Emotional Wellington marks 'pretty special' Australia comeback with tribute to idol Warne

She has been out of the national frame after a bright international debut, and is gung-ho about making the latest chance count

A ripping legbreak to Tammy Beaumont in the 2017 Ashes made Amanda-Jade Wellington an instant cricketing sensation. It was the final day of the first day-night Test in the women’s game and Wellington, then 20, hit the top of Beaumont’s off stump with a delivery that drew comparisons with Shane Warne’s Ball of The Century.Nearly five years later, after playing only her first match for Australia since March 2018 – during the World Cup match against Pakistan on Tuesday – Wellington found herself jogging her memory back to the time her path last crossed with Warne’s, as she reflected on his sudden passing.Related

Australia have worked very hard to earn favourites' tag

“Back in the Hundred [last year], he came out to watch a practice match, which was really special to me,” Wellington said after Australia’s seven-wicket victory in Mount Maunganui. “To actually get Warnie to witness me bowling was quite special. Every time I think of him now, I just quite tear up. It’s quite emotional, because I look up to him so much.”I didn’t get to work with him. I wish I did. But it [his impact on me] was just more so [through] watching his highlights, watching him bowl. Every spinner looks up to him and he’s someone you want to be, so I think he had a real contribution to every spinner’s game and especially my game as well.”Wellington had documented her emotions after Warne’s death in the form of a video she posted on her YouTube channel just hours after Warne’s death.”I still remember the first time I got compared to Shane Warne,” she said. “It was Big Bash 01. I think I was bowling against Perth Scorchers and ended up getting a three-fer. And then [commentator] Adam Gilchrist compared me to Shane Warne while the men were playing. He said, ‘This is Shane Warne finesse’ as well. He just said it reminded him of Shane Warne.”Wellington relived the disbelief that took over her when her 2017 Ashes stunner to Beaumont became part of cricketing lore.”I still remember growing up watching him [Warne], watching his highlights clips… Even to this day, I still watch his highlights on YouTube,” she said. “And then in the 2017 Ashes for the women, bowling that ball that gets compared to his ball of the century is… And then to get voted the No. 1 Ashes memory as well – like, it’s bizarre, it’s honestly bizarre.”Wellington had remained on the fringes of the national team since 2018, and when she returned to the XI, a second wristspinner – Alana King – was in it, and both legspinners impressed in something of a timely tribute to Warne.”To play two legspinners in a game is quite special,” she said. “For me and King to be so different, it works out really well from both ends, working in great partnerships. It was so different; we could be so attacking. Hopefully, it comes again.”Following a bright start to her international career – she took a wicket with her first ball in Australia colours, in November 2016 – Wellington’s performances went down, and the emergence of Georgia Wareham then saw her drop down in Australia’s legspinning pecking order.Wellington claimed Tammy Beaumont as her maiden Test wicket•Getty Images

More recently, despite a breakout season at the Hundred and a memorable campaign with Adelaide Strikers at the WBBL, including a record 5 for 8 in the Eliminator, she was pipped by King to a spot in the Ashes squad. But Wellington stayed in the selectors’ scheme of things. That meant when a foot injury ruled left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux out of the 2022 ODI World Cup, Wellington was handed a second shot at representing Australia.”I got a phone call, and the night before [the game] from [head coach] Matthew Mott, the bearer of good news, which was nice,” Wellington said. “Luckily, I am a room-mate with Tahlia McGrath. She had heard the good news, so was so excited for me. [I] quickly rang mum and dad. They were so excited. I think they watched the whole game as well with my partner. So, just emotions falling through the body… and yeah, just a lot of nerves.”Wellington came into the attack in the 13th over of the match against Pakistan, and it only took Wellington five balls to make an impact. With a deftly flighted delivery, she drew No. 6 Nida Dar, a former WBBL opponent, forward and had her edge to first-slip Meg Lanning for her 16th ODI wicket. Bowling across two spells of four overs each, Wellington finished with 1 for 25.”I sort of felt at home once again,” she said. “Getting on the field, nerves went away, and then as soon Meg gave me the ball, the nerves came back. And then once I got through the first over, I think I was pretty good,” she said. “It was pretty special. It’s funny – before the game, I had a lot of nerves coming to the ground. Obviously, it’s been three years since I’ve put on the Australian jersey before. Just a lot of nerves, a lot of excitement, and [I’m] just really excited to be part of the team once again.”

