Smith, Starc, Zampa help Australia seal series with big win

Vince and Billings put up a fight for England but a total of 280 felt very competitive on a surface that was not easy for scoring

Steven Smith continued his prolific ODI form, Mitchell Starc gave a reminder of his first-over prowess and Adam Zampa scuttled England’s middle order as Australia wrapped up the series with a convincing 72-run victory in Sydney on Josh Hazlewood’s captaincy debut.Smith’s 94 from 114 balls was the major contribution in Australia’s innings alongside a fluent half-century from Marnus Labuschagne and a more hard-working effort from Mitchell Marsh. England never completely lost control with the ball, largely thanks to Adil Rashid’s three wickets, but a total of 280 felt very competitive on a surface that was not entirely easy for scoring. The target looked much more daunting after just five balls of England’s chase by which time Starc had two wickets to his name. Jason Roy’s struggles did not abate as he gloved down the leg side second ball then Starc produced rapid outswing to firstly beat Dawid Malan twice then take out the off stump with an unplayable delivery.Malan was looking to play to the leg side with an open face but having come off a fine century two days he had the right to feel positive and the ball shaped late and at pace to beat the edge. After Starc’s wicked delivery to remove Roy in Adelaide it was another strong response to his omission late in the T20 World Cup.When Phil Salt was cleaned up by Hazlewood for a counterpunching 23, England were 34 for 3 in the sixth over and in danger of falling away. However, in the latest example of their batting depth James Vince and Sam Billings, who took Ashton Agar for consecutive sixes, constructed excellent fifties in a fourth-wicket stand of 122 in 22 overs which put England back in a position where the target was attainable. But Vince swung across the line at Hazlewood for an umpire’s call lbw then the ever-consistent Zampa made the decisive breakthroughs in the middle order, including Billings for 71, as he claimed 3 for 0 in nine balls and England lost 7 for 52. This time, the batting depth was not enough.Mitchell Starc celebrates taking two in the first over•Getty Images

There had been a surprise before the game when Hazlewood appeared for the toss when Pat Cummins was rested one match into his captaincy tenure. It was a case of change all-round with Moeen Ali also leading England for the first time in ODIs as Jos Buttler took a well-deserved break.Smith and Labuschagne added 101 in 19 overs for the third wicket then Smith and Marsh put on 90 for the fifth after Rashid had knocked Australia back with two wickets in two balls.Smith was not as fluent as two days ago in Adelaide, after which he said it was the best he felt at the crease in six years, but moved into the 90s with a flick for six over backward square leg against Sam Curran. However, attempting to reach his century with another six he picked out long-off against Rashid in the 44th over.Australia’s openers had made a brisk start before Moeen struck with his second ball when David Warner swept to square leg. Travis Head followed three overs later when he fluffed a pull shot to midwicket against Chris Woakes to leave Australia 43 for 2.Labuschagne started positively when he skipped down the pitch to Moeen and lofted him over wide mid-on and generally scored more freely than Smith who struck his first boundary off his 14th ball but did not add another until his 65th when he clubbed David Willey over the leg side.Labuschagne went to a neat 47-ball fifty, which proved the most fluent batting of the innings, and was furious with himself when he toe-ended a sweep against Rashid which looped to mid-off. Rashid struck again next ball when Alex Carey played over the top of a sweep and Billings was very swift to remove the bails with Carey’s foot on the line. The hat-trick delivery was misdirected into Marsh’s pads and alongside Smith the pair rebuilt to give Australia a platform going into the final 10 overs but they were not able to fully capitalise.Marcus Stoinis couldn’t get going in a 14-ball 13 before missing a swing at Woakes and though Marsh, back in the side in place of the rested Cameron Green who had returned to Perth ahead of the Test summer, brought up a 58-ball half-century he couldn’t quite move through the gears. In the end, however, they had more than enough as Australia’s latest ODI captains claimed their first series.

Ranking the 10 best SPFL players, including 18 y/o star and 5 Celtic aces

The Scottish Premiership has been a tale of Celtic domination over the last decade or so, with the Hoops capitalising on the woes of their Old Firm rivals, Rangers, to brutal effect.

