Despite having an average squad age of 26.1 according to Transfermarkt, Southampton’s two senior goalkeepers Alex McCarthy (31) and Fraser Forster (33) are two of the club’s four oldest players in their squad.

With this in mind, it’s not surprising to hear that they have been linked with a transfer move for a young goalkeeper that could become Southampton’s next long-term shot-stopper.

What’s the news?

It has recently been reported by TEAMtalk that Southampton are showing an interest in Ajax goalkeeper Charlie Setford.

The report also claims that the 17-year-old, who apparently grew up as a Saints fan, has a number of other Premier League clubs keeping an eye on him as well.

Must swoop

As a product of Ajax’s youth academy, the teenager, who is currently valued at just £90k according to Transfermarkt, has made a total of 12 appearances for the Dutch club’s youth sides, keeping two clean sheets in the process.

This season has seen Setford make three league appearances for Ajax’s U21 side in which he has managed to make a total of eight saves.

The youngster has also been on the bench for nine of Ajax’s Eredivisie games, showing how close he is to the first team at such a young age.

On the international stage, 6 foot 3 Setford has played in four friendlies for England’s U18 side after pledging his allegiance to England over the Netherlands where he was born.

Based on the above, it appears the teenager possesses plenty of potential. Thus, this could be a dream deal for Gao Jisheng to complete at a low price on a player that could grow and develop to have a big future at St. Mary’s as Hasenhuttl’s perfect long-term replacement for either McCarthy or Forster.

With The Athletic reporting back in August that McCarthy has put pen to paper on a new deal at the south coast club, it seems as though Setford may have to wait a few years if he does join Southampton before he can become their first-choice goalkeeper.

But with Forster’s current contract at the club set to expire in the summer, his potential exit could give Setford a place in Hasenhuttl’s squad to start competing for the number one spot. That would be an ideal solution for all parties.

Many Southampton fans have criticised the performance of Adam Armstrong in their 2-2 draw with Leicester City in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team found themselves pegged back not once but twice by the visitors with goals from Jonny Evans and James Maddison after Jan Bednarek and Che Adams had given them leads in the first half.

It was another frustrating night for Armstrong, who could not get himself on the scoresheet once more, meaning that he has still only managed to net two goals so far this season.

The striker lost out on four of his duels and only managed to conjure up one shot in the game, while he also lost possession of the ball 11 times (SofaScore).

Leeds United have been handed a transfer boost over Sassuolo star Jeremie Boga amid speculation that they were interested in signing him.

What’s the story?

The Daily Mail had claimed over the summer that Marcelo Bielsa’s side had shown an interest in signing the Ivory Coast international, who was previously on the books at Chelsea in his earlier years.

Now, Italian publication Calciomercato claim that Boga is set to leave Sassuolo in the summer of 2022, and has made it clear that he will not be signing a new contract (his current deal comes to an end in 18 months time).

It’s also suggested that instead of losing him on a free, Sassuolo are ready to accept a much-reduced price in order to get some sort of transfer fee in for him.

Shades of Patrick Bamford

Given his previous ties to Stamford Bridge when he was a youngster, and failing to make the grade there, there are some similarities between Boga and Bamford.

What has never been in question, however, is the Ivorian’s ability.

His former coach at Chelsea, Michael Beale, said: “The most unique talent and I’m talking in a window of being 13/14 and he just beat the other team possibly on his own is a young boy called Jeremie Boga.

“He just beat teams on his own, such a lovely boy. I thought wow, this boy is a supreme talent. he can stop and go and over three or four yards, he can just drift past you.”

As per Whoscored, Boga averaged an impressive 3.2 dribbles per game in Serie A last season, which was higher than any Leeds player, even Raphinha (1.9).

He also managed 1.2 shots per game (that would rank him just outside the top five among Bielsa’s current squad), while he boasted a whopping 89.4% pass accuracy (the highest of any player that started more than five times for the Whites).

This campaign has been similarly prolific, with Boga averaging more dribbles than Raphinha while boasting more key passes per game than Bamford too.

And, speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel on Youtube, Conor McGilligan talked up the prospect of Boga arriving at Elland Road and the impact he could make.

He said: “It looks like Boga has been a massive hit with Sassuolo since moving from Chelsea, I believe it was back in 2018. He can play anywhere along the frontline, he’s fast and he’d bring a real variety to Leeds’ attacking play.”

If reports are to be believed and Sassuolo would accept a cut-price fee for the £18m-rated flier, then Leeds should be all over it.

Era uma antiga reivindicação dos clubes, este ano limitados a inscrever 28 jogadores, independentemente da idade. Acima de tudo, é uma medida adequada, especialmente num ano em que a pré temporada não vai durar mais do que 15 dias, aumentando o risco de contusões. Além disso, vai permitir que o Estadual, cada vez mais irrelevante, sirva pelo menos para que treinadores possam dar experiência e avaliar os jovens talentos, reforçando os elencos para os torneios ao longo do ano, no sacrificante calendário brasileiro. Será uma nobre porta de entrada da garotada no time principal. Um exemplo que poderia se espalhar por outros estados.
