England’s women completed a clinical victory over World Twenty20 finalists New Zealand at Chelmsford, wrapping the visitors up for 113 to win the opening Twenty20 international of the tour by 37 runs.The victory was set up by a solid performance from England’s batting line-up, with captain Charlotte Edwards’ patient 46 anchoring the innings after she won the toss and opted to bat first, and the middle order chipping in for a total of 150 for 5. Edwards then used her slow bowlers extensively, with spin accounting for seven wickets.Despite the early loss of Suzie Bates – who was superbly caught by Lydia Greenway at straight midwicket – New Zealand had looked well set to challenge England’s effort with the bat when captain Aimee Watkins and Sara McGlashan combined in a 47-run stand for the second wicket. But once Watkins departed for 24, caught by Greenway as she tried to clear the deep midwicket boundary, England had their opening and continued to pick up regular wickets.Laura Marsh had opened the bowling, and it was Danielle Hazell’s offspin that accounted for Watkins. she got rid of McGlashan two overs later to spark New Zealand’s demise, as they lost eight wickets for 54 runs.After a subdued Sophie Devine had been bowled by Holly Colvin for 9 from 15 balls, Liz Perry and Nicola Browne briefly threatened a fightback as they both cleared the boundary in a stand of 28 in under four overs. But after they were removed in consecutive balls by impressive youngster Danielle Wyatt with the score on 100, New Zealand quickly crumbled.Anya Shrubsole picked up two wickets in three balls, dismissing Rachel Priest and Lucy Doolan, and Greenway then capped an outstanding day in the field with the run-out of Kate Broadmore to go with her four catches. With the match already lost, Maria Fahey charged down the track at Wyatt only to miss the ball completely, Sarah Taylor whipping the bails off in a flash to end the game.England’s innings had been well set-up by a 68-run stand between Claire Taylor and Edwards at the top of the innings. With Edwards anchoring the innings, Taylor played her shots in an aggressive 32-ball 34.Marsh picked up where Taylor left off, improvising with gusto in a cameo that included a Dilscoop over the ‘keeper’s head and a flat-batted swipe over square leg. Despite the loss of Edwards four runs short of a deserved half-century, Greenway and Wyatt kept up the momentum to boost England’s match-winning total.

What’s the latest?

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has revealed a relief for Dan Burn as the former Brighton centre-back is available to be named in the starting XI at St James’ Park.

Matt Targett is ineligible to face his parent club and this has opened up a spot in the team for the ex-Seagulls man to potentially fill.

When asked about who could start at left-back, Howe told The Chronicle: “Dan Burn is an option for us and it’s great that I’ve got a couple of options in that position. Manquillo has done really well at left-back – he came on against Leeds and made a huge impact.”

This comes after the giant defender did not make his Magpies debut against Everton, with the head coach citing a toe injury as the reason behind that decision.

Buzzing

Newcastle fans will surely be buzzing, as this update from Howe indicates that Burn’s issue with his toe is resolved and that he will be able to play from the start against Villa today. He was unable to make the starting XI against the Toffees, which ultimately meant that the Toon Army did not get to see him in action for the first time.

Therefore, they will be delighted by the prospect of seeing him line up in the team this afternoon, albeit in place of Targett at left-back instead of in his more natural central defensive position. He is a proven Premier League performer and his reputation could get fans excited about watching him play.

In the top flight this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.96. Allan Saint-Maximin and Kieran Trippier are the only Magpies players who can better that score, which suggests that he could be one of the club’s top performers if he is able to replicate his Brighton form on Tyneside.

He does have experience playing at left-back, with 46 appearances in that position throughout his career. Graham Potter opted to utilise him a left wing-back at times despite his two-metre frame, and this means the 29-year-old could be a viable option for Howe in that role in place of Targett.

Whilst fans may have to wait to see him towering above strikers at centre-back, they could still enjoy watching him maraud down the flank to support the Newcastle attack.

It is a major boost for Howe as he has Targett, Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett all unavailable, alongside Jamal Lewis, who was left out of the 25-man squad. This means that Burn’s availability has come at a crucial moment for the Toon.

O que esperar dos meninos
O Lincoln está como os demais. Procurando espaço. É briga de meninos com meninos. O titular hoje é um garoto, que é o Vizeu. Dependo dessa resposta para ter uma continuidade. Vamos organizar o grupo da melhor maneira possível. Posso levar o Vizeu para o clássico. Precisamos de alguém pensando mais no meio de campo.Nossa proposta é essa, não podemos cansar todo o elenco. Tem que ver direito tudo o que podemos fazer.

Vou estar no Rio torcendo. Houve uma liberação total de todos aqueles que estavam conosco, afim de que eles pudessem buscar o título. Vou ficar aqui justamente para poder analisar. Tínhamos um trabalho todo elaborado, estamos ingressando um ou outro e hoje foi Paquetá e Rômulo. Já tínhamos programados dois ou três no clássico, não posso ter mais que três para isso. Newcastle United were active throughout the January transfer window as they made a number of additions to their squad.

Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes and Chris Wood all came in to bolster Eddie Howe’s options across the park.

These signings tipped the club over the squad limit in the Premier League and they made the decision to leave Ciaran Clark, Isaac Hayden and Jamal Lewis out of their 25-man list.

Big error

PIF must now avoid making a big error as Hayden is being linked with an exit from St. James’ Park.

