Leeds in danger of big Jean-Kevin Augustin blunder

Leeds’ front line has been one of the most perplexing in English football this season.

Despite at one stage possessing a £10m acquisition and an Arsenal forward learning from Ian Wright, the Whites still have the second-worst conversion rate in the entire of the Championship.

Patrick Bamford has had mixed success in front of goal, failing to score routine opportunities and also missing a penalty against QPR to scoring four in his opening five matches of the campaign.

However, too often he’s been lacking in front of goal. Even a period of ten fixtures without finding the net failed to see Nketiah get an opportunity. The loan addition of Jean-Kevin Augustin has failed to take Leeds to the next level either.

At one stage, it looked as though United’s inability to kill teams off would be their own worst enemy in the fight for promotion.

Though, after a 4-0 win over Hull last weekend, it appears as though Marcelo Bielsa’s men have their mojo back. It was a rare hammering from the Yorkshire outfit who are second in the table and five points clear of Fulham.

If there was ever a season where Leeds got promoted, surely this is it. Bielsa’s side have been well set all term but few fans need reminding of what happened towards the back end of last campaign.

United failed to win any of their final four matches and ultimately had to settle for a place in the playoffs.

The same could happen again this season but as things stand, the Whites will be back in the Premier League for the first time in 16 long hard years.

If that happens, Leeds are set to shell out €21m (£18.2m) on Augustin, according to one report. The Frenchman is only at Elland Road for a temporary stint but Victor Orta managed to negotiate an option to buy in the terms of the loan deal. Though, if Leeds get promoted, that option becomes a complete obligation and the club will be stuck with him.

It seems perplexing that Orta would agree such a heavy deal. Despite all of the TV money that would come from achieving top-flight status, spending that much on a player who doesn’t seem as though he’ll get a look in between now and the end of the season is strange.

In some senses, Leeds’ Director of Football hasn’t learned from the Nketiah situation. He didn’t start until the back end of 2019 in the league and the 20-year-old clearly didn’t suit Bielsa’s system. The same can be said of Augustin.

Call yourself a Leeds expert? How much did each of these January signings cost?

The Argentine has already started making excuses, suggesting he isn’t fit enough and indeed he’s now injured. The RB Leipzig forward arrived ready to make an impact – after all, this is a player who has scored in the Champions League.

But if he doesn’t suit Bielsa and he fails to make an impact at Elland Road now, it would be foolish to spend £18.2m on a player who the manager simply doesn’t appreciate.

Leeds will need to strengthen if they end up back in the Premier League, but Augustin has so far shown he’d be no upgrade, not even in the Championship.

Arsenal fans react to interest in Jonathan David

Arsenal may have to begin preparing for life without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the striker will enter the final year of his contract in the summer.

The 29-year-old has been key to the Gunners since joining, as his return of 61 goals in 96 games would suggest, and that has led the club to scout Gent striker Jonathan David, who is impressing with his prolific goalscoring rate in Belgium.

David has 23 goals and 10 assists in 39 games this term despite being only 20 years of age, and according to Goal he is high up on Arsenal’s list of potential replacements for Aubameyang.

Some supporters are questioning such decision-making, as it would be a risk to trust a young player with the responsibility of not only replacing the team’s highest goalscorer, but also the captain.

They have made their feelings known in the reactions below, sharing the view that David is not yet ready to replace someone of Aubameyang’s calibre.

On the other hand, it is believed that the striker could be purchased for £17.5m, which means he could prove to be a bargain in today’s market, and so the club could decide to sign him regardless of what happens with their skipper.

Judging by the comments from some supporters it would seem that such a move would be a popular one, as David has impressed with his goalscoring record.

He could flourish under Arteta, too, who has already got the best out of young players like Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, who have both impressed fans with recent performances.

Spurs’ Tanguy Ndombele gets hammered by Darren Bent

Darren Bent has hammered Tanguy Ndombele for his performances in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt, as reported by Football Insider.

What did he say?

The Frenchman has come under fire in recent times, with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Jamie Carragher particularly damning in their criticism. The current Spurs boss lambasted Ndombele for not giving the team enough, whilst the latter simply labelled the midfielder’s performance against Burnley a “disgrace”.

And now, former Spurs striker Bent has also not held back on the Frenchman, as he said: “I think he needs time to settle, but I have questioned what exactly is going on at Spurs, and what is going on with him? He doesn’t seem to be able to play back-to-back 90 minutes, and he doesn’t seem to last 90 minutes either. Is it an issue with his fitness, or is he not quite ready to play yet?

