[ad_pod ]Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Doncaster on Sunday ensured they progressed to the last eight of the FA Cup, with two of the most divisive Eagles players getting on the scoresheet to bag the victory for Roy Hodgson, who has guided a team into the quarter finals of the competition for just the third time in his long career in the dugout.Jeffrey Schlupp continued his fine scoring form this season with a marauding burst forward capped off by a strike into the bottom right corner while Max Meyer nodded in Andros Townsend’s clever, headed pass to give the visitors their goals before half-time.Schlupp’s regular inclusion in the starting XI has raised some eyebrows this season, particularly as Hodgson opts to tuck the Ghanaian into his midfield three when he has previously been utilised as a left-back or wide midfielder.

Meanwhile Meyer, a central-midfielder by trade, has largely been deployed on the wing as the Palace boss looks to replace the creative influence lacking since Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned to Chelsea in the summer.

It is entirely understandable why Palace fans are irritated by Hodgson’s insistence to play Schlupp over Meyer – the latter has made just 10 Premier League starts since signing on a free from Schalke in August 2018 Â- although, now, the former England boss’ critics may begin eating their words.

Schlupp’s goal at the weekend was his fifth of the season in all competitions – his tally is now level with that of WilfriedÂZaha – while his powerful drives at the defence have become typical of his game and are surely born of his instinct as a winger. The former Leicester man has proved difficult to deal with in his new role and his qualities make him comparable to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Liverpool.

The former England international was billed as a winger at Arsenal but Jurgen Klopp has converted him into a box-to-box, central midfielder and he was hugely influential in the Reds’ Champions League campaign in particular, scoring a fantastic solo goal against Manchester City on the way to the final.

Unlike the Merseyside outfit, though, pace is a commodity in the Eagles midfield and, while Schlupp is sometimes guilty of poor decision making and dodgy control, he is becoming irreplaceable at Selhurst Park.

While there is little doubt that Meyer would be a welcome addition to the starting XI on a regular basis – his passing and technical ability are unrivalled in the Palace ranks – there seems to be little room for the midfielder when Schlupp is performing the way he is.

Perhaps there is a way in for the number 7 if James McArthur continues to miss sitters – see the 1-1 draw with West Ham – but Palace look a little exposed when both Meyer and Schlupp play and Luka Milivojevic cannot be asked to anchor the midfield by himself. The Serbian is extremely consistent but his lack of pace means he is often forced into a tactical foul which will eventually cost both him and his team.

Hodgson’s perceived stubbornness in starting Schlupp ahead of Meyer may be met with outcry from the Palace faithful but, as long as the utility man continues to pop up with goals and add a different dimension to the midfield, their resistance will surely lessen as the season rolls on.

Crystal Palace progressed into the sixth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over League One outfit Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday, with first-half goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Meyer enough to see the Eagles through.

It was not for the want of trying for the hosts as they gave as good as they got in the 90 minutes although, ultimately, the Premier League side’s quality proved too much for Rovers in the end and so their Wembley hopes died.

After getting just one point from their league clash with West Ham last time out – which they arguably deserved to take more from – Roy Hodgson made six changes to his Palace side, with a different-looking backline and strike-force, while Wayne Hennessey returned between the sticks.

Luka Milivojevic kept his place in the starting XI and was the engine in the south London outfit’s uncharacteristically attacking midfield.

Hodgson rarely opts to start Meyer, and Schlupp’s four goals this season show he has a penchant for getting forward – usually workhorse James McArthur plays alongside Milivojevic but the Scotsman was benched – and so, with Doncaster largely dominating the tie, it was clear that Palace were missing some bite in midfield.

Captain Milivojevic was immense regardless and was deservedly voted man of the match for his efforts. Here’s how the Selhurst Park faithful reacted to the 27-year-old’s performance…

لقد فزت بعدة ألقاب هذا الموسم، هل جعل ذلك الأمر أكثر صعوبة لترك بايرن ميونخ، وترك بطل أوروبا الحالي؟

“حسنًا، كانت اللحظة مع بايرن ميونخ رائعة كانت أفضل لحظة رياضية بالنسبة لي هناك، طوال الوقت، طوال السنوات، التي كنا نتمنى بها تلك الكأس، ثم في العام الماضي، عندما قلت للاعبين سأرحل، أعتقد أنه كان بمثابة دفعة مني للفوز وقد فعلنا ذلك”.

أنت الآن هنا، أنت لاعب في ليفربول، كيف تعتقد أن أسلوبك في اللعب يمكن أن يكمل هذا الفريق؟

“أولاً، أعتقد بالتأكيد أنني يجب أن أتأقلم مع الفريق بأسرع ما يمكنني في الموقف والسياق الذي نعيشه الآن، كل شيء أكثر إحكاما وأعتقد أنه يتعين علينا مزج كل الأشياء الكبيرة، كل الأشياء الجيدة التي لدينا، سأساعد الفريق بطريقة دفاعية وهجومية وأيضًا في الجانب العقلي”.

