Gordon has saved Everton millions

Everton have had a poor season so far, with the side struggling to climb the Premier League table into a safe position. As a result, they are currently just four points off the relegation zone, however despite the bad form, they have had fresh talent blossom in the team this season.

Demarai Gray joined the side in the summer for a bargain transfer free of £1.7m, and has since become an important player for the Toffees this season, tallying up the second-highest goals scored (6) in the side. Having said that not all of the talent in the team has come from new signings, with one player living out his dream to play for his boyhood club.

Anthony Gordon has become a stand out performer and undroppable asset to the Everton team, with the local lad rising through the ranks of the academy, to become a key player in the first XI.

The 20-year-old made his Premier League debut as a substitute back in January 2020 when he was just 18, then made his debut in the starting XI in the Merseyside derby in June 2020 and by September of the same year, Gordon signed a new five-year contract to secure his future at Everton long term.

Since then the attacker who was hailed a “bright light” by former Scotland manager, Alex McLeish, has come on leaps and bounds, becoming one of the most promising young talents in the Premier League this season.

Gordon uses his position as a winger to make important runs, stretch the opposition’s defence and create chances, including six key passes and three assists for his team, as well as finding himself in the position to have goal-scoring opportunities, with the youngster bagging three goals of his own this season.

With that being said, according to Transfermarkt, when it comes to Gordon’s market value, his progression on the pitch is paying dividends for the club, as his value has soared since he has been given more time on the pitch with his value rising by 515% in just two years, with the player now worth £7.2m as of December 2021, up from just £1.17m in April 2020.

If Gordon can remain on the trajectory he has been on, and even further progress his game at Everton, his value could sky-rocket under the guidance of Frank Lampard as he grows into his role in the team.

Consequently, Farhad Moshiri has not only struck gold with the young talent, but has also saved millions on scouting and signing an impactful attacking player that could have cost the club plenty of pounds.

Tottenham dealt major Conte blow

Speaking to Calciomercato.it TV, journalist Fabio Santini has made a major claim on late Wednesday night concerning big name Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte’s future.

The Lowdown: Conte concerns…

The Italian, appointed last November after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo, has overseen a Spurs resurgence with the Lilywhites now seriously in contention for Champions League football next season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, with a crucial summer ahead, much has been made over whether Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy will give Conte sufficient enough backing to take his side to the next level ahead of a first full 2022/2023 campaign.

Calciomercato also recently lifted the lid on a clause in the Italian’s contract which would allow him to leave at the end of this season despite his deal actually running out in 2023.

Conte has openly hinted at a possible early exit to the press before, with Santini now making a very worrying claim live on air.

The Latest: Santini makes major Conte claim…

Speaking on Calciomercato.it TV, Santini claims the 52-year-old is set to leave Spurs with negotiations ongoing over a move to Paris-Saint Germain, who intend to part company with their current boss Mauricio Pochettino.

“He does not stay in London,” the reporter claimed.

“I know thanks to a source very close to him. And at the moment there is a negotiation with the Parisians.”

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs…

If this claim comes to fruition, there is little doubt it would come as a big blow for Tottenham given there are few managers in world football on Conte’s level.

The ex-Inter Milan boss has won silverware at nearly every club he has been to and you could make the argument Levy would seriously struggle to find a replacement to match Conte’s pedigree.

That being said, with Pochettino leaving PSG in this scenario, Spurs would potentially have a top candidate to succeed Conte ready and waiting.

A report from The Telegraph also recently stated that Levy would be straight on the phone to his former Tottenham manager in the event of Conte’s potential unceremonious exit.

Eric Tindill, the former New Zealand cricket and rugby international, died on Sunday, August 1, at the age of 99 years and 226 days. Tindill was the oldest Test cricketer of all time as well as the oldest surviving All Black.Tindill had become the oldest Test cricketer on November 8 2009, when he overtook Francis MacKinnon’s record of 98 years and 324 days. He played 69 first-class matches for Wellington and five Tests for New Zealand on either side of the Second World War. Tindill also went on to referee in rugby Tests and was an umpire in a cricket Test between New Zealand and England in Christchurch in 1959 alongside Jack Cowie, with whom Tindill had combined to dismiss Don Bradman in his only match against a New Zealand side.A left-hand opening batsman and wicketkeeper, Tindill toured England with Curly Page’s team in 1937. On the way home he had the distinction of catching Bradman off Jack Cowie’s bowling. The match, between New Zealand and South Australia, was played in Adelaide to help cover debts incurred in England. Cowie and Tindill were delighted with their prized wicket, but others reckoned they cost New Zealand Cricket a fortune. Bradman was dismissed for 11 in the opening over on a Saturday morning and thousands of spectators, queuing for entry, simply turned around and left.Tindill also played football and table tennis for Wellington and after retirement he became secretary of the Wellington Cricket Association and a selector for both Wellington and New Zealand. He was inducted into New Zealand’s sports hall of fame in 1995.”Eric was a great servant to sport in this country – and as a double All Black, reached the very pinnacle of sporting performance in this country,” Justin Vaughan, New Zealand Cricket chief executive, said. “His achievements as a player in many sports, umpire and referee, as well as other amazing deeds reads like a Boys Own story. We are unlikely to see the likes of Eric Tindill again, and he leaves behind a very special legacy.”The oldest living Test cricketer now is former South Africa fast bowler Norman Gordon, aged 98 years and 361 days as of today.

