Monchi and Emery now convinced Aston Villa can sign £79,000-per-week ace

Aston Villa transfer chief Monchi and manager Unai Emery are both convinced the club can strike a deal for a £79,000-per-week ace, following talks with his entourage.

Villa seal Champions League place as Monchi prepares for summer

It's been a historic full debut campaign for Emery, who has now officially guided Villa to Champions League qualification following Tottenham's 2-0 loss at home to Man City earlier this week.

The Spaniard has grown deeply popular with the fanbase after an exceptional last 19 months, following up Steven Gerrard's brief reign with real aplomb.

Villa will participate in Europe's most prestigious competition next season for the first time since 1983, with Emery's side boasting the fourth-best defensive record in the league and fifth-best in terms of goals scored.

Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea

Aston Villa 3-1 Bournemouth

Arsenal 0-2 Aston Villa

Following what has been a very memorable 2023/24 for Villa supporters, attention now turns to the summer transfer window and how Monchi could seek to back Emery with crucial potential signings.

The Midlands side are looking to strengthen across the board, with reports suggesting this week Villa are in pole position to sign Villarreal attacker Alex Baena. The Spaniard could cost around £52 million to prise away from La Liga, as is the value of his release clause, so it will be interesting to see if they decide to trigger it.

Villa have also held talks with Kelechi Iheanacho, as the Nigeria international is set to leave Leicester City for nothing this summer after the expiry of his contract. Defensively, Atletico Madrid ace Reinildo Mandava is on Emery's personal radar, and reports have even claimed he's urged Monchi to make a move for the Mozambique ace.

Emery and Monchi are also looking at upgrades for the engine room, so much so that a Paris Saint-Germain player is turning their heads.

Emery and Monchi convinced Villa can strike Carlos Soler deal

According to HITC this week, the Birmingham giants have opened talks with PSG midfielder Carlos Soler.

The Spaniard, once a star at former club Valencia, has played more of a bit-part role this season at the Parc des Princes. He's managed just 11 Ligue 1 starts, with most of his 23 French top-flight appearances coming off the bench.

PSG player Carlos Soler

This has stirred doubt over his future under Luis Enrique, and HITC claims the 27-year-old has been offered out to Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham. However, it is Emery's men who are favourites to sign him.

Indeed, both Emery and Monchi are convinced Villa can strike a deal for Soler after holding discussions with his camp pre-summer. On a reported £79,000 per week at PSG, they wouldn't exactly have to break their wage bill to bring him to England, and Soler could be worth the punt based on the praise he has received.

“We know his quality,” former PSG coach Christophe Galtier said in 2022.

“He has technical quality and the ability to get into the opposition penalty area. He’s from the Spanish school, keeps things tight. He didn’t start many games, but he’s a scorer.”

Stuart Broad's new-ball burst leaves England chasing final-day win

Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler sent up order as England look to set game up