Sparta Prague, Basel, Spartak Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sochi are among the European teams reportedly interested in snapping him up as their respective transfer windows remain open for the time being.

Alan Shearer once dubbed him “superb” and he still has plenty to offer. The £41k-per-week machine has averaged 3.0 tackles and interceptions whilst winning 4.6 duels per game. This shows that he is able to regularly win the ball back for his side, whilst he has been reliable in possession in his own half with a pass completion rate of 89%.

He was ruled out for two months at the end of December and it remains to be seen exactly when he will be cleared for action. This injury seemingly influenced their decision to leave him out of the squad but it should not tempt PIF into cashing in on him.

Hayden is an experienced, hard-working, option in the middle of the park and a player the club should be looking to bring back in next season. This is why it would be a big error for the owners to sanction a permanent exit, instead of a loan until the end of the campaign.

The former Arsenal enforcer has over 100 appearances in the Premier League under his belt and still has plenty of years left ahead of him in the top-flight at the age of 26.

Even if Howe does not see him as a player who will be starting on a regular basis next season, he could be useful as a squad option who can come off the bench late in games to see out results and to start when needed due to injuries or suspensions.

This is why PIF must avoid allowing Hayden to depart St. James’ Park on a permanent basis. It would be a big error and one that could negatively impact the squad next season, due to the loss of his experience and defensive nous.

Após entrar na vaga de Kazim e marcar o primeiro gol pelo Corinthians, Júnior Dutra criou expectativa em parte da torcida: será que o substituto de Jô foi encontrado? O próprio jogador, porém, avisou que não é um pivô, e sim “mais de movimentação”. Já o técnico Fábio Carille disse que o atacante pode, sim, fazer a função. Fato é que de pivô, como falso 9 ou pelos lados, Júnior Dutra dá mais opção para o treinador mudar o ataque do Timão.

Na estreia do Paulistão, por exemplo, Júnior Dutra entrou para atuar atrás de Kazim – o Corinthians perdia por 1 a 0 para a Ponte e pressionava em busca do empate. Contra o São Caetano, ele entrou na vaga de Kazim, como referência no ataque.

– Não é achar ou improvisar, o Júnior Dutra já jogou assim várias vezes. Ele joga nas três funções, tanto aberto quanto de “9 falso”, como foi no Japão e em alguns jogos no Avaí no ano passado. Não foi um achado. Quando contratamos, já sabíamos disse – afirmou Carille, que conversou com o atacante e recebeu elogios.

– O Carille já falou comigo, sabe das características. Se precisar, vou dar meu melhor. Não sou pivô que briga com zagueiro. Sou de movimentação. Ele é um treinador inteligente, o melhor, e sabe o que fazer – disse Júnior Dutra.

Enquanto Kazim deixa o ataque mais “emperrado”, Júnior Dutra dá mais mobilidade. Ao entrar contra o São Caetano, ele foi a referência como 9, mas também apareceu pelas beiradas e movimentou-se para abrir espaços para os companheiros.

Foi com essa movimentação que Júnior Dutra apareceu bem para aproveitar bobeira da fraca zaga do São Caetano para marcar e para aparecer no gol de Jadson. Mas como pivô ele também mostrou valor, ao escorar a bola para Camacho, que tocou para Romero fechar o placar.

Kazim, por sua vez, tem como ponto mais forte o papel de pivô, como foi na ajeitada para Jadson abrir o placar. O problema é que ele já está marcado pela torcida, que o criticou mesmo em lances em que o atacante não teve culpa. Os dias de Kazim como titular parecem estar contados…

The reigning champions are on course for the knockout stages again after recording their sixth win in seven games as they chased down a target of 133 in just 11.4 overs.Matt Prior fell for a golden duck, stumped by Nic Pothas off the bowling of slow left-armer Danny Briggs in the first over, but that was as good as it got for the Royals as Brendon McCullum and captain Murray Goodwin went on the rampage.Goodwin smashed 76 from just 35 balls, winning the match with a six off Dominic Cork – the second of his innings – to add to 11 boundaries. McCullum lost little in comparison as he hammered 59 from 33 deliveries with six fours and four sixes, his first half-century in his short stint with the Sharks.At one stage Sussex scored 31 runs from just eight balls as seamer Chris Wood’s second over disappeared for 21 and McCullum hit the first two deliveries of the next from Briggs for six and four.An understrength Royals’ attack had no answer and after picking up just two wins from five games so far they are already struggling to make the knockout stages. Gunn ran through the visitors’ top-order with a career-best 5 for 31 before guiding the run chase home with 37 from 43 balls after England had been wobbling.Sarah Taylor (64) and Heather Knight (42) had formed an excellent platform in pursuit 221 as they added 108 for the first wicket in 26 overs. However, in the next eight overs England lost 4 for 32 as New Zealand hauled themselves back into the match.It needed the cool heads of Gunn and Lydia Greenway to ensure the innings didn’t fall away – with two stoppages for rain increasing the tension – as the pair added an unbroken 83 for the sixth wicket to complete the job with eight balls to spare.”I can’t believe the day I’ve had, it’s been great,” Gunn said. “I’m pleased my family were here to see it. It was tough work, I never thought I’d get it [five wickets] as I haven’t been bowling much recently. Lydia is in great form at the moment, I enjoy batting with her.
