New South Wales close contact rules won't stop SCG Test

The third Test in Melbourne continued despite cases in the wider England squad

The New South Wales Government has declared they will do all they can to ensure the SCG’s Ashes Test goes ahead, guaranteeing players won’t be sidelined for a week as close contacts.Cricket Australia were able to breathe a sigh of relief on Tuesday, when all players from Australia and England returned negative PCR tests to COVID-19.That has at least in the short-term put pay to fears of a large outbreak in the England camp, after four non-playing members of their touring party tested positive to the virus. But bigger questions still await Cricket Australia. There had been fears that NSW’s close contact rules would force players into a week of isolation if they were near an infected person in a state that is averaging more than 6000 cases a day. That, in effect, had the potential to immediately kill off the Test if several players were close contacts and asked to isolate for a week under previous rules. However NSW Health’s claims on Tuesday mean that players would be treated the same as they were in Melbourne, and able to play on if they were close contacts.Likewise, NSW health minister Brad Hazzard promised that the Test would be able to go on with minimal issues if a player or further support staff contracted the virus.”The SCG Test is sacred, an important date at the start of the third year of our life with Covid-19,” Hazzard said. “I want to assure the cricket loving public, under our rules any players with exposure to a known case of Covid-19 would be asked to test and isolate only until a negative result was received.”If there are any cases within the teams, their support staff, or families, we will work with the people involved to ensure they are safe, and there is as little disruption to others as possible.”Cricket Australia are also confident they will be able to work with the Tasmanian government to ensure the fifth Test in Hobart goes ahead.Tasmania has had minimal cases of the virus and the threat of players and broadcasters becoming close contacts in Sydney could be an issue. However Tasmania’s willingness to host their first Ashes Test is key, after the state government helped fund a big-money bid to secure the match.Meanwhile the incubation period of Covid-19 means officials still have a nervous wait ahead in coming days to ensure the virus doesn’t spread further in England’s camp.No players had reported any symptoms before their PCR tests on Monday night, and play was able to start uninterrupted on day three in Melbourne.”Players from the Australian and England teams all had PCR Covid-19 Tests after play yesterday and all results have come back negative,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.”The families of both sets of players also had PCR tests yesterday and all returned a negative test. The England team’s support staff and their family members who tested positive after PCR tests yesterday are in isolation.”Australia have so far managed to get almost all matches played on home soil since the start of Covid-19 through its protocols.Only one Test has been postponed – against Afghanistan last summer. A one-day series against New Zealand was also called off when the pandemic first surfaced mid-series.Otherwise the BBL, WBBL and women’s internationals have got through unscathed, with crowds able to attend all major events bar the first closed-door sports event in Australia with an ODI against New Zealand in March 2020.”We’ve seen through the last 18 months [we can get games on],” CA boss Nick Hockley said. “I have to say I am so proud of the work of everybody involved, in particular thank the players but also the governments and health departments across the country. We’re having to learn to live with this.”

Stones 2.0: Everton blew £23m on flop who earned 2x more than Branthwaite

The more optimistic Everton supporters will claim that Sean Dyche’s system and the club’s success still sit in the melting pot, though the cynics within the broad Toffees camp might point toward a middle-grounded future at best.

Everton have lost one of their past seven Premier League matches after starting the season with four defeats on the trot, but performances have routinely lacked colour and inspiration.

Everton players react including Beto

Dyche, at least, has upheld comparatively decent defensive numbers, with the 17 goals conceded from 11 matches so far the second-best from any side in the bottom seven, and the same total as ninth-placed Aston Villa’s.

The gruff-talking manager’s very appointment was built on the pledge that he would give rise to a restored defensive pedigree.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Everton, whose future remains frustratingly nebulous and excitingly uncertain in juxtaposition, have long prided themselves on solidity, preservation in the top flight. Defensive pedigree runs blue through the veins of the Merseyside-sat club.

Everton's defensive pedigree

Say what you want about Everton’s chequered fortunes on the field across the past however many years, but you can’t deny that Goodison Park has fostered some immense defensive talent.