Stuart Broad celebrates after bursting through Jermaine Blackwood•Getty Images

A new-ball burst by Stuart Broad has left England with sniff of victory and the chance to stay alive in their series against West Indies heading into the final day of the second Test. After Saturday’s washout at Emirates Old Trafford, England awoke on Sunday morning needing to take 19 wickets in two days. For a long time it appeared they wouldn’t come close as West Indies thwarted them with a confident, calm batting display as they initially set about avoiding the follow-on. Then came Broad, armed with the second new ball and a point to make.Wicketless in the series so far – after being left out of the first Test, much to his disappointment – Broad claimed three wickets for one run in 14 balls with West Indies still needing 18 runs to avoid the follow-on.Chris Woakes claimed three wickets of his own as West Indies lost their last six for 45 runs, limping past the 270-run mark to avoid following on and posting a first-innings total of 287, still 182 runs adrift.England signalled their intention to build the lead quick-smart, sending out Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler to open the second innings with about an hour’s play left on the fourth day.The move backfired somewhat when Kemar Roach, wicketless for nearly 11 months and 521 deliveries before claiming two scalps in England’s first innings, bowled Buttler for a three-ball duck and then Zak Crawley for 11.At the close, Stokes remained not out alongside Joe Root, with England leading by 219 runs.Broad was recalled for the second Test as part of a new-look attack alongside Sam Curran and Woakes following Jofra Archer’s disciplinary omission and the decision to rest James Anderson and Mark Wood.Half-centuries for Kraigg Brathwaite, Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase had West Indies looking steady and unflustered.Curran had done some early damage when he claimed the wicket of opener John Campbell late on the second day to send West Indies to 32 for 1 in reply to England’s 467 for 9 declared.Alzarri Joseph, the nightwatchman, was unbeaten on 14 when play finally resumed some 40 hours later, and he moved to 32 off 52 deliveries, surviving two chances. Joseph was dropped on 19 by Stokes, who appeared to have been distracted as Crawley started to dive across him in the slips before stopping himself, and withstood a run-out chance on 21 as Dom Sibley’s shy at the stumps from extra cover was off target. It was Dom Bess who got Joseph in the end with his second ball, tempting him into a prod to Ollie Pope at short leg.Shai Hope came in with something to prove, having struggled since posting twin centuries at Headingley in 2017. He did little to alleviate the pressure when Curran struck again with an offcutter that Hope edged to Buttler behind the stumps.Brathwaite looked settled, sharing in 50-plus-run patnerships with Joseph, Hope and Brooks on his way to 75, the latter union yielding 76 runs. Even when Stokes accounted for Brathwaite with a straightforward caught-and-bowled, there seemed no cause for panic with Brooks still at the crease and Chase and Jason Holder to come.West Indies remained on course, with Brooks and Chase adding 43 runs, but then England took the new ball in the 81st over, handing straight to Broad, who struck in his second over with it when he sent Brooks on his way, lbw for 68.Broad then negated any threat posed by Jermaine Blackwood, whose second-innings 95 was crucial in West Indies sealing victory by four wickets at the Ageas Bowl. Broad pegged back Blackwood’s middle and off stumps with a ball that kept low off a length for nought and Broad had two wickets in two overs.Another lbw in Broad’s next over accounted for Shane Dowrich, who reviewed the decision to no avail, with Hawk-Eye confirming umpire Michael Gough’s decision. When Woakes had Holder caught by Root at slip, West Indies still needed 10 to avoid the follow-on. Chase guided them past the mark with a four off Curran en route to his 51 before he fell to Woakes, as did last man Shannon Gabriel. All eyes will turn to England’s declaration and whether they give themselves enough time to take the second new ball late on the final day if needed.

Covid-19 impact: Zimbabwe v Afghanistan T20I series called off

The Zimbabwe government has said that that the country is not ready to host visiting teams yet

Zimbabwe’s five-match T20I series against Afghanistan, scheduled to be held in Harare later this month, has been called off in the wake of the latest spike in Covid-19 infections in the African nation, which has led to its government putting in place additional measures to check the spread of the virus.Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) had applied for a waiver to proceed with the series in a strictly controlled environment, but an increase in the caseload in the country has put paid to all that, with the government advising that the country was not ready to host any visiting sports teams yet.”We were keen to see the imminent and safe return of cricket, but we understand the government’s health concerns and accept that cancelling the proposed tour is sensible and in the best interest of players, match officials, volunteers, service providers, fans and the wider community,” ZC acting managing director Givemore Makoni said in a statement. India, too, were scheduled to visit Zimbabwe in August for three ODIs, but that series has been cancelled as well. As for away assignments, Zimbabwe’s three-match ODI tour of Australia, scheduled for early August, has also been postponed.

Arsenal ready bid for £51 million Kompany target as board aim to act fast

Arsenal are reportedly preparing a bid to sign a £51 million player targeted by Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich, and it is believed the Gunners want to act fast to win the race.

Edu could sign new world-class striker for Arsenal this summer

Mikel Arteta's side were praised for their excellent attacking form last season, despite just losing out on the Premier League title to eventual champions Man City, who won a national record fourth league crown in a row.

European club set for talks to sign "prolific" ace from Arsenal this week

It could be a summer of change at the Emirates Stadium.

ByEmilio Galantini May 29, 2024

The north Londoners scored over 90 goals in the league alone, with the majority of their strikes coming courtesy of Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz. Their attacking contributions came from across the forward line in the absence of a world-class natural number nine, which is testament to the fluidity of Arsenal's side going forward.

