Tottenham have confirmed that Christian Eriksen is a doubt for the match against Watford after picking up a dead leg on international duty, and it has come as good news for some fans.

Others have taken the opportunity to ridicule the 27-year-old by suggesting his legs haven’t been at their best for some time, criticising his lack of contribution in recent months.

That is best shown through the fact that from the 11 matches he has played he only has one goal and one assist to show for his efforts, leading one fan to suggest he shouldn’t be playing anyway until he sorts out his future.

Some supporters have accused the Denmark international of not wanting to play, using a dead leg – which is only a minor injury – as an excuse not to take to the field.

His absence could lead to the inclusion of Lucas Moura, which would please some fans, and it might have a positive effect on the team as they look to get back to winning ways.

Newcastle United fans are furious that both Andy Carroll and Fabian Schar have been ruled out of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Wolves due to injury, as reported by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie on Twitter.

The Swiss defender has featured in all nine Premier League games during the current campaign and has scored one goal.

Things aren’t going too well at Southampton right now.

The Saints’ last league outing saw them suffer a 9-0 defeat to Leicester at St Mary’s, a result that equalled the 24-year long record for the largest ever Premier League win set by Manchester United in 1995.

Incidentally, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are leaking at the back like there’s no tomorrow, shipping the most goals in the Premier League this season with 25 concessions in just ten outings – that does not make for good reading, to say the least.

To make matters worse, the Austrian’s side have scored the third-least amount of goals with nine in ten games.

It goes without saying that, if you’re struggling to keep the goals out at the back, and failing to put the ball in the opponent’s net as well, things aren’t going to go too well for you in football.

So, what can Hasenhuttl do in order to turn the ship around?

Stick with a formation 

In 12 games across both the Premier League and Carabao Cup this season, Hasenhuttl has used six different formations – worryingly, that works out at a different system used every two games on average.

The former RB Leipzig boss has used a 5-4-1, a 3-5-2 flat, a 3-4-1-2, a 4-4-2 double six (4-2-2-2), a 3-4-2-1 and an attacking 4-3-3, and with mixed results – mostly losses, in truth.

The 4-2-2-2 has been used on four occasions, and has seen Southampton win two, draw one and lose one – on that basis, perhaps this is the system that Hasenhuttl should opt for.

One thing is for certain though. The Austrian must settle his players down into one formation.

Stop picking the same underperfoming players

Angus Gunn, James Ward-Prowse and others have all performed poorly so far this term.

In fact, we outlined how the aforementioned duo need to step up, but it is not their fault that Hasenhuttl keeps picking them to play.

Alex McCarthy, an England international, hasn’t made a Premier League appearance yet this term, watching on as Gunn concedes 25 goals in ten games.

Jack Stephens and Kevin Danso have also had to watch from the sidelines as Jan Bednarek, Maya Yoshida and Jannik Vestergaard continuously flounder.

The three of them must be wondering what on earth needs to happen for them to get a chance, and rightly so.

Hasenhuttl has to stop showing loyalty to players who are letting him down.

According to Football Insider, there is a strong possibility that West Brom’s loan star Grady Diangana is recalled by his parent club in January.

But Slaven Bilic may already have his replacement lying in wait at the club.

What’s the word?

Reports claim that Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is ‘increasingly attracted’ by the prospect of recalling the 21-year-old in January.

Diangana does indeed have a clause as part of his loan deal that would allow the manager to do so.

Pellegrini has been kept up-to-date with his performances at the Hawthorns, but he will only be able to act on that option during the first two weeks of January.

A source told Football Insider that the chances of that happening are “genuine” given West Ham’s struggles in front of goal – they have netted just 12 goals from 10 matches this term.

Willock in wait

Diangana has been emphatic for Bilic’s Baggies this campaign, scoring four goals and providing three assists, per WhoScored, so there’s no doubting that his departure would put a huge dent in their promotion hopes.

However, the effect will be less severe once they realise that they already have his replacement lying in wait in Chris Willock.

The former Arsenal graduate has been in red hot form for the U23s this campaign but is yet to taste senior football up in the west Midlands, he has netted two goals and laid on four assists in the Premier League 2, via Transfermarkt.

It seems daft to have brought someone in on deadline day only to force him to play youth football.

Bilic has claimed that the 21-year-old has to wait for his opportunity while his youth teammate Jack Fitzwater believes it is only a matter of time before we see Willock line up on a Saturday.

Albion reportedly want to keep hold of him despite the lack of senior game time, so they can boost his prospects by allowing him to thrive in Diangana’s absence.

