Mominul wants Bangladesh to take 'control of crunch moments'

Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani, meanwhile, feels they are in the contest, despite the hosts leading by 112 with six wickets remaining

The truncated third day’s play has set the Sylhet Test up between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe nicely. Only 44 overs were possible due to rain and bad light, but the hosts, who had started the day 25 runs behind the visitors, are 112 runs ahead by the end. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (60) and the in-form Jaker Ali (21) are unbeaten, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz to come in next. Thus, senior batter Mominul Haque, who followed up his first-innings half-century with 47 in the second, believes that Bangladesh are still capable of stretching the lead to 300, even as Zimbabwe quick Blessing Muzarabani feels the visitors are still very much in the contest.”We will be happy with a 300-run lead; if not, [then] 270 or 280,” Mominul said. “We will be in a better position if we can give them a 300-plus target. We have some capable tailenders like Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam, apart from the proper batters Shanto and Jaker Ali. We also have Miraz. They will have to bat calculatedly. We have to take control of the crunch moments tomorrow. That’s what is giving me confidence [of getting a big lead].”Related

Shanto's unbeaten half-century stretches Bangladesh's lead on rain-hit day

Muzarabani, who has taken three out of the four wickets to fall so far in Bangladesh’s second innings, is hoping to restrict Bangladesh’s lead on the fourth day.”Ideally, [we want to keep the lead] under 200 runs,” he said. “We shouldn’t, however, think about the runs. We should think about taking wickets. It won’t be easy getting those Bangladesh wickets. We have to show more discipline. We are definitely in the game. Test cricket is all about day after day. There’s more time left in the game. We have the belief that we are ahead. It was a tough day for us today. Bangladesh fought really hard. We will take it, though.”Muzarabani removed Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul with deliveries lifting from a good length. He has used the shorter length very well in the Test, getting rid of Shanto and Mehidy with that in the first innings. “That’s my strength – to bowl the hard length on the body,” he said. “I don’t think Bangladesh struggled against the short ball – [just that] it is my No. 1 skill.”Mominul, however, felt that neither him nor Mahmudul fell to “short balls”, but rather to “extra bounce”. He also said they should have been more responsible after getting set at the crease, as Mahmudul was dismissed for 33.”Neither Joy nor I got out to short balls. There’s a difference between extra bounce and the short ball,” Mominul said. “Joy got out to a ball that jumped from four or five meters. Muzarabani is 6″8′, so he gets extra bounce, which makes it difficult for the batter. We have to manage his bounce – that’s our responsibility.”Joy and I got out after getting set. I think those who get out after getting set are more culpable than someone who gets out below ten runs. They don’t have much to do. As a senior batter, it is not acceptable [for me personally] to bat a total of one session in a Test match. I think if I could bat two more sessions, the team would have been in a better place.”

Jayawardene: 'We lost the game when we had control of it'

Did Mumbai Indians miss a trick by handing the ball to Deepak Chahar, and not Hardik Pandya, for the all-important final over?

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-20253:53

Abhinav Mukund: ‘MI bowlers let the game drift a bit in the middle overs’

When the rain went away and Gujarat Titans (GT) needed 15 to win off six balls, Mumbai Indians (MI) had a few options to throw the ball to. Deepak Chahar had bowled just two. Hardik Pandya had bowled just one. The spinners Karn Sharma and Will Jacks had bowled just three between them. It had to be a quick bowler, so it was between Chahar and Hardik, and MI chose Chahar. Chahar was “our main bowler” at that point, Mahela Jayawardene, the MI head coach, said later by way of explanation, but Katey Martin was sure that “you always want your skipper to step up” in such situations. But MI seemed to have made that decision before the team walked out for that one over after the last rain delay, pushing the Tuesday game into Wednesday, that it would be Chahar. A four and a six were hit, a no-ball was bowled, and GT were home off the last ball in a seesawing contest.”Deepak did that job for us when Booms [Jasprit Bumrah] was not there [for the first few games of the season],” Jayawardene said at the post-match press conference after MI’s streak of wins ended at six. “He was good, our main bowler. It’s easier for you to ask me that question and for me to say, ‘yeah, maybe Hardik’. Had Hardik gone for three sixes, you might have asked me why you didn’t bowl Deepak. I don’t like to go to that.”Related

