The PCB has increased its number of centrally contracted women players across the A, B and C categories from nine to 12, and awarded 10% salary hikes in each category. Bismah Maroof, who is on maternity leave, retains her place in category A, while Fatima Sana and Kainat Imtiaz have been promoted from the emerging category to category C. Wicketkeeper Sidra Nawaz, meanwhile, has been demoted from B to C.Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu is the only player to have earned a new contract while Nida Dar, who dropped down from A to C last year, has been promoted one level to B. While the number of players in the top three categories has gone up, the emerging category now has one fewer spot, going down from 9 to 8. The PCB has announced that the one remaining spot is open to be earned.”To ensure that the players who have not earned central contracts stay motivated, we have announced an open spot in the central contracts to be awarded to one player for outstanding performances during the year,” said Urooj Mumtaz, head of the women’s selection committee. “I am sure this will act as an incentive for the players, who are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting series against West Indies in Antigua.”Pakistan Women are presently in the West Indies for three T20Is and five ODIs, with the A team set to shadow the senior side and play an additional six matches. Pakistan Women’s last international fixture was in Zimbabwe, where they won the first ODI before the remainder of the series was cancelled when Emirates Airlines, the Pakistan team’s carrier, announced it would suspend its operations in the Harare-Dubai route eight days before their scheduled departure.Nida Dar has earned a promotion from category C to category B•IDI/Getty Images

Before that, Pakistan Women had toured South Africa, where they lost the ODI series 3-0, and won the third and final T20I to deny the hosts another series sweep. Since the aborted Zimbabwe tour, Pakistan Women haven’t played any international cricket, but a group of 26 players underwent a skills and fitness camp in Multan and Karachi.”The last year has been an extremely challenging one owing to the Covid-19 pandemic,” Mumtaz said. “Despite that, the PCB continued to significantly invest in the women’s game and organised international and domestic cricket for the women cricketers, with the tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe and a domestic T20 competition. The board also invested in three high-performance camps over the 2020-21 season, which also included one camp for 27 emerging players.”Though the sample size of the on-field performances is small due to the limited number of matches, we, while awarding the contracts, have also incorporated the feedback from the national coaching staff in regard to fitness and skill levels displayed at the high-performance camps.”The annual contact will run from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022, but the PCB said it would review performances after six months to rejig the contracts. “To negate the element of complacency, the national selectors will hold a review after six months, and, if needed, the committee might revisit the categories,” Mumtaz said. “However, we are hopeful that these players, who are currently on the historic tour of West Indies, will continue to raise the standard of competitive cricket as we aim to become strong contenders at the international level.”Category A: Bismah Maroof and Javeria Khan
Category B: Aliya Riaz, Diana Baig, Nida Dar (promoted from C)
Category C: Anam Amin, Fatima Sana (promoted from Emerging), Kainat Imtiaz (promoted from emerging), Nahida Khan, Nashra Sandhu (new contract), Umaima Sohail, Sidra Nawaz (demoted from B)

Ipswich could axe Hutchinson with January move for "unique" PL star

Ipswich Town will already be pondering what moves to make this coming January, praying that some deals in through the door during the transfer window could steer the Tractor Boys away from the relegation drop-zone in the Premier League.

Until then, however, Kieran McKenna will be tasked with picking his troops up from off the floor after a sobering 4-1 defeat to West Ham United last time out, as Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus toyed with the away side in the humbling demolition job.

Omari Hutchinson will know he needs to up his performances moving forward, to remain in his manager’s good books, after struggling throughout the one-sided contest at the London Stadium.

Hutchinson's performance vs West Ham

The former Chelsea youngster would have a quiet afternoon away at the Hammers, with no end product present in the 20-year-old’s game, away from some slaloming runs attempting to unlock the home side’s defence.

Hutchinson would fail to register a single shot on the home side’s goal during the 4-1 win in favour of the hosts, whilst also failing to deliver a single accurate cross into the box from two attempts, as the flashy attacker failed in his mission to breach Julen Lopetegui’s men time after time.

The 20-year-old, much like some of his other flustered teammates, has seemingly struggled with the gigantic step-up in quality, with zero goals coming his way from seven Premier League contests to date.

In stark contrast, when starring in the league below week in week out last season, Hutchinson would score an impressive ten strikes from 44 games, playing a key role in McKenna’s side unbelievably sealing promotion up to the elite division.

