Seguimos bem colocados – pontuou o treinador.

Leeds hit the jackpot on Raphinha

Leeds United have shown that they are perfectly able to splash the cash in the transfer market since getting promoted to the Premier League.

One player that the Whites were able to bring to Elland Road that has proved to have been an inspired piece of business from the club is Raphinha.

Signed back in September 2020 from French club Stade Rennes in a deal worth £17m, the winger has gone on to make himself a crucial figure for the team.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

With 61 appearances under his belt across all competitions, the Brazilian has found the net 16 times and delivered 12 assists.

In what has undeniably been a difficult season for the Whites, Raphinha has shown what a standout player he is by racking up more goal contributions in the league than any other Leeds player.

Having scored 10 goals and provided three assists, his overall performances have also highlighted what a talent he is.

The 25-year-old has earned himself an overall WhoScored rating of 7.06, making him the highest-rated outfield player in Jesse Marsch’s squad.

To further highlight how much of an attacking dynamo he is, no other Leeds player has been able to match the number of shots on target (19), shot-creating actions (106) or successful dribbles (138) than Raphinha.

In comparison to the rest of the players in the Premier League, the Leeds star has had more shots on target than Manchester City duo Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva – prior to this weekend’s round of fixtures.

In terms of his dribbling, only Allan Saint-Maximin and Emmanuel Dennis have completed more.

With those attacking statistics in mind, it’s easy to see why Joe Cole dubbed the 25-year-old both a “proper talent” and a “real technician” earlier this season.

Back in October 2020, Transfermarkt had the attacker’s market value listed at £16.2m, whereas it now stands at a massive £40.5m, showing a significant increase of 150%.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Leeds and Victor Orta hit the jackpot when they secured their deal for the winger.

Moving forward, with the summer transfer window on the horizon, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see many top clubs across Europe looking to sign the Brazil international, meaning that Leeds could have a challenge on their hands keeping hold of him.

ScorecardGary Ballance, nephew of former Zimbabwe batsman Dave Houghton, announced his arrival on the Zimbabwe cricket scene with a magnificent 135 not out to lead Mid West Rhinos to a two-wicket victory over Mashonaland Eagles at Kwekwe. His innings proved the difference between the sides after Mashonaland Eagles had played the better cricket through the match. Their batting was more consistent, their bowling more accurate and their fielding better but Ballance’s hundred snatched the game from their grasp.Mid West Rhinos asked the visitors to bat first but could not find the bowling strength to take advantage of it. Taurai Muzarabani strove manfully, but the others were not able to keep the runrate in check. They had a lucky break when Friday Kasteni ran out Simbarashe Gupo early on, but the next three batsmen all weighed in with fifties.Cephas Zhuwawo’s 57 off 62 balls gave Mashonaland Eagles a breezy start, but he was overshadowed by Forster Mutizwa’s cameo 50 from 37 balls. Between them Prince Masvaure was more sedate but anchored the innings solidly with 62, helped no end by the generous Mid West Rhinos fielders who dropped several chances.Chasing 248 looked a daunting prospect but Ballance made it look easy. Tottering after two wickets fell quickly for 21, he shared a vital stand of 123 with his captain Vusi Sibanda, who hit a fine 58 off 55 balls.Had Ballance fallen, Mashonaland Eagles would have taken the match but he stayed to the end, hitting another boundary to win the match with three balls to spare in the final over. He faced only 121 balls and hit 12 fours and three sixes.

– Depende do apelo.

Leeds: Noel Whelan reacts to Jesse Marsch claim

Leeds United employee Noel Whelan has hailed Jesse Marsch’s man-management skills following his impressive start to life at Elland Road.

The Lowdown: Marsch talks

Marsch has helped the Whites pull eight points clear of safety over recent weeks after picking up three wins and a draw from the last four games.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The American gave an in-depth interview to talkSPORT from Thorp Arch last week, revealing that his first message to the players was to remain ‘calm’ and that he looked to implement his playing philosophy and mentality on a day-to-day basis.

That has impressed Whelan, who has been full of praise for the 48-year-old when talking to Football Insider.

The Latest: Whelan reacts

Former Leeds striker Whelan, who is now an employee of the club, labelled the work Marsch has done as ‘quite incredible’ and described his approachability as ‘massive’.

“He has got up to speed pretty quickly from where he was and where the players were.

“He’s gone in and changed that around. The players have bought into it. He has probably asked the players, one-on-one, what it is they need as well.

“I think it’s really important that you find out from the players first hand so you’ve got something to go off. He’s one of these men that is open to suggestions and he’s open to the players talking to him.

“I think that’s really important because that is a massive part of the game now, man-managing. Not just a squad, but every individual player as well.

“Their needs, what they need from a training session and the rest they need as well. Rest and recuperation is just as important as the intensity that you’re putting out there on the training ground.

“He’s come in and done a really, really educated job with the players. To do it in such a short space of time is quite incredible. There’s no doubt he has got all the credentials you need to be very successful at Leeds.”

The Verdict: Good signs

Taking over from club legend Marcelo Bielsa with Leeds seriously flirting with relegation was always going to be a huge task for Marsch, however, he has rose to the challenge despite a tough first week.

His message about staying calm appears to have done the trick around the training ground, even if fans have remained anything but calm with dramatic stoppage-time winners against Norwich City and Wolves.

Those four points, gained thanks to strikes from Joe Gelhardt and Luke Ayling, could prove to be the difference come the end of the season, where hopefully, Marsch will be preparing for a first full year in charge as a Premier League manager.