Hardik on MI's three no-balls: 'A crime in my eyes'

“Throughout the game, we made some good decisions with the ball when we had to attack. Deepak’s execution – a couple of balls he missed, they hit some good shots, we bowled a no-ball as well on top of that – and we still came down to the last ball.”It was not the decision; it was the execution. That’s where we lost the game. My thinking is we lost the game when we had control of it and that was disappointing.”On the question of why not Hardik, Martin, speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show, said, “He typically bowls the crucial over. And I understand that he went for a few earlier. But yeah, you always want your skipper to step up.” Hardik’s only over in the game had gone for 18 runs, with three wides and two no-balls.Martin and her co-panellist Abhinav Mukund agreed that MI had taken their foot off the pedal in the middle overs of GT’s chase.”I felt they just let the game drift a little bit in that middle phase,” Abhinav said. “Because they have a set plan – like how Gujarat Titans have a set plan with their top three – when it comes to their bowling, they like using Bumrah to the back end of the powerplay, then maybe one in the middle overs and then maybe one at the death, or maybe even two at the death.2:06

How crucial was Gill’s 43 from 46 balls?

“They were forced to change the plan because of Gujarat Titans. But if you see the number of runs that were leaked in between the Bumrah overs – so Bumrah went three and five, and then you had that sudden surge of 37 in three overs [six to eight]. And then another surge [28 runs in overs 13 and 14] before Bumrah did eventually come back on. So… I know, cheat code and all of that, but you’ve got to manage your other bowlers as well. They got lucky with Ashwani Kumar, 2 for 28 in four.”As it transpired, Bumrah and Trent Boult had to bowl out by the 17th over as MI went in search of wickets, leaving Chahar, a powerplay specialist normally, and Hardik as the main options for the last over after rain decided the chase to a 19-over affair. Ashwani played his part well, coming on as a concussion sub for Corbin Bosch and picking up two wickets and bowling economically. At many levels, it was Bumrah or bust for MI in the phase leading up to the death overs, and he didn’t disappoint. Over No. 15 was 1 for 6. Over No. 17 was 1 for 7. Shubman Gill and Shahrukh Khan gone. Bumrah did swing the game, and the DLS equation, MI’s way there. The Gill wicket was a beauty. And Shahrukh was probably just not up to the task.”That’s the thing with Bumrah, right, he has the extraordinary skill and capability to change his length based on the batter,” Abhinav said. “And he went slightly full, he missed the yorker – which I think he’s not too confident about even now, seven games after injury – and went for four. And then he decided, ‘Let me go back to lengths, let me cramp them because that’s what I did the first two overs of the spell to Shubman and Jos Buttler.’ So he went there again. And that’s the ball he nails time and again.”It wasn’t sensible from Shahrukh to keep going, but I have seen him do it multiple times to try and just boss the game. You don’t boss the best in the world, right?”2:04

‘Bumrah can make the best batters look silly’

Till he got out, Gill was playing an ODI-style innings, going at under a run a ball, but doing just what GT needed to stay ahead of the DLS par score in a game where batting was far from easy – it was swinging around more than halfway into the second innings.”The unbelievable part is that you can look so good and elegant as Gill has throughout the whole IPL, and the ball deviated a lot and nipped back in quite a bit, and he was literally nowhere,” Martin said of Bumrah knocking Gill over with one that nipped back in and zipped off the surface. “It was just all about his [Gill’s] hands trying to get the bat on the ball, there was concrete in his feet.”That’s what Bumrah does; he can make the best batters in the world look silly by just the intelligence in where he bowls, the extra pace, and the fire – he’s just got the fire in the belly for Mumbai to get the side across the line. And I think the back-up over from Trent Boult [the 16th, which took Sherfane Rutherford out] and then another wicket [Ashwani getting Rashid Khan]. Ashwani wasn’t even meant to be playing this game, he’d come in at the halfway mark as a concussion sub, and to be able to pick up a couple of wickets, economical too, I think the way Mumbai Indians bowled just shows they are never out of the game.”They weren’t. Till that last over. Poor decision? Poor execution? We’ll never know what might have happened if Hardik, more used to bowling in the death overs, had bowled instead of Chahar.

