Everton want to offload three players

Fabian Delph is among a trio of players that Everton are hoping to sell in January, according to French journalist Santi Aouna.

The lowdown

The England international joined the Toffees from Manchester City ahead of the 2019/20 season in a deal worth an initial £8.5m. He has played just 36 games for the club since, having been hit with a succession of injuries which have sidelined him for nearly 50 matches in total.

Everton generated only £14.4m through player sales and loan fees in the summer as they struggled with Financial Fair Play requirements.

The latest

Aouna, a journalist for French publication Foot Mercato, tweeted that ‘Everton would like to get rid of several players’ after the turn of the year.

He identified three of those who could be set for the exit door – Delph, left-back Lucas Digne and striker Cenk Tosun.

The verdict

Delph is probably the most surprising inclusion in Aouna’s list. Digne has reportedly fallen out with manager Rafael Benitez, and Everton have already lined up a potential replacement in the form of Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Meanwhile, Tosun is on the periphery at Goodison Park, having played just six minutes of football since he returned from injury at the start of November.

On the other hand, Delph has started three of the last seven matches for which he has been available, indicating that he is regarded as a valuable squad player by Benitez, and has won plaudits for his ‘excellent’ contribution in recent weeks.

Based on the players’ Transfermarkt valuations, though, they could bank around £37m from the sales. Perhaps that’s the overriding reason for Everton apparently wishing to get that trio off their books once and for all.

In other news, could this Everton ace also head for the exit door?

Faisal Iqbal confident of improved performance

Pakistan are confident they can bounce back to level the series against Australia in Sydney in the New Year’s Test, due to begin on January 3

Pakistan are confident they can bounce back to level the series against Australia in Sydney in the New Year’s Test, due to begin on January 3. The tourists lost the first Test in Melbourne by 170 runs, their tenth defeat in a row to Australia, but they are notoriously slow starters. The pitch at the SCG looks surprisingly green two days out from the Test, but conditions are warm and muggy, conditions to which Pakistan may well be suited.Though the grass probably won’t last, the surface has for some years not been as spin-friendly as it once was. Pakistan will make changes though most questions revolve around the nature of their bowling attack; they were hamstrung in Melbourne by an injury to Danish Kaneria, but erred according to many in selecting Abdur Rauf over Umar Gul. There has been talk of two spinners playing, but word around the Pakistan camp seems tosuggest they may not go that way.”I think there might [changes] be but we will decide tomorrow,” Faisal Iqbal said. “Hopefully Kaneria will play. The best person to ask is the captain. Whether we play two spinners depends on the captain.”Pakistan struggled to put together significant partnerships in Melbourne and a number of their batsmen failed to develop useful scores and starts into something more substantial. Iqbal was one of those in the second innings, getting out when set on 48. That intensified the Younis Khan situation; Pakistan’s tour management and captain were keen to have the former captain called out ahead of Sydney, but the selection committee and board have not yet come to a decision, thus ruling out a surprise Younis return for the second Test.Iqbal has filled in at No. 3 and his own position was likely to come under scrutiny if Younis had returned. “If Younis comes it will be a bonus or the team because he is one of the best batsmen in Pakistan cricket for a long time,” Iqbal said. “I’ve always been a team man for as long as I have been playing, whatever number I play at. I always did my best, at opening, No. 3, 4 or 5 and I try to do whatever job is given to me.”Mohammad Yousuf had warned in the immediate aftermath of the first Test that the rise of Twenty20 cricket, and Pakistan’s natural inclination towards it, would eventually hurt the country’s Test and ODI progress. The implication was that the batsmen were unsuited to the longer form of the game. Iqbal said it was up to the individual to work out how best to adapt between the formats.”You need to think about the games, you need to sort yourself out quickly whichever form of the game you are playing in,” he said. “At the end of day we’re all professionals and we have to play all forms of cricket, even the shortest form. You have to try your best to settle in. Definitely if you play the shorter form of the game, you need to learn about other forms – you need to change, be quick for short forms and have patience for Tests.”But he was confident Pakistan could learn from their errors in Melbourne and come back hard. “The team is doing well and the guys are shaping up well after the first Test. It was a good learning experience for us. Definitely we can bounce back. Pakistan has always been like that. Whenever we lose a Test, we go hard in the next Test and that is how the team works. Guys are really focused and we’ll be working hard today and tomorrow.”

– Ninguém do Corinthians me procurou, e estou aguardando.

NUFC: Magpies eyeing Tagliafico

An update has emerged on Newcastle United’s interest in Ajax gem Nicolas Tagliafico…

What’s the talk?

According to Sky Sports journalist Matteo Moretto, both the Magpies and Chelsea are both looking into the possibility of a swoop for the Eredivisie full-back.