However, it has been widely reported that sporting director Edu could soon put that to an end, as Arsenal are actively seeking a new striker this summer. Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah are Arteta's only senior options in that position right now, but both are facing uncertain futures at the Emirates Stadium.

A guaranteed 25-plus-goals-per-season front man has long been thought of as the missing piece of the jigsaw, with Arsenal chiefs eager to source it before the start of next season.

"Arsenal are seeking to sign a prime striker before their pre-season tour," wrote reliable journalist Miguel Delaney for The Independent recently.

"Mikel Arteta has already long started work on plans for next season, and wants to bring in three first-team level players while moving out three or four.

They did already considered purchasing a striker in January, with that long seen as the final main piece missing. A move for Ivan Toney was considered then, but Brentford’s £100m price put Arsenal off, and he has since fallen way down the list of targets.

"Arteta wants to get all business done early, so the squad is immediately ready to work on a campaign where they are aiming to hit over 90 points. The plans have already seen in the market as reminiscent of Liverpool around 2018."

A forward who Arsenal have been regularly linked with is Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee, coming after the Dutchman's excellent Serie A campaign.

Arsenal preparing bid for Joshua Zirkzee

According to Italian newspaper Tuttosport, as relayed by Spanish media, Arsenal are preparing an official bid for Zirkzee, but Bundesliga giants Bayern also have the striker on their list of potential targets and are "involved" in the race.

The Bavarians, who will now be lead by new manager Kompany (Fabrizio Romano), possess a buy-back clause regarding Zirkzee – which hands them an advantage. However, if they decide not to formalise their interest, Arsenal would be handed a fairly clear run.

Arsenal chiefs apparently want to move quickly for Zirkzee as they seek to end their long search for a natural striker of real quality. Stefano Pioli, commenting on the £51 million Zirkzee last season, claimed he is a striker who "has everything".

INEOS eyeing Man Utd move for “one-of-a-kind” Fernandes successor

There simply aren’t enough superlatives in the English dictionary to describe just how fantastic and irreplaceable Bruno Fernandes is at Manchester United.

Absolutely everything positive involves the Portuguese Magnifico somewhere down the line, and he’s truly the club’s saviour.

It’s not unreasonable to say that without the captain, Erik ten Hag would no longer be in a job, as he ranked first for goals, assists, and chances created at the Red Devils last season.

However, with Fernandes turning 30 years old this year, it may be the perfect opportunity for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS to look for his successor.

Man Utd’s search for a young talent

According to a report from The Guardian, Man Utd are interested in signing talented youngster Desire Doue.

The young French player is on the radar of the Red Devils, as Ratcliffe looks to sign up-and-coming gems over big-name stars.

desire-doue-newcastle-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

It’s said that the Rennes player will be available for £33.7m this summer, with their president knowing his departure won’t be too far around the corner.

However, unfortunately for United, plenty of teams across Europe are also keen, including Bayer Leverkusen, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal.

Why Doue could become the perfect Fernandes successor

Although Doue’s talent is only truly becoming known as of late, the 19-year-old already enjoyed his breakthrough campaign in the 2022/23 season.

The versatile gem made 28 Ligue 1 appearances that year, starting 11 times, and picking up a relatively impressive four goal contributions.

However, his importance to Rennes became apparent last season, playing 31 times with 17 of them from the off in the league.

Progress had occurred, and there’s no better way to support that than his output, which increased to four goals and assists apiece, but what makes Doue a “one-of-a-kind” star, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson?

Firstly, the French ace is the definition of a technical mastermind who can genuinely do anything with the ball at his feet, which sounds rather similar to a certain United number eight.

Doue is a creator, a player who isn’t content with letting a game go by without his influence being felt, as shown by his key passes, passes into the penalty area, and shot-creating actions.

As displayed by his high progressive passes received, the number 33 is a master of linking the midfield to the attack, popping up in pockets where he can cause havoc, which shows he has the intelligence of a Fernandes-esque player.

Another attribute that Fernandes and Doue share is their ability to not just operate in multiple roles but also perform to the exact same standard, whether that’s as a winger, an attacking midfielder, or even a slightly more defensive number eight.