Injury updates on five Tottenham stars ahead of Tuesday trip to Bodo/Glimt

Dominic Solanke was again absent from training ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Norway to face Bodo/Glimt.

Solanke last played for Spurs on August 23 against Manchester City and, even though he recently returned to training after a troublesome ankle injury disrupted his pre-season, he was conspicuous by his absence on Monday morning in Enfield.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank played down concerns over Solanke’s fitness on Friday ahead of the visit of Wolves, but with the England forward not able to feature in open training before the club fly to Bodo for Tuesday’s Champions League clash, the squad are short of attacking options.

Paris St Germain loanee Randal Kolo Muani was also absence as he deals with a dead leg, but Ben Davies did take part in the session after a minor knee issue.

Summer recruit Kota Takai also featured after a plantar fascia problem in recent months and Yves Bissouma was back.

Crystal Palace now keen on "insane" £22m defender who pocketed Erling Haaland

Crystal Palace are keen on signing an “insane” centre-back who once pocketed Erling Haaland, with it now being revealed he wants to leave his club in 2026.

Parish reveals why Guehi's Liverpool move fell through

Palace were expected to sell Marc Guehi during the summer transfer window, given that it was their last chance to cash-in for a sizeable fee, but the move fell through on deadline day, with Steve Parish recently revealing why he didn’t sanction the move.

The chairman said: “I decided in the end that, based on the advice that I got and with what I think, that we would have a better season if we kept Marc.

“If we were fighting between the difference of 10th and 14th, if that was going to be the difference between keeping Marc and letting Marc go, then probably we would have said right, ‘We should take the money.”

Crystal Palace now rivalling Tottenham for £43m former Real Madrid defender

Palace have joined the race for a new centre-back, with Marc Guehi poised to leave on a free transfer next summer.

ByDominic Lund Oct 15, 2025

With their captain still on the books, however, the Eagles are showing signs they could be capable of pushing for a European spot this season, sitting sixth in the Premier League table, having lost just one of their opening seven matches.

However, Crystal Palace will be powerless to prevent the 25-year-old from leaving on a free transfer next summer, meaning bringing in a new centre-back will be one of the most important tasks, and they are keen on signing Inter Milan’s Yann Bisseck.

That is according to a report from SportsBild (via Sport Witness), which reveals the German wants to move when the January transfer window opens, amid concerns about losing his spot in the World Cup squad next summer.

The 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Inter this season, having failed to impress, which means the Italian club are open to sanctioning a departure for €20m to €25m (£17m – £22m).

"Commanding" Bisseck once pocketed Haaland

Despite struggling at Inter so far this season, the one-time Germany international could be a solid replacement for Guehi, having been lauded by Ben Mattinson last term, with the scout particularly impressed by his ball manipulation.

The Inter defender has also put in some top performances in the Champions League in the past, keeping Haaland quiet in a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium last season, during which the Norwegian was limited to just one shot on target and an xG of 0.33.

Bisseck is vastly experienced at the top level, having made 13 appearances for Inter en-route to their loss in the final last season, which suggests he could be a fantastic signing for Crystal Palace.

No Roach or Da Silva, but Hope and Campbell return for WI home Tests against Australia

There was no place for Kemar Roach in West Indies’ squad for the upcoming home Test series against Australia, although the hosts have strengthened their batting by bringing back Shai Hope and John Campbell. They have also given a maiden call-up to Brandon King and Kevlon Anderson, while the fast-bowling attack has a new face in Johann Layne. Anderson Phillip has been retained. The third and final Test of the series in Jamaica, which kicks off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle for both teams, will also be a day-night Test. It will be the third day-night Test in the West Indies and the second at Sabina Park.Roach played West Indies’ last Test, in Pakistan, where he picked up two wickets in a 120-run win that squared the series. Only four wickets fell to quick bowlers in that game in Multan. Roach was in decent form in the Test series in Bangladesh prior to that, picking up nine wickets in two games. He has since played in the first-class West Indies Championship for Barbados and, more recently, for Surrey in the County Championship.WI vs Australia schedule

