Neil Fairbrother joined Tim Roberts at the crease and saw Lancashire past the hundred mark before Roberts was out for 55.It was then down to Graham Lloyd to help Fairbrother knock off the remaining runs and they did so timing the run chase perfectively at just over three runs per over. Postecoglou must unleash Dembele after Celtic promise

Ange Postecoglou will arrive at Celtic, following his quarantine, with a certain set of habits.

The Australian will bring high pressing intensity to Parkhead and an attacking brand of football capable of frightening any opposition.

He also has a tendency to employ the younger stars of tomorrow. During the 2021 J-League campaign, Postecoglou unleashed three teenagers for Yokohama Marinos.

For a Celtic side who have neglected their reserves, this bodes well.

That’s especially if you consider the words of the 55-year-old on his first day in the job.

Speaking in his opening interview with the Bhoys, Postecoglou said: “I’m a big believer that, if you can produce homegrown talent and players who have come through the club, there’s extra meaning to represent that football club for the player. For the supporters, they see one of their own out there and I think that’s very important.”

The new boss added: “The first step of that is to make sure the talent is being produced and nurtured at the club. I want to get really involved in the Academy process and see where they’re at. They’ve produced some fantastic footballers in recent times.

“My job is to give those footballers an opportunity and make them realise their potential. For me, age is irrelevant.”

This term, Neil Lennon failed to ever really bring through many young players with Karamoko Dembele playing just 71 minutes under the Northern Irishman.

John Kennedy made more of an effort to include the younger players in the squad with Adam Montgomery making his first-team debut.

Dembele also had a chance to prove himself, scoring his opening goal in senior football on the penultimate weekend.

The lively winger has been the darling of the Celtic academy for some time and if Postecoglou is true to his word, he will finally get an opportunity for regular minutes next term.

The 18-year-old has had to wait patiently for opportunities but they haven’t been truly forthcoming. He made his debut as a 16-year-old but has still only played on eight occasions, failing to make a start.

This was a troublesome campaign for the teenager who was alienated from the squad for a period of time after refusing to go out on loan and develop his game.

Despite that disruption, he’s still a fabulous young talent, a player capable of beating defenders for fun.

Speaking after his first-team breakthrough, Ruud Gullit called him an “exceptionally good” performer.

That’s high praise from such an illustrious figure in the world of football, but it demonstrates why he needs to be given a bigger platform at Celtic. Hopefully, Postecoglou will finally give him that.

AND in other news, Postecoglou could revive Celtic with summer swoop for “phenomenal” 30-goal “machine”…

One-day Tournament (Associations): Karachi Blues trounce Lahore Blues by 6 wickets

One-day Tournament (Associations): Match Report

Mahmood Ahmed29-Apr-2001Karachi Cricket Association Blues trounced Lahore Cricket Association Blues by 6 wickets in the first match of the One-day Tournament (Associations), played at the LCA Ground, Lahore.Asked to bat first on a grassy track, Lahore Blues got to a fine start, with their openers – Aamer Manzoor and Kamran Akmal – posting 33 on the board in about 7 overs. However, disaster struck when they lost three wickets with the addition of only 5 runs, reducing the home team to 38 for three by the 8th over.It was then up to a fine effort by Mohammad Ashraf Ali (67 off 110) to hold the innings together. however, there was little support for him at the other end, with the middle order just failing to make any worthwhile contribution.Losing 7 of their top batsmen for just 108, even 150 looked a remote possibility. However, Ashraf found an able ally in Ahmed Khan. Both batted with responsibility, taking the score to 170, after adding 62 for the 8th wicket. After the departure of Ashraf at this stage, all the resistance just fizzled out, the remaining batsmen even failing to play out their full quota of overs. they were eventually all out for 198 in the 50th over, with Ahmed Khan remaining not out on 40 (68 balls, 4 fours). For Karachi, Rajesh Ramesh, Rizwan Qureshi, Mansoor Khan and Rizwan Saeed bowled well, getting 2 wickets each. Harris Ayaz bowled tidily for his ten overs, bagging one wicket for just 27 runs.Karachi Blues had not a confident start to their innings, losing Tariq Haroon for naught with only 8 on the board. But then a second-wicket partnership of 73 in around 11 overs between Zahid Ghouri (77 off 67 balls, 12 fours) and Atif Ali Zaidi (37 off 37 balls, 6 fours) completely turned the tables.Thereafter, it was just a matter of time when Karachi overhauled the required target of 199 in the 41st over, with Mansoor Baig and Bilal Murtaza remaining not out on 42 (67 balls) and 16 (40 balls), respectively.Lahore skipper employed seven bowlers in an attempt to thwart the Karachi’s cruise towards victory. However, none of them, except Salman Qadir could impress the batsmen. Salman bagged two wickets for 42 in 10 overs.

Everton: Toffees offer Ellis Simms fresh terms

Everton have decided to offer 20-year-old starlet Ellis Simms fresh contract terms, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

The Lowdown: Everton gear up for 2021/22

As the Toffees look to get their ducks in a row ahead of the 2021/22 season, you could be forgiven for thinking that player imports were the only concern of the Goodison Park hierarchy.

Everton have been linked with the likes of Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon in recent weeks [ToffeeWeb].

However, preserving their key crop of young talent has also seemingly become a priority for the Merseyside giants this summer, in particular, Simms, who may become a younger alternative for the now-departed Joshua King [Guardian].

The Latest: Simms has been offered a new deal at Goodison Park

The Oldham-born forward has been given the chance to sign an extension at the club, as his current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2022, meaning he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club next January [Liverpool Echo].