He’s outperforming Palmer: Chelsea must rue offloading star now worth £42m

Chelsea have made an excellent start to life under Enzo Maresca in recent months, with the Italian exceeding all expectations after his appointment from Leicester City during the off-season.

The 44-year-old has guided the Blues to third place in the Premier League after the opening 12 matches, sitting just a point off Manchester City, who have claimed the title four years in a row.

As for their Europa Conference League campaign, the club sit top of the new-look group stage, winning all four of their outings – remaining as the only one of two sides left in the competition with a 100% record.

Maresca has impressed supporters with his ability to lead the club in the right direction after numerous years of disappointing performances on the pitch under various managers.

However, he has owner Todd Boehly to thank for his recent success, given the American’s huge financial backing over the last few years at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s transfer window during the summer of 2023

Chelsea’s transfer window in the summer of 2023 will forever be one of the most iconic in English football’s modern history, with countless big-money additions arriving whilst also making a fortune in departures.

Moises Caicedo celebrates for Chelsea

Moises Caicedo arrived in a £115m deal from fellow top-flight club Brighton, breaking the record for the most expensive departure in the history of English football.

However, despite the bonkers fee, he’s been a pivotal player since his arrival, producing countless pieces of magic, including his outrageous long-range effort against Bournemouth last season.

Christopher Nkunku was another arrival that window, costing the Blues a huge £52m after triggering the release clause in his contract at RB Leipzig.

He may have missed the majority of his first season in West London with injury, but he’s made a huge impact so far in 2024/25, scoring 11 times in all competitions – making him the highest scorer in the first-team squad to date.

Such additions were made possible by the ability to offload other first-team players, including Kai Havertz, who departed to join London rivals Arsenal in a £65m transfer.

However, it was the sale of one star that window that the hierarchy may live to regret given the nature of his fee and his performance levels since departing the Bridge.

The player who Chelsea sold and is now outperforming Palmer

Cole Palmer has been a phenomenal addition for Chelsea, joining for £40m from rivals Manchester City during the same window as Caicedo and Nkunku.

Cole Palmer for Chelsea

The 22-year-old has registered 52 goal contributions in his 59 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, ending the previous league season with the most combined goals and assists of any player.

However, in the early stages of the 2024/25 season, he’s been outperformed by former Blues star Christian Pulisic, who left in a £20m deal to join Italian side AC Milan.

The move has allowed for a fresh start for the USA international, taking his game to the next level during the opening months of the new season – subsequently leading to a huge jump in market value.

Pulisic has registered 13 combined goals and assists in Serie A and the Champions League in 2024/25, one more than Palmer who’s only been able to notch 12, despite four of them coming in one outing against Brighton.

As a result of the Milan ace’s form, his market value has more than doubled since leaving London, now being valued at £42m as per Transfermarkt.

The 26-year-old, who’s been dubbed “unbelievable” by coach Dan McCarthy, has put his career back on track after a stuttering stint in England where he scored just 26 times in 145 appearances – struggling to fill the boots left by Eden Hazard.

However, it’s excellent to see him finally reaching the potential that saw the club fork out the huge fee they paid for him, finally making the impact in Europe many expected him to.

It’s undoubtedly frustrating that the Blues fans have to watch the 26-year-old tearing it up away from their club after offloading him on the cheap, with his talents handing Maresca that added threat in attacking areas had they kept hold of the American.