Orissa take control against Baroda

A round-up of the second day of the first round of matches in the Super League of the Ranji Trophy

S Badrinath made 83 as Tamil Nadu opened up a big first-innings lead•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Orissa’s batsmen consolidated the advantage over Baroda provided by the bowlers on the first day at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. Half-centuries from opener Natraj Behera and 19-year-old debutant Govind Podder pushed Orissa to 182 for 3 by stumps. Orissa sauntered along at less than three an over but still finished the day 34 runs ahead of Baroda’s first-innings effort. Their only moments of concern when 22-year-old medium-pacer Ajitesh Argal, a member of the Under-19 side that won the World Cup in 2008, nipped out two early wickets. A 104-run second-wicket stand between Behera and Podder then put Orissa within touching distance of a lead. In the morning, Baroda’s Rakesh Solanki continued a remarkable solo effort, moving from his overnight 44 to end up unbeaten on 87, dragging Baroda from 99 for 9 to 148. He put on 53 for the final wicket with Bhargav Bhatt, who made 6. The second highest contributor in the Baroda innings was Argal, who made 12, coming in at No. 10.At the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu’s strong batting helped tighten their grip over Assam. Opener S Anirudha, son of former Indian captain Kris Srikkanth, compiled an unbeaten 87 and Ranji run-machine S Badrinath made 83 as Tamil Nadu ended the day at 300 for 4, ahead by 116 runs. Anirudha was forced to retire hurt when on 71, with the total at 133 for 2, but he returned at Badrinath’s exit which left Tamil Nadu at 281 for 4. He has a poor conversion rate in first-class cricket, having seven half-centuries and only one hundred, a statistic he will hope to improve when he resumes on Wednesday. The other main contributor was former ICL player R Sathish, who remained unbeaten on 74.Iqbal Abdulla’s career-best score combined with two crucial wickets late in the day from Ramesh Powar put Mumbai in total command at the halfway mark against Saurashtra, who trail by a massive 486 runs at the Bandra-Kurla Complex. Taking advantage of an inexperienced bowling attack along with some overly defensive strategies employed by Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah, Abdulla helped himself to his maiden century, and, if not for the declaration, was comfortably marching towards a double-century.For more on this match, click here.Delhi seized control over its territory on Tuesday, playing the second day of their Ranji Trophy-opener as if it were the first. A flashy show of intent from Virat Kohli (51* off 78, 9×4) ensured that Delhi go in at 89-1. Punjab were only able to add nine to their overnight score, as Praveen Kumar and RP Singh snapped up the remaining four wickets to keep limit them to 288. Praveen finished with 5 for 72, his 13th first-class five-for. Mohammad Kaif’s painstaking 58 from 176 led UP’s reply, but it was case of missed opportunities for the visitors, as four of their top five batsman got starts, but failed to convert them into big scores. Gujarat piled up 379 against Railways, aided by Siddharth Trivedi’s career best 65, before reducing the home side to 64 for 3 at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. Trivedi came to the crease with the score 298 for 8, and promptly set about the Railways bowling. His 65 came from just 57 deliveries, and included 11 fours. He added 78 with Sahil Yadav for the ninth-wicket to give Gujarat the momentum in the match. Trivdei followed up his heroics with the bat by snaring Faiz Fazal and Sanjay Bangar as Railways stumbled to 20 for 3. TP Sing and Yere Goud then prevented any further damage with a 44-run stand.Haryana crawled to 316 against Himachal Pradesh at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Hemang Badani led the way with 65, an innings that contained nine fours and a six, but it was slow going for the batsman, who faced 183 balls. Six bowlers shared the wickets, with part-time left-arm spinner Mukesh Sharma’s 2 for 8 from six overs the best of the bunch. Sanjay Budhwar reduced HP to 36 for 2, but opener Bhavin Thakkar (58) and captain Paras Dogra (12) made sure there would be no more hiccups.

Leeds: Noel Whelan makes Adam Forshaw and Kalvin Phillips claim

Leeds United employee Noel Whelan has made a claim regarding midfielders Adam Forshaw and Kalvin Phillips, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Forshaw out, Phillips back

It has been a case of one in one out at Thorp Arch in recent weeks, with Phillips making a first start since December against Crystal Palace on Monday.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, one man who didn’t feature at Selhurst Park was Forshaw, who will now miss the rest of the season after fracturing a knee cap in training.

That leaves Jesse Marsch with a shortage of central midfielders for the run-in, with Mateusz Klich and Robin Koch playing 45 minutes each alongside Phillips earlier in the week.

The Latest: Whelan’s comments

Whelan, talking to FI, labelled Forshaw’s injury at Thorp Arch as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘disappointing’.

He then added that Phillips is going to ‘have to step up and perform’ for the final five games, labelling his return from the off as a ‘massive plus’.

“Adam Forshaw was so unfortunate to get that training injury.

“He’s been one of the best players, for me, this season – and you can see what a difference he’s made since coming back in.

“It’s disappointing because we could have done with both Phillips and Forshaw. But now Kalvin is going to really have to step up and perform for these last games of the season.

“Everyone knows what is required of them, and Kalvin being back is a massive plus no matter how you look at it.”

The Verdict: Not ideal

Phillips and Forshaw featured together briefly against Southampton at Elland Road, and the duo may well have been Marsch’s first-choice pairing, making the latter’s setback a frustrating one.

That will have to wait until next season, and hopefully, Marsch will be able to find a solution in midfield with Phillips and one other between now and the end of the season.

Koch was Leeds’ worst-rated performer on Monday, as per SofaScore, so perhaps Marsch will go with Klich once again from the off when the Whites take on Manchester City on Saturday.

In other news: Radz and 49ers will now reward Marsch if he keeps Leeds up by moving for 29-goal forward.
