Three of Liverpool’s biggest stars are, at this stage, in line to leave the club in the summer. The Reds could lose Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold on free transfers, with their contracts set to expire at the end of the season.
Former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen, stated on talkSPORT a few days ago that he is “pretty sure” Salah wants to stay at Anfield, saying he “would do whatever it takes to keep him” at Anfield beyond this season. Quite.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah
As for Van Dijk, he explained in mid-March that he currently has “no idea at the moment” wheter he will stay at Anfield or not. However, one player who does seem destined to leave is Alexander-Arnold.
The latest news on Alexander-Arnold's future
If the reports that are breaking in the last 24 hours or so are to be believed, it does not seem like Alexander-Arnold does not have many months left as a Liverpool player. All signs point to a departure from his boyhood club.
Liverpool'sTrentAlexander-Arnoldapplauds fans after the match
One of the people reporting that the right-back could be on his way out of Anfield is the highly reputable David Ornstein. He reports that Real Madrid are ‘working to close’ the signing of the England international.
Ornstein goes on to explain that Los Blancos, one of the biggest clubs in world football, have been interested in signing him for two years, revealing they have been ‘doing everything’ they can since January to convince him to switch Merseyside for Madrid.
The boyhood Liverpool fan has currently played 349 games for the club, scoring 22 goals and grabbing an impressive 87 assists. His contributions to winning the club’s first Premier League and the Champions League in 2018/19 were vital.
If the right-back is to depart the club, it would mean the club need to replace him in the long-term. Rather than dipping into the transfer market, perhaps the answer lies in-house.
The in-house Alexander-Arnold replacement
There are actually a few options at Arne Slot’s disposal if he were to look for an in-house replacement for Alexander-Arnold. Namely, they are academy graduates Jarell Quansah and Conor Bradley.
Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley
However, the pair are rather inexperienced, and whilst Bradley might be the first choice a few years down the line, perhaps he is best suited to a more rotational role as he gains experience. Instead, Slot could use Joe Gomez as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold.
Once described as a “phenomenal” player by Statman Dave, the England international has featured 17 times under the new Liverpool boss this term but has been sidelined for some time now with a hamstring injury.
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez
Gomez, who was born in London, is no stranger to playing at right-back. In an impressive 241 appearances for the Reds so far, he has played on the ride side of the backline 88 times. Naturally, he is a centre-back, but the defender is certainly comfortable at full-back, too.
If there is one issue with Gomez slotting in at right-back, it is his attacking output. He has famously never scored a goal in professional football and only has nine assists for Liverpool, five of which have come from the right side. Over the years, he has proven he is capable of producing moments of magic, however, like this assist for Diogo Jota in 2022 against Watford.
Gomez’s true strength lies in his defending, meaning he’d be certain upgrade on Alexander-Arnold in that regard.
Indeed, the England international has some impressive numbers via FBref when compared to other full-backs, including 6.64 ball recoveries and a 73.9% aerial duel win rate per game. Both of those metrics rank him in the top 1% of full-backs in Europe.

Liverpool could certainly do a lot worse than the former Charlton youth product at right-back. Whilst the attacking side of his game is definitely not as good as his defensive ability, he has proven he can create goals, and defensively, he is very impressive.
As far as an in-house Alexander-Arnold replacement goes, Gomez could be the answer Slot is looking for, at least until Bradley is ready to start week in, week out.
A bigger star than Trent: Liverpool eyeing "one of the world's best CBs"
It may not be all doom and gloom for Liverpool amid Alexander-Arnold’s impending exit.