While it is those at Parkhead who have had the most to shout about of late, it would be wrong to suggest that they are the only reason for excitement in the division.

Indeed, there are a raft of other notable talents operating across the top-flight, with it easy for most to be overlooked due to the often intense scrutiny surrounding those in Glasgow.

The 12 most expensive signings in Scottish Premiership history

We have taken a look at the biggest transfers in the history of the Scottish top flight, so expect Celtic and Rangers to dominate.

2 ByRoss Kilvington Dec 31, 2024

We have taken a look at the best players in the Premiership right now, based on their ability and current form. The usual suspects appear, but there are a couple of surprises…

10 Will Ferry Dundee United

Jim Goodwin

Will Ferry joined Dundee United from Cheltenham last summer, and the left-back adapted well to Jim Goodwin’s tactical system, which saw the Arabs occupy the heady heights of third place at one stage.

This season, the defender created nine big chances, averaged 1.8 key passes and succeeded with 54% of his dribble attempts – impressive indeed. Keep this up, and the 24-year-old will attract attention from elsewhere.

9 Alistair Johnston Celtic

Alistair Johnston was one of the biggest improvers at Celtic this past season. The right-back featured in 32 of their league games, scoring four goals and grabbing 10 assists in the process – excellent numbers for a full-back.

The Canadian also created an impressive 15 big chances for Celtic while keeping 12 clean sheets and winning 55% of his duels. He is going from strength to strength under Rodgers.

8 Sam Dalby Dundee United

Sam Dalby

Sam Dalby joined Dundee United on a season-long loan deal last summer in a bid to improve their attacking options. He led the Premiership scoring charts until the final few months of the campaign, proving to be an excellent addition.

His contract at Wrexham expires this summer and Jim Goodwin will surely be keen on securing his services on a permanent deal ahead of next season.

Dalby turned up in the big games this term and clearly gave United’s attacking department the boost they needed, securing a place in next season’s Europa League qualifiers.

7 Hamza Igamane Rangers

Hamza Igamane

Hamza Igamane’s arrival at Rangers last summer raised plenty of eyebrows, especially given that he hadn’t played senior football outside of his home country, Morocco.

Since arriving, the striker has scored 16 goals for the Gers in all competitions, including four in the Europa League, which has led to a few clubs beginning to show some interest.

Domestically, he was also impressive, recording a hat-trick against Hibs at the start of the calendar year.

6 Lennon Miller Motherwell

Lennon Miller is arguably the finest young player in Scotland right now. Still a teenager, the midfielder has played over 75 competitive matches for the Steelmen.

Recording 12 goal contributions this term shows just how effective the youngster has been from the heart of the midfield. So impressive, in fact, that Udinese made a bid of around £2.5m for the 18-year-old in the winter window.

This was swiftly rejected – not surprising as Miller is probably worth a lot more than that given his performances.

5 Nicolas Kuhn Celtic

Celtic's Nicolas GerritKuhncelebrates scoring their third goal with Adam Idah

Nicolas Kuhn has enjoyed a wonderful season for Celtic. The German notched 21 goals and grabbed 15 assists under Rodgers, including a strike against Bayern Munich which so nearly helped send the Bhoys into the last 16 of the Champions League.

His presence on the right wing gave Celtic a new dimension going forward, and the wide-man caused plenty of havoc in the Premiership this term.

4 Vaclav Cerny Rangers

Before the season started, Philippe Clement knew that signing a top-class right-winger could make all the difference at Rangers. Last term, he had to rely on Scott Wright and Ross McCausland on that side of the pitch.

Vaclav Cerny has been a revelation for the Gers in that regard. In 52 games for the Ibrox side, the Czech sensation scored 18 goals and registered nine assists. 12 of those goals have come at Ibrox, where he clearly feels at home.

Meanwhile, six of his strikes came in Europe, proving that Cerny is exactly the type of player for the big occasions.

3 Arne Engels Celtic

Arne Engels cost Celtic a club-record fee of £11m last summer, but the Belgian midfielder has proved to be an inspiring signing.

He won his first caps for Belgium during his stint with Celtic, and has registered 23 goal contributions in all competitions since arriving at Parkhead.