The report claims that he will be allowed to leave the Dutch giants in the January transfer window and he could be on his way to England.

Major issue

The left-back position has been a major cause for concern this season and the signing of Tagliafico can solve this problem for Howe, which is why Newcastle must seal a deal for the Argentine international.

Jamal Lewis is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, after finally being given a chance following Steve Bruce’s exit from the club, and no one else has managed to perform well in that area of the pitch.

Javier Manquillo was given the nod against Manchester United earlier this week and produced a woeful performance, although it could be somewhat excused by the fact he is a right-back by trade.

Howe should not be forced into playing a right-footer at left-back and this highlights why this is a position that needs to be addressed in January.

Matt Ritchie has averaged an unimpressive SofaScore rating of 6.66 in the Premier League, showing that he has not been able to perform to a good standard consistently.

Tagliafico, meanwhile, has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.17 or higher in each of his four full Eredivise seasons for Ajax. This suggests that the £44k-per-week gem is able to put in excellent displays week-in-week-out, which could make him a reliable option for Howe to call upon at left-back, solving their key problem.

Former Premier League forward Kevin Campbell previously hailed the gem when asked if he would be a good addition to Leeds’ squad. He told Football Insider:

“He is a top-quality player. He’s got lots of experience in the Champions League and on the international stage so I think it would be a smart signing.”

It is now down to Howe to ensure that Newcastle are able to beat Chelsea, or whoever else wants Tagliafico, to his signature in order to bolster his squad in January.

The 29-year-old could then compete alongside Lewis for a spot in the team when the Northern Irishman is back from injury and Manquillo and Ritchie will not be needed to play.

AND in other news, Howe must work his magic with NUFC dud whose value has plummeted £8.1m in 2 years…

Plenty of life left in dead rubber

Attention turns to personal battles for the third Test between Australia and Pakistan in Hobart

The Preview by Osman Samiuddin in Hobart13-Jan-2010Match FactsThursday, January 14
Start time 1030am (2330 GMT)The Kamran Akmal affair drags on, with the wicketkeeper staying in the limelight after his awful performance in Sydney•Getty Images