Long gone are the days now when the Tractor Boys number 18 would hammer home goals like this to send the Portman Road masses into raptures, with McKenna perhaps tempted to revisit this deal in January to boost his side’s attacking midfield numbers away from the former Chelsea man.

The transfer Ipswich could look to revisit

Back in the summer, the newly promoted outfit were linked with an ever-growing list of exciting faces, as the Ipswich boss went about adding in sprinkles of quality here and there to ensure his side took to the step-up well.

There might well be a regret on the Suffolk side’s end now that they didn’t try and tie up a deal for Miguel Almiron to join from Newcastle United, who is undeniably experienced at the level, having been reportedly been interested in his services back in May, as per TEAMTalk.

Although it does look as if the Paraguayan’s time at St James’ Park is coming to a natural end now – with the same outlet more recently reporting that a January exit looks in store – the table above shows how much of an asset he has been to the Magpies in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons, with a stunning 11 goals picked up during the 2022/23 campaign.

Last year, Howe would go out of his way to wax lyrical about Almiron – even when his form wasn’t blowing the league away – describing the South American attacker as “unique”, with the 30-year-old clearly very highly thought of.

Almiron could well have even struck up an electric relationship up top with Liam Delap if the pair had managed to link up with each other at Portman Road, with the raw former Manchester City striker netting an impressive four goals from seven league games, even as his team struggles like they did away at the London Stadium.

Newcastle United forward Miguel Almiron.

Adding in the 30-year-old could also have meant McKenna was less reliant on having to play Hutchinson in a number ten role behind the lone Delap, with the former Manchester United coach turned Tractor Boys icon then pushing the ex-Chelsea attacker back to the flanks or onto the bench.

Almiron would then tussle it out with Conor Chaplin to the rights over that main attacking midfield spot, with plenty of positives to latch onto if a deal had been successful.

There could be a chance still that this move is reignited in January, with Almiron looking to be heading for the exit door soon in Tyneside, as McKenna attempts to boost his relegation-threatened side with some new welcome additions shortly.

Ipswich wanted to sign "amazing" PL forward, they got Delap instead

Ipswich Town will be relieved that they snapped up Liam Delap now.

Rain denies Surrey after Lewis Goldsworthy offers lone resistance to Dan Moriarty's spin

Somerset saved by rain as DLS calculations unable to kick in before deluge

Somerset 220 (Goldsworthy 96, Moriarty 4-30) vs Surrey 66 for 0 – No Result Lewis Goldsworthy’s impressive 96 and Dan Moriarty’s controlled 4 for 30, both List A bests, were the stand-out performances of a rain-ruined Royal London Cup match at the Kia Oval in which Surrey were left an agonising two overs short of gaining victory against Somerset on Duckworth Lewis Stern calculations.Surrey, to their huge frustration, were cruising at 66 for no wicket from just eight overs when rain intervened for the final time, in reply to Somerset’s 220 all out in 48.3 overs. With a minimum of ten overs needing to be bowled at the team batting second, both sides ended up with a point apiece from the no result.Initially chasing 217 from 48 overs, due to the first of several afternoon rain squalls, Surrey were 7 without loss from 2.3 overs when more heavy rain arrived. After a delay of 100 minutes, play resumed with Surrey’s DLS target now 147 from 25 overs and, immediately, openers Mark Stoneman and Ben Geddes set about Somerset’s attack to plunder 59 from 5.3 overs.Stoneman, unbeaten on 29, smashed Josh Davey through extra cover and straight drove Sonny Baker powerfully for another four, while Geddes also hit out attractively with five boundaries to reach 31 not out before more rain forced the abandonment.Goldsworthy, the highly-promising 20-year-old Cornishman in his first full season, had earlier almost single-handedly dragged Somerset past 200 with a superbly-paced 105-ball innings that featured three late sixes and also six fours. It was, however, an ultimately disappointing day for a near 5,000 crowd and unbeaten Somerset now have three wins and two no results from their first five group 1 games, while Surrey have two wins and two no results from their initial five Royal London fixtures.Matt Dunn struck two new ball blows after Somerset had chosen to bat, the Surrey paceman producing excellent deliveries to have Sam Young caught behind for a duck, driving, in the third over and James Rew pouched at second slip for 6 four overs later.Steven Davies swung Rikki Clarke for six and also struck seven exquisitely-timed fours in a 32-ball 45 before steering Nick Kimber’s pacy seamers to backward point, and James Hildreth unfurled one beautiful extra cover driven four off Kimber before Clarke had him caught behind for 19 with the first ball after a drinks break.Goldsworthy, who had narrowly avoided being yorked by Kimber first ball, could only watch as Moriarty had Eddie Byrom lbw for 2, prodding half-forward, and then sent back Davey for 5, edging to keeper Jamie Smith an attempted reverse-sweep.That was 114 for 6, in the 24th over, but at least Kasey Aldridge and then George Drissell hung around long enough to help Goldsworthy put on 27 and 25, respectively, for the seventh and eighth wickets. Both made 12 but Aldridge edged a rising ball from Kimber to slip and Drissell was smartly stumped by Smith from a legside ball from Moriarty that would have been called as a one-day wide had he not overbalanced.Marchant de Lange was then bowled by Moriarty for 4, aiming a legside swipe when he might have better concentrated on supporting Goldsworthy, and it took a sensible 7 not out from last man Baker to enable Somerset’s rising young batting star to press down the accelerator in the closing overs.Goldsworthy first swung Clarke high over long on before adding two more sixes, both off Dunn in a 47th over costing 22, again clearing the ropes over mid wicket and long on besides collecting two fours with a thick-edged slash to third man and a punch through extra cover. There was one final four, a flat-batted pull off Kimber wide of mid on, before Goldsworthy was caught above his head on the wide mid wicket ropes by Tim David as he clubbed Ryan Patel’s medium pace to leg in a bid to reach three figures.