“Either way, for the amount of money they paid for him, you’ve got to be ready to go off the bat, straight away. He’s not. There’s clearly an underlying issue there, and I think that’s what Mourinho is alluding to by saying ‘we need him to up his levels’.

“When you pay that kind of fee for somebody, I was really, really excited to see what he can do. But for whatever reason, it’s just not worked out for him yet.”

Underwhelming

The 23-year-old has certainly been underwhelming since arriving from Lyon, as indicated by the fact that he has only completed the full 90 minutes in a game five times – the last of those was in December, during a 2-2 draw against bottom of the table Norwich City.

When looking at his in-game statistics in the Premier League, Ndombele doesn’t actually seem too bad: he averages 1.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.6 key passes and two dribbles per game, while also maintaining a pass success rate of 85.6%.

However, when actually watching him on the pitch, he looks pretty clearly off the pace and has struggled to truly make his mark on games – he has managed just two goals and four assists in 27 games.

It seems as though there is difficulty in pinpointing what exactly is going wrong for Ndombele, but it is clear that improvement needs to be made judging by the numerous negative responses to his displays.

Lukasz Fabianski posts training video

West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has posted a video of himself training on

With the Premier League currently suspended, the Poland international was doing some exercises at home as he was “trying to stay sharp”.

Last season’s Hammer of the Year has had a fairly tough campaign physically, as he has missed 13 league games through two separate injuries – having pulled up against both AFC Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

The 34-year-old may have had his fair share of pain this campaign, but there was a heartwarming addition to this training session, as he was joined by a young family member.

It offers a reminder that while people will be desperate for football to return, it is important for players to stay healthy and look after their loved ones.

The stopper also thought of the supporters, telling them to “take care of yourself” in the current tough conditions.

Everton fans are happy for Jonjoe Kenny to leave

Everton academy product Jonjoe Kenny has spent the entirety of the current season on loan at Schalke and it appears he may have played his last game for his parent club.

Indeed, according to a recent report from German media outlet Bild, Kenny has told his current teammates and bosses that he wants to stay with the Bundesliga outfit next season.

The 23-year-old has scored one goal and provided three assists in 23 appearances for David Wagner’s side, but it doesn’t seem that his performances haven’t made a huge impression on the Toffees faithful.

In response to reports, plenty of fans suggested that they’d have no qualms about his departure.

Given Djibril Sidibe is only at Goodison Park on a season-long loan and Seamus Coleman is now 31 years old, though, that tone is perhaps a touch surprising.

Whether Carlo Ancelotti will agree with the supporters remains to be seen but, if the Twitter reaction is anything to go by, there is unlikely to be much backlash if the Italian decides to cash in.

Here’s what the fans have had to say about Kenny…

Phil Hay issues Leeds injury update

Some of Leeds United’s players are still using the facilities at Thorp Arch despite the majority of the squad being forced to isolate at home, it has been revealed by Phil Hay in a recent column for The Athletic.

What’s he said?

Marcelo Bielsa’s table-topping side were one of the last Championship clubs to suspend training amidst the current situation hitting not just the country but the whole globe too.

The EFL have suspended all of their leagues indefinitely which means the west Yorkshire outfit are going to have to wait a lot longer for promotion and ending that 16-year wait for Premier League football.

This time off, as bad as it is for everybody, could bring a couple of positives to United as it will allow injured players enough time to recover in the hope they can still impact their season.

Speaking in The Athletic this week, Hay said:

Injury recovery

It means that three of Leeds’ current crop of players are having to break lockdown rules in order to enter Thorp Arch and get the treatment they need.

This includes long-term absentee Adam Forshaw, January loan signing Jean-Kevin Augustin and an unnamed player, who needs the use of a treadmill instead of running on a public road.

There will be many an argument made over who that could be ranging from Barry Douglas, who has spent a lot of the season out injured to Pablo Hernandez, who is at a ripe old age of 34 and will turn 35 next week.

Either way, it goes to show the risks the club are prepared to go through in order to ensure their players are ready for a return, whenever that may be.

Spurs’ David Brooks move could spell bad news for Lamela

As Tottenham fans will undoubtedly know, Erik Lamela was one of the big-money signings during the summer of 2013 when the north London side’s entire transfer window was dominated by the Gareth Bale saga.

Lamela became then Spurs manager, Andre Villas-Boas’ sixth signing of the summer, with reports claiming that the Argentine had arrived in a £25.7m deal.