Paris and Hardie trigger Victoria collapse to put WA on top

WA quicks claim three wickets each as Victoria lose 7 for 73 after Handscomb and Perry half-centuries

Three wickets apiece to Aaron Hardie and Joel Paris sparked a massive Victoria collapse to hand Western Australia the ascendency on the third day of the Sheffield Shield final at the WACA.Victoria lost 7 for 73 to be all out for 306 after cruising to 3 for 233 just before lunch, butchering an opportunity to claim the bonus point lead after 100 overs and give themselves the chance to claim the Shield title in the event of a drawn match.Hardie prized out Peter Handscomb for a well-made 80 on the stroke of lunch and then Paris nicked off Nic Maddinson and Jonathan Merlo after the break. Mitchell Perry’s excellent innings as nightwatchman ended on 74 as Victoria lost their last four wickets for 16 runs in the last 20 balls of the innings to hand WA an 80-run first-innings lead and a chance to bat Victoria out of the game. The one solace for Victoria was that there were still seven sessions left in the game to force a result. Scott Boland took two valuable wickets in the last session, while Matthew Short picked up Shaun Marsh for the second time in the match, as WA could only push the lead to 171 with seven wickets in hand with two days to play. Sam Whiteman stood firm at the close on 45 not out.Victoria only have themselves to blame for not taking the bonus point lead. The team with the most bonus points accrued across the first 100 overs of the first batting innings of both teams will win the Shield in the event of a drawn final. Points are awarded for both batting and bowling, with 0.01 points given for every run scored beyond 200 in the first 100 overs and 0.1 points given for every wicket taken in the same period.Starting the day at 3 for 147 after 58 overs, Handscomb and Perry had batted through the first 27 overs of the third morning without trouble, compiling a 91-run unbroken stand. But they only scored 27 runs in the last 10 overs before the second new ball. After 85 overs, with one over before lunch, Victoria were 3 for 233 needing to score just 45 runs more off 15 overs without loss to claim the bonus point lead. The only risk was that every lost wicket added 10 runs to the total required to surpass WA.Handscomb, who had looked untroubled, played a rare false stroke, driving at a half-volley that was there to hit. Some late shape and a short stride forward saw him nick it to the keeper on the stroke of lunch.Peter Handscomb fell just before lunch for 80•Getty Images

Maddinson came out with clear intent after the break smacking five boundaries in 11 balls to ease any tension in the Victoria rooms. But like Handscomb, he was caught on the crease to a very full ball from Paris and drove down the wrong line to nick it to first slip. That left nightwatchman Perry, who had reached his maiden first-class half-century but had slowed his scoring on 57 from 127 balls, and Merlo, in his fifth Shield match, to try and score 36 runs off 54 balls without loss. But the pair faced 23 consecutive dot balls against Paris and Matthew Kelly who both locked in a disciplined line and length. Merlo struck two boundaries off Paris to get the equation back to 28 off 30.Kelly delivered another maiden to Perry, who had faced 24 balls without scoring since the end of the 88th over. As well as Perry had played having been sent in to protect Maddinson the night before, his inability to score at the critical moment proved very costly.WA nearly brought themselves undone having removed some slips briefly to set up further reinforcement in the ring. Perry nicked Kelly waist-high through a vacant first slip for four to leave Victoria needing 20 off 12. There was no mistake next over with Paris delivering a beauty from around the wicket to Merlo. He was drawn to play on the angle as it just straightened a touch to catch the outside edge.It left Victoria needing 30 off 11 and they fell 24 runs short, with WA claiming 1.67 bonus points to Victoria’s 1.44. Victoria’s tail fell away. Sam Harper was trapped plumb in front shuffling across to a yorker-length delivery from Lance Morris. Perry progressed nicely to 74 having looked like an assured top-order player thanks to a series of superb cut shots, some sound drives and a solid forward defence. But the express pace of Morris and a cleverly placed leg slip brought about his demise as he leg-glanced straight to Paris.Offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli picked up the last two as Will Sutherland and Jon Holland holed out trying to add quick runs with Victoria bowled out right on tea.Boland set about keeping Victoria in the game with the ball, bagging first-innings centurion Cameron Bancroft with the third ball of WA’s second innings. Bancroft poked at a good length ball wide of off stump without the sharp footwork of the first innings to be caught behind for 0. Boland, Perry and Sutherland caused WA’s top order no end of problems as the ball seamed and bounced consistently with scoring becoming more and more difficult as the afternoon wore on.Handscomb pulled a rabbit out of a hat after drinks bringing Short on to Marsh after the part-time offspinner had claimed the veteran in the first innings. Short made it two in two as Marsh meekly nicked a tossed up offbreak to slip first ball after drinks. Hilton Cartwright was tied down scoring just 12 off 50 balls before Boland found his outside edge with another superb delivery that angled in and nipped away to catch the edge.Whiteman was solid throughout taking his opportunities when they were presented while defending and leaving superbly. He guided WA to stumps alongside 17-year-old Teague Wyllie.