وعن شيكابالا، قال: “أحبه، هو طيب جدًا، ولكن الفكرة أنه لا يجب أن يقف لاعب أمام الجمهور، حزنت منه عندما أساء لجماهير الأهلي، لو شيكابالا في الأهلي كان سيصبح له شأن آخر”.

ولـ موسمياني، قال: “أكثر شيء أحبه فيه أنه عندما يرى شيئا يأتي إليّ ويتحدث معي، أتمنى أن يوفقنا الله ونذهب إلى كأس العالم للأندية مرة أخرى معا، وقرار مشاركتي في يده”.

و لـ صالح جمعة، قال: “من أطيب وأجدع الشخصيات، الله يكرمه وأراه مرة أخرى في الأهلي”.

وأتم: “لا أرد على انتقادات الإعلامي مدحت شلبي ضدي، لأنني لا أراه (مش شايفه ولا هشوفه)، وبالنسبة لي هو لم يكن إعلاميًا كبيرًا، وإذا تحدثت عنه سأعطيه أهمية”.

Newcastle may have turned a corner with the performance and result against West Ham, and the front-three showed that when on top form they can be a handful for any opponent.

On the chalkboard

Steve Bruce has faced a tough challenge during his first three months in charge of the Magpies, in what was meant to be a dream job for the boyhood Newcastle fan.

From day one, some fans were against him, and though he was given money to spend he inherited a squad which scored just 42 goals in the league, yet lost 23 goals from that total with the departures of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon.

Despite that, he has done well in parts, and proved that much of the criticism aimed his way has been unwarranted.

He has maintained faith in both his system and his players, and could be about to reap the rewards, starting with Newcastle’s fine display against the Hammers on Saturday, a game they very easily could have led 3-0 at half-time.

With the front three scoring just once between them in ten league games prior to the visit to the London Stadium, some managers would have decided to withdraw them from the team – but not Bruce.

The former Manchester United player has built much of his career on effective man-management. The combination of Miguel Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton has showcased both that and his tactical skills, and Bruce was the reason why his team looked so accomplished in their 3-2 win.

Signs of progress

One of the reasons why Bruce has been somewhat under fire is because of the Magpies’ lack of goals, with six in ten scored before the trip to London.

However, with two summer arrivals starting in attack as well as one who only arrived in January, Bruce should have been afforded more time, as he is now starting to prove that once gelled together, his players are capable of producing winning football.

Alan Shearer noted as much on Match of the Day, as quoted by The Athletic:

“The concern this season for Newcastle has been a lack of creativity and a lack of link-up play between Saint-Maximin, Almiron and Joelinton. But not (against West Ham).”

Bruce knows the limitations of his squad, and should be praised rather than ridiculed for operating with a system which best suits them.

Players like Jetro Willems and Saint-Maximin are beginning to excel under him, whilst his handling of Matty Longstaff and Jonjo Shelvey has also resulted in match-winning moments against Man United and West Ham respectively.

Newcastle may not be a team which dominates the ball, but they have pacy wingers and a target man in Joelinton who, with a bit of confidence, will be able to seek out their runs, and that is now beginning to work well for the Magpies.

Last time out, the west Midlanders needed a second-half goal from Raul Jimenez to clinch a point against Arsenal, but there were encouragements for the future.

None more so than the performance from Ruben Neves, who finally was utilised in an advanced position – and it paid off.

Football FanCast have previously highlighted the need for the Portuguese midfielder to play further forward to draw the best out of him.

He is known for the odd screamer, after all.

In fact, he’s not scored a goal from inside the area (aside from a penalty) in an old gold shirt, per Understat – remarkably at one stage, Neves had more long-range goals than touches inside the penalty box.

Playing next to his fellow countryman Joao Moutinho in a 3-4-3 formation, the 22-year-old was allowed to venture into the final third – 42 of his 45 passes were between the mid and final phases of the pitch.

Neves also managed to fire off four shots at goal, all from considerable range – the most in one game since Burnley at the end of August – which only goes to show that he’s been given a bit more freedom.

This is most emphasised when taking a look at his heatmap from a game like Manchester City, where he was deployed in a very defensive role and this game against Arsenal.

The City victory (left) shows just how deep Neves was, while the Arsenal draw (right) displays him much closer to the opposition’s penalty area with more intensity in their half too.

Wolves may have beaten the reigning champions, but that was down to a moment of brilliance from Adama Traore as he netted a late brace, so that can be discounted in terms of Neves’ own personal performance – he had a far greater impact against the Gunners.

And that is something that needs to continue going forward if Nuno wants his side to score more goals, which should in theory lead to more victories.

Wolves have just drawn too many matches as they sit 12th in the league despite losing the same amount of games as City and fewer matches than Tottenham Hotspur.
