Dusan Vlahovic: Conte’s dream Spurs signing?

Dusan Vlahovic is among Tottenham Hotspur’s top targets for January and he is surely a player that Antonio Conte would love to sign…

What’s the word?

According to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, the Italian head coach will sit down with sporting director Fabio Paratici to discuss their plans for the winter transfer window, in which the Fiorentina striker is expected to feature in talks.

Spurs have regularly been linked with a move for the Serbia international and it seems he will once again be a hot topic of conversation next month.

La Viola are thought to be asking for a fee in the region of €60m (£51m) and €70m (£56.7m) but that could decrease by €10m (£8.5m) by the summer.

Conte’s dream signing

Vlahovic would be something of a dream for Conte as he seeks to bolster his thin-looking frontline. Indeed, he only has Harry Kane to call upon, meaning he is restricted in two ways.

The first is the fact that he does not have an alternative to his out-of-sorts striker, who has bagged just once in the Premier League all season and secondly, he does not have another option to go to his Inter Milan title-winning formation of 3-5-2.

Vlahovic is scoring for fun in the Serie A at the minute, so he would certainly be an intriguing option – the 6 foot 3 marksman bagged a brace at the weekend to make it 17 goals from 18 appearances this campaign, adding to his 21 goals last term.

The 21-year-old talisman has earned substantial praise as a result of his fine goalscoring form, ranging from Italian football expert Conor Clancy deeming him to be a “complete number nine” to football talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbing him “the Serbian machine.”

Conte has had a history of having big physical goalscorers in his side, including Romelu Lukaku at Inter and Diego Costa at Chelsea, so it’s easy to see why he would be keen to sign Vlahovic this winter.

As such, Paratici could well land his manager a dream signing with a move for the £45m-rated forward next month. The club should do all they can to appease the head coach. On the above evidence, Conte needs a player like Vlahovic.

Vettori and Tuffey rattle Pakistan

New Zealand claimed control of a rain and bad light-hit opening day in Wellington, reducing Pakistan to 161 for 6 by stumps

The weather took time to clear up and New Zealand took time to wake up, but by the end of a shortened, disrupted first day at what was the Basin Reserve’s 50th Test, both had taken firm hold of this match.Incessant rains over the last few days had forced both sides to practice indoors in the run-in and a wet outfield delayed the start until lunch. Overcast conditions, a pitch only just uncovered and some bounce quickly lulled Daniel Vettori into sending Pakistan in after winning the toss. And after an unusual first bout of Pakistan control, New Zealand struck back to leave Pakistan at 161 for 6, bad light stopping play early.Pakistan made two changes to their batting order after the limpness of their first Test display, bringing in Salman Butt and Misbah-ul-Haq to solidify their spine. But the inherent timidity in their senior players – and the ineptitude of some – surfaced again, as they lost the opportunity of a rare opening platform. A familiar story of uncertain prods outside off, awkward encounters with short balls, airy swishes and brain-dead shots unfolded thereafter, 60 for none dwindling to an inadequate first day total. On balance New Zealand deserved their reward, if only because they came back so well after Butt and Imran Farhat had made Vettori’s decision to bowl first look misguided early. Whether Vettori himself would have expected to end up with three wickets on a pitch offering as much turn as an ice-rink might to an early 90s Anil Kumble is open to question, but the spark for the revival was provided by the pacemen.Things had looked difficult more than halfway into the afternoon session. First up, everyone seemed to agree that there would be mischief in the air and pitch. There wasn’t. Chris Martin and Daryl Tuffey – looking every inch a man returning to Tests after nearly five years – had been tight, nothing more. Nothing moved off the pitch and the bounce was true and good. Not that it made much of a difference to the openers, as roused as two turtles on Valium.Carefully, reluctantly, they battled through, the odd boundary signaling growing comfort, but they never broke away decisively. A nervy equilibrium had been reached by the time they put on a second fifty stand in six Tests as a combination; they have a century partnership as well, which in Pakistan’s context makes them Haynes-Greenidge-esque. It had taken time – the first hour produced 32 runs and the 50 came up just before the second drinks break in the 24th over – but the situation was quite dory, if not entirely hunky. It was only after that break, however, that New Zealand finally got with it. Martin, Tuffey and right-arm blogger Iain O’Brien may not match Shane Bond for impact, but they are persevering, under-rated men. Having bowled either the wrong line or length initially, they returned to more basic plans. Tuffey went short, and O’Brien reaped the benefit, Butt pulling loosely straight up to the skies. Fear – and Vettori – now took hold, as the captain lodged himself at one end, and let the pacemen relish the right lengths at the other. In one over came two realisations; Farhat remembered first that he is not perhaps, after all, an international batsman of any quality, lazily cutting to slip. And then, that Vettori’s arm ball is deadly, as he trapped Mohammad Yousuf. As is the way, the ball suddenly began to swing and cut a little, though perhaps that was because both O’Brien and Tuffey hit proper lengths. In a move that confirmed many sad things about Pakistan, bluntest among them that none of their senior batsmen had the guts to front up at that spot, Umar Akmal was thrown in at one-down. Reports from New Zealand yesterday suggested that all senior batsmen had refused to move there, so Umar, presumably, was offered for sacrifice. He was a changed man and O’Brien was just about to have him for brunch, leaving him rooted with movement and surprising him too often with bounce, before tea rudely intervened.Umar sped along after tea, like some crazy, brave firefly glowing madly but always in danger of going out. Just when he seemed to be settling, however, Tuffey undid him with a peach that hit off. As the bowlers continued to probe, fear was replaced by stupidity, as two men supposedly more experienced holed out to shots that should condemn at least one of them. Faisal Iqbal will wonder which God he ever upset if Pakistan continues to think Shoaib Malik worthy of more Test opportunities than him; Malik’s slap to mid-off should, ideally, put an end to that farce.Just before bad light intervened, there was enough time for Misbah to prove again that all the world’s MBAs and domestic experience cannot iron out his tendency to getting out at the worst possible time, in the worst possible way. Vettori would have been smiling anyway at the way the day turned, but Misbah’s ugly sweep would have left him laughing.

