A próxima partida do Verdão no campeonato será contra o Sport, no Recife (PE).

Bangladesh chase 150 with ease

Bangladesh kept themselves in the running for a spot in the final of the Zimbabwe tri-series, just, with a six-wicket win over Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club

Bangladesh kept themselves in the running for a spot in the final of the Zimbabwe tri-series, just, with a six-wicket win over Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club. Nasir Hossain held Bangladesh’s pursuit of 150 together, responding to Hamilton Masakadza’s half-century with an unbeaten 41 to guide his side home with 15 balls to spare. The real credit for the win must go to Bangladesh’s bowlers, however, as they scuppered Zimbabwe’s charge at the death of their innings to keep the target within reach. An aggressive start from Zimbabwe’s batsmen had put the home side in a position to reach at least 160 after Brendan Taylor won his third toss in a row and, once again, decided to bat first. Zimbabwe were well-placed at 125 for 3 at the end of the 16th over, with two set batsmen at the crease before Bangladesh clawed their way back into the game.Left-arm spinner Elias Sunny provided the breakthrough by having Stuart Matsikenyeri caught at long on for an industrious 27, and from that point onwards wickets fell regularly. The complexion of the match changed completely as Mashrafe Mortaza returned to have Masakadza caught behind, heaving at a slower ball, for 56. In the same over Elton Chigumbura’s run out reduced Zimbabwe to 132 for 6 before Prosper Utseya was undone by an Abul Hasan slower ball and Graeme Cremer sliced an attempted slog to be caught in the deep off Mortaza, who was named Man of the Match for his efforts.Zimbabwe’s stumble, during which they lost five wickets for just 31 runs in the last five overs of their innings, gave Bangladesh a gettable target at which to aim and their openers, Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful, launched the chase with gusto. Taylor opened the bowling with Prosper Utseya, the offspinner promptly being despatched for two crisp boundaries in his first five balls. Chris Mpofu’s first over went for 15, and Bangladesh were flying at 25 without loss.Bangladesh then suffered a stutter, courtesy some needlessly reckless batting from Ashraful, who was bowled attempting a paddle, and some equally casual running from Tamim. Graeme Cremer had Anamul Haque caught behind in his first over to reduce Bangladesh to a wobbly 52 for 3 in the seventh over, but Nasir Hossain then joined captain Mushfiqur Rahim in the middle and the pair set about repairing the innings.Theirs was a watchful partnership, and apart from Mushfiqur’s solitary six, their entire stand of 47 was made up of scampered ones and twos. Zimbabwe’s hopes will have been briefly raised when a superb pick-up and throw from Vusi Sibanda had Mushfiqur run out for 31, but Hossain and Mahmudullah closed out the match in a flurry of boundaries. They put on an unbeaten 54 at almost 13-runs an over to keep Bangladesh’s hopes alive in this series.Earlier, Masakadza had once again provided the backbone of Zimbabwe’s innings and his extraordinary run of form has now extended to a century and three fifties in his last four innings. After Masakadza lost his opening partner, Vusi Sibanda, to a run out, a partnership of 48 in 32 deliveries with his captain Taylor helped Zimbabwe to weather the early breakthrough and briefly keep the ascendancy. Taylor contributed watchful 38s in Zimbabwe’s previous two wins, holding the middle order together, but with his side seemingly assured of a place in Sunday’s final he chose to take the attack to the bowlers.Taylor raced to 27 from just 12 balls but then played one shot too many, a top-edged hoick ending up in Mahmudullah’s hands at deep midwicket. Taylor’s dismissal meant that Zimbabwe’s middle order, which hasn’t really been tested yet in this series, were offered the chance for some time in the middle. Craig Ervine couldn’t make anything of the opportunity, however, as his dreadful run with the bat continued when he played outside the line of a Mahmudullah straight-break to depart for a golden duck. While Masakadza remained Zimbabwe still looked like passing 160, and he was cheered to a 47-ball fifty in the 15th over. The crowds attending the matches at Harare Sports Club have swelled as Zimbabwe racked up consecutive wins, and a particularly noisy rabble around Castle Corner kept warm on a wintry afternoon with choruses of exuberant and vocal support. Once Masakadza was prised out by Mortaza, however, they had much less cause to celebrate.

Horton prospers but Surrey take important step

Paul Horton, with a composed, efficient century, ensured that Lancashire enjoyed the best of the first day against Surrey