يتحدث الجميع عن مدى صعوبة الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز هل أنت متحمس لمواجهة التحدي المتمثل في التكيف مع دوري جديد؟

“بالتأكيد، كانت هذه فكرتي الأولى عندما أصبح من الواضح أنني أستطيع اللعب مع ليفربول، لقد حمستني فكرة اللعب في الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز، في النهاية، إنها كرة القدم”.

يوجد الكثير من لاعبي خط الوسط من الدرجة الأولى هنا بالفعل في ليفربول هل يجب أن تقاتل من أجل مكانك تقريبًا من اليوم للانضمام إلى الفريق؟

بدأ نادي برشلونة في التخطيط من أجل حسم بعض الصفقات التي يحتاج الفريق الأول لكرة القدم تحت قيادة المدير الفني الحالي، رونالد كومان، قبل انتهاء الميركاتو الصيفي الحالي.

وأفادت صحيفة “سبورت” الكتالونية  أن البديل الذي استقر عليه برشلونة هو مدافع نادي أتلتيك بلباو، أوناي نونيز، البالغ من العمر 23 عامًا.

وتابعت الصحيفة الشهيرة أن نونيز من المتوقع رحيله عن صفوف أتلتيك بلباو، بعدما طلب الرحيل عن ملعب “سان ماميس” عن طريق الإعارة في مقابل تمديد عقده الذي سينتهي في عام 2023.

لكن المفاوضات بين الجانبين لم تتم بالشكل المنتظر، وتجمدت المحادثات خلال الأشهر الماضية، وربما ذلك يدفع اللاعب للتفكير في الرحيل النهائي وهنا تأتي فرصة برشلونة في دفع قيمة الشرط الجزائي وقدره 30 مليون يورو وربما بالتفاوض مع أتلتيك بلباو يتم تخفيض المبلغ.

What a month it has been. We’ve witnessed Manchester City trim Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to just one point, Fulham and Huddersfield sink further adrift at the bottom, and the race for the Golden Boot hot up – it really is all to play for as we enter the business end to the season.

Anyway, enough about team performances, and onto the players who made the magic happen. Let’s take a look at the Premier League nominees for the PFA Bristol Street Motors Fans’ Player of the Month award for February…

Sergio Aguero

The Manchester City forward enjoyed a phenomenal month in February. Aguero hit back-to-back hat-tricks at the Etihad against Arsenal and Chelsea to equal Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 11 in the competition.

Furthermore, the Argentine also scored from the spot against West Ham to win the game 1-0 and earn his side a crucial three points.

Ashley Barnes

Burnley’s No.10 was in excellent form throughout February. The 29-year-old hit three goals in his four appearances, with those strikes coming in three consecutive games and helping seal impressive results against Tottenham and Manchester United.

Barnes also grabbed an assist in the 3-1 win against his former club, Brighton.

Aymeric Laporte

The Frenchman was instrumental in helping his side regain their footing in the title race during the month of February.

Laporte scored a crucial goal against Everton, set one up against Arsenal and was also handed one Man of the Match award for his performance against the Toffees, to crown an impressive month for the 24-year-old defender.

Paul Pogba

The rejuvenated midfielder continued his fine form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in February. Pogba hit two more goals in his four appearances throughout the month, whilst also setting up a further two as Manchester United staked a claim for a top four place.

Additionally, the French international won the WhoScored Man of the Match award for two of his four performances – impressive stuff.

Raheem Sterling

Sterling earned a perfect 10 rating from WhoScored for his performance in the 6-0 demolition of Chelsea, a game in which he grabbed two goals, including the opener.

The England international also set up two goals against Arsenal to cap off an impressive February for himself and the Citizens.

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool’s colossal centre-back helped his side keep three clean sheets in their four games throughout February, winning a whopping 25 aerial duels and making 23 clearances in that time.

Van Dijk also managed to grab himself two goals, as the Reds ended the month sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League with a massive 5-0 win over Watford.

The rotation provided some of the fringe players with a perfect opportunity to give the former England boss a difficult decision ahead of the Brighton clash this Saturday; Max Meyer couldn’t take it.

On the chalkboard

The congested run of fixtures often forces managers into making changes to their XI that they might not usually and this game was no exception as Andros Townsend, James McArthur and Vicente Guaita dropped to the bench.

