Warne must unleash 8/10 Derby star who lost the ball 11x vs Portsmouth

Derby County unsettled League One leaders Portsmouth at Fratton Park last time out in league action, with Joe Ward for Paul Warne's men bagging twice on the south coast in the barnstorming 2-2 draw.

John Mousinho's men needed a spectacular strike from Owen Moxon late in the second half to gain a share of the points for the table toppers, Derby pushing Pompey all the way in an exhilarating 90 minutes.

There were some standout performers for the away side that helped the Rams unnerve the confident hosts on the day, including Corey Blackett-Taylor who could find that he's now undroppable in the Derby lineups going forward after starring in the action-packed contest.

It hasn't been the smoothest ride for the exciting winger ever since he left Charlton Athletic for pastures new, but everything could start to slot into place now for the ex-Addicks man in a Rams shirt after a strong showing against Pompey.

Corey Blackett-Taylor's performance vs Portsmouth in numbers

Struggling to keep a consistent spot in the Rams first team since moving in January – with the game at Fratton Park only Blackett-Taylor's fourth start since relocating – the former Charlton attacker will demand he's a main starter now after shining brightly versus Portsmouth.

Blackett-Taylor would play a key role in Derby's opening goal versus Mousinho's hosts, driving forward through the middle of the park unchallenged before teeing Ward up with one of his two key passes to drill home for 1-0.

Away from putting it on a plate for Derby's number 23 to shock the league leaders, the 26-year-old attacker would fire two efforts of his own on Will Norris' goal to try and help his promotion-seeking side pick up a big win.

He would win three ground duels in the game as a lively presence going forward too – despite losing the ball on 11 occasions – before being substituted off with five minutes to play.

Yet to get up and running still with his first goal for the Rams, with Blackett-Taylor bagging nine goals when back at Charlton, the former Addicks winger will hope today's game on the road at Wycombe Wanderers can see him break his duck for his new employers on the way to another vital league victory being secured.

This star display at Fratton Park means the 26-year-old's spot in Warne's XI should be set in stone from now until the close of the regular season in April, with Warne wanting Blackett-Taylor to kick on and be an even brighter spark as his side aim to secure promotion in the weeks to come.

Blackett-Taylor's season in numbers

Warne will want Blackett-Taylor to recapture his electric Charlton best regularly playing for the Rams now, with the 6 foot winger picking up seven assists on top of the aforementioned nine goals when still on the books at the Valley earlier this season.

Corey Blackett-Taylor for Tranmere.

It has been an arguably underwhelming switch to date for Blackett-Taylor moving to Pride Park, with the likes of James Collins and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing being the main men for Warne's outfit still, but the Rams number 27 showed flashes of his past Charlton excellence away at Portsmouth.

The tricky attacker's positive display received many plaudits after the final whistle was blown, with DerbyshireLive journalist Leigh Curtis handing out an 8/10 rating to Blackett-Taylor and describing his surge forward for Ward's first of the night as 'majestic'.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

Curtis also labelled the Derby number 27's performance as the best possible way to finally 'announce himself' after becoming an accidental background figure since joining, with lots more expected from the winger as he grows more confident in his new surroundings.

Rangers can send Lundstram packing by unleashing "gallus" starlet

Glasgow Rangers suffered a major blow to their Premiership title hopes on Sunday as Philippe Clement's men lipped to an uncharacteristic defeat.

Indeed, their 3-2 loss to Ross County was only their third domestic setback under the Ibrox manager and their first-ever defeat to the Highland side, which could have damaging consequences in the race for the title.

The truth is, Rangers were never at the races, despite going a goal up inside the first 20 minutes. Three second-half goals by the Staggies ensured there was no way back for the Ibrox side, who now need to win all six of their remaining matches to win the league.

The shock loss certainly proved that some of the senior players fail to perform when the pressure is on, evident against County and Celtic last season.

What is needed is yet another summer clear-out, with Clement bringing in his own signings to complement some of the players already in his squad.

Freeing up the wage bill is a must, which will be made easier by the fact there are several first team players who are out of contract in the summer.

Who could leave Rangers this summer

Overall, there are six players who, as it stands, will be departing Ibrox once the season is finished.

Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun, Kemar Roofe, Borna Barisic, Jon McLaughlin and John Lundstram are the ones who have yet to be offered a new deal, and if they leave, Clement could free up a total of over £90k-per-week, which could prove crucial with regard to Clement’s transfer plans.

