The allrounder, who is unavailable for the T20Is against New Zealand, is playing for the Manchester Originals in the Hundred
ESPNcricinfo staff12-Aug-2022
Will Russell ever turn out for West Indies again?•BCCI
With two more high-profile T20 leagues coming up, top West Indian players are set to be in great demand, and the situation has all the makings of a fresh scrap between the players and the team management, and, by extension, the cricket board. It might have begun already. On Wednesday, Phil Simmons, the head coach of the West Indies men’s team, and Desmond Haynes, the lead selector, had expressed their disappointment at the lack of clarity over the unavailability of certain players, including Andre Russell.Related

West Indies need consistency and knowing how to play situations
“It hurts,” Simmons said. “There’s no other way to put it. But what can you do? I don’t think that I should be begging people to play for their countries. I think if you want to represent West Indies, you will make yourself available.”Russell has now offered a somewhat cryptic social-media response to these comments, putting up an Instagram post with a screenshot of ESPNcricinfo’s news piece with Simmons’ quote in the headline, and this comment: “I know this was coming but am gonna stay quiet!!!”Russell hasn’t turned out for West Indies since the 2021 T20 World Cup. He isn’t part of their squad for the ongoing three-match T20I series against New Zealand – Haynes said “he is unavailable because he hasn’t made himself available” – but is playing for the Manchester Originals in the Hundred. He was also part of the list of overseas players unveiled by the UAE’s ILT20, which begins in January next year.Sunil Narine is also at the Hundred. His last appearance for West Indies was in a T20I in August 2019. Evin Lewis and Oshane Thomas have not appeared for their fitness tests, according to Haynes, though Lewis has signed a deal with Jaffna Kings in the upcoming edition of the Lanka Premier League. Fabian Allen has pulled out for personal reasons.
Jason Holder, Obed McCoy, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Romario Shepherd and Jayden Seales, who have turned out regularly for West Indies in recent months, have all signed up for the South African T20 league, which will be played almost concurrently with the ILT20 next year. Apart from Russell and Narine, Allen, Lewis, Rovman Powell, Akeal Hosein, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran and Dwayne Bravo are on board for the ILT20.Due to all this, West Indies are far from getting their full crop of top T20I players together despite the T20 World Cup, which begins in Australia in mid-October, looming. It appears, now, that some sort of breaking point might have been reached. According to Haynes, the West Indies management will give more weightage to performances in CWI-run tournaments, like the upcoming CPL, for selection.”If there is a competition that is run by the West Indies (and) somebody is playing well, I think his name should really come up for selection,” Haynes said. “That performance is very important to us, and we didn’t say that we have picked the World Cup team yet, so all the games that are going to be played leading up to the World Cup, we must take into consideration.”Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine are playing in the Men’s Hundred right now•Getty Images for Surrey CCC
Russell and Narine, among others, are CPL regulars, so there is a chance that they might not be out of the fray for the T20 World Cup just yet.Speaking on his international future, Narine recently told ESPNcricinfo, “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on, which I don’t really want to get into, but I mean, everybody would love to represent their country. It’s a hard thing watching them knowing that you want to be part of it and you’re not part of it.”Things happen for a reason and hopefully in the future I’ll be wearing maroon again, but until then, I’d still love to play for Windies. We shall see when that opportunity comes, but there will never be a no for West Indies.”Russell has also in the past spoken about his desire to represent West Indies as much as possible, while at the same time seeming to prioritise franchise cricket over internationals. Late last year, for instance, he played for Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, but opted out of West Indies’ tour of Pakistan, which began just over a week later, for personal reasons.
Hasnain and Rauf picked up three early wickets but the target was too modest

