Arsenal recorded their second 2-0 victory of the Premier League season, with Mikel Arteta's men beating Unai Emery's Aston Villa side, to take six points from their opening two fixtures.
One player who stood out, with a goal from the bench, was Leandro Trossard, replacing Gabriel Martinelli who struggled to put his print on the game. Trossard entered the game in the 65th minute, scoring two minutes later to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead.
Trossard made 46 appearances for Arsenal last season in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing two assists, whilst alternative left-wing option Gabriel Martinelli made 44 appearances for the Gunners, scoring eight goals and providing five assists.
Arsenal transfer news
According to a recent report from HITC, Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling, after he was told he was 'out of the project' last week.
The player is currently assessing options both in England and abroad, but the 29-year-old is said to prefer a move to an English club, and ideally to stay in London.
Sterling made 43 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last season, scoring 10 goals, providing eight assists, and totaling 2,771 minutes played.
Sterling vs Martinelli comparison
Sterling, once described as "brilliant" by Jacek Kulig, has struggled since joining the Blues to find his best form, which saw him score 131 goals in 339 appearances for Manchester City.
On FBref's 'similar players' feature, Sterling and Martinelli are actually compared, their stats ranking fairly similarly, with a similar number of minutes and games played.

The £325k p/w star ranks between Martinelli and Trossard in most metrics, giving you a good indication that whilst each of the Arsenal wingers provides different assets, Sterling could perhaps offer a combination of the two.
Trossard was in hot goal-scoring from last season, backed up by his 0.67 goals per 90 metric, and he started the new campaign as he means to go on, scoring the opener against Villa yesterday.
Martinelli, on the other hand, has been slightly more creative, producing 5.68 progressive carries per 90, averaging 0.25 xAG (expected assists) per 90, and producing 3.92 shot-creating actions per 90.
Sterling outscored Martinelli, with 0.33 goals per 90 (to Martinelli's 0.27), whilst also outperforming Trossard in progressive carries, shot-creating actions, and xAG, further proving that Sterling could add a combination of the goalscoring and creativity output of the current Arsenal duo.
Raheem Sterling
And this is just if Arsenal get this current version of Sterling. If a change of environment could revitalise the English winger, you could see increased numbers in the final third, as he showed in his time at Man City, and this would provide Arteta with a better option than Martinelli on the flank.

Seamer back from off-season surgery as runners-up look to go one better

Jack Brooks appeals for a wicket in Somerset’s pre-season friendly against Worcestershire•Getty Images
Jack Brooks spent the final two months of 2020 virtually immobile following three post-season surgeries, so his hunger to walk back on field with his Somerset team-mates is as palpable as the club’s desire to go one better than their perennial runners-up spot in the new Championship season.Simultaneous Achilles operations in late October followed two weeks after surgery to replace a snapped tendon in his right hand, suffered in a freak fielding accident during the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord’s when Brooks’ thumb got stuck in the ground as he dived to stop an Alastair Cook drive.”I knew something bad had happened straight away, even though I could move it,” Brooks says. “I couldn’t physically force the ball into the thumb, so bowling was pretty tough until I taped it up and took a lot of medication.”They had to replace the tendon, which was a short operation in London but a bit frustrating when I knew I had to have my Achilles tinkered with as well. I was laid up in bed and was on crutches when I could be up and about.Related

Jamie Overton ready to step up sibling rivalry after leaving Somerset for Surrey
“I wasn’t really doing much but it gave me a little bit of time for reflection and to process a few things. I learned to walk again just after Christmas and I am back running, fully training now, and I feel as excited for this season as I have been in my whole career.”It has been a long and eventful career but, as Brooks prepares to turn 37 in June, he says: “There’s plenty of life left in me yet, I just need to get the body moving properly.” The hope is that his Achillles have been sufficiently repaired to allow just that.”The surgeon was really confident,” Brooks adds. “He said he should be able to get me back to 90 percent at least. The main thing for me was not just the cricket, it was walking or just being able to go out for a run, or gym, or do anything away from cricket.”I was getting to the point where I could hardly walk really, so it was amazing that I was able to play the five games I did last year, really in quite a lot of pain.” There’s been plenty of pain of the emotional kind at Somerset as well – too much, says Brooks. In holding out for a draw on the last day of the final, Essex added the Bob Willis Trophy to their two Championship titles from 2017 and 2019. It was their third first-class title in four seasons since being promoted from Division Two in 2016.Somerset, meanwhile, were Division One runners-up to Middlesex in 2016, Surrey in 2018 and Essex in 2019. All up Somerset have been runners-up seven times since 2000 and they remain one of only three first-class counties never to have won the Championship.Brooks, who joined Somerset in 2018 from Yorkshire, where he won two titles in 2014 and 2015, believes it’s not a case of making wholesale changes, but more subtle adjustments to deliver that elusive victory, given how close they’ve come in the past two years in particular.”We just need to show that bit more toughness in the real tough situations,” he says. “This club should definitely have won the Championship by now, really. From outside or in opposition for a while you think they’re always going to be one of those teams competing, and now being here, you wonder why, how come they haven’t got over the line.”Hildy [James Hildreth] once looked at the honours board in the long room and said, ‘I just worked I’ve finished runners-up 11 times in my career in various tournaments’. So if you convert a few of those, Somerset’s recent history could be completely different.”Hildreth, who made his first-class debut at Taunton in 2003, will have another shot this season. It’s easy to understand the argument that Somerset, who open their LV= Insurance County Championship campaign against Middlesex at Lord’s next Thursday, should challenge again with the talent they have.Dom Bess has moved to Yorkshire, where he will look to bounce back from a difficult tour of India and find more opportunity than he had behind fellow Test spinner Jack Leach, who remains at Somerset, with Craig Overton, Josh Davey and Lewis Gregory joining Brooks in the seam attack. In captain Tom Abell, George Bartlett and Tom Banton they have a formidable batting line-up along with the emerging 20-year-old Tom Lammonby, who made his first-class debut last year and scored three centuries to finish as the third-highest run-scorer of the Bob Willis Trophy.”It is frustrating being in that environment when you haven’t quite won it,” Brooks says. “I can give it the big ones and say, ‘I’ve got a couple, I’ll show you my medals,’ the lads might make light of it now and again but you know that it does hurt them, especially Tom Abell.”He is desperate, he is mad for getting some more silverware, especially the Championship. You can think of how good the party will be when Somerset eventually win it as well.”