Everton on red alert as French club now open to selling £21m January target

Everton are on red alert as a player they tried and failed to sign in the summer has now become available in January, according to reports.

Everton transfer news

Everton’s Premier League campaign has been disappointing. Despite beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 last time out, the Toffees still have only 14 points from their opening 14 fixtures and sit precariously in 15th place, just five points clear of the relegation zone.

As such, manager Sean Dyche is expected to prioritise reinforcements during the January transfer window as he looks to revitalise the squad.

Everton interested in signing "dangerous" striker with 31 goals last season

The forward is thinking about leaving his club this January.

2 ByDominic Lund Dec 10, 2024

Among the potential targets is Fenerbahce winger Oguz Aydin, who Everton recently sent scouts to watch, as well as Botafogo forward Igor Jesus. The 22-year-old, who has netted eight goals in 30 appearances for the Brazilian club since switching from UAE Pro League club Shabab Al Ahli earlier this year, is viewed as a possible replacement for the outbound Beto.

The Portuguese striker has struggled for form and minutes at Goodison Park since moving from Udinese last summer and now appears poised for a return to Serie A, with discussions underway with Torino over a £16.5 million deal.

Ernest Nuamah now available

Another player on Everton’s radar is Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah. The 21-year-old had agreed terms to move to Goodison Park in the summer, but the deal stalled, and he ended up staying put in France after a move to Fulham also fell through.

According to Foot Mercato, however, the Toffees remain keen on the 21-year-old, and Lyon are now ready to let him leave for the right offer. Lyon are currently in a financial crisis and will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the season if they do not improve their situation. They have also been banned from signing players in January, so to balance their books, the seven-time French champions are likely to have to sell several players after the New Year.

Foot Mercato claims Nuamah is one of them, and would be allowed to leave the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in the event of an offer somewhere in the region of the £20.6 million they paid RWD Molenbeek for him in 2024, although that number could well be whittled down given their situation.

Nuamah is a Ghana international who has been capped 12 times by the Black Stars, scoring three goals. In the past, he’s received praise from the likes of Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan, who called him the country’s “next big thing,” and former Lyon and Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien.

Meanwhile, Nuamah’s former FC Nordsjaelland coach, Flemming Pedersen, once said of him: “Ernest is first and foremost a dribbler. He is incredibly fast, has a huge acceleration, and good agility. He is primarily left-footed, but can also use the right. He is a great individualist with tremendous power, who has great potential to also become a skilled team player.”

Not just Scales: Rodgers must drop 6/10 man to unleash big Celtic "threat"

Celtic will be looking to move further up the Champions League standings this evening as they prepare to travel to Croatia to take on Dinamo Zagreb away from Glasgow.

The Hoops are currently 20th in the league phase and are four points ahead of the bottom 12, which would see them knocked out of the competition, with three matches left to play.

They are up against a Dinamo side that is on seven points, one fewer than Celtic, and could provide a tough challenge for Brendan Rodgers’ side tonight.

The Scottish giants have enjoyed a strong start to the season in the Champions League, with one defeat in five matches, and they held Club Brugge to a 1-1 draw last time out in the competition.

Celtic’s last game, however, was in the Scottish Premiership and ended with a 3-0 win over Hibernian at Parkhead to extend their lead at the top of the table.

