Club want "agile" £8m ace sold immediately as Nottingham Forest plot move

As Sporting CP show one attacking star the door this month, it’s Nottingham Forest who could take full advantage to seal a bargain £8m deal for Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nottingham Forest transfer news

With the Premier League into the January transfer window, it’s becoming clearer and clearer that Nottingham Forest haven’t simply endured a solid run of form but they are, in fact, well on course to qualify for the Champions League if not more. Those at the City Ground will be trying their best to keep their feet on the ground, but that becomes increasingly difficult the more that a title race is merely mentioned – and rightly so.

Espirito Santo’s side have been the side to watch this season and continue the trend of outsiders breaking into the so-called top six. Last season it was Aston Villa, the season before that it was Newcastle United. Now, in a throwback to some of the club’s most historic moments, it’s Nottingham Forest who are hoping to book a European tour.

The January transfer window could yet boost that pursuit too. Names such as Baris Alper Yilmaz have already been mentioned and now a former Premier League gem has seemingly entered Forest’s radar.

According to Record as relayed by Sport Witness, Nottingham Forest are now plotting a move to sign Marcus Edwards, who Sporting are looking to move on immediately this month following disciplinary issues.

The Portuguese side are reportedly so desperate to show the winger the door that they’re willing to accept an offer between €8-10m (£7-8m) rather than waiting on his hefty €60m (£51m) release clause this month.

Presenting Forest with quite the opportunity, those at the City Ground must consider whether to look past Edwards’ recent ill-discipline and hand him the chance to finally make his mark on the Premier League having left Tottenham Hotspur as a young player.

"Agile" Edwards is worth the risk

Disciplinary issues will be a concern for Forest, but Edwards is among the category of talents who are worth the risk and the belief that any such problems are a blip on an otherwise impressive track record. In need of a fresh start, the 26-year-old could quickly play his part in a stunning season for Nuno’s side and, in doing so, become one of the bargains of the window.

Described as “super agile” and a “creative winger” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Edwards was at his best for Sporting last season when he scored six goals and assisted another nine in all competitions. And whilst off-field problems have stood in his way of recreating that form in the current campaign, he still crucially has that quality in abundance.

As Forest push to create one of the biggest shocks in Premier League history, adding Edwards along the way for a bargain price certainly wouldn’t be a bad idea at the City Ground.

Former captain urges selectors to “play in-form players” and “not just go by reputation”

Utilise those players who are in form, don’t go by reputation alone, and prepare to make tough calls even if it happens to be someone of the stature of Virat Kohli: this is essentially Kapil Dev’s message to India’s selectors as they build towards this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.”Play in-form players when you have loads of options,” Kapil told ABP News. “You can’t just go by reputation, but you have to look for current form. You can be an established player but that doesn’t mean that you will be given chances even if you fail five games in a row.”Kapil was asked specifically if Kohli can fit into India’s current plans given his own lean run and how well Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda have performed in his absence.Kohli is coming off an underwhelming IPL where he managed just two half-centuries for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In all T20s in 2022, he has so far struck at 115 in the middle overs; Suryakumar, Hooda, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant have all scored at a faster clip in this period.”Yes, there will be a headache, but he will have to perform better,” Kapil said. “If world No. 2 Test bowler Ashwin can be dropped from Test side then your No. 1 batter can also be dropped.”I hope Kohli scores runs. And if there’s a [selection] challenge after that, it’s a big one. At the moment, Virat Kohli isn’t playing like the Kohli we know, the one that has made him a legend through his performances.”If he isn’t performing, you can’t continue to keep these boys [youngsters] out. I hope there’s a healthy fight for selection, the youngsters should look to outperform Kohli. But Kohli needs to think, ‘yes at one point I was a big player, but I need to play like that No. 1 player again’. That’s a problem for the team, it’s not a bad problem.”Related

Problem of plenty: How do India fit Virat Kohli in their T20I XI?