Leeds: Journo makes Noa Lang claim

Leeds United could revive their interest in Club Brugge’s Noa Lang, Leeds Live’s Joshua Hobbs writes.

The lowdown

Victor Orta, Leeds’ director of football, reportedly carried out ‘a lot of analysis’ on Lang, only for former manager Marcelo Bielsa to turn down the suggested move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Argentine apparently had concerns about Lang’s contribution off the ball.

Lang, who’s predominantly a left winger but can also play centre forward, has made 42 appearances this season.

He ranks joint-fourth in Club Brugge’s scoring charts with nine, and sits fourth in the Jupiler Pro League assist table with 11.

The Dutchman still has more than three years remaining on his contract and is valued at £19.8million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

Hobbs notes that Jesse Marsch, Bielsa’s successor, has moved away from Bielsa’s man-to-man defensive system and prefers to defend as a unit, and that could make Lang’s supposed shortcomings less of an issue.

He also believes that the 22-year-old, ‘excellent in compacted spaces’, would be well suited in Marsch’s ‘narrow system’.

The move is now ‘more likely’, particularly with Raphinha potentially set to leave Elland Road this summer.

Signing Lang could be part of Leeds’ plan to replace the Brazilian.

The verdict

If Leeds fans are concerned that Lang has only been delivering in a relatively weak league – the Belgian top-flight is the 13th-best in Europe – then they need only look to his displays in the Champions League.

For example, Lang won the Player of the Match award when Club Brugge drew 1-1 with French giants Paris Saint-Germain in September and looked, journalist Zach Lowy noted, ‘like prime Neymar’.

But what about those defensive concerns?

Well it’s true that Lang doesn’t press a huge amount – only 12.81 times per 90 minutes (placing in him just the 16th percentile) – but his numbers for tackles (1.54), interceptions (1.02) and blocks (1.2) are all closer to the average. There’s certainly enough there for Marsch to work with.

In other news, this Leeds transfer target struggled at the weekend.

Taylor wary of dangerous India

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor has said India’s unpredictable run so far in the tri-series made them a dangerous proposition ahead of the virtual semi-final between the two sides on Wednesday

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor has said India’s unpredictable run in the tri-series made them dangerous opponents ahead of the knock-out clash between the two sides on Wednesday. India’s convincing victory against Sri Lanka came in between two heavy defeats, and Taylor was wary of their ability to bounce back from reversals.”I think it almost makes them dangerous, they didn’t play that well against us in the first game, and then they came back and played well against Sri Lanka. Obviously they didn’t play as well as they would have liked to play against Sri Lanka in the last match, that makes them dangerous,” Taylor said.India’s batsmen have had a forgettable time so far in the tournament, crumbling to scores of 88 and 103 in their defeats, but Taylor refused to write them off. “They are a good batting unit. They have played a lot of cricket. I am sure with their experience they will come firmer and we just need to put pressure on them,” he said.”I think every top order has struggled, not just India. We struggled at the top and Sri Lanka had their troubles as well. It [the ball] has done lot of things. I guess their batting is under pressure but I would say even we were under a bit of pressure.”New Zealand’s seam attack ruthlessly exposed India’s frailties outside the off stump in the opening game. Taylor said his bowlers will decide on whether to bounce India’s batsmen, or pitch it up to them, depending on the state of the wicket. “I guess we would have to wait and see how the pitch is like, and see how the bounce is. I think it is a fresh wicket. And most of the wickets that we played on turned a lot more than we expected and then bounced a lot. But since our boys are tall they get a little extra bounce than most. So if it does bounce then we will have to wait and see. If it doesn’t bounce to knee-height then we should pitch it up.”More than the lack of experience in his side, Taylor was concerned that his batsmen had not had a hit for 12 days leading into the game. Their last completed fixture was the defeat to Sri Lanka on August 13, and New Zealand did not bat in the rained-out encounter against the hosts, their only match in the interim period.”Probably when we came in, we did not have a experienced side. That was part of the deal that we wanted to give other guys experience and also to come here, win and play well. Scott [Styris] and I scored runs. But we only scored runs once,” Taylor said. “It is going to be 12 days since we have actually had a bat. There is going to be a little more anxiety probably [because of] the fact that we have not had a bat for 12 days than the actual game itself.”New Zealand have a minor fitness concern leading into the game, with Kane Williamson suffering a bicep niggle. Martin Guptill, who missed the last match, has recovered. “[Martin] Guptill is fit and raring to go. Kane Williamson has got a bit of bicep injury and he will be under observation,” Taylor said. “He did not bowl or throw yesterday. We will have to wait and see how it goes. And if he gets through that, we will just have to wait and see on selection.”