Yes, it was another chasing side winning in Dubai, the venue now having seen 17 victories for chasing sides in the last 20 T20Is. But this time, Sri Lanka’s bowlers had arguably put the legwork in for the victory, before the second innings could even begin.Pakistan’s innings could never quite achieve lift-off, and when the middle overs came, Wanindu Hasaranga put in his first big performance of the tournament, taking 3 for 21. After his strikes, Pakistan’s horizons contracted substantially, despite the best efforts of Mohammad Nawaz, who seemed to be striking well in the 26 he made off 18, before he was run out. Eventually, Pakistan succumbed to 121.Sri Lanka were rattled by Pakistan’s pace in the powerplay, slipping to 29 for 3 at one stage. But so modest was the target, they could afford to take it slow. Pathum Nissanka anchored the chase, hitting an unbeaten 55 off 48. Thanks to less substantial but more aggressive innings from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka ambled home with 18 balls and five wickets to spare.Hasaranga’s googly dominates the middle overs Perhaps it is because Pakistan had not played Hasaranga since 2019 (he has been a much-improved bowler since then), that they appeared especially powerless against his primary weapon – the ball that turns into the right-hander. He conceded just six runs in his first two overs. When Babar Azam, who had moved to 30 off 28, finally came down the track and took a chance, he was beaten comprehensively – Hasaranga slipping a straighter one beneath his bat, and onto the wickets.Iftikhar Ahmed hit a six off the fourth ball of Hasaranga’s last over, but the bowler made a roaring comeback. Not only did he bowl Iftikhar with a googly, he also got Asif Ali out first ball as the batter attempted nothing more ambitious than a defensive shot, and still managed to play inside the line of a googly that clipped off stump. Pakistan were 91 for 6.Babar Azam was cleaned up for a 29-ball 30•AFP/Getty Images
Sri Lanka control the early overs That spell had been set up by Sri Lanka’s tight bowling in the powerplay. On a worn track, Sri Lanka conceded only a single boundary off the bat in the first five overs – seamers Pramod Madushan (on debut) and Dilshan Madushanka, largely keeping things tight, while fingerspinners Maheesh Theekshana and Dhananjaya de Silva also contributed decent overs. The sixth over went for 12 runs, but thanks in part to Hasaranga, Sri Lanka kept a tight lid on the scoring. In fact, from balls 5.5 to 14.3 (a stretch of 53 deliveries) Pakistan did not hit a boundary off the bat – five wides the only occasion on which the ball crossed the rope. This put huge pressure on the second half of the innings, and batters got out trying to hit big. Pakistan lost their last nine wickets for 58 runs.Hasnain and Rauf rip out three wickets Pakistan’s bowlers had an even better powerplay than Sri Lanka’s, thanks largely to Mohammad Hasnain and Haris Rauf who picked up three early wickets, and provided hope. Hasnain got one to bounce on Kusal Mendis second ball, the batter edging that to slip. Extra bounce also helped Rauf take Danushka Gunathilaka’s outside edge next over, with Mohammad Rizwan diving acrobatically to his right to pouch the chance.Hasnain could have had Dhananjaya in his next over had he held a tough return chance, but Rauf got him before long anyway, beating him for pace with a ball on the stumps, which de Silva mis-hit to mid-off.Nissanka and Co settle things That was as good as it got for Pakistan, though. Rajapaksa hit a couple of sixes off Usman Qadir early in the middle overs to get Sri Lanka well ahead of the required rate. Nissanka accumulated safely at the other end. They hit occasional boundaries, and though Rajapaksa got out with 42 still to get, they had 51 balls to get them in.Nissanka completed the seventh fifty of his T20I career and helped massage the chase home, with Hasaranga hitting the winning runs.

Leeds United are now preparing a new formal offer for a young forward who is keen on a move to Elland Road, according to a new report.
Leeds searching for goals in the transfer market
Leeds will aim to strengthen their position at the top of the Championship when they welcome Cardiff City to Elland Road on Saturday. Daniel Farke’s team, who recently played out a goalless draw against third-placed Burnley, currently hold a two-point lead at the summit.
Meanwhile, Cardiff, despite a recent upturn in form which has seen them go undefeated in seven, remain down in 18th.
Speaking to the press on Thursday ahead of the game, Leeds boss Farke said he expects the Bluebirds to pose a tough challenge.
“They will come with confidence and freedom given their good past couple of results,” he explained. “Cardiff play with intensity and are active. Really good team spirit so we have to move the ball really quick. We have to be on it.”

Farke also touched on Leeds’ transfer plans, suggesting that he’s in the market for a new striker before the window closes on Monday night.
“We also stay awake for the striker position if we are one injury away from being unable to use in a game,” said the German coach. “I look at Manchester City. If Haaland scores, they are successful. If not, they are not. Due to the situation, we will [consider options].”
Leeds to make second Archer bid
One striker Leeds reportedly have their eye on is Southampton’s Cameron Archer. Leeds have already had a loan bid for Archer turned down. However, according to TeamTALK, the Whites are expected to return with another offer in the near future.
The publication claims that the second bid will be a permanent one, which will be just over the £15 million Southampton paid Aston Villa for Archer in the summer. With the 23-year-old himself understood to be keen on moving to Elland Road, Leeds are hopeful of getting the deal over the line despite Saints’ insistence on not losing the player this month.
Archer came through the ranks at Aston Villa, but never made his mark at Villa Park and moved to Sheffield United in 2023 after loan spells with Solihull Moors, Preston North End, and Middlesbrough. He signed for Southampton in August, just three months after he rejoined Villa on a permanent transfer.
In December, former Saints boss Russell Martin heaped praise on the Englishman, who has scored two goals in 21 Premier League appearances this season.
“I think he’s been really good for us,” Martin said in a press conference. “In his short spell here, he’s been a real threat. He’s improving all the time. I really love him as a boy. I think he’s a brilliant signing for us. I think he’ll score a lot for us.”

