Imagine him & Gordon: Newcastle battling Bayern Munich to sign £42m talent

Since the takeover by the Saudi PIF back in 2021, Newcastle United have conducted excellent business in the transfer market that has seen the club transform from relegation candidates to European hopefuls.

Eddie Howe, the man at the helm for the Magpies, has done an excellent job in creating a settled side with all the investment, with the vast majority of the signings making a huge impact at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak has undoubtedly been the best addition out of the bunch, scoring 35 times in his 67 appearances for the club since his £63m move to Tyneside from Real Sociedad.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

Anthony Gordon has also excelled since his big-money move to St James’ Park, with his figure of 21 goal contributions catching the eye of Chelsea in particular who have registered interest in the winger already this summer.

However, the club are lacking that third option in the frontline to really push the Magpies back towards the Champions League places, but their hunt may be coming to an end, with the club identifying one player who could fill the void.

Newcastle battling PL rivals to sign £42m youngster

According to German outlet Sport Bild, Newcastle are interested in signing Mainz right-winger Brajan Gruda who could be available for €50m (£42m) this summer.

Fellow Premier League side Aston Villa are also said to be interested in signing the 20-year-old, with Bundesliga outfits RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich also in the race to secure his signature.

The interest in the youngster is hardly a surprise, given his record of four goals and three assists in his 19 league starts last season, but the report states he wants to move to a side where he can guarantee regular first-team minutes.

Miguel Almiron has been the club’s most senior right-hand option in recent years, but with his future up in the air, the Magpies could sign Gruda who has the ability to solve the club’s issues.

Why Gruda would be the perfect player alongside Gordon

With Gruda being predominantly a right-sided attacker, he would be brought in to play alongside the wanted Gordon and replace the Paraguayan who could be set for a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia if reports are to be believed.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe withMiguelAlmiron

His addition would undoubtedly improve the forward line, providing an upgrade on Almiron whilst potentially able to form a deadly partnership with fellow winger Gordon.

During the 2023/24 campaign, Gruda – who is said to possess a "monstrous" left foot by analyst Ben Mattinson – dominated Almiron in numerous key areas. That included goals and assists despite featuring in five fewer matches than the 30-year-old.

The “superb” talent as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has also dominated with his progressive carries, completing 22 more than the current Magpies attacker – a tally that would create more frequent opportunities for Isak and Gordon should he arrive on Tyneside.

Gruda has also completed 3% more of the take-ons he attempted last campaign, providing more of an end product – contributing double the number of goals and assists per 90.

He may be a costly addition to Howe’s side, but he’s demonstrated key qualities that could improve his Newcastle side despite his tender age.

Newcastle player Anthony Gordon

With the German only breaking through into professional football over the past couple of years, he’s still finding his feet, but the sky is the limit for the talented youngster with Newcastle potentially able to sign a long-term replacement for the right-wing position.

1 a 0 Verdão.

Outscored Son & Richarlison: Spurs target £42m ace who’s like Watkins

The Euros are coming to a climactic conclusion this weekend as England have somehow slugged their way into the final to face off against the competition's great entertainers, Spain.

The Three Lions made it past the Netherlands in the Semi-final thanks to a spot kick from former Tottenham Hotspur icon Harry Kane and a last-minute goal from substitute Ollie Watkins.

However, while the tournament has transfixed the whole country over the last month or so, Premier League clubs have been hard at work in the transfer market.

Ollie Watkins celebrates for England

In fact, based on recent reports, the latest striker touted for a move to N17 has won comparisons to England's most recent hero, Watkins, and outscored Son Heung-min and Richarlison last season.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham have maintained their long-term interest in Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the story has revealed that their North London rivals Arsenal and Italian giants Napoli are also keen to land the Mexican's services this summer.

No price is mentioned, but a report out of Italy in May claimed that a fee of around €50m would be enough to tempt the Dutch side into selling, which is around £42m.

Feyenoord strikerSantiago Gimenez.

It might still be a sizeable investment, but given how well he played last season and his flattering comparisons to Watkins, Daniel Levy and Co should be doing all they can to sign Gimenez.

Gimenez's comparisons to Watkins

Now, before getting onto Gimenez's impressive goalscoring record, let's take a look at this comparison to England's recent hero, Watkins.

It stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues. In the Mexican's case, they consider the Aston Villa ace to be the eighth most similar forward.

This conclusion is easier to understand when looking at their respective underlying numbers.

For example, they rank very similar in metrics such as progressive passes and carries, aerial duels won, carries into the penalty area, and shot and goal-creating actions, all per 90.

It's not just his similarity to the England ace that makes the "insane" Feyenoord star, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, worth signing; he's also incredibly prolific in front of goal.

In fact, his tally of 26 goals and eight assists is better than anything a Spurs player could muster, including Son, who scored 17 goals and provided ten assists in 36 games, and Richarlison, who found the back of the net 12 times and produced four assists in 31 matches.

