E a torcida do Flamengo resolveu entrar toda faltando 10 minutos. E muita gente estava sem ingresso. Aí, afunilou e deu a confusão toda.

Wolves plotting swoop for Guilherme Arana

Wolverhampton Wanderers are plotting a swoop to bring Guilherme Arana to Molineux in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by transfer expert Ekrem Konur, with the journalist revealing on Twitter that Jeff Shi is planning to open negotiations with Atletico Mineiro regarding a deal for the left-back this winter.

Previous reports had claimed that Wolves were scouting the player following his highly impressive performances for Brazil at this summer’s Olympics, while Everton are also believed to be monitoring the 24-year-old ahead of a potential January move.

In his tweet, Konur said: “Wolves have added Guilherme Arana to their transfer list. They plan to talk with Atletico MG in January.”

Lage would love him

It is easy to see why Shi would be keen to open negotiations regarding a deal for Arana in the coming months, as the left-back impressed for Brazil this summer, as well for Atletico Mineiro so far this season.

Indeed, over his six appearances in the Olympics, the £7.2m-rated defender helped his side to keep three clean sheets, registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates, as well as making 1.2 key passes, 0.7 interceptions and 2.3 tackles and winning 5.5 duels per game.

These returns saw the 24-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 7.17, ranking him as Brazil’s fourth-best performer on the way to winning the Olympic gold medal.

Furthermore, the player who Andre Jardine dubbed a “spectacular” talent has also impressed over his 17 Serie A appearances this season, helping Atletico Mineiro to keep seven clean sheets, providing five assists and creating three big chances – returns which have seen the left-back average a SofaScore match rating of 7.15.

As such, being a player who is equally adept in a creative capacity as he is solid at the back, Arana seems like someone who Lage would love to have as a left wing-back option in his Wolves squad, as well as being a player who could help inspire the Midlanders to a top 10 finish in the league this season.

WBA dealt major blow in Ferguson dispute

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt a major blow in their dispute concerning compensation for Nathan Ferguson.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report by The Athletic, West Brom will receive just £900,000 in compensation following the right-back’s move from The Hawthorns to Crystal Palace on a free transfer in the summer of 2020, after a tribunal decided that the figure was a fair amount for the Premier League club to pay to the Baggies.

However, it is reported that, after the two clubs had agreed an £8m deal for the defender (rising to £11m if add-ons were met) in the January prior to the 21-year-old’s eventual move, Albion were expecting to receive a figure of between £5m and £10m for the former England under-20 international.

Fans will be fuming

The news that West Brom look set to receive such a small amount for the departure of Ferguson will come as a double blow to the club. Not only did the Baggies lose the services of one of their most promising young talents, they also appear to have been extremely short-changed from his move to Crystal Palace – something which will certainly leave The Hawthorns faithful fuming.

Indeed, over Ferguson’s 21 Championship appearances for Albion back in 2019/20, the £3.6m-rated defender helped his side to keep three clean sheets, scored one goal and registered one assist, as well as making 0.9 interceptions, 2.4 tackles and 1.7 clearances and winning 6.9 duels per game.

These returns saw the man who Slaven Bilic dubbed a “quality” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.70, a very impressive feat considering that it was the youngster’s breakthrough season in the second tier.

As such, it is easy to see why Palace agreed to pay an initial £8m for the £34k-per-week defender back in January 2020, and why everyone involved with West Brom will be extremely disappointed at only receiving £900,000 for the youngster.

Pratto compreende pichação: 'Time atravessa pior momento da história'

Ainda assim, o time ocupa a penúltima posição e frequenta constantemente a zona de rebaixamento.

