Odds-on favourites Oman crushed Bhutan by 213 runs in the final of the Asian Cricket Council Challenge in Chiang Mai. Put into bat, Oman amassed 322 for 9 and then dismissed Bhutan for 109.The decision to insert Oman caused raised eyebrows as the conditions looked perfect for batting, and so it proved. Maqsood Hussain, whose 76 runs in the tournament included 72 in boundaries, cracked 14 off six balls and from then on it was one-way traffic. The key moment came when Adnan Ilyas was dropped when on 8 by the wicketkeeper in the day’s third over. He raced to 50 off 38 balls and brought up his hundred off 95, and by the time he was bowled by legspinner Jigme Singye for 113 the game was all but beyond Bhutan. “We were waiting for the mistakes,” Bhutan’s coach Damber Singh Gurung admitted, “But we made them.”Bhutan did well to keep things under some semblance of control after Ilyas departed, the last 16 overs only producing 107 runs for the loss of six wickets, but the damage had been done.Oman’s bowlers were as tight as their batsmen had been rampant. Bolstered by an attacking field of four slips, Farhan Khan, who was named bowler of the tournament, took 2 for 19 and Hemal Mehta almost took a hat-trick as he finished with 3 for 22.Opener Kumar Subba set out his stall to bat through the innings, grinding out 40 off 103 deliveries, and at the halfway point Bhutan were 65 for 4. He was eventually beaten for pace by Awal Khan and the victory was completed in the 43rd over.In the third/fourth place play-off, Thailand, who were widely expected to make the final until their shock defeat by Bhutan, ended on another disappointment as they lost by eight wickets to Maldives. Thailand were skittled for 60 as daft run-outs coupled with Abdulla Shahid, who took 4 for 13 off his ten overs, took their toll. Maldives lost an early wicket but a second-wicket stand of 44 between Ahmed Hussain and Ahmed Hassan ensured there were no more alarms.

Exclusive: Jemson drops verdict on Liverpool’s Bissouma pursuit

Former Premier League star Nigel Jemson does not believe that Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma has the right profile to play for Liverpool amid links with the star.

Bissouma has emerged as a star at the Amex Stadium, since his arrival from Lille in the summer of 2018.

Brighton paid a total of £15m to bring him in from the French club and he has become an undisputed starter under the management of Graham Potter.

The Mali international has gone on to play 101 times for Brighton in defensive midfield and he has recently claimed that he believes he is the best midfielder in the Premier League.

Liverpool have been linked with a potential swoop, as have a variety of top English clubs.

Bissouma’s contract expires in 2023 and he is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, but Jemson does not think that he has the right profile to go into the Anfield squad.

Indeed, Liverpool already have a number of midfielders who could be termed as industrious, such as Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “You look at Wijnaldum. For me, I think he was a very good player and very underrated because he could do both, he could break up play and score goals as well. I don’t think they need one of those sorts of players right now.”

Doherty’s days at Spurs are numbered

Nuno Santo’s latest Tottenham Hotspur starting XI was quite damning.

Once again, his former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matt Doherty did not feature as the pair made their returns to Molineux on Wednesday evening.

Instead, the Portuguese head coach opted for young academy graduate Japhet Tanganga, who appeared to be the first-choice at right-back until the deadline day arrival of Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

It now essentially leaves the 29-year-old as third-choice in north London.

Many could be forgiven in thinking that the arrival of Nuno would’ve given the Northern Ireland international the boost he needed to truly kickstart his Spurs career, particularly after he made 142 appearances under him in the old gold.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth as his future at the club looks as far away as it’s ever been, even under Jose Mourinho.

Back in February, ESPN reported that Doherty’s future was in doubt under the ‘Special One’ despite signing him for £15m earlier in the summer. He struggled to impress the former Spurs boss, who was even seen berating him from the sideline during one defeat to Liverpool – his red card against Leeds didn’t help either.

But with Mourinho gone, things have not changed for the £14.4m-rated dud whatsoever.

Under his former boss, Doherty has played only 277 minutes across all competitions so far this campaign, in which none of his appearances have been starts domestically, as per Transfermarkt.