Ultimately, Gimenez looks to be an outstanding attacking talent, and his comparisons to Watkins and proficiency in front of goal should be all the reasons Levy and Co need to pull the trigger and bring him to N17 this summer.

South Africa to 'raise our fists' in support of BLM at start of Boxing Day Test

The team had not taken a knee, or made any other gesture, when they returned to international cricket last month

“We would like to use our sporting platform to raise awareness around an issue that matters deeply in this historical moment”•AFP

South Africa have confirmed that they would “raise our fists” at the start of the Test series against Sri Lanka in Centurion on Saturday “as a gesture to express our ongoing commitments” towards the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. This comes close on the heels of Mark Boucher, the team coach, saying that the squad had decided to express their support for inclusion after the interim CSA board issued a statement of concern over the team not making a gesture when they returned to international cricket last month.”We have taken the decision – through a process of deep democracy – to raise our fists at the beginning of the Betway Test series against Sri Lanka as a gesture to express our ongoing commitments,” the team said in a statement released by CSA on the morning of the match. “We recognize that gestures have histories and contexts, which carry meaning beyond themselves (both positive and negative) and that these gestures may be open to misinterpretation. Symbols also serve the purpose of communicating shared values and meaning.”We feel it is important to note that while American football quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, is now known for initiating the gesture of taking the knee, he began his protest by sitting during the singing of the United States of America (USA) anthem. His decision to move toward taking the knee was a response to his context and a desire to own a gesture that had deep significance in the USA political environment.Related

SA response to BLM – CSA's interim board concerned

“In the same vein as Kaepernick, we would like to use our sporting platform to raise awareness around an issue that matters deeply in this historical moment. We want to do so in a way that unites us around a gesture we own, which speaks to and resonates in our South African context, and which is connected to our own history of struggle for human rights.”On December 21, the interim CSA board chairman Judge Zak Yacoob wrote to director of cricket Graeme Smith and Boucher noting individuals’ right to freedom of expression, but stating that he felt South Africans should show “the world that all of us are together in opposing racism at every turn”.This came as a reaction to the team not taking a knee – or making any other gesture – on its return to international cricket, against England on November 27, the first time they played together since March. They did, however, wear black armbands to mourn the lives lost in the Covid-19 pandemic. Two days before the game, the team had issued a statement expressing their commitment to dismantling anti-racism by “building commitments to one another and demonstrating ways of engaging that we simply never have before as a team”. In that statement, the team harked back to the exhibition 3TC game in July, where all 24 players and every member of support staff involved took a knee. Boucher had said that in that act, the team felt “we have done what we needed to do”. The team then U-turned somewhat on that and a banner saying “we stand in solidarity against racism and gender-based violence” was on display in the stands at Newlands when they played England in two of the three T20Is. The third match was in Paarl and the banner was not transported to Boland Park. All 24 players and every member of support staff involved took a knee during the 3TC game in July•AFP via Getty Images

On the eve of the Boxing Day Test, Boucher confirmed that, following discussions within the group, “the guys have come up with a meaningful gesture”.In the latest statement, the team added: “We as the Proteas team have, on multiple occasions, declared our unmistakable support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign. We have openly discussed the topic on numerous occasions with the media and amongst each other and we are committed to continuing to do this work together.”We continue to own our journey and our previously stated stance on this issue (Players’ Statement and press release dated 25 November). We recognize that our actions will most likely result in criticism from some community, one way or another, but work to prioritise the team, to be honest about our own learning journey and to continue to make decisions that we can own in good conscience as a team, first and foremost, and as individuals.”The team also acknowledged that the raised fist has been an iconic gesture in various anti-race movements, and in South Africa’s own history.”The raised fist is a powerful gesture in our own history, as expressed in the iconic images of Nelson and Winnie Mandela on Mandela’s release from prison in 1990,” the statement read. “In this context it was a powerful gesture of triumph, an acknowledgment of the struggle against apartheid, and a commitment to continuing to fight for equality, justice and freedom, while also honouring the religious and cultural responsibilities of every member of our team.”The raised fist has a long history also within the Civil Rights movement. It has been used iconically within the sporting arena as well. For example, American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists during a medal ceremony at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games, later noting it as a ‘human rights salute’. More recently it has been used within the BLM movement. We recognize the historical and political connotations of the raised fist as a gesture of ongoing solidarity in the fight for racial justice and anti-racism work. So, we stand together and raise our fists as a gesture of solidarity and commitment to continuing the work of pursuing racial justice in our life-times.”

