Clarke drained by 'tough summer'

Michael Clarke faces more headaches to rebuild his team and iron out problems, after the retirements of Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey

Daniel Brettig at the SCG06-Jan-2013

Australia have shored up a place at No. 3 on the ICC’s Test rankings as a result of a 3-0 sweep of Sri Lanka. The difficulty their captain Michael Clarke now faces is the team that took them there will not be the one he leads first to India, and then to the Ashes beyond.Losing Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting in the space of a single summer, while at the same time grooving a policy of fast-bowler management has made it a draining six Tests for Clarke, and in the wake of the five-wicket victory at the SCG he acknowledged the size of the task ahead. He also admitted to the difficulty of guiding the team while shedding such an enormous amount of experience. If Clarke was more emotional at the time of Ponting’s exit in Perth, he was clearer headed about what Hussey’s retirement meant for the tours of India and England – increased difficulty. “Another man down unfortunately,” Clarke said. “It’s been a tough summer to be honest. It’s been nice to have some guys come in and make their debut but it’s been tough to see two fantastic players in Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey leave the game.”We certainly have a tough year ahead, that’s for sure. I think on our good days we’re very good and can cut it with the best, like the No. 1 team in the world South Africa, but on our poor days there’s a lot of areas we need to improve, both individually and as a team. I think what you’ve seen of the Australian team this summer probably sums up where we’re at. We’re fighting to get better every day, that’s the positive.”Australia’s performance in Sydney rather summed up the patchiness of their summer. Making an indifferent start after eminently debatable decisions both in team selection and at the coin toss, Clarke’s men wrested back an advantage via the counter-punching of Matthew Wade and then pressured Sri Lanka’s batsmen into a series of grievous errors on the third afternoon that ultimately determined the outcome of the match.”The days we aren’t performing as well as we can, whether that be with the ball or with the bat, we’re letting ourselves down,” Clarke said. “At the moment there’s a bit of a gap between very good and not so good but we’ve got a team that’s working very hard. Every day we get out of bed we’re trying to get better.”I certainly can’t have a go at the boys. I think the commitment throughout the whole summer has been outstanding – the way we’ve trained and prepared, the role the support staff have played … We know we’ve got some work to do but we’re up for the challenge.”While Jackson Bird’s emergence as a commendably reliable paceman against Sri Lanka was arguably the most significant find of the Tests, Clarke and his fellow selectors will have some other revelations to consider ahead of India. One of the least convenient was the struggle of several batsmen against spin, notably the opener Ed Cowan, and another was the top order’s lack of precision when running between the wickets. Shane Watson’s future, and the team’s balance, is clouded by his reluctance to continue bowling.Clarke said the spectre of slow bowling on turning Indian pitches was something that would take plenty of skill and application to overcome, particularly now that Hussey has left the scene. “It will be really tough, especially in the second innings on the subcontinent is generally very tough to play spin bowling. I think we’re improving,” Clarke said. “There are areas we need to continually get better at. Spin bowling is one of those areas. In a couple of months, we’re going to be faced with conditions that spin a lot, so there’s no better place to get better than on the subcontinent.”I’m really impressed with the way we finished this summer in the Test format. I was really proud of the way we fought it out against the No.1 Test team in the world. I think we have taken a lot from that series and I think we’ve shown improvement throughout this series.”The ODI team will be led by George Bailey for the first two matches of the series against Sri Lanka, as Clarke rests a tender hamstring, but he felt sure he would be fit and refreshed in time to return for game three in Brisbane. It will be the next phase of a year in which Clarke has now become more pivotal than ever.