Ashton Turner will return to Durham for the T20 Blast after Tristan Stubbs’ call-up for South Africa A’s tour to Sri Lanka ruled him out of a planned stint in the north east.Turner captained Durham in 2022 but his time with the club was affected by a shoulder injury sustained on debut, and he made 124 runs in his eight appearances. He returns to the UK after a stellar home season in Australia, lifting both the Big Bash and the Marsh Cup as captain and also featuring in Western Australia’s successful Sheffield Shield season.”It is great news to have Ashton returning to Durham this season,” Marcus North, Durham’s director of cricket, said. “He joins us on the back of an outstanding season for Perth Scorchers and Western Australia, where his experience and leadership skills have once again been evident for all to see.”Related

For the first time in 10 years, they will go into a five-day game without a frontline spinner

Todd Murphy was left out of the XI after a tough go at it in Headingley•Getty Images
Australia will go into a Test without a frontline spinner for the first time in more than 10 years after Todd Murphy was omitted for Old Trafford where the visitors can retain the Ashes with a draw and clinch the series with a victory. The final selection call came down to Murphy or Cameron Green with the allrounder, who missed the Headingley Test with a minor hamstring injury, winning out. It will give Australia a very deep batting order with Alex Carey pencilled in at No. 8 and Pat Cummins at No. 10.There had been a squeeze on selection after Mitchell Marsh, who replaced Green in Leeds, scored a superb first-innings century but it remains very unusual for Australia to forgo their spinner. The last time Australia did not field a specialist spinner was against India in Perth in 2011-12, early in Nathan Lyon’s career before he became a fixture and went on to feature in 100 consecutive Tests until the series-ending calf injury he suffered at Lord’s.Related

How many bowlers have dismissed a father and a son in Tests?
Had Lyon been fit there would have been no question of leaving him out for this match, but the selectors have gone for a different route regarding the inexperienced Murphy who had a very limited role at Headingley, bowling just 9.3 overs.”Nathan Lyon is the greatest offspinner we’ve ever had so it’s not quite apples for apples,” Cummins said. “We are really excited by Todd, think he’s fantastic. Would have loved to use him a bit more last week, think conditions just favoured pace bowling.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
“We played a Test in Hobart last year in the Ashes where Nath didn’t bowl an over. It’s all conditions based, we are really excited by Todd, we think he’s a gun, we love having him around, he’s got a big future. It was more conditions or the way I used him, as opposed to how he bowled.”Lyon had played a key role in Australia’s win at Edgbaston, but the aggressive way England bat can mean less opportunity for a spinner to get into a match especially when conditions favour pace. They have only batted longer than 80 overs once in the series.Murphy’s omission will leave the bulk of any spin bowling Australia require in the hands of Travis Head, although Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne could also contribute. Head has become an increasingly useful option for Cummins with the past 12 months bringing all nine of his Test wickets at 17.55 although four of those came in very helpful conditions in Galle.”When Nath played he obviously hasn’t had to bowl much but still provides something a little bit different to Nath so have used him a little bit,” Cummins said. “Really confident [in him], he defends himself well, uses a bit of drift as much as spin and he’s quite clever. Lot a confidence in his bowling, and we’ve got Smithy and Marny who can bowl some leggies, too.”Moeen Ali, who has a good record at Old Trafford with 16 wickets at 18.50 from three Tests, argued that a frontline spinner was a must, but Australia have thought differently.”You have to play a spinner in a Test match no matter where it is, in my opinion, but Old Trafford especially,” he said. “I think the way they used him [Murphy], it was a difficult one, I think the chase was a difficult one because we would have preferred facing a spinner. [They] were missing Nathan Lyon, who has been a massive part of the team and does an amazing job for them.”
Joe Weatherley’s 63 from 39 gives Hampshire a chance before Simon Harmer seals shortened chase