West Ham United have been busy this summer, and while Julen Lopetegui boasts a first-team squad capable of fighting for a place back in European competition, the window has not yet slammed shut…
It looks decidedly unlikely that the Hammers will sign a centre-forward before this evening's deadline, but with Nottingham Forest exploring a move for James Ward-Prowse, space might be freed for an exciting new midfield addition.
West Ham eyeing last-minute signing
Indeed, as per Sky Sports' Dharmesh Sheth, West Ham are still hoping to sign Carlos Soler, with the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder available for €20m (£17m).
PSG player Carlos Soler
That might be an affordable figure, but the Irons have spent over £120m this summer and much hinges on player sales. Should the right cogs be shifted, Soler could be the latest high-class playmaker from Ligue 1 to sign for the east Londoners.
What Carlos Soler would bring to West Ham
He needs no introduction, but Dimitri Payet is still one of the most talented players to ever play in a West Ham shirt. Signed from Marseille in France for just £10m in 2015, his short stint in the Premier League has left a lasting impression.
The former France international scored 12 goals and claimed 15 assists during his stunning debut campaign, proving to be one of the division's great entertainers and even being hailed as "one of the most important players in Europe" by Zinedine Zidane.
He might have fled at the midpoint of his second season, with West Ham foundering and Payet flattering to deceive with his head early elsewhere, but those halcyon days of utter brilliance are woven into the club's modern fabric – wouldn't Lopetegui love to repeat the feat.
He could do just that with another Ligue 1 signing in Soler, who has been described as an "incredible player" by former coach Raul Martinez and has maintained an impressive level of prolificness at PSG despite a bit-part role that has seen him start just 26 top-flight fixtures since signing from Valencia for €20m (£17m) in 2022.
PSG midfielder Carlos Soler
Indeed, as per FBref, Soler ranks among the top 10% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 18% for assists, the top 10% for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 18% for passes attempted per 90, emphasising that excellent technical quality.
He's also as versatile as they come, capable of operating across a range of roles to inflict real damage on West Ham's opponents, finding space to strike on goal while also keeping a watchful eye on creative openings.

For now, West Ham supporters can only wait with bated breath for a potential development in Forest's pursuit of Ward-Prowse. Should the free-kick specialist be moved on, a more refined upgrade could be found in Soler, with the 27-year-old sure to thrive in a role of significance under Lopetegui's leadership.

The 32-year-old allrounder has confirmed he will continue to play franchise cricket

Thisara Perera celebrates a wicket•Associated Press
Sri Lanka allrounder Thisara Perera has announced his retirement from international cricket. A white-ball stalwart, Perera was known for his hit-the-deck bowling and his clean ball-striking down the order. Of all batters with at least 2000 runs in men’s ODIs, Perera’s strike rate of 112.08 is the fourth-highest of all time.He conveyed news of his retirement to Sri Lanka Cricket on Monday morning. While he will no longer turn out for Sri Lanka, the 32-year-old has confirmed he will continue to play franchise cricket. For starters, he has indicated that his involvement with the Jaffna Stallions Lanka Premier League franchise, of which he is captain, will carry on. Perera has at various points over the last few years been unable to pursue opportunities with T20 franchises around the world due to national commitments. His retirement came after he is understood to have been told by Sri Lanka’s team management that he, along with several other senior cricketers, would not be picked for the forthcoming ODI series against Bangladesh, with the team looking to blood new players. He was, however, still in the mix for T20Is, with a view to him potentially being part of the T20 World Cup side later this year.Although Perera’s ODI form has been patchy at times, his striking ability was still viewed by most selection committees as a significant asset in the shortest format. However, Sri Lanka’s refusal to make him a mainstay of their limited-overs XIs since 2015 is understood to have led to frustration.Perera had also been perturbed by his sidelining from the Test team, despite his having taken four wickets and struck an 86-ball 75 in the last game he played, against Pakistan in 2012. In fact, these Test frustrations had prompted him to hand over a notice of his Test retirement to the board at age 28. The board had not taken this letter particularly seriously; in any case, a Test retirement was moot, because he had not been in the frame for selection in that format for several years. He had, however, been elevated to captaincy in the white-ball formats, leading Sri Lanka in three ODIs in 2017, as well as nine T20Is between 2017 and 2018. Although his wicket-taking ability with the ball had waned since his earliest years in the team, Perera remained capable of ballistics with the bat. His highest score of 140 off 74 balls (only international hundred) came in January 2019. In 2020, he was Sri Lanka’s third-highest scorer in a victorious ODI series against West Indies, having produced 106 runs at a strike rate of 136 through the course of three matches.Nevertheless, the onus on developing young talent with a view to the 2023 ODI World Cup has seen him drop out of favour with selectors.Perera would be remembered, also, for his contributions to Sri Lanka’s 2014 World T20 triumph, and for hitting the winning six in that final, after being sent up the order.