He now has two other players ahead of him in the pecking order, so when January swings around, it would hardly be a surprise to see him moved on, especially as he’s reportedly earning wages of around £65k-per-week.

talkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook even claimed in the summer that Doherty was surplus to requirements, so that only reinforces the potential of him leaving come the turn of the year.

Last season, the vastly-experienced defender was described as a “weak link” by BBC Sport contributor Premier League Panel.

After his latest snub, Doherty’s days are surely numbered at Tottenham Hotspur.

AND in other news, Paratici could make his biggest Spurs mistake yet as January transfer report emerges…

Leeds tipped to make move for Louis Sibley

Leeds United could make a move for exciting Derby County youngster Louie Sibley, according to former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips.

The Lowdown: Derby in crisis

While the Whites have managed to become an established Premier League club again, Derby find themselves in a financial crisis and are under threat of heading down to League One.

They have now been docked 12 points because of entering administration, in what is a hugely sad period for the club, perhaps one so damning that even Leeds fans will feel some sympathy… perhaps.

The Latest: Leeds tipped to sign Sibley

Derby’s current situation could of course mean they have to sell players in order to generate funds and Sibley is one who could earn them a good amount of money as a young and homegrown talent.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move to Leeds in the past, and speaking to Football Insider, Phillips, 48, also a regular on Sky Sports, tipped them to come back in for him:

“Unfortunately, when someone is having a tough time there are always predators waiting to jump and take advantage of the situation.

“It hurts me to see what is happening at Derby having spent three years there as a coach. Mel Morris did great things with the stadium and the training ground there but if you’re not careful it can come back to bite you on the backside. We have seen it happen to Leeds over the years.

“There is an opportunity now for clubs to sign the good players Derby have got for next to nothing. There will probably be some daft offers going in. Derby will need the money unless they find a buyer by then.

“It’s another opportunity for Leeds to sign Louie Sibley. I know very well and let me tell you he’d be a brilliant signing for them.”

The Verdict: Exciting young prospect

Sibley is a young player with plenty of potential – he was once described as ‘outstanding’ by Derby Under-23s coach Pat Lyons – so Leeds would be wise to consider a move for him.

The midfielder has already made 60 appearances for Derby despite his tender years, showing that he is clearly trusted to be a key figure.

Granted, the step up to the Premier League is great, but Sibley is someone who could be viewed as a future regular, perhaps easing his way in slowly at Elland Road as a long-term prospect.

In other news, one Leeds player received criticism after the defeat to West Ham. Find out who it is here.

Vaas sets his sights on 2011 World Cup

Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is keen to get back into the one-day fold and hopes the 2011 World Cup would provide the stage for his final bow

Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is keen to get back into the one-day fold and hopes the 2011 World Cup will provide the stage for his final bow. “For a cricketer it is a challenge, and you’ve got to have those challenges,” he said. “But I am confident that I will get back. The 2011 World Cup will be my last World Cup and I am going to finish my cricket then.”Vaas, who is still going strong in Tests, has picked up 354 wickets in the 109 matches he has played, but has not featured in a one-dayer since the 2-3 home series loss against India in August last year. He has reason to be hopeful, though, after grabbing 400 wickets in 322 ODIs – only the fourth bowler after Muttiah Muralitharan (505), Wasim Akram (502), Waqar Younis (416) to have reached the 400-milestone in ODIs.”I have been playing domestic cricket back home, both three-dayers and one-dayers and am looking forward to the Tests. I still want to come back in the ODIs.”He was also enthusiastic about the next generation of fast bowlers from Sri Lanka. “I think we have good fast bowlers coming up, we have a good academy under [Champaka] Ramanayake which has produced some good bowlers,” he said. “It is a challenge to keep up with that, but it is good that we have so many coming up.”Vaas, who picked up 1 for 30 in the 10 overs he bowled during the tour game against the Pakistan Cricket Board Patron’s XI in Karachi today, expected a tough challenge from Pakistan in the two-Test series, the first of which gets under way in Karachi on Saturday.”Well the wicket was flat, there was nothing for the fast bowlers but we had good practice. Pakistan is a tough side so I am looking forward to the encounter.”