Paul Horton, with a composed, efficient century, ensured that Lancashire enjoyed the best of the first day of a game that might have more relevance to the relegation struggle than either side would like.Horton, taking advantage of a rusty attack, a decent if slow pitch and a small, quick outfield, complied his second Championship century of the season to earn Lancashire a strong platform. Leaving the ball well, but deflecting when the bowlers erred in line and cutting when they erred in length, Horton provided his side with an opportunity to pass 350 on the second day for just the fourth time his season. The day might not have gone as Surrey hoped when they inserted Lancashire on a pitch that had been under cover for much of the last few weeks but, in the circumstances, they should not be so displeased. For this was a day of new starts for Surrey. Most pertinently, this was their first Championship game since the death of Tom Maynard. Cricket, understandably, has not been at the forefront of the players’ minds in the last few weeks and, even if the first steps back into the rigours of the first-class game were somewhat faltering, they have, at least, been taken. It does not mean they have forgotten; just that they have accepted the cruel inevitability that life goes on and that the time has come to continue with their lives. Maybe a little wiser, certainly a little sadder, but this was another step that needed to be taken in the grieving process. They will gain strength in the weeks and months ahead. Not only simply because they possess extravagant individual talent – their attack in this game consists of five specialist bowlers who have all, at one time or another, been deemed good enough for international cricket – but because they are united in spirit. As Chris Adams, Surrey’s team director, told the Press Association: “We have a very natural cause now and a permanent 12th man in Tom Maynard.”When something like this happens, there aren’t really any books to help you. Every situation, every team, every player is unique in their own right. But the one constant that exists in our lives at the moment is cricket. In quite a brutal way, things don’t stop. Life goes on.”The way everybody at this club has handled that has left me nothing short of proud. There is a deep wound in this side, we know that, and it will take time to mend. But these players will come through it stronger. The memories will stay but they will be tougher for this experience.”Tom died on the Monday and by Thursday I had to get my head around the idea of the team playing cricket again the next day. You can’t plan for that. You can’t plan for the day you win the toss, choose to bat and have both opening batsmen breaking down in tears after a minute’s silence.”That is when you draw on your courage. To a man, every one of us was in tears and we were about to start a Twenty20 game. The essence of that moment told me how brave and courageous this team was. It makes them tighter as a unit and helps us all to realise how precious life is.”Tom was a huge member of this team, both as a cricketer and as a person, but perhaps more as a person. He was loved by everyone. You cannot begin to quantify the loss of his personality in the dressing room. When he opened his mouth, a negative word never came out. It sometimes it isn’t clear how much impact someone like that has until they’re not there. But there are people here who want to do twice as much to recover that.”We can take that positivity and grasp it for our team. I wouldn’t say we’re through anything yet, people are still hurting, but it is time to do our day job and make Tom proud of us for that because it’s what he would have done.”The game also featured a return for Chris Tremlett after back surgery. The fast bowler, out of contract with Surrey and England at the end of this year, was playing his first first-class game since the first Test against Pakistan in the UAE in January and, on another day, could have picked up three or four wickets. As it was, he suffered from at least two dropped chances. While not absolutely at his best – he delivered five no-balls and did not quite have the control, the rhythm or the pace of his peak – this was an impressive return. Generating that familiar, steep bounce, he benefitted from bowling a fuller length after lunch and provided an encouraging reminder of his substantial abilities.Had Surrey accepted the chances that came their way, they might have taken control of the game. First Karl Brown, on 30, fencing at a rising delivery from Tremlett, was badly missed by Gareth Batty at first slip, before Steven Croft was reprieved on 0 and 3, off Tremlett and Stuart Meaker respectively. The first opportunity came when Steven Davies was unable to cling on down the leg side, the second when Murali Kartik, at second slip, was unable to hold on to a tough chance. Horton, too, survived an edge off a beauty from Tremlett that may have bounced just in front of Kartik at slip.As it was, Meaker accounted for Stephen Moore, trapped on the crease and beaten for pace, and Karl Brown, caught behind after prodding at a good one on off stump. Horton, too, was eventually caught in the slips after edging one he had to play that bounced and took the edge. Had Surrey bowled a fuller length throughout, batting would have proved far harder.”I think we all thought there would be more moisture in the pitch,” Horton said after a day truncated by 15 overs due to showers. “There was a little swing, but I think they thought it would do more. We were edging towards bowling first, too, if we won the toss. We’re very happy with that score.”There was a heartening scene before play, too. Peter Moores and Kevin Pietersen, the coach and captain sacked by England at the end of 2008, could be seen shaking hands and chatting amiably. It was the first time the pair had spoken since the episode. While they may never be the closest of friends, it was encouraging to see them put any lingering resentment in the past. Life is too short for that.

Kent’s seven-wicket defeat with four sessions to spare against Essex has virtually put paid to their faltering push for Championship promotion

The tea-time scones, fresh cream and strawberries were still served to the punters cramming the marquees at Kent’s Canterbury Week clash with Essex on Friday; the only pity was that, by then, the game was long finished and the majority of players had left the ground.Kent’s seven-wicket defeat with four sessions to spare against their previously struggling neighbours not only further savaged the dwindling Kentish coffers, but has virtually put paid to their faltering push for Championship promotion.Resuming on their parlous overnight score of 9 for 3, Kent proceeded to lose their last seven wickets for 92 runs in the space of 29 overs – and this against a three-man Essex attack already without their wily seamer David Masters, who was hampered by a side strain.Harbhajan Singh proved a handful in taking three, as did Graham Napier, who showed all his experience to also bag three and lend support to Essex’s spearhead, Maurice Chambers, who posted his first four-wicket return in two years.Kent captain Rob Key conceded afterwards that his decision to take first use of the pitch in this 161st Canterbury Week game was not a simple one.”There’s always something in the wickets here and, I have to say, I don’t mind losing the toss because it’s never an easy decision to bat,” Key said. “But one thing’s for sure, when we do bat, regardless of whether it’s second or first, we have to do it a fair bit better than we did in this match. The wicket was never bad enough for us to be bowled out for 101.”We need someone to come through the tricky periods and make a big score, but no one’s holding their hands up right now.””Had we set them 150-plus to win, then it might have been a different result, who knows, but setting them only 55 we had no chance. The margins in difference are quite small, but they might have made a big impression on the outcome if only we had batted that little bit more sensibly.”Needing 55 for their second win of the Division Two campaign – their first came against Gloucestershire in the opening round – Essex lost both openers within 15 overs. Azhar Mahmood, on his first Championship appearance of the season, snared Jaik Mickleburgh lbw as he wafted to leg, then removed Tom Westley’s off pole after an errant decision to leave alone.Owais Shah inexplicably holed out to long leg to gift Charlie Shreck a wicket and make it 35 for 3 but Ryan ten Doeschate marched in to finish it in no-nonsense style with a six into the Frank Woolley stand and a manufactured single to square leg.A delighted Essex captain, James Foster, said afterwards: “I thought this was a terrific result for us, and we needed it. We showed a lot of character and it was a big performance because it gives us a sniff of promotion and something to play for in the run in.”