Aston Villa table new £25m bid to sign "superb" in-demand gem for Emery

With the new Premier League campaign fast approaching, Aston Villa have reportedly tabled a new offer to sign their eighth fresh face of the summer transfer window for Unai Emery.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have far from sat back and simply admired their Champions League place this summer, instead instantly stepping onto the front foot to welcome several reinforcements. The likes of Ian Maatsen, Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea have all arrived, whilst academy graduates Jaden Philogene and Cameron Archer have completed their returns and Amadou Onana has become the latest to move to the Midlands.

Speaking to the club's official website after sealing his return, Philogene said: “It’s the latest chapter in my Villa journey and hopefully I can play my best, get game time and do it in front of the fans.

“What I did at Hull, I want to do the same things at Villa Park; make the fans aware of my skills and score goals. It’s a dream come true. When I was a little boy I wanted to play in the Champions League. I’ve always thought I want to be there one day and here I am.”

There’s a realistic chance that he signs for the Villa Park side this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 21, 2024

Not resting on their laurels, however, after welcoming their seventh arrival, the Midlands club have instantly turned their attention towards another summer target. According to Gune Bakis in Turkey, Aston Villa have tabled a fresh €30m (£25m) offer to sign Semih Kilicsoy from Besiktas this summer and must now wait for the Turkish club's verdict on their new bid.

Besiktas have already reportedly rejected one offer from Villa for their 18-year-old forward which would have seen Alex Moreno move in the opposite direction on top of an €18m (£15m) transfer fee. Those in the Midlands have since upped their offer, though without the inclusion of Moreno, as they look to land a future star.

"Superb" Kilicsoy can replace Duran

Given that Jhon Duran's Aston Villa future has continuously been thrown into doubt this summer, it's no surprise that the Villans have gone in pursuit of a potential replacement in Kilicsoy. At 18 years of age, two years younger than Duran, the Besiktas forward enjoyed an impressive campaign in Turkey last season to earn the reported interest of Manchester United, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

Replacing Duran may not be an easy task, given how clinical he was with such little game time last season, but investing in another young forward who hit double figures for league goals last time out would certainly go a long way towards filling that potential void.

Dubbed "superb" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, Kilicsoy has quite the decision to make this summer if Besiktas accept Villa's reported offer. The Premier League and the chance to step into the Champions League in the Midlands potentially awaits for the young forward this summer, as Emery looks to welcome yet another addition.

Australia quick-bowler rotation back on the agenda

Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood played all four Tests against India

Hussey: Question marks in Australia batting apart from Smith, Labuschagne

National selector Trevor Hohns has hinted that Australia’s pace bowlers could be rotated during the series against South Africa after conceding they might have been better served doing so against India.Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood – alongside Nathan Lyon and allrounder Cameron Green – play all four Tests and were unable to secure victory on the final day in Brisbane as India chased down 328 having toiled at the SCG just a few days earlier when the visitors earned a draw. The first Test in Adelaide only lasted two-and-a-half days, with Australia sending down just 21.2 overs to bowl out India for 36 in the second innings, then India’s run chase at the MCG took 15.5 overs so the workloads had not been huge heading into the SCG. After failing to bowl India out in Sydney the pace attack were all given the approval of the medical staff to be good for the Gabba.”In hindsight, [we] possibly could have been done,” Hohns said when asked about rotation. “Prior to finalising any team we check with medical people and even check with our players sometimes just to find out how they are doing.Related

“Sure, the games were pretty tight and close together, maybe we have to be a little more mindful of that going forward. However, in this instance all the bowlers had recovered sufficiently for the medicos to give them the thumbs up.”We considered those three fast bowlers, who had performed very well over a long period of time, were the best ones for the job. Once we’d checked to make sure they’d recovered sufficiently we thought it was the best attack.”Normally, and I think a lot of people would say the same thing, when we score enough runs we generally back that attack to bowl sides. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen on this occasion.”The established pace trio are all part of the Test squad for the South Africa tour, and should that take place it will be three matches in less than a month during March, although there is a debate over whether Starc should keep his place on form.James Pattinson, who has recovered from the rib injury which kept him out of the squad for the last two Tests against India, Sean Abbott, Michael Neser and Mark Steketee are the other frontline quicks.Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the loss against India, head coach Justin Langer insisted the right decisions had been made.”I would have been a brave man coming into this Gabba Test match and not selecting those four bowlers. I mean, would you have?” he told ABC Radio.Mitchell Starc was not at his best in the last two Tests against India•AFP via Getty Images

“Tell me who you wouldn’t have picked — Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc or Nathan Lyon? With the series on the line, which one wouldn’t I have picked? I would have picked them every single day.”Pattinson was a member of the attack when Australia embraced rotation during the 2019 Ashes in England, although that was also somewhat conditions-based, while Neser has been ever-present around squads over the last two years.Abbott was called up for the India series following outstanding numbers in the Sheffield Shield but only rejoined the squad for the final two Tests following a calf injury sustained playing for Australia A.Steketee, the Queensland quick, has never previously been part of a full Australia squad.