Kapil also wasn’t in favour of big players being left out time and again in the name of “rest.” He felt there should be merit in picking and dropping someone.”You can call it rest; you can call it dropped. Every person will have his views,” he said. “If you [selectors] haven’t picked him, you can say we’ve rested the big players because they aren’t performing.”Kohli has a lot of ability and talent. You hope such a player comes back. It’s not as if you completely leave him out. If he isn’t performing now, it’s fine [to leave him]. Youngsters are playing well. If you can keep Ashwin out, you can keep anyone out.”Meanwhile, Wasim Jaffer, the former India opener, felt the pressure to perform could yet bring out Kohli’s best, but he hoped the return of senior players shouldn’t come at the cost of India’s new batting approach of going big from the outset.”Hooda’s performance will put pressure on Virat Kohli when he comes back,” he said. “You’ve got a guy who has done so well, performed consistently in the IPL and the T20Is as well. The pressure might bring out the best of Virat Kohli.”The big guys who are missing, KL Rahul (after recovering from injury) and Virat, are going to come back. But India will be happy that they have got the guys to back them up. However, the approach needs to be similar. This is the brand of cricket they need to play if they want to dominate this format. This is something we would like to see from the main guys as well.”

Better than Ndiaye: 8/10 Everton star has made himself undroppable to Moyes

David Moyes has just masterminded a 3-2 victory for Everton over Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park, with goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye and an Archie Gray own goal.

Despite having just 36% possession in the game, Everton managed to generate 2.03 xG against Tottenham, compared to the 1.11 xG generated by Ange Postecoglou’s side.

This goes against the words of Darren Bent before the game, stating the Toffees had been “apprehensive in front of goal” this season.

Everton managed to create five big chances, effectively breaking the lines of Spurs’ press, going from back to front efficiently and getting their shots off (12 in the game), with one man in particular leading the charge.

Iliman Ndiaye's performance in numbers vs Spurs

Ndiaye has been Everton’s star man in attack this season, joining in the summer from Marseille for a fee of around £16.9m. In his time at the club so far, the 24-year-old has made 24 appearances, scoring six goals in his 1,949 minutes played.

Against Tottenham, Ndiaye played 81 minutes, managing 50 touches on the ball, taking two shots (one on target) and completing four out of his six dribble attempts in the game, often at the heart of Everton’s attacks, receiving the ball and carrying it out on the counter.

It was his mesmeric goal that proved to be the showstopping moment, dribbling forward with pace and then dancing around Radu Dragusin as though he wasn’t even there.

He also did his bit off the ball, winning seven of his 17 contested ground duels, winning one of his three contested aerial duels and making two tackles, showing the attackers’ willingness to work for his team both on and off the ball, in order to have an impact on the game.

Gueye was winning the ball back in midfield to great effect, kick-starting Everton’s counterattacks, winning his duel (75% on the ground) and looking to play quickly forwards, which explains the nature of his two assists in the game.

Whether it was the defensive groundwork, simplifying play (with a 95% passing accuracy) to keep possession, or speeding up the tempo by playing through the lines, Gueye was at the heart of everything positive Everton did, earning him an impressive 8/10 match rating from the Liverpool Echo who explained that he was ‘showing there is silk as well as steel to his game.’

The performances of both Ndiaye and Gueye, among others, have given Moyes a huge statement win, which could be a great starting point for Everton to begin climbing away from the relegation zone, now sitting 16th in the Premier League, with their next games against Brighton and Leicester City.

Leeds could repeat Roofe masterclass with move for "wonderful" EFL star

Time is running out for Leeds United to dip into the transfer market to bolster their squad before the January transfer window slams shut at the start of February.

The Whites have yet to make a splash this month but are not in any desperate need of reinforcements as they sit at the top of the Championship table as it stands.

A relatively comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Sunday ensured that they moved back to the summit, after Sheffield United had overtaken them on Saturday.