Indian affection pushes Johnson to centre-stage

Mitchell Johnson is looming as a central player in Australia’s plans for the Test matches against India

Daniel Brettig11-Feb-2013

“All us fast bowlers have been given an SG ball to play with and we’ve been working on that”•Getty Images

For his durability, experience and current run of strong form, Mitchell Johnson is looming as a central player in Australia’s plans for the Test matches against India. There is something else that will also enhance Johnson’s chances of taking on a major role for the tourists, an attitude more so than an attribute. Johnson enjoys bowling in India, loves the feel provided by the SG ball, and has no qualms whatsoever about the adversity destined to be faced by all fast men on the subcontinent.Across six Test matches in India, Johnson’s returns have been serviceable rather than spectacular – 21 wickets at 37.23 – but he has developed an affinity for the region and its conditions. The captain Michael Clarke and the coach Mickey Arthur value his ability to deliver long spells and summon the occasional burst of reverse swing, despite conditions that could not be more different from Johnson’s happiest hunting ground at the WACA.If Johnson is yet to play in a winning Test match in India, on at least one occasion he should have. The 2010 Mohali Test ended in a one-wicket victory for the hosts, yet with a few runs still required Johnson pinned Pragyan Ojha for the plumbest of LBW shouts, only to have the umpire Billy Bowden deny the appeal. That day, the SG ball sat comfortably in Johnson’s left hand, and it did again recently when he began training with it again in preparation for the tour.”I love bowling with the SG ball. It’s a nice feel in the hands, it’s a bit thin at the seam but it stands up taller,” Johnson said. “In their conditions over there what I’ve learned is the ball really doesn’t swing. The last couple of times I’ve been there, watching the Indians they bowl a lot across the seam for 10-12 overs, and then they seem to really get into the rough side, getting a bit of sweat into it and shine the other side, and getting reverse swing. That’s something I’ve picked up over there.”Reverse swing is a very hard thing to face, so that’ll be something we’ll be trying our best to do … I’m sure the guys are already practising it over there. I’ve had SG balls at training sessions. I actually went back to club training while we were in Perth and bowled with an SG ball over there and it started to do a few things early on. All us fast bowlers have been given an SG ball to play with and we’ve been working on that. I’m looking forward to getting into that practice game [in Chennai] and seeing if it all works.”Australian knowledge of how to bowl fast in India reached a peak in 2004 when the visitors won the series 2-1, breaking a drought that stretched back to 1969-70. However those lessons had been all but lost by the time Ricky Ponting’s team returned in 2008, when none of the bowlers seemed to have any clue about how to get the ball moving.Their coach Troy Cooley appeared even less an authority on the topic, and the vistors’ eyes widened at how often India’s bowlers ignored the conventional seam-up approach and had the ball reverse swinging inside a handful of overs. Since then a little more know-how has been gained, and Johnson said he had taken time to watch footage of Zaheer Khan by way of refreshing his memory.”It does go [reverse] early, and with a hard reverse swinging ball it does make it even harder to face I think,” Johnson said. “I’ve been watching Zaheer Khan bowl, he’s an unbelievable left-arm bowler, and just watching the way he bowled over in their conditions. When the ball’s reverse swinging when it’s hard and then bouncing through a bit more it’s very difficult, and he’s had a lot of success over there.”Hopefully a few other guys like Peter Siddle have learned from that and are going to take that into the tour. We’ve got a few fast bowlers over there but I’ll be pushing as hard as I can to get into that first XI. It’s a great thing to have for Australian cricket in a Test series over in India, very difficult conditions to bowl in as a fast bowler. I love the challenge of bowling over there in those conditions, against a great side. There’ll be some fiery net sessions I’m sure.”While Australia’s selection of a 17-man squad has provided the team with a wide array of options, there is a view within the team that to load up with spin in deference to the slow, low surfaces likely to be on offer would detract from the great strength of pace bowling that has helped lift the team to third in the ICC’s Test rankings since Clarke became captain.Steve Rixon, the assistant coach, is adamant that high quality pace bowling will be as difficult for India’s batsmen to face as wily spin will be vexing for Australia. Though not a selector, he counselled those choosing the team for the first Test in Chennai not to sap an area Australia is strong simply because it is the done thing in India.”That’s one thing we keep forgetting about,” Rixon said. “We talk about swinging the ball up front and reverse-swing during the game is very important. But having tall bowlers hitting the deck hard at 145 (km/h) is equally as hard for any Asian player to combat as it would be for our guys to combat their spin bowling.”We’re going to have a distinct advantage with our quick bowlers. Our quick bowlers will play a part and it will be the fact that they hit the deck hard – whether [selectors] have a leaning towards your spinners, which I’m thinking is going away from our strength. But I don’t make that decision. Our quicks have put us where we are. In these conditions, we shouldn’t ignore that. Just because you’re playing in different conditions, your strength is still your strength.”