Matt Critchley and Simon Harmer embrace as Hampshire’s Nathan Ellis sinks to his haunches•Getty Images
Essex squeezed past defending champions Hampshire to reach the Vitality T20 Blast final via a rain-affected chase at Edgbaston. Simon Harmer, who hit the winning runs when Essex lifted the title in 2019, again applied the this time around as he drilled Nathan Ellis into the stands at long-on to complete a five-wicket victory.Having restricted Hampshire to 170 for 7 from 20 overs, Essex were then handed a revised target of 115 from 12 overs, following an extended delay for rain shortly after the start of their innings. Although Hampshire made quick inroads after the resumption to reduce Essex to 50 for 4 after 6.2, the arrival of Australia allrounder Daniel Sams brought a vital injection of power as he and Matt Critchley added 45 in 22 balls.Sams could not finish the job, well held on the boundary by Ross Whiteley, but despite Liam Dawson only conceding seven off the penultimate over to leave 13 needed from the last, Ellis – the hero in Hampshire’s dramatic victory a year ago – was hit for two sixes in three balls to end hopes of a defence.Hampshire’s innings had been a stop-start affair, held together by Joe Weatherley’s 63 off 39 balls. Spinners Critchley and Harmer picked up combined figures of 3 for 55 from their eight overs but a spirited finish from Weatherley and Benny Howell helped get Hampshire up to a par score. The rain delay took eight overs out of the Essex innings and seemed to tip the balance back towards the chasing side, with the requirement now 96 off 55 and the ball skidding around on a greasy outfield. They threatened to squander the advantage by losing 3 for 3 in the space of six ball, but Sams smashed three sixes in an innings of 29 from 17 to put them back on course for only a second Blast final appearance.Essex come out on top of DLS equation Essex have based much of their approach to this year’s Blast on attacking come what may, so losing a wicket from the third ball of the innings would have been priced in. Adam Rossington’s flip off the hip went fine but Weatherley’s good day continued as he raced around the rope for a tumbling catch. But Essex’s start was scratchy as the clouds began to roll in, with Dan Lawrence dropped off a steepler by Dawson shortly before a heavy downpour took the players off for an hour with the score 19 for 1.The revised target left Essex needing to go at just above ten an over, and that had come down to 68 off 40 when James Fuller struck twice in the space of three balls: Michael Pepper caught at deep third off a wild hack and Lawrence edging a pull to the keeper. When Paul Walter was palpably lbw to John Turner in the next over, Essex were four down with the required rate climbing.”With wickets in hand and a smaller total, you would back yourself to get there,” Harmer said. “But in saying that when you lose wickets it’s tough to start again. You got to have your foot on the accelerator from ball one. So the way that guys like Critch and Dan Sams played, coming in there and striking from ball one was huge for us in the context of that chase.”Weatherley, meanwhile, described Hampshire as “bitterly disappointed” with the outcome. “With Duckworth-Lewis, it only takes is a couple of guys to hit a couple of sixes,” he said. “We still took wickets, if we hadn’t have done it would have looked a lot easier. It certainly feels unfair when they’ve got nine wickets in hand to get ten an over.”Hampshire start well, then stutter Aaron Beard’s only over, the first of the Hampshire innings, went for 14 as both Ben McDermott and James Vince opened their accounts by whipping leg-side deliveries to the fence. McDermott then picked off Sams’ first two balls, the second via a domineering stride down the pitch before launching over long-off. An edged four wide of the keeper and two more off Sam Cook – one scooped over the head of short fine leg – took McDermott to 29 off 11 but he fell to his next delivery, pulling Cook straight to deep square leg.Hampshire at that point were 39 for 1 after three overs but Vince departed in the next over, chipping Shane Snater to mid-off, and Essex got a hold on the scoring to make it 55 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. The spinners then kept Hampshire in check, with Tom Prest, Dawson and Fuller all falling for middling scores and only five boundaries coming between the seventh and 16th overs.Weatherley, Howell add finishing touch With wickets falling regularly, Weatherley had to take a circumspect approach, although he did hit one sweetly struck six down the ground off Harmer. Whiteley’s miscue off Walter left Hampshire 130 for 6 after 17, but the arrival of Howell added much-needed impetus at the death, as the seventh-wicket pair mirrored McDermott’s opening burst by lashing another 40 runs to the total. A wide full toss from Sams saw Weatherley bring up his fifty from from 34 balls, and the Hampshire No. 4 then spoiled an otherwise-decent penultimate over from Cook by going deep in his crease to slog-sweep a slower ball for six.Howell then helped plunder 14 off Sams’ closer, including a towering six over long-on the ball after being dropped by Snater, and although he was dismissed off the final delivery his 22 off 11 had given Hampshire something to bowl at. Thanks to the rain, however, and Sams late blows, it would not be quite enough.
