phenomenon" Simakan could step up in Botman's absence

Even during his Strasbourg days, Simakan was impressing plenty, with reserve team manager Francois Keller saying via the official Bundesliga website:

"We quickly realised that we were dealing with a phenomenon. He tore the place up… I said to myself that we had the new Varane. He was athletic, powerful, assured and calm."

Now, it is Newcastle who could benefit if they make their move this summer to find a player who is more than capable of filling the shoes of the injured Botman next season.

As the summer approaches, the Magpies could be wise to make their move for the 23-year-old as soon as possible to fend off any interest from Spurs. Even if the deal is steep, the numbers indicate that Simakan is not a player to miss out on.

Confira a escalação: Santos; Khellven, Pedro Henrique, Thiago Heleno e Nicolas; Richard, Christian e Jadson; Nikão, Vitinho e Renato Kayzer.

Josh Inglis, Liam Livingstone, Jhye Richardson keep hapless Melbourne Renegades winless

Jhye Richardson and Mitchell Marsh took five wickets between them before the Scorchers openers aced the chase

The Report by Peter Della Penna07-Jan-2020A pair of half-centuries from Sam Harper and Beau Webster were neutralised by twin fifties from Josh Inglis and Liam Livingstone as the Perth Scorchers ensured the Melbourne Renegades continued to have a bagel in the win column, registering a six-wicket triumph at Geelong. Livingstone’s 59 off 39 dominated a century stand with Inglis to put the Scorchers on course for victory with an over to spare. The result drew them back even with the Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat on the table with six points, though the latter two have a match in hand.Getty Images

The battle of the RichardsonsJhye Richardson’s performance with the new ball went a long way towards laying the foundation for the Scorchers victory. He struck on the third ball of the match, bouncing out the Renegades captain Aaron Finch who pulled to deep square leg for a golden duck. He followed it up with a wicket maiden in the third, building up dot-ball pressure on Marcus Harris that resulted in an ill-advised flick across the line to send a leading edge to Chris Jordan at mid-off. Coming back at the death, he managed to strike once more, getting Dan Christian to slice an attempted wide yorker out to Livingstone at sweeper cover.Kane Richardson did his best to match his namesake taking the new ball in reply for the Renegades, but he struggled to achieve the same results. Three overs after Livingstone had driven Richard Gleeson hard to Finch at extra cover, Kane flummoxed Inglis with a slower ball for a gentle return catch. But it was the only blow he would strike on the night, ending with expensive figures of 1 for 31 in comparison to Jhye’s 3 for 22.The battle of the Marsh brothersLittle brother Mitchell won this emphatically on the night, which also went a long way towards the Scorchers victory. In the first innings, Shaun managed just two off seven balls before pulling Mitchell’s medium-pace to Livingstone at deep midwicket. Building off of Jhye’s early double-strike, the Renegades were tied down to 3 for 48 in seven overs. It took a concerted effort from Harper and Webster to rebuild the innings with a 71-run stand. But Mitchell intervened to stunt momentum late in the innings by breaking the stand in the 16th over when he had Harper slapping a wider delivery out to Ashton Agar on the sweeper cover rope for 73 off 46.Following the century stand by Livingstone and Inglis to open the chase, Mitchell came in at No. 3 and produced a pair of nuggety stands to keep the scoreboard ticking. He added 26 for the second wicket with Inglis, then another 18 with Cameron Bancroft for the third wicket to bring the Scorchers closer to the target during his 21 off 17 balls. Mitchell eventually fell in near identical fashion to how he dismissed Harper, slapping Gleeson out to sweeper cover.Bancroft and Tim David took the Scorchers within one shot of victory during a 24-run stand. Singapore international David slaughtered a pair of sixes over midwicket and tried to end the match attempting a third but was caught on the boundary to give Gleeson a third wicket. Bancroft ended the match a few balls later, driving Gleeson to the extra-cover boundary to finish unbeaten on 24.