Mal o segundo tempo havia começado e o Flamengo voltou a comemorar.

– Nosso time está preparado.

Samaraweera retires from international cricket

Thilan Samaraweera has retired from international cricket after being left out of the Sri Lanka squad for the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle

Thilan Samaraweera announced his retirement ahead of the Bangladesh Tests to give younger players a chance to play in the squad•Associated Press

Thilan Samaraweera has retired from international cricket after being left out of the Sri Lanka squad for the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle, which starts on March 8. Samaraweera had sent a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday informing it of his intention and the board has now accepted his decision.”I was shocked with my omission from the squad against Bangladesh,” Samaraweera said, adding he had been told by the selectors that they may need him to play Pakistan later this year.”There was no point in waiting for nine months. I respect the decision of the selectors to go with young players and decided it was the right time for me to retire.”SLC wanted him to play against Bangladesh – perhaps a farewell Test – but Samaraweera declined because he felt the time was right to retire.”I never wanted a farewell match because if you’re not good enough to be in the 15-man squad, there’s nowhere in the world you can play in the first XI,” the 36-year-old Samaraweera said. “I didn’t want to be selfish and deprive a youngster of his place by requesting to play in a farewell Test.”Samaraweera’s decision to retire was brought on as much by a lack of Test matches for Sri Lanka in 2013, as his non-selection for the first Test against Bangladesh. Apart from the two home Tests in March, Sri Lanka only have one away tour to Zimbabwe during the year, which Samaraweera was unlikely to attend in any case, before the year-end tour to Pakistan. A proposed series against South Africa was postponed to 2015.”I may not have retired so early if the Test series against West Indies and South Africa had not been postponed because as a cricketer you’d always want to play against the number one team which is South Africa at the moment.”Samaraweera will leave for England next week to represent county side Worcestershire during the 2013 season. “I will take a decision at the end of the English season whether to retire from first-class cricket,” he said. His international career comes to a close after a woeful tour of Australia, where he made 79 runs in six innings. He reclaimed form in Sri Lanka’s first-class competition since then, hitting 464 runs at 92.8 in four matches. Samaraweera was originally left out of Sri Lanka’s preliminary Test squad for the Bangladesh series, but was later called into that squad when Mahela Jayawardene’s finger injury ruled him out of the series. He could not find a place in the final 16, however. In a letter to media, Samaraweera thanked the coaches, clubs, team-mates and family who had supported him through his career, and laid out the reason for his retirement. “Although I have not lost the power of my passion to make a comeback, my ethics of reasoning does not interest me to do so at this hour where the obvious focus should be to find a balance in the prospects we have for the future,” he said.Samaraweera has played 81 Tests, and scored 5462 runs at 48.76, with 14 hundreds. He was primarily an offspinner at the beginning of his domestic career, but transformed himself into a secure, if dour, middle-order batsman, in order to break into the Sri Lanka side in the time of Muttiah Muralitharan. He also played 53 ODIs, but his conservative style of play never made him a natural fit for the shorter formats, even after he began improving his stroke range later on in his career.Samaraweera’s Test career has had several starts, most notably when he came back from being shot during the 2009 Lahore attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus, after he had made double-hundreds in back-to-back Tests in Pakistan. Samaraweera had surgery to remove the bullet which had travelled 12 inches into his thigh, and underwent months of physical and psychological therapy, before returning to the Test side four months later. He was dropped for more than a year in 2006, and again for one series in 2011, but he returned triumphantly from his second layoff to play his most memorable Test innings – a first innings 102 which enabled Sri Lanka to win their first Test in South Africa, in Durban.Though he had received a central contract from SLC, Sri Lanka’s selectors had expressed a desire to build a youthful Test side in 2013, and was unlikely to play a major role in what little Test cricket Sri Lanka had scheduled.