In August 2016, Manchester City completed the £47.5m signing of John Stones, who had been at Goodison Park since he was 18 and became the second-most expensive defender ever, at that point in time.

Previously, Joleon Lescott had changed to a lighter blue hue in joining City back in 2009 for £22m, taking the newly-moneyed outfit to £120m as they rose to indomitable power.

Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka are both iconic names at Everton, distinguished and experienced defenders, while Jarrad Branthwaite looks like the latest prodigy to have been birthed in Finch Farm, arguably the star of Dyche’s squad.

It hasn’t always gone to plan at the rear, though, especially when Stones moved to Manchester. The loss of such a talented player demanded a high-class replacement, but Ashley Williams was anything but.

Everton had a howler with Ashley Williams

Williams, who is now retired and 40 years old, enjoyed a successful Premier League career that found its brightest days with Swansea City, who the Welshman captained and was hailed as “truly one of Swansea City’s greatest players” by Alan Curtis.

Having led the Swans from League One to the Premier League, competing across five top-flight campaigns, Everton felt that they were signing an experienced and commanding head, but he fell heavily by the wayside.

Journalist Ben Marlow’s assessment bore echoes of the general consensus: “Thought he would be great for us but turned out to be a total liability. Awful defender.”

Former Everton defender Ashley Williams

Perhaps a tad harsh, but then emotions cloud impartiality when one’s club is concerned, struggling because of the strife of the player. Williams featured 73 times for Everton but indeed failed to inspire the kind of confidence that was ever-present in Wales.

In fairness, he featured prominently after signing for Everton in a deal worth £12m. It was August 2016, and the 31-year-old was indeed lined up to be the perfect Stones heir. Out with the new, in with the old. It was a risk, even for great financial gain.

His first term as a Toffee was decent enough. Williams started 35 Premier League matches as Everton finished seventh under the wing of Ronald Koeman, and though he remarkably averaged 7.9 clearances per game, the one-time Wales international also made three mistakes and only won 52% of his ground duels, which hardly speaks of defensive superiority.

The regression was fast and furious. Williams was relegated to a more bit-part role in 2017/18, starting 20 league fixtures but making even more errors (five, to be precise) and winning 48% of his ground battles.

His final Premier League campaign with Swansea, by the way, saw him command a 65% success rate.

It clearly didn’t have the desired effect, and given that Williams took home £70k per week during his time at Goodison Park, it wasn’t exactly cheap either. That’s a salary packet that, even now, stood as two times what Branthwaite earns while playing for Dyche’s team, with the sinew-framed star on a £35k-per-week pay packet.

Branthwaite, it almost need not be said, is the club’s finest young centre-back since Stones burst onto the scene. The 22-year-old carries the trappings of a world-class titan and will see his team recoup a mammoth sum if he is indeed to be sold in the year ahead.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Concerning Williams – Stoke City swept in and signed the veteran on a season-long loan move in 2018, and it is unclear whether the Potters provided Everton with a portion of his wages, or whether it was the Toffees who leaked money as the veteran plied his trade elsewhere.

Let’s imagine Everton did in fact cover the breadth of Williams’ £3.6m-per-year salary. In conjunction with the £12m transfer fee, this would mean that the Merseysiders suffered financial damages totalling almost £23m for a player who proved to be a disastrous Stones heir.

One to forget about, eh. Williams led a storied career below the clamour of those at the Premier League’s highest echelon; he remains a beloved figure in his homeland and proved to be a strong and inspiring figure for much of his career.

Unfortunately, it didn’t come together at Everton, and considering the £23m that was taken from Everton’s resources, almost half of the fee collected from the decorated Stones’ sale, it’s one that should have been avoided.

Everton must regret selling star who's now worth £45m & outscoring Salah

Everton appear to have offloaded the talent way too prematurely.

Analisamos apenas a proposta financeira naquele momento.