England make most of Ashes practice

Ravi Bopara racked up his fourth first-class hundred in consecutive matches for England, while Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior chipped in with useful half-centuries

Ravi Bopara racked up his fourth first-class hundred in consecutive matches while Paul Collingwood and Matt Prior chipped in with useful half-centuries, as England completed their Ashes preparations with a quietly dominant final day against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. After rain delayed the start until 2.15 pm, England batted on for just over an hour and then whittled away three wickets in 12 overs before agreeing to a finish at the earliest possible time of 5.00 pm.It was an unsatisfactory end to a contest that was as far removed as possible from the dogfight taking place down the road at Worcester, and quite understandably there was a chorus of boos from the smattering of spectators who hung around to watch the action. But this match hadn’t had a properly competitive edge since the first day, and the prospect of putting the feet up and watching Andy Murray’s semi-final tussle at Wimbledon was clearly more alluring to England’s cricketers. Relaxation, after all, will be vital to their performance in the coming days.”Everyone is pretty relaxed and everyone is playing well,” Bopara said. “The way our bowlers played here gives them confidence, and gives the batters confidence as well. We coped well on this sort of deck and we are very relaxed. Everyone seems chilled but working really hard. Everyone has been in the nets and in the gym getting ready in every possible way, whether it is strength, fitness or technique, so we are ready for Wednesday.”Bopara didn’t give any impression of mounting nerves whatsoever. He resumed unbeaten on 88, and duly went to his hundred from 153 balls with his first lofted shot of the match, a cover-driven six into the Tom Dollery Stand. He retired his innings at the end of the same Boyd Rankin over, whereupon Collingwood and Matt Prior took the team along to an imposing 319 for 3 at tea, after which Andrew Strauss declared to give his fast bowlers one final gallop before Cardiff.Chasing a nominal 508, Warwickshire lost their captain, Ian Westwood, for 5 to a good length lifter from Stuart Broad that was edged to the keeper, and when Jim Troughton was crassly run out in the same over for a second-ball duck, there was the brief suspicion that England might push for a quick victory. That prospect became all the more likely when Andrew Flintoff induced an edge to Andrew Strauss at first slip to remove Ateeq Javid for 3. But then, out of the blue, quite literally for the sky was totally clear, the teams decided to shake hands, and that was emphatically that.”It has been a good little run-in to the first Test,” Bopara said. “The boys got a hit and the bowlers bowled well, and looked on fire with the ball. We’re happy all round. The standard wasn’t as high as next week, but there’s nothing better for a cricketer than spending time out in the middle. As a batsman you can work five days a week for five hours in the nets, and it is not the same as going out in the middle.”Perhaps the most meaningful preparation for England’s cricketers came from watching the TV in the dressing-room, where Steve Harmison’s rattling of the Australian batsmen, and Brett Lee’s impressive spell of reverse-swing, were being beamed in live from Worcester.”Lee bowled really well,” said Bopara. “He got it swinging both ways, and that is a lethal combination if you get it right. Hopefully it will not happen at Cardiff, but if it reverses for them then it will reverse for us. But there are not many ways you can work on reverse swing as a batter. You have to let your natural instinct take over. If you are an international batter, then you should be good enough to cope with it.”Bopara has at least had his recent tussles with Fidel Edwards to prepare him for Australia’s extreme pace, while his own memories of Cardiff are pleasant, having scored a century for Essex – against Simon Jones among other bowlers – on a previous visit in 2006.”I enjoy playing there,” he said. “It is a decent deck which turns as well, which is helpful. I scored a hundred three years ago, when Jones was reversing it towards the end of the day. He bowled with good pace, and when it started reversing it did seem a lot quicker.”

Celtic struck gold on Virgil van Dijk

When Celtic signed a 21-year-old Virgil van Dijk for a mere £1.74m back in the summer of 2013, many of the Parkhead faithful may not have even heard the centre-back’s name before, let alone been aware of the potential he possessed.

However, after an extremely impressive debut campaign in which the defender featured in all but two of the Bhoys Scottish Premiership fixtures, helping his side keep a whopping 20 clean sheets and chipping in with five goals and one assist on the way to the league title, Hoops fans were certainly well aware of the youngster’s ability before too long.

The former FC Groningen man went on to have another fantastic season at Parkhead the following year, scoring four goals, registering six assists and helping his side keep 21 clean sheets over his 35 league appearances, in addition to scoring a further six goals in the club’s various cup competitions – taking his total haul to ten goals and six assists in 2014/15.