June 25-29 – 1st Test in Barbados
July 3-7 – 2nd Test in Grenada
July 12-16 – 3rd Test in Jamaica (day-night)

“Despite being under consideration, veteran pacer Kemar Roach has not been included and has been duly informed,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) said about the 36-year-old in a press statement.Layne, a 21-year-old fast-bowling allrounder from Barbados, came into the 16-man squad after picking up 63 first-class wickets in 17 matches. Trinidad & Tobago’s Phillip last played Test cricket in December 2022, the last of his two appearances, but was in the squad in Pakistan and has a five-wicket haul in the ongoing unofficial Test for West Indies A against South Africa A in Gros Islet. The lead spinners in the side are captain Roston Chase and vice-captain Jomel Warrican, while Jayden Seales, Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph are the main quicks. The batting suggests a fresh start for the team after they finished one off the bottom – Pakistan were last – in the nine-team WTC 2023-25 table with three wins in 13 games.Campbell is back as an opening option after last playing a Test in June 2022, having served an anti-doping violation in the interim period. He was in good touch at the WI Championship to finish as Jamaica’s top-scorer – and seventh-highest overall – with 517 runs from 11 innings. Campbell and Anderson scored three centuries apiece in the competition.Anderson was one of the stars of the tournament, scoring 573 runs in 11 innings to finish as the third-highest run-getter overall, and Guyana’s best. King, a white-ball star who has turned out for West Indies in 52 ODIs and 63 T20Is so far, played four WI Championship games for Jamaica, scoring 242 runs in eight innings.Hope, an experienced Test-match player with 38 Test caps and a batting average of 41.85, last played a game in November-December 2021.Related

The changing game: Test matches get faster and shorter

Carty: 'I'm not just proud to be here, it's time to be impactful'

“I’m excited about the inclusion of young prospect Kevlon Anderson, who comes in after solid seasons in our domestic competitions to help provide stability in the top order, while the return of Shai Hope is welcomed given his consistency in white ball cricket.” head coach Daren Sammy said in a statement. “Brandon King’s inclusion fits a role we have identified that needs special focus to take our team to those closer to the top of the rankings.”We analysed what the top teams in the world are doing and what is needed for us to bridge the gap. We have identified a direction, along with the group of players and resources to give us the best advantage as we seek to take the team up ladder and challenge the best in the world.”Former captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach and Mikyle Louis make up the rest of the squad, adding heft and experience. Joshua Da Silva, Alick Athanaze, Amir Jangoo, Kavem Hodge, Gudakesh Motie and Kevin Sinclair are the players to have been dropped from the squad that played in Pakistan. Da Silva, the wicketkeeper-batter, has been ignored despite finishing the WI Championship as it’s second-highest scorer (583 runs in ten innings), while another senior cricketer, Jason Mohammed, was overlooked despite topping that table with 679 runs in ten innings, inclusive of four centuries. “The start of the [WTC cycle] is critical to building positive momentum as we strive to work our way up the rankings. Beginning with a strong showing against a team like Australia would be ideal in our quest to bring West Indies back to the helm of Test Cricket”, CWI director of cricket Miles Bascombe said. “It was imperative that we sought to put a squad together that was well equipped, in both and the batting and bowling departments, to manage the ebbs and flows of this format of the game, while possessing the ability to apply pressure in key phases, through disciplined, purposeful play.”Sammy, asking for patience from fans towards the players and the team, promised exciting cricket in the series.”I am truly looking forward to this series because we want to start off strongly and make our home turf a fortress during this cycle, while having our passionate and proud fans behind us,” he said. “The matches will be challenging but I believe in this core of players, and they are eager to wear the maroon and make our fans happy.”West Indies squad for Test series against AustraliaRoston Chase (capt), Jomel Warrican (vice-capt), Kevlon Anderson, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Mikyle Louis, Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales

Not just Harrison & Aaronson: Leeds star is now on borrowed time under Farke

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke will surely be incredibly frustrated by his side’s lack of quality in the final third after what happened at the end of the summer transfer window.