Darren Lehmann has resigned from his role as men’s head coach of Northern Superchargers, the Hundred team based at Headingley.Lehmann, the former Yorkshire and Australia batter, has started to step back from his coaching commitments since suffering a heart attack on his 50th birthday in early 2020. He stepped down as head coach of Brisbane Heat ahead of the ongoing BBL season, moving to a role as assistant, and has now left the Superchargers ahead of the 2022 edition of the Hundred.”It’s with a heavy heart that I have taken the decision to step down as men’s head coach at the Superchargers,” Lehmann said in a statement. “As for many people, the continuing uncertainty around Covid-19, quarantining and restrictions begins to play a part in your decisions.”I loved my time with the Superchargers. Last season, despite all the challenges of Covid, was up there with one of my coaching highlights.”The UK public got behind the new competition and I see it going from strength to strength. The window for player retentions opened on December 1, and teams have been negotiating with players and their representatives over the last six weeks.

The next Maresca: Leicester want "driven" coach as the dream Cooper upgrade

Change is afoot for Premier League strugglers Leicester City. They announced their decision to sack manager Steve Cooper on Sunday afternoon after a poor start to the season, with the club just 12 games into the new top-flight campaign.

They are certainly in danger of being dragged into the relegation zone at this stage of the season. The Midlands club are 16th in the table, having won just two games and lost six thus far. One of the most worrying things is their goal difference, which currently stands at minus eight.

The search is on for a new boss at the King Power Stadium, and they have recently been linked with one manager who is coming off the back of a good interim stint.

Leicester target Dutch manager

The manager in question here is Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former Dutch striker recently enjoyed a stint as interim boss at Manchester United following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, although he was not kept on as a coach under Ruben Amorim.

Now, according to Football Insider, the former Red Devils centre-forward has emerged as a target at the King Power Stadium. He is viewed as ‘the wildcard candidate’ for the Foxes, but is someone ‘on the managerial shortlist’ of the club.

He is not the only out-of-work boss in consideration for the vacant Leicester role. Former West Ham United and Everton manager David Moyes is one name who has cropped up, as is ex-Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

Why Van Nistelrooy would be a good appointment

Leicester learnt exactly what Van Nistelrooy is capable of as a manager. During his short but sweet time in the hot seat at Old Trafford, the Foxes were on the wrong end of two of his three wins as United’s interim. They suffered a 5-2 drubbing in the Carabao Cup and a 3-0 loss in the league.

He also coached United to a 2-0 win in the Europa League against Greek side PAOK and earned a point in the Premier League at home against Chelsea. The Dutchman certainly made a good impression during his short time as a manager in English football.

However, his pedigree as a manager extends further than those four games. He has previously managed PSV Eindhoven in his native Netherlands and was fantastic during his time at the Philips Stadion.

The 48-year-old oversaw 50 games during his time at PSV and played some entertaining football. He picked up 38 wins and scored an impressive 127 goals. He also coached the club to Dutch Cup success in his only season in charge, beating Ajax 4-3 to lift the trophy.

Comparisons between Van Nistelrooy and former Foxes boss Enzo Maresca can certainly be drawn. The Italian, who is now head coach at Chelsea, helped the former Premier League champions to promotion last season, winning the Championship in emphatic fashion. He won 36 out of 53 matches in all competitions to give Leicester fans a memorable season.

Interestingly, the duo both began their non-playing careers as assistant coaches, with Van Nistelrooy working with the Netherlands national team and Maresca at Ascoli, Sevilla and then West Ham. They then coached at youth level, with Van Nistelrooy taking charge of the PSV academy sides and the Chelsea boss coaching at Manchester City.

Both managers were also assistants at one of the Manchester clubs, Van Nistelrooy, of course, on the Red half via PSV and Maresca on the Blue side. The similarities are clear to see and are incredible coincidences.

Bringing in the former United interim, who Ten Hag described as “very driven”, might be worth a shot for the Foxes. Backing an inexperienced manager has worked in the past, and it could be the key to surviving this season.