All-round domination helps India seal series 2-0

A strong opening partnership, a lower-order cameo, and fiery fast bowling helped India romp home despite a collapse

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando10-Jan-2020

India huddle up after taking a wicket•BCCI

India rode a rapid 97-run opening partnership, and a blistering finish from Manish Pandey and Shardul Thakur, to a total of 201 for 6. Then their bowlers scythed through Sri Lanka’s top order, removing four batsmen inside the Powerplay, allowing Sri Lanka no more than 35 runs during the field restrictions, to derail their daunting chase. There was a half-decent 31 from Angelo Mathews and an excellent 57 off 36 balls – the highest individual score in the game – from Dhananjaya de Silva. Left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan also took 3 for 35 from his four overs. India also had outstanding personal contributions – Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul making half-centuries, while Navdeep Saini finished with 3 for 28, the second time in as many matches that he has impressed. More than their individual performances, however, India ensured there were few weak performances across their XI. They won by a whopping 78, bowling Sri Lanka out in the 16th over.India’s scorching startThirty runs apiece for each of India’s batsmen in the Powerplay. Sixty-three overall for India. Rahul and Dhawan didn’t stop there though. They stuck together for several more overs – their partnership worth 97 off 65 balls. It set the tone for yet another match that India would dominate – the hosts’ total almost certain to breach 170 after that stand. It was Rahul who looked menacing first, stroking Lasith Malinga through point in the first over, before hitting Mathews [playing his first T20 international since mid-2018] for successive boundaries in the next over. Dhawan had a nervous start. He could have been caught on 1 off the bowling of Mathews, had Dasun Shanaka judged the chance better at deep square leg.By the end of the Powerplay, though, both batsmen were striking serenely – Dhawan helping short-ish fast deliveries past third man, while Rahul was languidly launching de Silva’s offspin over long leg. Rahul made 54 off 36, and Dhawan 52 off 36. The pair had given India such a mighty platform, Virat Kohli even mixed up the batting order, and let Sanju Samson, Pandey and Shreyas Iyer all bat ahead of him.The finishing fireworksWhen Sri Lanka claimed wickets in quick succession through the middle overs, it felt like perhaps they could restrict India to the vicinity of 180. At the end of the 18th over, India were 167 for 6. Pandey had been batting nicely for several overs, but it was Thakur who really got the death-overs party started. He bludgeoned Malinga for six off the second ball he faced, then next over smoked Lahiru Kumara over the straight boundary, and then cracked him serenely over extra cover. Pandey hit two fours of his own through this period. Together, they put on 37 off 15 balls, and turned an imposing total into a gigantic one.India blast out Sri Lanka’s top orderIt was pretty much over by the time the Powerplay ended. Danushka Gunathilaka tried to pull Jasprit Bumrah from a terrible position, and spooned a catch to mid-on. Avishka Fernando struck a gorgeous six over midwicket off Thakur, but then sliced one straight to point next ball. Oshada Fernando was run out due to a mix-up, and Kusal Perera backed away and was bowled by Saini in the sixth over. With no batsmen in form, it was almost impossible to see Sri Lanka coming back from 26 for 4. Mathews and Dhananjaya staged a 72-run fifth-wicket partnership, but the stand needed to be pretty much twice that size for the visitors to have a chance.Bright spots for Sri LankaIn some India v Sri Lanka matches, there are zero positives for Sri Lanka, so casually do India put this opposition away. At least this time, there was some hope for Sri Lanka to hold on to. With Wanindu Hasaranga having done well in the first T20, Sandakan also proved a wicket-taking threat in this game, taking 3 for 35. It was Sandakan who claimed the wickets of both openers, as well as Iyer.On the batting front, Dhananjaya looked assured as he smote eight boundaries and a six. As ever, with Dhananjaya, he relied heavily on his timing than power. If Dhananajay, who is a decent ODI and Test bowler, can develop his T20 bowling as well, perhaps he becomes an excellent option for Sri Lanka. The issue, though, is that although players can shine on certain tours, very few perform consistently for Sri Lanka.