A few short weeks ago, Lundstram was the only one on this list who had any chance of securing a contract extension due to a few solid performances under Clement.

This has looked like a purple patch, however, as his recent displays have been far shy of the required standard at the Light Blues.

John Lundstram’s statistics this season

The former Sheffield United midfielder struggled throughout the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign, scoring just five goals in 52 matches, failing to help Rangers win a trophy of any kind.

An underwhelming start to the current campaign under Michael Beale fuelled talk that this was going to be his final season at the Glasgow side.

Jack Butland

Once Clement arrived, however, Lundstram became a regular member of the starting XI and has missed only one game since mid-October, a clash against Motherwell on Christmas Eve.

Among his teammates, Lundstram currently ranks second in the squad for accurate passes per game (64.3) in the top flight, while also ranking fourth for big chances created (four), sixth for key passes per game (1.4) and fourth for tackles per match (1.7), which shows that, statistically anyway, he isn’t performing too badly.

Against County, however, the Englishman failed to track George Harmon, who pounced on Jack Butland’s parry to score the second goal for the host side and, in general, he looked lost at times.

During the match, Lundstram lost possession 12 times and while he did succeed with 90% of his passes, the midfielder offered next to nothing going forward.

Clement must finally drop wasteful Rangers man who was worse than Lundstram

The Light Blues attacker put on a horrorshow against Ross County on Sunday.

ByDan Emery Apr 14, 2024

The end of the season represents an ideal chance for the Belgian coach to release the 30-year-old, as he certainly won't be getting any better with age.

There are several players in the first team who could replace him, but there might be a player in the academy who faces the most important pre-season of his young career ahead of him that could replace Lundstram – Alex Lowry.

Alex Lowry's one last chance at Rangers

The young sensation made his senior bow during a Scottish Cup clash against Stirling Albion in January 2022, coming off the bench to replace the injured Ianis Hagi.

It didn’t take him long to make an impression, scoring on his debut appearance with a lovely shot from outside the box that nestled into the opposition goal.

Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry.

Another six appearances for the Gers followed, with Lowry grabbing a goal and an assist against Hearts in the final game of the season, showcasing his limitless potential and earmarking him as one to watch.

The midfielder was described as “gallus” by Scottish coach Andy Goldie, hailing his never-say-die attitude and ability on the ball, but he has failed to really kick on from that campaign.

Lowry made just one Premiership start throughout the whole of 2022/23, totalling just seven matches overall as injury disrupted his campaign.

Beale felt a loan move ahead of the current term was the ideal way for Lowry to gain more regular game time at a top-flight club, and it was announced that Hearts had taken the Scot on a temporary deal until the end of the season.

During his time at the club, the 21-year-old played 17 games, scoring once, and grabbing four assists, which, on the surface, certainly was solid enough.

Across ten league games for the Tynecastle side, Lowry created one big chance, averaged 1.8 key passes per game, succeeded with 1.4 dribbles a match along with winning 3.5 total duels each appearance on average, showing plenty of attacking intent in what was a loan spell designed to challenge him.

He was recalled by Clement in January, as the Belgian was looking to move him to another club on loan, but the player suffered a futher injury which has ruled him out ever since.

While he may play slightly further forward than Lundstram, Lowry has operated as a central midfielder a few times during his senior career, scoring once from that position.

Dropping him slightly deeper could perhaps take some of the pressure off him as he can play alongside a midfield partner, rather than try and make everything happen from an attacking midfield slot.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

It will be a big ask but getting him fit and healthy heading into the 2024/25 campaign could see Clement gain a player who is on the cusp of making it at the Light Blues.

Much will depend on his mentality and attitude, but the 50-year-old has placed his trust in youth before this season and he will certainly do it again if the player is good enough.

TV umpire to call front-foot no-balls in Women's T20 World Cup

This will be the first global tournament where on-field umpires will not monitor front-foot no-balls