Arsenal hierarchy plan to sign Saka alternative with internal talks held

Arsenal’s hierarchy are planning to sign an alternative to Bukayo Saka, and it is believed that internal talks have been held behind-the-scenes over this possibility at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal dealt Bukayo Saka scare after England injury

During the Three Lions’ 2-1 humbling at home to Greece, manager Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff were dealt a ‘heart in mouth’ moment when Saka was forced off the field with a hamstring problem.

Arsenal very worried "world-class" player will miss a month with injury

The Gunners fear he’s set for a spell on the sidelines.

The £195,000-per-week star – an absolutely pivotal player for the Premier League title hopefuls – put fear into the hearts of supporters as well – considering how important he is to Arsenal’s challenge for a first league crown in 21 years.

However, interim England boss Lee Carsley then eased those concerns with an update prior to their win over Finland. Carsley explained that Saka would’ve been close to contention for the Finland game, but they withdrew him as a precautionary measure, and fully expect the 23-year-old to be fine.

“Bukayo would have been close, but it would have been unfair to take a risk with him,” Carsley said ahead of their win over Finland. “He’s a positive person and I expect him to be fine.”

While Saka is expected to be available for Bournemouth, Gabriel Martinelli’s injury fears on international duty with Brazil have sparked further concern over Arteta’s wide options, and it is believed Arsenal think Takehiro Tomiyasu could be back on the treatment table.

Adding fuel to the fire, club captain and chief creator Martin Odegaard remains weeks away from a comeback, with Arsenal’s strength in depth brought into debate as a result.

Arsenal "planning" to sign Saka alternative in 2025

While Saka’s injury isn’t thought to be serious, it has sparked internal discussions over whether they should bring in a back up/rotation option. That is according to well-connected former chief scout Mick Brown, who has told Football Insider that Arsenal are “planning” to sign an alternative to Saka as well as other key players.

I’m sure they’re already looking to strengthen in that position,” said Brown.

“I’ve heard the Arsenal hierarchy have held discussions about what happens if certain players get injured, and that includes Saka. They want to get to a point where they have a solid backup for every player in their starting XI. Long-term, they’ll be planning to strengthen in every position.

“But that applies to Saka certainly, because a winger who’s always looking to take people on is always likely to get a whack and pick up a knock. This latest blow isn’t so serious, they hope, but with the way he plays, he’ll always pick up these little issues.

“He may always be available at the moment, but I know the club are planning for what happens if that isn’t the case any longer.“

Interestingly, Arsenal are believed to be targeting Antoine Semenyo for this role, following his impressive start to the campaign with Bournemouth.