Despite this, the Finch Farm product has previously discussed a move away from Merseyside, saying in a previous interview: “Who knows what the future will bring?” [Liverpool Echo].

The Verdict: Simms should receive first-team openings next season

Undoubtedly, Everton fans will be hoping that those at the club do all they cato keep hold of their premium talent. Enjoying a sparkling 2020/21 on loan at Blackpool; he helped the Seasiders to promotion from League One, scoring 10 goals from 23 appearances [Transfermarkt].

Once labelled ‘outstanding’ by Everton Under-18’s coach Keith Southern, he is someone with a bright future in the game and it would be a blow to lose his services [Liverpool Echo].

Nevertheless, the inkling that he has been guaranteed some sort of future at the Blues through having a new deal on the table is a positive for the Everton faithful.

Should he elect to stay at Goodison Park, the Toffees should look to pre-season as an opportunity to bed him into a senior environment as he’s shown whilst out on loan that he’s deserving of a chance to make a name for himself at Goodison.

In other news, Lawrie Sanchez has commented on Everton coach Duncan Ferguson.

Braced for backlash

On the heels of two successive victories over their formidable opponents, Carl Hooper is expecting South Africa to rebound with venom in the second Cable & Wireless One-Day International at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) today

Haydn Gill02-May-2001On the heels of two successive victories over their formidable opponents, Carl Hooper is expecting South Africa to rebound with venom in the second Cable & Wireless One-Day International at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) today.”They are definitely going to come back. There are no two ways about that,” the West Indies captain said yesterday.”They are going to come back, and come back hard in this game, and we have got to be prepared for that.”South Africa’s last-ball defeat in the opening match of the series at Sabina Park on Saturday was only their second loss in their last 12 One-Day Internationals and it followed a defeat against the West Indies in the final match of the Test series. Two wins in succession, in whatever form of the game, have not been commonplace for the West Indies during the last ten months, but they are not enough to make Hooper’s men feel they are on top of the world.”I don’t think we are in a position where we can even think about being complacent,” he said.”We’re only 1-0 up in a seven-match series, so there is still a lot of cricket to be played. If we had won four (games), we probably would be looking at it differently. We’ve got to try and win this one here and try and win four games as quickly as possible.”Hooper was speaking after the West Indies’ practice session at the Airport Ground and he pronounced himself fully fit after sustaining cramps in both legs while batting on Saturday.”Jamaica was just a bout of cramps caused by the loss of too much water but I am 100 per cent fit and ready to go,” he said.”I had a bat yesterday and today and I feel fine. I’m okay.”West Indies, however, suffered a casualty with the unavailability of the hard-hitting Ricardo Powell, who sustained a thigh strain while batting in Jamaica. In any case, there was a feeling that Shivnarine Chanderpaul would have challenged Powell for his place. There is another change to the side, with local boy Kerry Jeremy predictably making way for Nixon McLean. Jeremy bowled five expensive overs in Jamaica. The match is the West Indies’ first at the ARG since 1989 and only the sixth ever One-Day International in this country.West Indies have never lost here in their previous four appearances, but when they last played at the ground, Vivian Richards was still captain of a team that included the likes of Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Jeffrey Dujon, Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Ian Bishop.Interestingly enough, Haynes made a century when the ARG hosted its first One-Day International in 1978 and Greenidge had the pleasure of hitting the only other three-digit score when the ground staged its last match involving the West Indies.Hooper is the only survivor from those days. The recent wins would have boosted everyone, but the West Indies captain said it was important that the trend be maintained.”We struggled a little bit during the Test series and we finally managed to pull one back in Jamaica and then won the first One-Day game, which was good for our confidence,” he said.”Obviously, we want to continue the winning ways and hopefully build team-morale and confidence as we look towards the future.”What the experience of the last two weeks proved to the West Indies was that they have what it requires to overcome opponents who trounced them 5-0 in the 1998-99 Test series and 6-1 in the One-Day Internationals that followed.”We’ve won one and think we should have won that one by a wider margin,” Hooper said in reference to the Jamaica match in which the West Indies nearly slipped up in pursuit of a target of 201.”We’ve shown that we’ve got what it takes to beat them. I don’t see any reason why shouldn’t win again here and then hopefully take the same thing down to Grenada.”The match marks the debut One-Day International appearance of Antiguan umpire Clancy Mack.

AVFC: Danny Mills drops Harry Winks claim

Football Insider pundit Dany Mills believes Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks could join Aston Villa this summer.

The Lowdown: Winks set for Spurs exit?

Winks has been with Spurs since 2016 and is under contract until 2024, however, it appears he could be on the move from north London in the current window.

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a source, incoming Tottenham recruitment chief Fabio Paratici will tell the central midfielder that the club will listen to offers for his services this summer.

The 25-year-old has made 173 appearances for Spurs, but it appears as if he may not add to that tally.

The Latest: Mills’ claim

Mills, 44, was talking to Football Insider and admitted he saw the England international playing golf at The Belfry, hinting at a possible house hunting trip to the Midlands.

“I don’t see him getting into that Spurs side.

“It depends who comes and goes this summer but he’s down the pecking order. He has been for some time now.

“He needs to get playing. I see him going to Wolves and Aston Villa. He was seen playing golf at The Belfry.

“Let’s assume he was house hunting. I can confirm he was there.”

The Verdict: Do Villa need him?

Should Villa be in for Winks this summer, it could prove to be a smart signing by Dean Smith.

Winks is capable of playing as a defensive or central midfielder and could end up bolstering Villa’s options in the middle of the park, should he seal a move.

Conor Hourihane is unsure where his future lies, whereas Manchester City are considering exercising their buy-back clause for Douglas Luiz. Should those two depart, a move for Winks may be good business.