Yet what Doue already has in his locker over the former Sporting midfielder is that he’s pure “cinema,” as per Mattinson, when running with the ball, whether that’s taking players on with ease or driving into the heart of the defence with intent.

Nevertheless, in some ways, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Doue take on a role similar to what Phil Foden did while serving as an understudy to David Silva, and it’s common knowledge how that plan turned out – Foden named the Premier League Player of the Year for 2023/24.

Therefore, with the brilliance of Doue in mind, United simply must do all they can to beat the competition to his signature this summer, as he has the potential to become a world-class talent.

Lewis McManus unbeaten on fifty as dropped catches could prove costly for Kent

Hosts grass chances as McManus, Scriven post unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 85

Some 13 wickets fell during an enthralling day as Kent and Hampshire battled for ascendancy on the second day of their Bob Willis Trophy South Group clash in Canterbury.Though Kent are well placed having reduced the visitors to 108 for 5 in their second innings, the errant hosts will be angered by six dropped catches – blunders that may yet allow Hampshire to wriggle free in this hard-fought game.Hampshire, batting again by 3.35pm, having banked a first-innings lead of 21 and with 40 overs remaining, lost Ian Holland to the 15th ball of their second innings, trapped leaden-footed and lbw on the crease by Harry Podmore.Podmore celebrated in his next over by removing Tom Alsop. Aiming to work an in-swinger through the leg side, the left-hander was snaffled at third slip off a thick outside edge.In the tea over, former Kent skipper Sam Northeast completed a miserable return to his old stomping ground by falling cheaply to Darren Stevens for the second time in the game. Working across the line of an off-cutter, Northeast departed leg before for two.Two balls after the resumption, Felix Organ bagged a pair when his crab-like defensive push pegged back leg stump via an inside edge as Stevens claimed two in the over and Organ for the second time in as many days.Joe Weatherley should have departed four balls later, but his edged prod against Podmore was downed by Zak Crawley at second slip – Kent’s fourth drop of the game. Two runs on, Crawley made amends, hanging on to a low edge from Weatherley off a Podmore out-swinger.Kent’s cordon grassed a fifth chance when Jack Leaning spilled a Lewis McManus tickle at third slip off the bowling of Grant Stewart.McManus, who was dropped on 14, watched as his partner Tom Scriven was given a life on 36 when Crawley downed another tough, low chance at second slip off Stevens. That allowed Hampshire’s sixth-wicket pair to add an unbroken 85 through to stumps – comfortably the highest stand of the match to date – with McManus not out on 50 and Scriven on 42.Resuming on their parlous overnight score of 21 for 2, Kent’s seemingly powerful batting line-up proceeded to make a hash of their response losing new Test star, Crawley, to the first ball of the morning.Driving at a full-length off-cutter from Scott Currie, Crawley was sent packing lbw by umpire Billy Taylor for an eight-ball duck, then nightwatchman Matt Milnes followed, caught and bowled by Currie following a top-edged pull.Though the occasional delivery misbehaved off the pitch, Kent’s fifth-wicket partners Heino Kuhn and Leaning maintained positive intent. Dispatching anything loose, they added 34 until Leaning sparred at a Scriven out-swinger and nicked to the keeper.Hampshire’s astute medium-pacers Holland and Scriven excelled in tandem, and the latter squared up Oli Robinson with one that lifted, left and took the edge for a looping catch to second slip as Kent lunched on 101 for 6.Kuhn, solid for his 34 runs, drove rashly on the up to be caught at extra cover off Brad Wheal then Stevens, making a rare appearance at No. 9 in Kent’s order, fell for an eight-ball duck.Wheal enticed Grant Stewart to pull a bouncer straight to square leg, bringing together Marcus O’Riordan and Podmore for Kent’s best partnership.Last man Podmore hit out lustily while O’Riordan played each ball on its merits in a stand worth 47 off 62 balls. Their fun ended with the total on 170 when Mason Crane’s top-spinner snared top-scorer O’Riordan lbw for 37, leaving Podmore unbowed on 30.Currie returned 3 for 42, while Wheal, Holland and Scriven bagged two wickets apiece.