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Feb-2020

Peter Della Penna

Satisfied with the recent “successful” trials, the ICC has decided to take the big step of leaving the adjudication of the front-foot no-balls solely to the third umpire for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, starting February 21 in Australia. This will be the first global tournament where the on-field umpires will not monitor the front-foot no-balls.Having discontinued early trials in 2016, the ICC opted to reintroduce the system of allowing the third umpire to exclusively call the front-foot no-balls for the first time during the T20I series between India and West Indies in late 2019, followed by limited-overs series between West Indies and Ireland in the Caribbean in January 2020.In a media release on Monday, the ICC said the trials were initiated in 12 matches and out of the 4717 deliveries bowled, the third umpire called 13 no-balls (0.28% of total deliveries). “All deliveries were judged accurately,” the ICC said.According to Geoff Allardice, ICC’s general manager of cricket, front-foot no-balls were “difficult” for the on-field umpires to call “accurately”, albeit that percentage being low. However, Allardice said it was pertinent that the no-balls be called accurately and hence it was decided that the third umpire take charge. “Cricket has an excellent track record of introducing technology to support the decision making of our match officials and I’m confident that this technology will reduce the small number of front foot no ball errors at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup,” he was quoted in the media release.”No-balls are difficult for umpires to call accurately, and even though the percentage of deliveries that are no balls is low, it is important to call them correctly. Since we first trialed this concept in the ODI series between England and Pakistan in 2016 the technology has improved significantly, enabling us to introduce it cost-effectively, and with minimum impact on the flow of the game.”New Zealand allrounder Suzie Bates, who is also the only woman on the current MCC World Cricket Committee, welcomed the decision, saying it would be “fair for everyone”.”It’s interesting to trial that for the first time at a World Cup,” Bates told NZC. “But I think if you have Twenty20 cricket recently, they tend to only refer [to the third umpire] when the batter has been given out, and then realise it’s been a no-ball that the on-field umpire may have probably missed during the game.”I think it’s fair for everyone. As a batter, you always want a free hit, so if there’s a free hit, and a few extra runs, that’s not too bad. It would be interesting to see how many actual no-balls there are in a match. I think, in general, in the female game we do tend to keep our foot behind the line; it’s probably more the waist-high full-tosses as well, I am not sure what the rule is on that. We’ll see how it goes, but as I said, a free hit is always lovely.”Last August, Allardice had explained the process how the third umpire would call the no-balls. “The third umpire will be presented an image of the front foot landing within a few seconds. He would communicate to the on-field umpire that a no-ball has been delivered, so every delivery on the field would be played as a fair delivery until called otherwise. The footage is shown on a slight delay, it goes to super slo-mo as the foot approaches the point of landing, and then it freezes. The routine works well, with the third umpire judging the no-ball off a picture that is not always shown on the broadcast.”In December 2019, when the trial was introduced during the India-West Indies series, the ICC had pointed out that in the event the third umpire found the pictures inconclusive to call a no-ball, “any benefit of doubt” would lie with the bowler. “It’s important to note that any benefit of the doubt lies with the bowler, and if a late no-ball call is communicated, then the on-field umpire will rescind a dismissal (if applicable) and call no-ball,” the ICC had said.

Sean Dyche has already picked out four Everton players he wants replaced

Everton manager Sean Dyche has already picked out four Blues players he wants to see replaced in the summer transfer window, according to an update from transfer reporter Pete O'Rourke.

Big summer ahead at Everton

Having been threatened with relegation from the Premier League all season long, Dyche and his players have enjoyed a superb week or so – arguably their most pleasing of the campaign. A memorable 2-0 win over Liverpool was followed up with a 1-0 triumph at home to Brentford, seeing them jump to 15th place and 11 points clear of danger.

Had it not been for the points deductions inflicted on Everton, they would be in an even healthier position, and the key now is to kick on this summer and make important signings, not to mention hopefully get the takeover of the club over the line.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is one player who has emerged as a reported target for the Blues, although he has just earned promotion back to the Premier League with the Foxes, arguably increasing the chances of him staying put at the King Power Stadium. He could be seen as a younger upgrade on Idrissa Gueue, though, having bagged four goals and five assists in the Championship this season.

Versatile West Ham man Ben Johnson has also been linked with a move to Goodison Park this summer, with the Englishman a shrewd squad option who can thrive in both defensive and midfield roles. Both players would be available on a free transfer.

Everton eyeing upgrade on quartet

According to an update from Football Insider's O'Rourke, Everton are eyeing a new right-back in the summer window, as they look to improve upon a host of players in that position.

The report states that "Nathan Patterson has struggled with injury while veteran Seamus Coleman is ageing", adding that Ashley Young and Ben Godfrey are "not viewed as first choice". An addition there is, therefore, seen as a "priority" to replace all four options and make the spot their own.

Right-back definitely feels like an important position to strengthen in before the beginning of next season, with the report perfectly outlining the issues in that area of the pitch surrounding various players.