Following Christian Eriksen’s departure earlier this year, Lamela is the final man standing from the group of players Villas-Boas brought to the club back in 2013.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

But if recent reports are to be true, then the winger could be staring down the barrel at the end of his career at Spurs.

According to The Sun, with Bournemouth bracing themselves for a summer revamp, the likes of Manchester United and Spurs “could rekindle their interest” in David Brooks – providing he regains his fitness after missing this entire season with an ankle injury.

Both Brooks and Lamela are very similar in terms of profile, with both naturally left-footed, and comfortable with coming off the right-flank, and even operating as a more central play-maker too.

But at 22, the £27m-rated Cherries ace has far more time on his side, and could be the kind of signing that provide Jose Mourinho’s team with a bit more spark and energy. Last season saw him net seven times and provide a further five assists for Eddie Howe’s men – a record comfortably better than what Lamela managed (six goals and three assists) despite undoubtedly playing in a better team.

Since Mourinho’s arrival, Lamela’s time in the first-team has been very sporadic, with a hamstring injury certainly not helping his cause either. But following his return, the 28-year-old has only completed the full 90 minutes in the Premier League just once, with only three starts in the top-flight to his name.

It’s clear he’s not the most important figure in Mourinho’s plans, and Brooks’ arrival would throw yet another spanner in the works for him.

It would be difficult to see how Lamela could conceivably remain a key part of the squad if Spurs pull off a move for the Bournemouth midfielder, and it’s exactly why it could finally put the nail in the coffin for the Villas-Boas spending nightmare of 2013.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to Victor Wanyama’s admission.

Man Utd fans react to links with Lazio’s Milinkovic-Savic

Whilst Jadon Sancho has been the main name being linked with a high-profile switch to Manchester United this summer, it appears Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also keen on strengthening the centre of his midfield.

Of course, the future of Paul Pogba remains up in the air, with the Red Devils star the subject of intense transfer speculation last year when he was linked with a potential move to either Real Madrid or Juventus.

Best of the Decade: Top scorers & creators – Can you name them?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Now, The Daily Mail claim United, along with fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Tottenham, are amongst the sides who have enquired about the availability of Lazio powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

The report suggests that the Serbia international “is looking for his next challenge and the chance to step up to one of Europe’s biggest clubs”, and that United could also face competition from the likes of PSG.

After hearing about the links to the midfielder, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their rumoured transfer target.

Some United fans seemed to be shaking their heads at the links with Milinkovic-Savic once again – a player who they have been previously touted with signing.

If Pogba does end up going, then Milinkovic-Savic would certainly represent a more than viable replacement for the former Juventus star.

He has built up considerable experience in his time with Lazio, and at just 25-years-old, is set to enter the prime of his career.

So whilst some United fans appear to be hesitant about making a move for him this summer, it may not be the worst signing to make.

Bellingham could be LFC’s next Wijnaldum

As Georginio Wijnaldum’s Liverpool contract continues to tick down, there have been a number of rumours relating to his potential replacement at Anfield.

One of the names in the rumour mill is current Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, with Eurosport suggesting that the Reds are tracking the former Birmingham City man.

He could certainly be the perfect replacement for Wijnaldum on Merseyside.

[snack-amp-story url=” https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news%2c-transfer-rumours-and-more-asensio-vlahovic-van-dijk-alberto-pedri” title=” Read the latest Liverpool news, transfer rumours and more… “]

Despite being just 17 years of age, the midfielder is already starring for BVB.

He has already made 39 appearances for Dortmund this season in all competitions since his summer move, scoring three goals and providing four assists. Bellingham certainly starred in his most recent outing by netting a fantastic strike against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

For comparison, the Dortmund man has already racked up more direct goal contributions than Wijnaldum this season, a surprising and remarkable feat considering that he is 13 years the current Liverpool midfielder’s junior.

It is not just in his output that Bellingham continues to come out on top though. According to WhoScored, he is averaging more shots per game, dribbles, tackles, interceptions and clearances than Wijnaldum. Once again, that is an extremely impressive level of performance from a player so young.

His displays have also been noticed in all quarters.

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has labelled the youngster as the “real deal”, whilst Owen Hargreaves has echoed those sentiments by stating that he is “special”.

Whilst it would take quite a fee to convince Dortmund to part with their exciting starlet, with him having two years left to run on his contract at the Signal Iduna Park and rated at £31.5m, he would certainly be worth investing in.

So if Liverpool do have to replace Wijnaldum this summer, Bellingham is the ready-made successor.
