Zimbabwe batsman Tino Mawoyo insists he is ready for the challenge of the World Cup after receiving a surprise call-up to replace Sean Ervine, who pulled out of the squad for the tournament due to personal reasons.”I was both excited and a bit surprised when I got the news,” said Mawoyo. “I was disappointed to have been left out at first just like all the players that have not been included, but despite having been left out I have been working hard all along so I think I will be as ready as the other guys when the World Cup starts.”Mawoyo, an opening batsman who played two one-day internationals against Bangladesh in 2006, has been one of the more consistent batsmen on the domestic limited-overs scene over the past two seasons. He furthered his claims for national selection with some impressive innings in the unofficial Test series against New Zealand in October last year, and his entry to the World Cup squad will also give the team more options at the top of the innings.”There is a slight change in the dynamics of the side as we lost a batsman we could have got some seam from,” explained national coach Alan Butcher. “On the other hand now we have a batsman who is used to opening the batting. I was comfortable with the options we had in that regard but now we have somebody who is used to taking the new ball at the top order and whose natural inclination is to play shots.””Tino has done well to improve on his fitness, as asked to, and he has had some rewards for his hard work,” added Butcher. “He has shed some weight and we can push that along for the next few weeks. He is one of the few specialist openers that we have and we hope he takes this opportunity with both hands and does the job.”

E um dos motivos apontados pelo camisa 9 ao diretor executivo de futebol para provar sua motivação para ficar foram os recém-contratados Régis e Everton.

Autor de três gols em 17 jogos, Diego Souza relatou a Raí que confia na melhora de seu rendimento graças aos dois jogadores que ficaram à disposição depois do Campeonato Paulista. A explicação é simples: ambos jogam abertos (Régis pela direita e Everton pela esquerda) e, na visão do camisa 9, têm capacidade de cruzamentos que facilitarão seu estilo.

Na conversa com o diretor, Diego Souza disse acreditar que o estilo mais ofensivo de Régis, que o técnico Diego Aguirre tem tentado aproveitar utilizando três zagueiros, pode ajudá-lo mais do que ocorria com Militão, que era zagueiro e volante na base antes virar titular na lateral no time principal.

Apesar de ter mostrado até agora uma postura em campo menos aguerrida do que Aguirre gosta, Diego Souza tem bom ambiente no elenco. E, depois da conversa com Raí, o jogador passou a conversar com Régis e Everton.

Vindo do São Bento, clube pelo qual disputou o Campeonato Paulista, Régis não sabia que tinha sido citado por Diego Souza como motivo para vingar no São Paulo. Mas gostou de saber da confiança que o colega teve nele simplesmente vendo seu desempenho em treinamentos e jogos.

– Pô, fico feliz de saber. Não conversamos, acabamos de nos conhecer, mas vi que ele se interessou. Percebo que ele já está pedindo mais para jogar no primeiro pau, para ele chegar. Não era característica dele. Ele falou que ficava do meio para trás. Mas, como eu estarei sozinho, ele vai ficar mais na frente para cruzar no primeiro pau. Temos tudo para fazer bons jogos – disse Régis ao LANCE!, prometendo ajudar o camisa 9.

– Não vou prometer assistência, mas a tentativa vai ter (risos). Nathan McCullum does not bowl a . He says he is working on an unfinished delivery, for which he does not have a name yet. McCullum, however, is certain about his role in this New Zealand side: to defend at all costs. On Friday he will face his biggest challenge against the Sri Lankan batsmen, who read hands better than master palmists. In the absence of Daniel Vettori for the second consecutive match, McCullum has to be New Zealand’s frontline spinner.McCullum’s build-up so far in this World Cup has been patchy. Not once has he delivered a full quota of 10 overs, bring used primarily as a utility bowler rather than a strike option. He has taken only three wickets in five matches at an average of 45, which is better than his career mean of 50. All his wickets have come towards the end of the innings, after the mandatory ball change, and he has failed to ask questions of opposition batsmen. Even spinners from weaker teams – Ray Price of Zimbabwe (seven wickets at 21 each), George Dockerell of Ireland (seven at 27) and Peeter Seelar of Netherlands (seven at 35) – have made stronger impressions than has McCullum.Yet, McCullum could play Sri Lanka with added confidence. He had a brief chat with Sunil Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan’s coach, who dropped in during New Zealand’s training session ahead of the Pakistan match at John Wright’s request. Though the chat lasted barely a few minutes, McCullum was reinvigorated. He realised his thought process about working towards a wicket was similar to what Fernando had in mind. There was not much time to talk technique, but McCullum is bound to utilise the knowledge against Sri Lankans.”I guess it depends on what type of spinner you are and how you work in the team. They perform different roles depending on the type of spinner,” McCullum said of the role of a spinner in modern-day cricket. “As for my role, it is to work hard and try and go for 40-45 off my ten overs, and if I pick up one or two wickets that will do.”McCullum felt his job was no different to that of a Muralitharan, the difference being Murali is a strike bowler. “In the Sri Lankan side, Muralitharan is looked at as a big wicket-taker, but at the end of the day even he has to go for 40-45 runs while he picks up the wickets.” McCullum is not cocky about his strengths. He is modest in fact, and would like to one day pick the brains of Murali and Harbhajan Singh to understand how they do what they do. In the interim he could change his mindset and become a wicket-taker instead of being tamed by batsmen.In the only World Cup match played at the Wankhede so far, New Zealand’s bowlers had to toil to get wickets against Canada, who lost by 97 runs but lasted 50 overs. It was the first time New Zealand had to bowl their complete quota of overs. It was also the only occasion McCullum came close to bowling 10 overs – he finished with 56 for 1 off eight.On Wednesday, Ross Taylor said the absence of Vettori and Kyle Mills would not hurt them because New Zealand had enough men of character to step up. McCullum can be one of them. The pitch has enough bounce and turn, New Zealand have a good fielding side. He needs to bowl with the positive attitude with which he bats. McCullum is one of the best finishers in the game. He has as strike-rate of 120 while batting in the final 10 overs; 52% of his runs are in boundaries. He needs to be that aggressive while bowling.”I don’t think my role changes at all. It just means I got to little bit more consistent and more aware of performing my role to the full extent,” he said. “When you lose a big player like Daniel Vettori and Kyle Milles every one needs to stand up and perform their role to the full extent.”

But at the last minute the deadline was changed to April 22 with the elections postponed until April 26.In a surprising breaking of ranks, John Aaron, the secretary of USACA, wrote that Paul Da Silva, the chairman of the NY elections committee, changed the dates with the agreement of Selwyn Caesar, the regional director, and then added his own name to the list of candidates for the vacancy of regional representative. Both Da Silva and Caesar are familiar names to those who have followed the travails of USACA in recent years.Other members of the elections committee claim to have been unaware of the changes, and , according to Aaron, Da Silva then went to ground and refused to answer any questions about the situation. To add to the confusion, when the committee eventually sat, Da Silva withdrew his name from the list of candidates.Even Caesar appears to have been caught off guard. “I did not anticipate Paul entering the race, nor did he discuss same with me,” he told Aaron before the committee met. “If so, I would have given him a different direction prior to the application, and not to run.