Coleman has been a wonderful servant for the Blues over such a long period of time, proving to be such a consistent performer with bags of heart, but he turns 36 years of age later this year and is now a long way from the force he used to be. The same applies to Young, who does an admirable job at right-back when required, but is now 38 and too error-prone to be trusted in big moments.

Patterson's injuries are an issue for him, while Godfrey is arguably at his most effective as a centre-back, so focusing on a top-quality option on the right-hand side of the defence is vital.

Everton could sign a "monster" Calvert-Lewin upgrade

The club were previously linked with him in January.

ByEthan Lamb Apr 29, 2024

Admittedly, losing the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana would be a blow for Everton in the summer, but it would at least generate huge funds for additions, and a chunk of that should be focused on right-back.

Marnus Labuschagne proud to put on a family show with maiden ODI hundred

Century on return to childhood region has bittersweet taste after Australia succumb to 3-0 series loss

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Mar-2020

Marnus Labuschagne brings up his maiden ODI hundred•Associated Press

Marnus Labuschagne was proud to have put on a show for his extended South African family, even though he was unable to cap his day with victory for his adopted nation, as his maiden limited-overs century fell short of securing a consolation victory for Australia in the third ODI at Potchefstroom.Labuschagne made a run-a-ball 108 out of Australia’s 254 for 7, as he first helped his side recover from a ropey 55 for 3 after 15 overs, before kicking on to help add 61 in the final six overs. But despite his best efforts, South Africa sauntered to a 3-0 series sweep, winning with six wickets and 27 balls to spare thanks to Jon-Jon Smuts’ 84 and Heinrich Klaasen’s 68 not out from 63 balls.”It’s very special to come back to where I grew up and put runs on the board,” Labuschagne said, “but it’s disappointing to lose the game. It makes you second-guess yourself. Should I have tried to go earlier, try to get 280 or 300, but that’s part of the game. You need to make sure you learn.”Nevertheless, having grown up in the town of Klerksdorp, some 50km across the Highveld, this was a homecoming to savour for Labuschagne, who had some 50 friends and family packing the stands at Senwes Park and who for the most part went home extremely satisfied – with runs for their boy, but a victory for their home team.”I don’t know what I was thinking,” Labuschagne said. “It was amazing, the excitement. There was 50 of my family here and for them to see that moment, my first one-day hundred, was very special for me and for them as well.”Both my grandparents were here today,” he added. “It’s so special. The love and support I have gotten from them for a long time now, since I started playing cricket, they’re always interested and they always care and it’s really nice to be able to perform in front of them, especially after I got a duck last game. Both my grandparents are amazing and it’s a privilege to have them both here. I think my grandma would have shed some tears today.”However, it’s just as well for the extended Labuschagne tribe that Klerksdorp isn’t closer to Bloemfontein than Potchefstroom. For that was the venue of Marnus’s first-ball duck in Wednesday’s series-deciding loss, even if the highs and lows of cricket are something that all professionals need to take in their stride.”It’s part of the game,” Labuschagne said. “I was disappointed not because I didn’t score runs for them but because we lost. If I got a duck and we won the game, it’s alright, we’ve won the game.ALSO READ: Marnus Labuschagne’s South African origins and the pronunciation conundrum”It was disappointing to lose, [we were looking] to turn it around today, [but] 250 is probably not enough on that wicket and there’s probably a few different things that I could have done. It’s nice to score a hundred but to lose a game is still very disappointing.”Australia’s defeat capped a poor ODI leg of their tour, having won the T20Is 2-1 with two comprehensive victories either side of a tight 12-run defeat in Port Elizabeth, and gives them plenty to ponder as they look to regroup for the series against New Zealand that gets underway in Sydney next week.Nevertheless, when the dust settles on this result, Labuschagne knows that his home-town performance is one for the family annals, especially given how much of his cricket identity is invested in the region.”I was playing cricket 24/7,” he said of his childhood in Klerksdorp. “When we were here, my uncle used to throw me balls, when we were in Australia my sister used to feed me balls on the bowling machine. Everyone has played a part in some way or another.”My mom or my dad used to sit on the chair for hours and hours, and I’d be taking diving catches,” he added. “That’s just the way it is. Family is such a big part in my life and it was a nice experience to play in front of them today.”I wasn’t nervous at all. I was kind of excited, coming back to the place that I grew up in. It was nice to hear the cheering when you reach those milestones. You never how that’s going to end up, if the crowd love you or hate you. Maybe it’s a bit of both, a bit of love-hate. It’s exciting to be able to play in front of them, and maybe next year be back here.”