The Big PictureIt is in dead rubbers that the basis of cricket as an individual sportbecomes clearest. But for the grace of Pakistan everyone would’ve come toHobart much happier; the series is gone and with it the prospect of a goodend to summer. Now attention turns to personal battles of form and there is enough to this Test to keep it sprightly. To Pakistan first and who would have thought dropping a wicketkeeper whodropped four chances in the last Test – and it wasn’t a one-off – would beso difficult? Not least of the confusion surrounding l’affaire de Kamran,as it will now be remembered, has come from the Pakistan camp itself; justas coach Intikhab Alam was definitively ruling him out on Tuesday, Kamran Akmal, definitively, was ruling himself in to an Australian newspaper. He was finally ruled out as Pakistan, surprisingly, announced their playing XI a day before the Test. But the matter has overshadowed a number of other issues, namely thecontinuing failures of Faisal Iqbal and Misbah-ul-Haq in the middle order.Changes have been made and Shoaib Malik and Khurram Manzoor are back in but sending back Fawad Alam, who represents a future – in whatever form and shape – was a poor choice. Mohammad Aamer is back as well to give Pakistan, finally, it’s first-choice attack andthat is something that just hasn’t happened in recent years. In all, there will be enough new faces from Sydney so that Pakistan are likely to have a fresh, energetic feel to them. They will be keen to prevent a 12th successive loss and a fourth successivewhitewash against this particular opponent.Australia are far more settled. Such messes they don’t oftenfind themselves in and when they do, they are generally quieter and handleit with greater grace and coherence. Still, there are little nigglingthings that don’t quite sit right about their line-up just yet.A lack of runs from their middle order is chief among them. Ricky Ponting,Michael Clarke and Marcus North have two fifties each from six Tests thissummer and the first two, at least, should be doing much more than that.Neither has looked particularly out of form, but that in itself can be agreater worry than being out of touch, as North appears to be. Somewickets for Peter Siddle would go down nicely as well, though his presencehas never been a non-threatening one.In the bigger picture this Test may not matter much, but within it therewill be enough players for whom it matters a great deal and that makes forcompelling viewing.Form guideAustralia WWWDW
Pakistan LLDWL
Watch out for…Shane Watson was the Test find of the year for Australia in 2009and he started the new year in style with 97 at the SCG. In his five Teststhis summer, Watson has collected 579runs at 72.37. His quick scoring at the top of the order has been akey to Australia’s positive results, even if scores of 96, 89, 93 and 97have made him a tragi-comic figure. This will be Watson’s first Test atBellerive Oval, where he started his first-class career in 2000-01, and it was his home ground until he moved back to Queensland in 2004-05.Who else but the wicketkeeper? Pakistan’s handling ofthe Kamran Akmal/Sarfraz Ahmed issue has been abysmal and inept. Onwicketkeeping form alone Akmal, who is 28 today, should have been dropped long ago, but hisbatting has kept him alive. Sarfraz is a safe keeper and though not asgame-changing with the bat, he is no mug either, as success on an A tourto Australia last year proves. His debut tomorrow means it is the first time since October 2004 that anyone other than Akmal has put onthe wicketkeeping gloves for Pakistan in a Test match.Team newsThe only change for Australia is the return of Simon Katich, who missedthe Sydney Test with an elbow problem. Phillip Hughes flew home to Sydneyon Tuesday, having been released from the squad, leaving Clint McKay toserve as 12th man for the fourth consecutive match. Marcus North retainedhis place despite struggling for form this summer.Australia 1 Shane Watson, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Marcus North, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8Mitchell Johnson, 9 Nathan Hauritz, 10 Peter Siddle, 11 Doug Bollinger.Pakistan have made four changes to the line-up thatimploded in Sydney. Misbah and Iqbal are out, with Malik and Manzoor the beneficiaries.Aamer is fit again and has replaced Mohammad Sami, andSarfraz has come in for Akmal.Pakistan 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Salman Butt, 3 Khurram Manzoor, 4Mohammad Yousuf (capt), 5 Umar Akmal, 6 Shoaib Malik, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 8Mohammad Aamer, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Danish Kaneria, 11 Mohammad AsifPitch and conditionsHobart is renowned as a swing bowler’s paradise and if the conditions areovercast that is often the case. However, just as often there are big runsto be had and Ricky Ponting was expecting a surface on which his attackwould have to work extra hard for their rewards. “It looks like a prettygood wicket now, a fair bit drier than it has been over the last couple ofdays,” Ponting said. “As the state games have been this year, they’ve beenpretty good batting wickets and it’s been pretty hard to bowl sides out,so I’d imagine this might be the same.” The first two days are likely toprovide perfect, mild conditions but there could be showers over the finalthree days of the Test.Stats and trivia It’s 20 years since Bellerive Oval first hosted a Test but this isthe first time the venue has had a Test in the post-Christmas period In eight Tests at the venue, Australia have won six and drawn two -they have never been beaten The ground hosted one of the most memorable Australian Tests in themodern era, when Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer rescued Australia from 5for 126 to chase down 369 against Pakistan in 1999-2000 Faisal Iqbal, Pakistan’s No.3, has scored more runs (97) in thisseries than his opposite number Ricky Ponting (80) Nathan Hauritz is the leading wicket-taker in the series so far with 12 wicketsQuotes”What we have to do down here is not let them get back into the game likewe let them start in Sydney. There’s still a lot of mystery around aboutthem.”Ricky Ponting on the riddle that is Pakistan”There is no doubt that Sarfraz will play.”

Rangers: Club set to offer Hagi a new deal

A major Rangers transfer claim has been made on the future of Ibrox midfielder Ianis Hagi…

What’s the talk?

Gheorghe Hagi has revealed that the Gers are keen on extending his son’s deal in Glasgow to ensure that he remains at the club.

Ianis has been touted with a potential move to Turkish giants Galatasaray, but his father claims that fresh terms at Rangers could be on the cards instead.

He told Romanian outlet Digi Sport:

“I heard, and I think it’s from a reliable source, that Rangers want to renew his contract. Not as it is written in the press here.

“He has played very well and has had an extraordinary and productive year. He is appreciated at the club, and from good sources, I think they want to renew his contract.”

Buzzing

Rangers fans will surely be buzzing with this claim from a man who is an insider on all things Ianis Hagi – given their relation – as it suggests that the club are working on a deal to keep him. Supporters may have been left feeling anxious about his future in Glasgow due to reports linking the midfielder with an exit, but this latest claim appears to quash those fears.

The Romania international is an important member of Gio van Bronckhorst’s squad and keeping him could be a boost heading into the second half of the campaign. He has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 7.10 in the Premiership, showing that he is producing quality displays week-in-week-out for the Gers.

Last term, he produced seven goals and 11 assists in the league as Rangers won the title. This led to effusive praise from then-manager Steven Gerrard, with the ex-Liverpool man saying: “We’re really happy with Ianis Hagi, he’s a joy to work with.

“He’s a student of the game. He’s always looking at areas to improve, whether that be from a physical point of view or tactically or technically. He’s someone you have to drag off the training ground.

“Ianis is always in the analyst department too. He’s never out of the gym, so he’s an absolute dream to work with, very low maintenance. We’re delighted with how he is developing and progressing and we’re happy to have him.”

This highlights why fans will be buzzing with this claim from Gheorghe. They will surely want a player of Ianis’ quality to stay at the club and tying him down to a new deal could ensure that he is still a Rangers player when the window slams shut in a few weeks.