– Me vejo muito seguro e regular.

Newcastle United will hand a key player the “highest contract” in the club’s history, according to an exciting claim from football finance expert Stefan Borson.
Newcastle prepare for Arsenal after quiet January
In the end, it was a January transfer window to forget at St James’ Park, with the Magpies not spending a single penny throughout the whole month, much to the chagrin of some fans.
There was a feeling that Newcastle needed reinforcements in some areas of the pitch, including centre-back, but the likes of Paul Mitchell and Eddie Howe were seemingly content enough with the squad, as well as having to adhere to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules at the same time.
Newcastle United managerEddieHowecelebrates after the match
It is now a case of the Magpies knuckling down and looking to enjoy a memorable second half to the season, not only looking to finish in the top four in the Premier League, but also winning the EFL Cup, although they may first have to get past Arsenal without Joelinton in the squad.
While new signings will clearly be looked at when the summer window arrives at the end of the campaign, there are also a host of current players who are indispensable figures and need to be tied down to new deals. Now, a promising update has emerged regarding one such figure.
Newcastle backed to hand "highest contract" to star
Speaking to Football Insider, Borson claimed that Newcastle will offer Alexander Isak a new contract that will smash their previous record deal, which is Bruno Guimaraes’ £8.32m-a-year contract.
“I am sure it will be the highest contract they have offered. The reason they have held onto their big players is because it would be very expensive to sign Guimaraes or Isak. There are very few teams that can play that game and compete for signings over £100million.
“I think Arsenal could do it if they really wanted to. If it wasn’t Arsenal, who is going to buy Isak and who can afford him? Basically nobody and I include basically everybody. Bayern Munich have got Harry Kane, PSG seem to be in a new world, where their acquisitions seem to be in that £70million range, so they are not going to pay £100million. Nobody in Italy can do it. Man City don’t need Isak as a priority. You always want quality players, but City won’t buy Isak, so there are no buyers.
“The bottom line is, there are not many places he can actually go. They will offer him a new contract. He’s already got quite a lot left on his contract, but he’s clearly one of the best players in the Premier League right now and I don’t see him going anywhere.”
Alexander Isak
Isak is Newcastle’s star player currently, enjoying an outstanding season that has seen him score 17 goals in 22 appearances in the Premier League. In this form, there arguably isn’t a better striker in Europe, and for Magpies supporters, losing him to another club in the summer doesn’t bear thinking about.
Isak clearly needs to see Newcastle as an ambitious side who can match his dreams in the coming years, and offering him such a lucrative contract would be a good place to start.

At 25, there is still an enormous amount to come from the £120,000-a-week Swede, and if the Magpies can retain him for the foreseeable future, he could be one of the greatest strikers in the club’s history.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has moved up one spot to become the No.1-ranked allrounder in T20Is – going past Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi – following his superb outing in the recent tri-series against New Zealand and Pakistan. While Bangladesh did not win a single match in the series, Shakib was the player in form for his team, scoring 154 in three matches at a strike-rate of 150.98. He made a 44-ball 70 in the match against New Zealand and followed up with a 42-ball 68 against Pakistan. He now has 266 rating points, 20 ahead of Nabi.Namibia’s JJ Smit broke into the top five allrounders while Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza entered the top ten following their impressive starts in the first round of the T20 World Cup. Smith moved four places up to fourth following his 1 for 16 – in addition to scoring 31* – and 2 for 24 against Sri Lanka and Netherlands respectively. Raza, who’s been in superb form lately, scored a 48-ball 82 and picked up one wicket against Ireland.Among the batters, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips jumped 13 spots to No. 10 after scoring 130 runs in four innings – including a 24-ball 60 – in the tri-series.In the bowling charts, Afghanistan offspinner Mujeeb ur Rahman moved up two places to fifth position, while South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj went one spot up to No. 8.Pakistan opener Mohammad Rizwan, on 861 rating points, further extended his lead at the top of the batting rankings after another consistent showing during the New Zealand tri-series, while India’s Suryakumar Yadav is behind him on 838 points.