England take series after Durban washout

Rain forced the final one-day international at Durban to be abandoned and handed England their first limited-overs series victory in South Africa

The Bulletin by Andrew McGlashan04-Dec-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAndrew Strauss gets his hands on the one-day series trophy after rain washed out the final match•Getty Images

It’s not how Andrew Strauss would have wanted to lead England to a bit of history, but he’ll gladly take it after rain forced the final one-day international at Durban to be abandoned and handed the tourists their first limited-overs series victory in South Africa. There was never a realistic chance of any action at Kingsmead. Hopes were briefly raised when the covers were removed at around 2.30pm, but the forecast rain soon returned to blanket the city in the dank, grey atmosphere that has been in place for most of the past week.As well as their first one-day success in the country, England have also become just the second team to beat South Africa on home soil in a bilateral one-day series after Australia managed it twice. That is a notable achievement for Strauss and Andy Flower considering that a little over two months ago they were turned over 6-1 by Australia.”It’s a big step forward for the group,” Strauss said. “To be only the second team to win out here is an achievement to be proud of. The players had to buy into trying to play a slightly more attacking brand of cricket and at the same time to up our fielding and to be more consistent with the ball.”I think the guys have enjoyed having the shackles taken off them to a certain extent. A lot of our one-day cricket over the last few years has been played like men under a lot of pressure. A lot of the players were under pressure, playing for their places and because the results weren’t very good.”It’s encouraging to know we are going in the right direction but I’d be the last person to say we’re the finished article.”The turnaround began at the Champions Trophy and has continued over the last three weeks. Playing in South Africa suits England’s new brand of one-day cricket and their next challenge in that format be to adapt to different conditions in Bangladesh in February. They are unlikely to find pitches with pace and bounce at the World Cup in 2011 so the next phase of their development is to show they can combat spin attacks of sluggish, turning pitches.Even though only three matches were actually played, this series success can still go down as one of England’s finest one-day performances in recent times, on a par with beating Sri Lanka in their backyard in 2008. At Cape Town they showed they still have the capability to pull out a shocker, but to cancel out that 112-run defeat, both their victories were by convincing seven-wicket margins – a run-chase of 251 that would previously have been beyond them at Centurion, and a victory set up by James Anderson’s bowling at Port Elizabeth.England’s 4-0 victory against South Africa at home last year is often pulled out when talking about impressive performances, but that was against a visiting side that had achieved their main target of a Test series victory and were ready to go home. This time there were early points to be scored – that’s the advantage of holding the one-dayers first – and England have done more than enough to quieten the hosts who were quite happy to make some bombastic statements in the build-up. The hosts certainly haven’t lived up to the hype.”Our next one-day series is in India where the [2011] World Cup is going to be played,” Graeme Smith said. “Hopefully by then we will have a fully-fit squad and a squad which has developed from here.”There’s a break now and there will be a few new faces in our [Test] squad,” he added. “The last two years have been really terrific for us in Test cricket and we want to carry it on. England have an Ashes-winning squad so it bodes well for a good series.”Attention now turns to preparation for the Test campaign. England head to East London for two two-day matches against a South African Invitational XI, where they will be joined by the Test-squad members who have been with the Performance Squad in Pretoria. South Africa, meanwhile, will reconvene in Potchefstroom on December 11 for a three-day camp before heading to Johannesburg ahead of the opening Test at Centurion. The battle is just hotting up.