Lining up in the 4-3-3 that has brought the Eagles plenty of success in recent weeks, Meyer was granted a rare start and an even rarer deployment as a central-midfielder – his natural position.

The German has largely been used as a wide-man since his arrival at Selhurst Park in the summer and was surely overjoyed to get the nod in his preferred role. Unfortunately for the former Schalke man, though, he was unable to take the chance to give Hodgson a headache going into the next round of fixtures.

Sad Max

Playing alongside the industrious Luka Milivojevic and Cheikhou Kouyate in the middle of the park, there should have been plenty of opportunities for Meyer to make an impact on the front foot – he couldn’t capitalise, though, and was largely a passenger as the front-three went to work.

The 23-year-old failed to take a shot on goal and completed 2 key passes, despite having let fly four times and threaded a crucial ball five times in his previous appearance against the Clarets, in which he played on the left of midfield.

Such is the competition in the midfield, chances in his natural role are extremely hard to come by for the divisive Meyer and, after a lacklustre showing in the middle of the park, he may find that he doesn’t play there again.

There have been shouts for Hodgson to start the number 7, particularly over Jeffrey Schlupp, but there will surely be more who feel that the boss has been right all along now.

وأتم البيان: “بابلو ماري الذي لديه إصابة في الكاحل الأيسر وقد يعود للتدريبات خلال الأسبوعين المقبلين، وجابييرل ماريتنيلي يُعاني من إصابة في الركبة اليسرى يأمل في العودة للتدريبات بحلول نهاية السنة؛ بينما يُعاني موستافي من إصابة في أوتار الركبة اليمنى وقد يعود للتدريبات في أكتوبر”.

أفادت تقارير صحفية بلجيكية، أن المدرب السويسري رينيه فايلر المدير الفني السابق للنادي الأهلي، قد يعود إلى الدوري البلجيكي من جديد، دون ذكر اسم النادي.

What’s the word?

The 25-year-old No. 9 scored his fourth goal in his last four games when he notched the winner against Bristol City at Ashton Gate last time out. However, he also picked up a little knock against the Robins when he collided with the post. He was ultimately unable to complete the 90 minutes, which raised concerns that he’d be unable to face the Royals in mid-week.

However, in his press conference on Monday, which the Yorkshire Evening Post have provided a recording of, Marcelo Bielsa confirmed that the forward is fit and that he would be in the starting line-up on Tuesday.

Resources wearing thin

Bamford’s availability is a major boost for Leeds, as the Whites’ squad options in this part of the pitch are thin on the ground. Having the Englishman ready to play Reading gives Bielsa’s side’s chances of victory a significant lift.

However, as the Championship run in draws nearer, with Leeds still in the thick of the title race, the return of Kemar Roofe becomes a matter of ever-greater urgency.Â

The 26-year-old is the Whites’ top scorer this season, with 14 league strikes under his belt. However, he has been out of action with injury since mid-February. Since then, Bamford has done a good job of covering for Roofe, but with so much football to come, with the pressure on, Bielsa needs to have the option to rotate and change up his strikeforce as required.

In his press conference, as reported by respected journalist Phil Hay, Bielsa announced that Roofe’s recovery is progressing well, but gave no timeframe for the forward’s return.Â

Bamford alone is not enough. Until the No. 7 is back in action then Leeds’ resources will continue to be stretched up front, which could have disastrous consequences for the Yorkshire club’s campaign.

Newcastle United finally seem to be back on track for a strong end to the Premier League. Despite the difficulties, Rafa and his men have come through the pain of the Championship all the way up to what looks like a side that can hold their own in the Premier League once again. 

It’s not the same as the glory days, but Newcastle United fans will be happy to see that their club is FINALLY beginning to take a turn in the right direction.

Indeed, with Rafa at the helm and finally looking as though there will be some serious backing in the summer after the winter arrival of Miguel Almiron, we look at a couple of smart moves Newcastle have made during their rough climb back up to the Geordie standard.

Dwight Gayle 

Signing from Crystal Palace back in 2016, for a fee of around £10m Dwight Gayle was brought in to get Newcastle out of the Championship as soon as possible. Well, scoring 23 goals in the league did just that and the English striker went down as a Newcastle hero during the gruelling Championship season.

Perhaps not Premier League quality, the 28-year-old completed his only task of getting the Toon Army back to the top flight, making him worth every penny.

Martin Dubravka 

Initially signing on a loan deal back in January 2018, Dubravka quickly became an integral part of the Newcastle survival squad.

Prior to his arrival at St. James’, no one had ever heard of the 30-year-old Slovakian, and many fans must have wondered if the board were just signing him as a trial for next season in the Championship.

Despite all the doubt, he came in and kept a clean sheet in his first appearance in a 1-0 win against Manchester United.