As was perhaps to be expected after these two exceptional campaigns, the 6 foot 4 centre-back then began to attract a great deal of interest in the summer transfer window, with Southampton eventually coughing up £13m in order to prise the defender away from Glasgow.

And, while this may well seem a low figure when taking into account, just three years later, Liverpool paid a world record £75m to bring the Netherlands international to Anfield, Celtic must nevertheless be praised for being the side who took a chance on the centre-back.

Indeed, the Hoops still made a handsome profit on the player who Jurgen Klopp dubbed an “outstanding” talent, and are still undoubtedly benefitting from the path that the £49.5m-rated man blazed upon his departure from Parkhead.

The example of 30-year-old van Dijk is a tactic that the Celtic board will certainly use when attempting to convince a transfer target of a move to Glasgow, something that is priceless to the club.

Ponting looking beyond Border's record

Ricky Ponting is 25 runs from becoming Australia’s leading scorer and the third most prolific in Tests, but he has greater team pursuits to achieve this week in Birmingham

Ricky Ponting is 25 runs from becoming Australia’s leading scorer and the third most prolific in Tests, but he has greater team pursuits to achieve this week in Birmingham as his side attempts to level the Ashes series. Ponting starts the match sitting on 11,150 and while Allan Border’s 15-year-old national mark is the initial target, the current captain wants much more.”Twenty-five runs is not what I am after in this game,” he said. “I am after a big score.”Ponting opened the series with 150 in Cardiff but managed 2 and 38 at Lord’s when the record seemed set to fall. “I have known about it since the beginning of the series,” he said. “Things came up on the board during the first Test, given I went past 11,000 and all of that stuff. So I have had a rough idea, but I have not thought about it or focused on it at all. I have bigger fish to fry than that right at the moment.”As captain, Ponting has become so important to his young team that he can act as a barometer for their success. When he scores heavily the side can breathe easily, but when he fails they are often left gasping. Only once since becoming the leader in 2004 has he registered a century and Australia have lost, with the blemish coming against South Africa in Melbourne late last year.Seventeen hundreds have resulted in wins or draws as captain and have boosted his run tally to the sort of numbers only the true greats can achieve. Sachin Tendulkar currently leads with 12,773 in 159 games while Lara reached 11,953 in 131 matches. Ponting, whose average of 56.31 beats all but Garry Sobers in the top 20, will play his 134th Test on Thursday, 22 fewer than Border managed during his 16-year career.”Hopefully it comes,” Ponting said of the record. “It would be nice to get it out of the way in the first innings of this game and put that behind us.”Michael Clarke, the vice-captain, said Ponting was somebody everyone in the team looked up to. “If anyone deserves to overtake Allan Border, it’s Ricky Ponting,” he said. “He’s been an amazing player for such a long time in all forms of the game, in all conditions around the world, to me that’s a sign of great players. I see Ricky as one of the greatest players I’ve played with, and one of the greatest players to play the game.”Ponting missed the tour match against Northamptonshire over the weekend and his time off included attending the first birthday of his daughter Emmy. “A couple of days away from cricket is always nice when we have been as busy as we have been,” he said. “It has normally worked pretty well for me when I have had a break, I have generally played okay. The break actually came at a good time for a lot of us.”Australia experienced similar stress during the 2005 tour, a series which started to turn when Ponting won the toss and bowled in the second Test at Edgbaston. England raced to 407 on the first day and eventually sealed a two-run win that grew into a 2-1 victory.Ponting, who has lost both coin tosses in this series, said the decision of four years ago would not influence him on Thursday morning. “I will do what I think is right to do on the day,” he said. “There might be overhead conditions to tell us what I should do, which was what I did in 2005. No, it won’t have any bearing on it.”He said Australia relished the situation of being behind and would enjoy clawing their way back into the contest. “I think we all do,” he said. “Australian teams always do that and that was the pleasing thing that came out in the second half of the Lord’s Test. We had been comprehensively outplayed on the first two days but the way we fought out the last couple of days, it said a lot about the Australian spirit.” They feel they have something to prove over the next week.
