Sangakkara not surprised by West Indies' performance

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has said he was not surprised by the way in which West Indies dominated the drawn first Test in Galle but added the difference in bowling between the teams was an “eye-opener”. West Indies, led by Chris Gayle’s 333, piled up 580 before their bowlers struck to help enforce a follow-on on the hosts. Sri Lanka managed to save the Test but West Indies were also held back by the weather on the last three days.”We were pretty wary about what they could do. The only thing was our attitude probably in the first two sessions which was a bit wanting,” Sangakkara said of his team’s bowling on the opening day. “The first six overs were probably okay although we didn’t make the batsmen play too much. But after that I thought the lines and the lengths we bowled on this track were not good enough for us to put any pressure on them either to get wickets or to cut down on the runs. Chris (Gayle) took a lot of advantage from that and he batted magnificently.””We’ve got understand that it is a good eye opener for us. It’s an example to us the way West Indies were disciplined in their bowling. I thought the attitude of the West Indian bowlers the way they went about their job was very impressive.”Sangakkara admitted Sri Lanka could have put in a better performance with the bat in the first innings where no batsman reached a century even though four managed to get past fifty. “If one batsman can get a hundred, usually a side ends up making 400. Those are the par scores for Test cricket on these tracks and unfortunately we fell about 100 runs short on our first innings at least,” he said.”With the bowling attack we had unfortunately we didn’t have the conditions in our favour apart from the first six overs where there was a little bit of swing. The first two days were the best days for batting and West Indies took maximum advantage of that.”The star for Sri Lanka on the final day was opener Tharanga Paranavitana, who made 95 in nearly three hours, and steered Sri Lanka to safety. “It was a fantastic effort from him,” Sangakkara said. “He quickly adjusted from the first innings and he showed us what a real old -style opener he is in Test cricket to grind away at the opposition and score runs.”The second Test gets underway on November 23 in Colombo.

Tottenham Hotspur: Journalist reacts to behind-the-scenes ‘doubts’ at N17

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes that the uncertainty of Antonio Conte’s future could make potential Tottenham transfer targets think twice about joining the club this summer.

The Lowdown: A managerial switch?

Last month, it was reported that former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino looks set to leave Paris Saint-Germain, meaning that the French giants will be searching for a replacement ahead of next season.

Conte seems to have emerged as a surprising candidate for the job after sources have claimed that the 52-year-old has offered himself to the Ligue 1 outfit.

As a result of this, O’Rourke has suggested that players will feel hesitant in being able to commit to moves if it’s unknown whether Conte will be there ahead of the start of the new campaign, but still expects people behind-the-scenes to be focusing on capturing their targets regardless of the managerial situation.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Conte casting doubts

When asked about how he thinks Tottenham’s transfer business will play out, O’Rourke told GiveMeSport: “Obviously, it’s not great to attract players if there are doubts over the manager’s long-term future, because players want to know that they will be playing under this manager, if he wants to sign them.

“So, that could be the only thing that might put doubts in players’ minds, but I think the recruitment team will be continuing to work away on transfer targets, whatever is going on with Antonio Conte.”

The Verdict: Up in the air

It’s already been reported that the boss is looking at signing six new players during the upcoming transfer window in a bid to rebuild his squad, but that could prove to be a difficult task if the future Spurs stars don’t know who they will be working under.

At this moment in time, things are very up in the air at the club, with the N17 side not knowing whether they will be able to successfully secure a top-four Champions League place, with the opportunity of playing elite European football another huge deciding factor when it comes to new signings choosing their next destinations.

If Paratici and the rest of the Tottenham hierarchy want to start planning for the future, then they will need to gain some clarity on Conte’s intentions moving forward before it starts affecting his team’s performances on the pitch as well as off it.

In other news… Tottenham’s sporting director is reportedly eyeing a surprise move for a player who’s been described as a ‘young Paul Gascoigne’.

KRL go top after innings win

Round-up of the second day of the ninth round of Division Two of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Dec-2010Khan Research Laboratories moved to the top of the table after they beat Quetta by an innings and 171 runs in less than two days at the Khan Research Laboratory Ground in Rawalpindi. Quetta’s miserable season continued, as they followed up their total of 45 in the first innings with 106 in the second. KRL seamers Yasir Arafat and Mohammad Irfan once again did the early damage as Quetta tried to recover from a 277-run first innings deficit. Arafat finished with 5 for 37 in the second innings and nine wickets in the match. Captain Mohammad Wasim had built on the advantage KRL had from the first day, getting to 152 on Monday and helping his team reach a total of 322 for 7 declared. With a game in hand, KRL are almost sure to make the finals. Abbottabad can only equal them on points if they beat Karachi Whites.Double-centuries by Khalid Latif and Asif Zakir put Karachi Whites in control of their match against Abbottabad at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Karachi scored 583 for 3 declared in their first innings and had already reduced the hosts to 60 for 4 by the end of the second day thanks to two strikes from Mohammad Sami, the fast bowler who has played 35 Tests for Pakistan. Khalid had retired hurt when on nought on the first day, and only returned towards the end of the day. On Monday, he hit 26 fours and four sixes to reach 200 not out in just 150 balls. Zakir, who was 106 not out overnight, carried on to score 219. Karachi are still in with a chance of claiming the second slot in the finals. After leading the pack for much of the season, State Bank of Pakistan could see their berth in the finals slip away after they were reduced to 199 for 5 by Pakistan Television at the Marghzar Cricket Ground in Islamabad. Wicketkeeper Gulraiz Sadaf was SBP’s only half-centurion as Pakistan Television seamers Saad Altaf and Mohammad Ali took two wickets each. Pakistan Television weren’t able to add much to their overnight score of 372 for 6 and were all out for 426, which means SBP still need another 78 runs to avoid the follow-on. With Karachi Whites closing in on their points tally, a loss may cost SBP a place in the finals.Peshawar have been set 175 to win by Lahore Ravi in a low-scoring match at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The hosts got themselves back in to the match by bowling Peshawar out for 168, after they had been knocked over for 193 on the first day. But they could only manage 149 in their second innings after collapsing from 119 for 2. Openers Junaid Jan and Abid Ali gave Lahore Ravi a solid start with their contributions of 55 and 43 respectively, but the middle-order could not deal with Riaz Afridi’s seamers and Akbar Badshah’s offspinners. Riaz took a five-for, which gave him nine wickets for the match and took him to the top of the season’s wicket-takers chart. Seamers Abdul Ghaffar and Asif Raza took four wickets each for Lahore Ravi as none of Peshawar’s batsmen got a half-century in their innings.A century by Usman Salahuddin and a half-century by legspinner Saad Nasim at No.8 helped Lahore Shalimar recover and then move into a position of strength against Hyderabad at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. The hosts were at 190 for 6 at the start of the second day, but Salahuddin’s 134 and Nasim’s 75 took them to 355 in their first innings. Salahuddin is now the leading run-getter in Division Two, this season. Lahore Shalimar reduced Hyderabad to 100 for 4 by the end of the second day, with seamers Emmad Ali and Hasan Dar taking two wickets apiece.

