Daniel Vettori believes New Zealand will be worse off for Australia’s 2-0 loss in India when the two teams meet in the first Test at the Gabba next Thursday. Vettori, the New Zealand captain, said Australia were always a major challenge at home and coming off the defeat in India they would be even more desperate to reassert their authority.”This is the first time I suppose that they’ve been beaten in a series comprehensively by an opposition side,” Vettori said. “I look at the Aussie team and think they are quite a resilient side and I’m sure they are going to bounce back and will want to answer some critics in the next couple of Test matches.”New Zealand have not won a Test in Australia since 1985-86 and are significant underdogs in the two-match series after they were forced to toil hard to beat Bangladesh last month. Australia are not the dominant force they once were – their past two Tests at home resulted in a draw and a loss to India – but they have failed to win only one of their past 13 home series.”You look at the Australia team and their performances in their own country over the last few years have been almost impeccable,” Vettori said. “It’s going to be difficult, I’m sure they will be hurting as a side after losing the Test series.”Since their previous Test tour of Australia in 2004-05, New Zealand have lost several key players and of the squad for Brisbane, only Vettori, Brendon McCullum, Chris Martin and Kyle Mills have Test experience in Australia. The loss of Jacob Oram, who has a back injury, is a major blow, although Vettori expects his side will be competitive.”We are quite inexperienced, but in saying that I still think this is a nucleus of a good side, so hopefully we can come here and perform,” he said. “But I think you will see the best of this side as it starts to mature, particularly our young batsmen.”New Zealand have been training at the SCG ahead of their only tour match, a four-day game against New South Wales that begins on Thursday. After the Gabba Test the teams head to Adelaide for the second and final Test, which starts on November 28.

Lookman must start for Leicester v Man City

Leicester City will be hoping to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League when they host champions Manchester City this afternoon.

The Foxes pulled off an astonishing 5-2 victory over the Cityzens at the Etihad Stadium last season, as well as defeating them in last month’s Community Shield, and Brendan Rodgers may be able to repeat the trick at the King Power Stadium this time around.

After the likes of Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare and Jannik Vestergaard arrived in the Midlands over the summer transfer window, Leicester’s recruitment got even better on deadline day when Ademola Lookman signed on a season-long loan deal from RB Leipzig.

The 23-year-old impressed with Fulham last season, bagging four goals and providing four assists in 34 top-flight appearances, and Rodgers is looking forward to working with the youngster this time around.

“I’m really excited about working with Ade. He’s a top talent. I wanted to take him to Celtic when he was at Charlton. I was aware of him when he was 15,” he said in Thursday’s press conference.

“He has all the tools; he has a great dribbling ability, how he views the game, he has an eye for a goal. My hope is that this environment will give him a chance to flourish. Hopefully, he can find a home here. I have no doubt the supporters will be excited by him.”

Lookman could get a first chance to impress his new fanbase when Pep Guardiola brings his charges to the King Power Stadium, with Rodgers confirming that the former England under-21 international is available for selection.

“He’s available. He looks fit and strong. If he doesn’t start, he may play some part in the game,” the Northern Irishman revealed.

Although Lookman prefers to be on the left wing, allowing him to cut inside on his stronger right foot and unleash efforts on goal, Harvey Barnes’ presence on that flank could see him fielded in a more unusual role.

“He can play in a number of positions. His preferred position is off the left side. He can play on the inside as well and on the right. He’s very balanced,” Rodgers admitted.

Therefore, the former Liverpool boss must take advantage of his new signing’s versatility and unleash him against Manchester City today.

With Ayoze Perez unavailable through suspension, this could be the ideal game for Lookman to get used to his new surroundings without any great pressure to perform, and he could inspire the Foxes to another memorable victory over Guardiola’s side.

Former Test opener Hibbert dies at 56

Paul Hibbert, the opening batsman who played one Test for Australia in 1977-78, has been found dead in his Melbourne home

Cricinfo staff28-Nov-2008Paul Hibbert, the opening batsman who played one Test for Australia in 1977-78, has been found dead in his Melbourne home. Hibbert, 56, was reportedly found by police in his loungeroom after a relative became concerned at not having heard from him for more than a week.A watchful left-hand batsman, Hibbert was part of the Victoria side for a decade and he finished his first-class career with 4790 runs at 38.62. He was named for the Gabba Test against India in December 1977 and made 13 from 77 balls in the first innings and 2 in the second. “He was a bit unlucky to make his debut on a greentop at the Gabba,” former Victoria captain Ray Bright said. “If it had been a flat deck at Adelaide, who knows how he would have gone? It’s all a matter of opportunity. His son Daniel said an autopsy had showed that Hibbert had suffered an internal haemorrhage, possibly related to alcoholism. He was believed to have also been suffering from depression. His call-up came after he made a remarkably defensive century against the Indians in their tour match in Melbourne. Hibbert became only the second batsman to score a hundred without managing a boundary. Hibbert was also a useful left-arm medium-pace bowler and he collected 15 first-class wickets.

Celtic: Frank McAvennie critical of Ralston

Frank McAvennie has accused Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston of being ‘lazy’ in the defeat to Real Betis on Thursday.

The 61-year-old, a former striker who had two memorable spells with the Hoops, was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Celtic fell to defeat in their Europa League Group G opener at the Estadio Benito Villamarin in Seville.

They actually led 2-0 inside the half-hour mark, but quickfire goals from the hosts levelled the game before half-time and Betis were up 4-2 by the 53rd minute as the Celtic defence collapsed.

Ralston’s header in the 87th minute reduced the arrears, but Ange Postecoglou’s side were unable to claw back a point in the short time that remained.

The latest

McAvennie was keen to stress that Ralston’s attacking output has been impressive – he has now scored three goals and provided one assist this season – but the Parkhead legend wants more commitment defensively from the £5,500-a-week earner, who was caught out of position for the goal from which Betis took the lead.

“Ralston wasn’t tracking back last night,” McAvennie told Football Insider on Friday. “I know he’s trying hard and doing well, scoring goals which is impressive for a full back.

“I just want my defenders to defend, it’s lazy. Celtic can’t keep playing well and losing.

“The manager needs to tighten it up because we keep conceding.”

The verdict

The statistics can only account for so much, but the bare numbers actually reflect pretty well on Ralston despite the above criticism. He won the majority of his 14 ground duels and wasn’t dribbled past at any point during the game (via SofaScore).

Still, you can understand McAvennie’s frustration given that this feels like a major missed more opportunity for Celtic. It’s such a difficult group, with games against Ferencvaros, who knocked Celtic out of the Champions League qualifiers in 2020, and Bayer Leverkusen to come.

A estratégia do Botafogo ficou bem clara: ficar fechadinho e buscar contra-ataques.

O Corinthians manteve a pressão.
