أكد المدير الفني للفريق الأول لكرة القدم بنادي مانشستر سيتي، بيب جوارديولا، على احترامه الشديد لمنافسه سبورتنج لشبونة قبل إياب دور الـ16 من بطولة دوري أبطال أوروبا.

ونجح مانشستر سيتي في سحق سبورتنج لشبونة في البرتغال بمباراة الذهاب بنتيجة 0-5، ويلتقيان مجددًا غدًا على ملعب “الاتحاد” في تمام الساعة العاشرة مساءًا بتوقيت “القاهرة”.

وتحدث جوارديولا عن تلك المواجهة في مؤتمره الصحفي وقال: “عادة ما تكون الفرق البرتغالية المشاركة هي بورتو أو بنفيكا، كان سبورتنج لشبونة يعاني لبضع سنوات ولكن الأشخاص الجدد يغيرون الأجواء للأفضل”.

وتابع: “هناك مدرب ممتاز وهم أبطال الدوري البرتغالي، نجحنا في هز الشباك سريعًا وهذا يحدث أحيانًا وبعد ذلك تتسهل المهمة من خلال السيطرة وتكون النتيجة جيدة لكني أحترمهم على أي حال وسنستهدف الفوز عليهم”.

وحالة زينتشينكو: “جاهز للمشاركة، لكنها فترة ليست سهلة بالنسبة له”.

وعن المنافسة القوية في الدوري الإنجليزي: “مانشستر يونايتد يحقق نتائج جيدة جدًا، قام تشيلسي بعمل مماثل، في بعض المباريات تكون لدينا سهولة في تسجيل الأهداف كما حدث في البرتغال، لم تكن لدينا استعدادات خاصة، الجميع مستعد وعلينا أن نكون كذلك لأن هناك بعض الأشياء الغبية التي قد تحدث، لا يمكننا الاستهتار بالهجمات المرتدة، يجب أن نلعب من أجل الحفاظ على النتيجة والفوز بمباراة الغد”.

وبسؤاله هل يمكن لمانشستر سيتي الفوز بثنائي الدوري الإنجليزي ودوري أبطال أوروبا معًا؟، أجاب: “يمكن أن يحدث ذلك، علينا استعادة جميع اللاعبين المصابين والغائبين لتحمل الضغوط، نحن بحاجة إلى فريق قوي لينافس على كل البطولات وسنركز في كل خطوة حتى نصل إلى أهدافنا”.

The former Monaco man has been crucial to the Foxes’ success this season, starting 35 of Leicester’s 36 Premier League games, scoring six goals and providing four assists in the process. His exploits have helped the 2015/16 champions to break into the top four once again, and a place in the 2021/22 edition of the Champions League is well within their grasp.

As the Foxes continue to assert themselves at the top end of the table and disturb the established ‘Big Six,’ keeping hold of their best assets will be critical to their continued progression.

Tielemans’ impressive 7.09 WhoScored rating illustrates his importance to Leicester and his quality was further highlighted by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola after an impressive display against the Cityzens earlier in the campaign.

Former Sheffield Wednesday star Jon Newsome has told The Transfer Tavern that the club will find it immensely difficult to gain promotion back to the Championship after their relegation.

Wednesday ended the season rock-bottom of the Championship table after drawing 3-3 with Derby County on the final day.

In total, Darren Moore’s side took just 41 points from their 46 games, and will now set about planning for a return to the second-tier.

Newsome, though, thinks that Wednesday face a real battle to earn promotion back to the Championship, especially given the financial issues they are facing.

He has revealed that the club have a wage bill worth over £20m, a figure that simply is not sustainable in the third-tier.

Per The Daily Mail, the average wage of the highest earner at each club earns £4,753-per-week.

Per Salary Sport, no fewer than 22 players earn in excess of that amount; Jordan Rhodes earns £35,000-per-week.

As a result, Newsome thinks the club will struggle immensely to find their way back into the second-tier, as a number of players will be offloaded.

He told TT: “Obviously, it’s a really difficult league to get out of. Look at Hull City, who’ve done an amazing job, dropping down last year and they got a promotion the first year back, there’s not many clubs that do that.

“It’s going to be a really difficult task to get that club out, especially when you look at the rotation of the squad, the number of players who are leaving, the high earners.

“They’ve got a massive wage bill at Sheffield Wednesday at the moment, I’m led to believe it’s in excess of £20 million a year as a wage bill. That’s not sustainable in League One.

“The club’s revenue will fall by a minimum of £8 million just by dropping down into that league. There’s going to be a massive turnover of footballers at that club.”

With the Premier League season now over, Marcelo Bielsa’s side can now firmly turn their attentions towards the summer transfer window, and it appears the club are already kick-starting things in terms of their recruitment.

According to German publication Kicker (via Sport Witness), the Whites are “intensifying contact” with Cunha over signing him, despite the news that Hertha actually extended his deal during the season, making it much harder for any interested clubs.

The report adds that “Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa had already made contact with Cunha in the January transfer market, and now they are ‘intensifying’ their ‘courtship‘.”

Forget Rodrigo

While last summer’ signing Rodrigo appeared to find his feet in the final few weeks of the Premier League campaign – he netted four times and provided an assist in his last four games – it’s no surprise that Leeds are looking to sign Cunha.

The 21-year-old Brazilian is equally as versatile as Rodrigo, and this season has proved that he can be a really devastating attacking force, bagging eight goals and setting up another eight in all competitions.

Dubbed as “something special” by former Hertha head coach Bruno Labbadia, the club’s one-time sporting director Michael Preetz has also raved about him, saying: “Matheus is a young player with enormous potential, who has already shown his impressive skills.”