McCullum promises 'desperate' show

Brendon McCullum was satisfied with New Zealand’s efforts on the fourth day at the Basin Reserve, as the hosts set Pakistan 274 for victory in what promises to be an exciting finish to the two-Test series

Brendon McCullum was satisfied with New Zealand’s efforts on the fourth day at Basin Reserve, as the hosts set Pakistan 274 for victory in what promises to be an exciting finish to the two-Test series. New Zealand began the day at 9 for 0, and McCullum, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor all chipped in with half-centuries, keeping the New Zealand total moving even as Pakistan made regular breakthroughs, before they were bowled out for 293 at stumps.”It’s set up for what could be a great day of Test cricket,” McCullum said. “[A target of] 270 was what we were looking at, in a day anyway, so regardless of whether we were bowled out or not it’s probably around the score we wanted.”I guess the other option could have been if we had been able to continue at the top of the order and gone on to get 350 in a real hurry. Maybe if Martin, myself or Ross had been able to bat a bit longer, we might have been able to score a bit quicker, but in the end 280 runs in the day sets up tomorrow quite nicely.”The New Zealand bowlers will have to attack on the fifth day, as they attempt to take 10 wickets against an opposition who have the option of playing conservatively, since they are currently leading 1-0 in the series. The seamers are likely to abandon their line-and-length approach from the first innings and bowl more aggressively in their efforts to square the series after two disappointing tours to the subcontinent in recent months.”Everyone in the changing room is incredibly excited about what tomorrow brings,” McCullum said. “Turning up on the fifth day of a Test match not knowing whether you are going to win or lose, and have the opportunity to go on and win is pretty exciting. With where this team is at the moment, I think you’ll see a real desperate show from us tomorrow.”New Zealand’s ambitions of victory, on a pitch that has worn to offer substantial bounce and turn for the slow bowlers, will rest largely on the shoulders of Daniel Vettori. Pakistan offspinner Mohammad Hafeez, in particular, proved that there was plenty for the spinners, as he extracted considerable bite on the fourth evening to pick up the wickets of Jesse Ryder and James Franklin. “I think we saw tonight that the pitch did take some turn,” McCullum said. “I know Dan is chomping at the bit to get the ball in his hand and we’ve got a couple of other bowlers who have performed pretty well in this series. They’re all extremely excited about the opportunity and I know the fielders will be backing them up too.”McCullum also praised his captain for his efforts earlier in the game, when Vettori narrowly missed out on a rare double of five-wickets and a century in the same innings. “I thought he [Vettori] did a really good job in the first innings. He’s never going to run through a team in the first innings; for him it’s more about controlling the run-rate and allowing the seamers to operate from the other end. The fact that he picked up four wickets is testament to how good a bowler he is. Hopefully tomorrow we’ll see Vettori in full cry and us being able to go on to get a Test win.”Pakistan were defensive in their approach today, often employing fielders in the deep instead of pushing for wickets to force a win, until a late burst of scintillating reverse-swing from Umar Gul set the team alight. Gul polished off the New Zealand innings in style, as he troubled all the batsman in his final spell and finished with his second four-wicket haul in the match.McCullum, though, was unsure whether Pakistan would choose to push for their fourth consecutive victory at the Basin Reserve, or opt to secure the series through a more defensive approach. “You’d do well to predict the approach from the Pakistanis. We’ve seen so far in this series that their batting has the ability to be defensive and see off periods of attack from our bowlers, but it also has the ability to fall over if we do get it right. So we have to make sure that the latter is what we come up with. If we can get into their reasonably inexperienced No. 6, 7 and 8 with the ball still new, it gives us our best opportunity.”The visitors had also failed to maintain an acceptable over-rate throughout the day, extending their drinks-breaks well beyond five minutes and strolling languidly in-between overs to slow down play. McCullum though, claimed it had not been a major issue in the New Zealand camp. “I didn’t really notice it. There wasn’t much talk about that. I guess that’s just a bit of gamesmanship on their part.”Pakistan coach Waqar Younis claimed his side were eyeing a 2-0 result on the final day. “The game is pretty even at the moment and we are excited about coming out tomorrow and going for the win.”