He will only go from strength to strength, and could one day secure the club a significant profit.

2 Kasper Schmeichel Celtic

Many felt that replacing Joe Hart after his retirement last summer would be difficult. Step forward, Kasper Schmeichel.

The Dane has kept 24 clean sheets in 48 matches for Celtic, particularly impressing in the Champions League, helping the club reach the play-off round.

He is no spring chicken at 38 years of age, but there is plenty of life in the old dog yet.

1 Daizen Maeda Celtic

On current form, Daizen Maeda was certainly one of the players of the season.

He scored 33 times this term, while the Japanese star also scored against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their play-off clash in the Champions League.

His 10 domestic assists ensured he topped the domestic charts alongside teammate Alistair Johnston and Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin.

Overall, Maeda has scored 62 times for the club in 157 appearances since joining in the summer of 2021 under former manager Ange Postecoglou.

Rangers dud who lost the ball 30x could’ve just cost Clement his job

The league leaders had slipped up earlier in the day. The chance was there for Rangers to apply a semblance of pressure on their Old Firm rivals at the Premiership summit, closing the gap to ten points with 11 left to play. And yet…

And yet the gap remains at 13, with Celtic let off the hook following another dismal day at Ibrox for Philippe Clement’s men, with the Light Blues falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of sixth-placed St Mirren.

Second-half goals from Mikael Mandron and Toyosi Olusanya ultimately steered the Saints to a shock win on the road, with the hosts – who look set for fresh investment from 49ers enterprises – failing to create a single ‘big chance’, despite boasting 65% possession, as per Sofascore.

CEO Patrick Stewart only recently came out in support of that man Clement, but the knives will rightly be out once again for the under-fire Belgian, with the end looking nigh for the 50-year-old.

The former Club Brugge boss is rightly the main culprit amid the Gers’ woes in 2024/25, but he certainly wasn’t helped by his charges on Saturday afternoon, that’s for sure…

Clinton Nsiala's game in numbers vs St Mirren

The obvious place to start is, of course, with young Clinton Nsiala, with the 21-year-old summer signing – who arrived from AC Milan back in June – having endured a wretched outing at Ibrox.

Recently eased into the side by Clement after sitting out the first few months of the season, the promising centre-back may well find himself out of the starting lineup in the games to come, having been all at sea up against Stephen Robinson’s side.

Indeed, for the away side’s opener, Nsiala fell to the ground far too easily under minimal contact from Mandron, with the latter man subsequently racing through before firing past Jack Butland from the angle.

Nsiala’s stats vs St Mirren

90 minutes

67 touches

90% pass accuracy

2 key passes

2/5 ground duels won

1/1 aerial duels won

11x possession lost

0/2 dribbles completed

1/6 long balls completed

Stats via Sofascore

Having failed to deal with a bouncing ball on that occasion, it was almost a repeat scenario for the visitors’ second, with the struggling defender only managing to nod the ball into the path of Olusanya, who duly converted.

Yes, Nsiala did receive contact on both occasions, but the expectation is for a centre-back to be far stronger, with those errors proving so costly for Clement and co.

The key Rangers underperformer vs St Mirren

While it was a rough ride for Nsiala, it would be cruel to put the blame solely at his door, with there having been far more senior members of the Rangers squad who failed to deliver at Ibrox.

Among those who weren’t at the required level was long-serving captain, James Tavernier, with the experienced full-back having simply not been at the races once again.

The 33-year-old – who does boast four goals and ten assists this season – proved far too erratic in possession, having lost the ball on 30 occasions from his 103 touches.

Performance in Numbers

That may be viewed as the rampaging right-back seeking to create for his side, yet it makes for grim reading considering he only completed one of his ten attempted crosses, while failing to register a single key pass.

Off the ball too, the one-time Newcastle United man was also found wanting after winning just three out of eight duels, with it having overall been ‘an underwhelming performance’ from the skipper, as per the 4th Official.

An increasingly divisive figure among those of a Rangers persuasion, Tavernier is doing little to suggest he can lead this team out of such troubled waters, with Clement having now been repeatedly let down by such key figures.