Mitchell Starc joins Alyssa Healy in Brisbane quarantine amid Covid schedule challenges

Starc will have done four weeks quarantine out of the last five and faces more after the T20 World Cup

Andrew McGlashan03-Sep-2021Alyssa Healy has been joined in Brisbane quarantine by husband Mitchell Starc amid the challenges posed by their competing schedules in the Covid era, the difficulty of travel and the need for players to be bubbles.Healy is among 12 Australia players from New South Wales and Victoria in the squad to face India who are undergoing 14 days of hard quarantine alongside the visitors in Brisbane ahead of the internationals which have been moved entirely to Queensland.Starc, who recently completed quarantine after returning from the tours of West Indies and Bangladesh, has joined her so the they are able to see each other before he departs for the T20 World Cup meaning four weeks out of five will have been in quarantine.Even in normal times the schedules for Healy and Starc mean they spend long spells apart – there was a five-month period during 2019 where they spent 10 days together – but the added complications of the Covid era, and the challenges of entering respectively team bubbles, have exasperated the issue. After the India series Healy will be involved in the WBBL which may yet require a form of bubble while Starc, after another two weeks quarantine following the World Cup, will head straight into the Test squad which will also likely have some element of restrictions around it.”It’s a scary thing at the moment with the way the world is, it’s incredibly challenging to travel as freely as before and to bridge into hubs is very difficult,” Healy told ESPNcricinfo. “There’s going to be a lot of sacrifices being made to ensure we can see one and other as much as we can.Related

Australia's twin ambitions of T20 World Cup and Ashes create selection juggling act

Hard quarantine set to challenge preparation for India and Australia

Mooney: Pink-ball Test poses a different challenge to what we're used to

“Mitch has made one and come into quarantine with me in Brisbane so he’s doing pretty much four weeks in a five-week period. They are the sort of decisions we’ll have to make moving forward. Our summer is incredibly busy for both the men’s and women’s sides so we’ve blocked that out as a no-go but we take it as it comes.”We are really lucky that CA are incredibly supportive of both our careers and our personal life and are willing to make decisions to allow us to see one and other. We are incredibly grateful on that behalf but it is a little bit sad that we get to miss some big experiences for each other.”Healy, speaking to promote a podcast series by ASICS called Sound Mind, Sound Body Stories, conceded that the impact of Covid may shorten international careers if restrictions and the difficulty of travel remain long-term issues.”Covid has probably thrown a few new challenges at athletes right round the global and how they manage themselves, coming in and out of quarantine, spending a lot of time at home. So the mental challenge has been a real one and being able to manage yourself – physically we are all really good – but learning new ways to be able to manage mentally to stay fresh and motivated has been a real challenge.Alyssa Healy will head from the series against India into the WBBL•Getty Images

“I’d be lying if I said it’s not going to shorten careers. I definitely think it will, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to be an elite athlete and have a family or some sort of normal life at the minute, so people will probably make decisions earlier than they probably would, that’s just being honest.”Healy also acknowledged that seeing sportspeople traveling around while such movement is much more difficult for the general public can be controversial, but cited the recent examples of the Olympic and Paralympic games for the positive impact sport can have in these times.”People want to see loved ones so managing that has been really tricky as well when there’s backlash about athletes travelling around the globe, but we are just trying to do our job like everyone else is,” she said.”Players are continually proving we are willing to go above and beyond to get series and tournaments away. From a playing perspective people just want to do their job and hopefully put some smiles on people’s faces.”I know how much the Olympics and Paralympics has meant to New South Wales and Victoria in lockdown and us in quarantine. The fact we love sport so much in this country, hopefully we can put some smiles on faces during this series.”The India and Australia players doing the hard quarantine will have a week to prepare once it’s completed on September 13 with Healy admitting there it will be a tough lead-up to the multi-format series.”It will be tricky, the bowlers have had to get creative in their rooms, hopefully not making holes in doors or walls, to keep the body ticking over,” she said. “Probably the same for me being a wicketkeeper, that first session back, getting into that deep squat will be a tough, but everyone is doing what they can to get the series off the ground and we are grateful for the India team to be doing the same.”Sound Mind, Sound Body Stories powered by ASICS is available across all major podcasting platforms and the ASICS Australia website