Speaking to Football Insider last month, journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that the German boss wanted two additions to the squad that never came to pass.

The reporter said: “There will be a hint of frustration for Daniel Farke – they missed out on some targets. They are still lacking a bit up front, Leeds and he fears for them on that front – not getting the deal done for Manor Solomon will be a blow to Farke and the Leeds fans, because he had such a great impact there on loan last season.

“They tried to sign Harry Wilson on deadline day from Fulham and weren’t able to get that deal over the line as well, so they were looking to add some creativity in the final third.”

Instead of landing Manor Solomon, who scored ten goals on loan at Elland Road last season, or Harry Wilson, the club were unable to land any additional attacking signings in the final days of the window.

That recruitment failure from those above Farke has left the manager in a position where Jack Harrison is starting in the Premier League, which is a tough position to be in.

Why Leeds need to move on from Jack Harrison

The English winger returned to Elland Road in the summer after spending the previous two seasons on loan with Everton, which meant that he did not take part in the club’s two Championship campaigns.

Harrison’s form with the Toffees did not suggest that he was likely to return to Thorp Arch to improve their options at the top end of the pitch, as he struggled badly last term.

In the 2024/25 campaign, the left-footed dud scored one from 3.52 xG and failed to provide any assists in 34 appearances and 24 starts in the Premier League, per Sofascore, which shows that he was incredibly ineffective in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Harrison has offered very little in possession on the pitch this season, with no goals and just one chance created in seven appearances in the Premier League.

The £90k-per-week flop’s form for Everton last season suggests that he is unlikely to improve much from this point, which is why the club should be looking to move on from him in the summer.

Farke wanted Wilson and Solomon at the end of the window, which suggests that he was not happy with his wide options, and it has been reported that the club will go back in for Wilson in January.

A move for the Fulham forward, who has scored seven Premier League goals since the start of last season (Sofascore), could leave Harrison surplus to requirements.

The English winger is not the only player in the squad who may be on borrowed time ahead of the January transfer window, though, as there are others who have struggled to adapt to the top-flight.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Brenden Aaronson is one and as as much as this may not be a popular thing to point out, there is a case to be made that central midfielder Ao Tanaka may not be suited to playing in the Premier League.

Why Ao Tanaka may be on borrowed time at Leeds

The Japan international was a star for the Whites when they won the Championship title last season, using his ability on the ball to dominate matches for Farke. After all, his manager described him as “unbelievable” for his performances.

He ranked within the top 7% of midfielders in the division for passes attempted per 90 (72.43) and for progressive passes per 90 (7.03), per FBref, which shows that he excelled in possession in the second tier.

The 27-year-old star also scored five goals from a central midfield position to help Leeds on their way to winning the tite with a staggering 100-point haul.

However, the step up to the Premier League has meant that Leeds have had to alter their style of play as they are unable to dominate matches with the ball as much as they were able to do in the Championship, which has been bad news for Tanaka.

Journalist Graham Smyth raised concerns over the midfielder’s physicality last month, saying: “My concern with Tanaka was physicality in the Premier League. He got run over a few times towards the end of the last season. I worried a little bit, against the most elite athletes in the Premier League.”

The central midfielder’s form in the top-flight so far this season backs up the reporter’s concerns, as he has struggled in his duels across his six appearances so far.

As you can see in the table above, Tanaka has only won more than 29% of his duels in one of his six outings in the Premier League this season for the Whites.

Per Sofascore, he has lost 76% of his duels in total, including 80% of his ground duels, and this shows that opposition players have found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical contests.

This may be why Farke has preferred a midfield trio of Ethan Ampadu, Sean Longstaff, and Anton Stach, as all three of them have won over 50% of their duels in the top-flight, per Sofascore.

Tanaka is a brilliant technician, as evidenced by his aforementioned form in the Championship, but the physical nature of a relegation battle in the Premier League seems to have rendered him ineffective in the middle of the park.

DCL upgrade: Farke must regret binning Leeds dud who was "like Archie Gray"

Leeds United must regret binning this striker who would be an upgrade on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

If these issues persist until January, there may be a decision to make on his short-term future at Elland Road in the next January transfer window.