The Hoops are now nine points clear at the top of the Premiership after goals from Arne Engels, an own goal from Joe Newell, and Kyogo Furuhashi secured all three points against Hibs.

Despite the comfortable scoreline for the hosts, Rodgers could look to make some changes to his starting line-up, starting with an alteration in defence.

Why Liam Scales should be dropped

Cameron Carter-Vickers was rested against Hibernian and that meant that two left-footed defenders in Liam Scales and Auston Trusty were selected from the start.

The former Tottenham Hotspur central defender’s presence was missed at the back for the Hoops as the away side created five ‘big chances’ in the match, despite only having 26% of the ball.

Thankfully, Kasper Schmeichel was on hand to make a stunning nine saves, seven of which were from shots from inside of the box, to keep the clean sheet and prevent some sloppy defending from Celtic from ruining the scoreline.

Hibernian found it far too easy to break in behind of Trusty and Scales, with the former often the one closest to putting any pressure on the forwards when they did get through.

Carter-Vickers and Trusty were the centre-backs picked for the League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen, which Celtic won 6-0, and the last two Champions League clashes – a win over RB Leipzig and a draw with Club Brugge, and Rodgers could drop Scales from the starting XI to bring that pairing back together.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Ireland international is not the only player who could be taken out of the line-up for tonight’s clash in Croatia, though, and not even the only Irishman.

Why Adam Idah should be dropped

The summer signing from Norwich City, Adam Idah, was selected to lead the line against Hibernian and he had an opportunity to show Rodgers that he can be the main number nine for the club.

He had scored three goals in his previous three Premiership matches for the club, with two goals against Hearts and one brilliant strike against Ross County in a 5-0 win for the Scottish giants.

Unfortunately, the Ireland international was unable to step up and showcase the best of his abilities to push for a regular spot in the starting XI, which is why he could be instantly dropped from the team for tonight’s match.

The 6 foot 3 marksman had two ‘big chances’ to find the back of the net against Hibernian but fluffed his lines both times, failing to beat the goalkeeper on both occasions.

As you can see in the table above, Idah missed two ‘big chances’ from three shots on goal on Saturday and lost the majority of his physical duels with opposition defenders.

He did, however, create one ‘big chance’ for his teammates but was not rewarded with an assist for his efforts. That does not make up for how wasteful the former Norwich man was with the opportunities that came his way in the box, though.

That is why Rodgers must ditch Idah, who was handed a 6/10 rating by 67HailHail, from the starting XI and bring Kyogo Furuhashi back into the side for this clash with Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

Why Kyogo Furuhashi should start

Whilst the Japan international has not had a perfect start to the season for the Scottish giants, the Celtic star produced a moment of magic with his goal off the bench on Saturday.

James Forrest threaded a ball through into the box and Kyogo expertly let the ball go between his legs before controlling on his right foot on the spin and dinking the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make it 3-0.

It was a sensational bit of skill and showcased the kind of invention that the experienced forward can bring at the top end of the pitch when he is at his best.

The 29-year-old attacker has not always been at his best this season, though, as the wasteful forward has missed a whopping 14 ‘big chances’ in ten starts in the Premiership, along with three in four starts in the Champions League.

Former Celtic head coach Ange Postecoglou once dubbed Kyogo a “threat” and that best sums up the striker, who constantly gets himself into good positions to score.

As you can see in the table above, he has racked up 2.36 xG in the four starts in the Champions League so far this season, but has only scored one goal.

Interestingly, he has never actually scored away from home in Europe, but the stats do showcase that the £19k-per-week dynamo has been getting himself into great positions in front of goal, and the final action has just let him down at times.

Kyogo has scored 81 goals in 153 appearances in all competitions and this suggests that the goals will come, as one did against Hibernian on Saturday, and that is why Rodgers should bring him into the starting XI after Idah’s struggles last time out.

Celtic struck gold with "outstanding" ace who's now similar to a £54m star

The Hoops only paid £4.5m to sign the impressive forward during Ange Postecoglou’s tenure.