Bengal open their account, Haryana win again

A round-up of the action from the second round of matches in the 2009-10 Vijay Hazare Trophy

Cricinfo staff12-Feb-2010

East Zone

A fine bowling effort led by Ranadeb Bose and a strokeful hundred from Shreevats Goswami handed Bengal their first win in two games, while Jharkhand’s fortunes swung the other way at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. After a reasonably sound start from the Jharkhand openers, Bose vindicated Bengal’s decision to field by dismissing Sachin Prasad for 9. Ashok Dinda quickly removed Ishank Jaggi for a blob to put the skids on the innings. Saurabh Tiwary tried to counterattack with Siddhartha Sinha, but Sayan Mondal dismissed both in the 16th over of the innings, after which survival became the need of the hour for Jharkhand. Rajiv Kumar dropped anchor to score an unbeaten 69, but Bose skittled the rest to ensure that the innings folded under 200. With little scoreboard pressure, Goswami settled for a big innings, and struck 16 fours and a six in an attractive innings. Wriddhiman Saha supported him will with a chirpy 51, and their 133-run stand took their side home with a bonus point.Tripura made Orissa sweat every inch of the way, but the hosts eventually prevailed by two wickets at the Ravenshaw College Ground in Cuttack. Debasis Mohanty was the hero, as he seized the opportunity to bowl first to finish with exemplary figures of 4 for 14 in his 10 overs. Wickets fell at regular intervals and only a fighting 30-ball 45 from Sukanta Reang lifted the score to 199. Orissa’s chase got off to the worst possible start, with Wilkin Mota trapping Bikas Pati in front first ball. Natraj Behera calmed the nerves in the company of Subit Biswal and Halhadar Das, to put his side in command at 120 for 2, before things started to go awry. Mota prised out three, while Tushar Saha accounted for two, as the score sank to 158 for 7. Rakesh Mohanty and Alok Chandra Sahoo then played calm hands to take their side home.

North Zone

Haryana romped to their second successive win with a comprehensive show against Himachal Pradesh in a low-scorer at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium in Rohtak. Hopes of a Haryana win were rather bleak at the halfway mark after they had stuttered along to 188, in the face of some impressive bowling. Ashok Thakur went for just 15 in his spell of ten overs, but the damage was done by left-armer Kuldeep Diwan, who picked 5 for 39. Defending a modest target, Haryana required a strong allround effort, and the opening bowlers – Sanjay Budhwar and Joginer Sharma – produced exactly that. Wickets fell at regular intervals, four of them to Budhwar and two to Joginder, as Himachal folded dramatically for 88 in the 34th over.Punjab outlasted Delhi in a run-fest at the Shah Satnam Ji Stadium in Sirsa. Delhi’s openers gave their side a superlative start, raising 153 in 20 overs before Unmukt Chand fell for a ballistic 59-ball 74. Shikhar Dhawan was equally punitive in his 70-ball 83, but he fell soon after, as Delhi under-achieved in the latter part of their innings. Virat Kohli kept the attack going with a typically stroke-filled 71, but his dismissal in the 42nd over was crucial in letting Punjab claw their way back into the game. Jaskaran Singh picked four scalps in the last ten overs to contain the score – if such a verb can be used in the context – to 338. Karan Goel and Ravi Inder Singh set about the chase, by launching a stable platform for the middle order to charge from. Their 124-run stand was in contrast to the one between the Delhi openers, and came off 140 balls when Goel fell for 68. Ravi Inder blocked one end up, while Mandeep Singh launched a terrific charge in which no bowler was spared. After Ravi Inder fell, two short of a well-deserved hundred, Bipul Sharma walked out and matched Mandeep shot for shot, as 61 runs came in 46 balls. Mandeep’s dismissal at 270 triggered Bipul to up the ante even further as Punjab blasted 72 off 45 balls to finish the game in the final over.Jasvir Singh’s unbeaten 112 obliterated the efforts of Ian Dev Singh who also scored the same number of runs, as Services handed Jammu & Kashmir their second successive defeat at the Tata Energy Research Institute Oval in Gurgaon. After electing to field, Services struck in the very first over, as Imraj Thakur fell to Fazil Mohammed for a duck. After a couple of steady stands, worth 43 for the second wicket and 80 for the third, the J&K innings lost its way. That they managed 232 was down to the efforts of Ian Dev who carried the innings on his shoulders. He hit nine fours and a six off 141 balls before falling in the 48th over. Despite losing their openers early, Services barely broke into a seat, thanks to Jasvir’s calm knock. He was supported well by Yashpal Singh who contributed 63 in a partnership worth 130 that took their side to the threshold. Jasvir stayed on till the end to secure a seven-wicket win.