As such, while the Gers boss looks increasingly more likely to be going the way of Michael Beale before him, there may be those wishing that Tavernier joins him in heading for the exit door this summer.

Clement too, if he does face the ace, may view his captain as among those chiefly responsible after such a wretched domestic campaign.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore, the English batter, has withdrawn from the Jaffna Kings line-up at the Lanka Premier League after reportedly feeling discomfort, believed to have stemmed from a concussion he had suffered earlier this year. Bangladesh batter Afif Hossain has been drafted in as his replacement.Kohler-Cadmore played in Kings’ first game of the tournament, but following a diving catch during the game, he had reported some dizziness. While he had subsequently felt okay, he has missed the Kings’ five subsequent games. Kohler-Cadmore had since indicated to the team management that he wanted to return home to England to undergo tests, after which the decision to release him was taken. He had originally suffered the concussion during the PSL at the start of the year when he was struck in the head while batting in the nets while with Peshawar Zalmi.”It’s nothing critical but the decision was taken as a precautionary measure,” Saranga Wijeratne, the Kings team manager, confirmed. His replacement, Afif, is available to take part immediately, starting with the game against Galle Gladiators on Sunday.Afif made his T20I debut in 2018 against Sri Lanka and has since scored 1003 runs in 55 innings in the format at a strike rate of 120.55. He is also handy with the ball, capable of chipping in with part-time offbreaks, though he is not often used with the ball by Bangladesh. He also has the unique distinction of being the youngest T20 debutant to pick up a five-wicket haul, at just 17 years and 72 days, when he took 5 for 21 for Rajshahi Kings against Chittagong Vikings in the BPL in December 2016.Kings are currently second on the LPL table with four wins from six games.

Man City now interested in "unbelievable" £50m star; he’s open to the move

Manchester City are now showing interest in an “unbelievable” Premier League player, who has a release clause of £50m, and there is a growing belief he would be open to the move, according to a report.

Man City planning defensive rebuild

It would be fair to say Man City have fallen way short of their lofty standards this season, and while Pep Guardiola moved swiftly to rectify his side’s issues in January, spending £181m on five new players, the manager is still keen to make more additions this summer.

Guardiola is particularly keen to strengthen at the back, having identified the need to sign a new goalkeeper to replace Ederson, with the likes of Espanyol’s Joan Garcia and FC Porto’s Diogo Costa being linked with moves to the Etihad Stadium.

A replacement may be needed for Kyle Walker, with the 34-year-old right-back being shipped out on loan to AC Milan last month, while Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso is being eyed on the opposite side of the defence.

Pep Guardiola may be forced into the market for a replacement.

BySean Markus Clifford Feb 24, 2025

The Sky Blues brought in Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis to bolster their centre-back options last month, although both players are still very young, with the former enduring some shaky performances since completing a move to England.

As such, Guardiola may be keen to bring in a proven Premier League centre-back this summer, and a report from GiveMeSport has revealed Man City are now showing an interest in AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen.

Wolverhampton Wanderers' Jean-Ricner Bellegarde in action with AFC Bournemouth's DeanHuijsen

At 19-years-old, Huijsen is also very young, but he has caught the eye with some impressive performances for the Cherries this season, with Liverpool and Chelsea also interested.

The defender has a £50m release clause in his Bournemouth contract, which means they may struggle to keep hold of him beyond the summer, and there is a growing belief he would be open to a summer move to the Etihad Stadium.

Huijsen could become a top centre-back

The Amsterdam-born defender has emerged as a key player for Bournemouth this season, making 20 appearances in the Premier League, and he has averaged a 7.27 SofaScore match rating, the second-highest in the squad.

Such is the youngster’s talent, he has been lauded as “unbelievable” by members of the media, and he ranks highly across a number of defensive metrics over the past year.

Although the Spaniard is still a teenager, his performances for Bournemouth this season indicate he could be capable of slotting straight into the Man City starting XI, and £50m is a reasonable fee, given the vast potential he possesses.

The fact Huijsen could be open to a move to the Etihad Stadium is a real bonus, and if he continues to perform at his current level between now and the end of the season, then City should definitely pursue a summer move.