Goals from Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani, and Ao Tanaka secured all three points for the West Yorkshire outfit, whilst Illan Meslier kept a clean sheet between the sticks.

Instead of splashing the cash on a big name from the Premier League, or on an exciting player from abroad, Leeds could do a smaller piece of business and take a gamble on a domestic option.

The Whites have had success when dipping into the Football League to pick up promising young talent in the past, with Kemar Roofe one excellent example of them doing that.

Leeds United's Kemar Roofe masterclass

In the summer of 2016, Leeds swooped to sign Kemar Roofe from Oxford United in a deal that was reported to be worth around £3m after the centre-forward had caught the eye in League Two.

The English-born attacker had produced 17 goals and ten assists in 40 appearances in League Two during the 2015/16 campaign, which convinced the Whites to spend £3m on the young dynamo.

Former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.

Roofe was not an instant hit at Elland Road, though, as the former Oxford man only found the back of the net four times in 49 appearances in all competitions in his first season with the club.

The Leeds striker needed that year to settle into life in West Yorkshire and in the Championship, having played in League Two prior to that, and stepped his game up in the following two campaigns.

As you can see in the table above, Roofe made himself a reliable goal threat for the Whites in his second and third years at the club in the Championship, scoring 25 goals.

The Jamaica international only started 52 of those matches, almost averaging a goal every other start, and helped Leeds to make the semi-finals of the play-offs in the 2018/19 campaign under Bielsa.

Roofe’s form for Leeds attracted interest from elsewhere and Belgian giants Anderlecht swooped in to secure his services for a reported fee of up to £7m in the summer of 2019.

The West Yorkshire outfit, therefore, played a masterclass by snapping the striker up for £3m, as they got two terrific seasons out of him before cashing in for a profit of £4m.

Leeds could look to repeat the blinder they played with Roofe in the current January transfer window by raiding Oxford United for another one of their young talents.

Leeds interested in Oxford gem

Football Insider recently reported that Leeds are one of a number of teams interested in signing Tyler Goodrham from Gary Rowett’s side this month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claimed that the Whites, Swansea City, Sunderland, and Coventry City are all vying to secure a deal for the 21-year-old starlet to bolster their respective squads.

It states that all four teams are keeping tabs on the Oxford United star and are plotting late-window moves to snap up the attacking midfielder ahead of the second half of the season.

This means that Leeds may have to act fast if they want to secure his services this month because there is plenty of interest from other sides in the division.

Football Insider’s report did not, though, reveal how much money it would take to convince Oxford to part ways with their young starlet midway through the season.

Leeds must, now, make a move to win the race for Goodrham because the talented youngster could come in as a terrific long-term addition to Daniel Farke’s squad.

Why Leeds should sign Tyler Goodrham

Instead of signing a big name, like Buendia – for example, who can come in and be expected to make an immediate impact in the second half of the season, the Whites could sign the Oxford gem with a view to him being a key player for the German boss in the future.

At the age of 21, the Irish dynamo would come in as a young talent with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come.

He could spend the second half of this season as a squad player for Leeds and learn from the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Wilfried Gnonto, and Largie Ramazani, among others, to improve and hone his skills, as a winger or as an attacking midfielder.

The versatile forward, who can play centrally or out wide, has produced three goals and three assists in 25 appearances in the Championship so far this term, which means that he has shown promise in the final third without being a consistent threat.

Goodrham, who was hailed as a “wonderful” player by ex-boss Des Buckingham, made his breakthrough as a regular starter in League One last season and helped his side earn promotion up to the second tier.

As you can see in the table above, the young attacker contributed with 12 direct goal contributions in just 23 starts, which speaks to his potential to make a big impact in the final third when he is at his best.

Like they did with Roofe, Leeds may have to be patient with Goodrham and accept that he is unlikely to be a key star right away, given his decent, but unspectacular, return this season, but with the hope that he will follow in Roofe’s footsteps and grow into a valuable asset for the club in the future.
