Early mistakes can be good sign – Chappell

Greg Chappell, Australia Under-19’s team manager, said that it was good his team were making mistakes early on, as they could rectify and learn from them ahead of the World Cup

Greg Chappell said Australia Under-19’s biggest weakness was against spin•AFP

The last ten days, ever since they left home for Sri Lanka and then the UAE, have been difficult for the Australian Under-19 team. The three-time World Cup winners failed to win any of their four games since the start of February, losing 3-0 to Sri Lanka U-19s and conceding their opening warm-up game against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi.Despite the less than ideal build-up to the tournament, set to get underway in three days’ time, Australia’s team manager Greg Chappell said the early hiccups may not be the worst thing to happen to the team. He felt it would help identify weaknesses and hopefully correct them by the time the results matter.Australia had failed to last their full 50 overs after opting to bat, and were bundled out for 195 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium Nursery 1. Their bowlers made Zimbabwe sweat in pursuit of a modest target but ultimately lost the game by three wickets.”In Sri Lanka and in this game, we did not just quite finish things off. Something like 20 odd extras while bowling (proved costly), and we would have made probably 20 or 30 more runs while batting,” Chappell said. “But, the only way you learn is to make mistakes and hopefully get better. We have made a few mistakes. That’s a good sign and we need to learn from it.”Australia were let down by their batting in Sri Lanka, with scores of 167, 137 and 202, once again being unable to bat out the full innings in any of the matches. Their bowlers ran Sri Lanka close in the third game, but the hosts scraped home by two wickets in the final over. Chappell said the matches so far indicated that there was plenty of room for improvement in all three departments.”We learned a lot from it (the Sri Lanka series). They bowled spin pretty well in their conditions. But, again what we learned is that we have to do the basics right,” he said. “We need to build partnerships, catch everything and we need to bowl a little bit better than we have done so far. We have given too many runs, missed too many catches and that has hurt us.”Chappell said that the team’s biggest weakness was spin. Against Zimbabwe, they lost six wickets to the spinners, with the legspinner Deven Bell returning with the best figures of 3 for 38. “We have struggled a little bit with spin bowling, both batting and bowling it. It is not been our great strength, has never been and probably will never be.”But, we have got to back our strengths here and back the group as a whole. We have a pretty solid group with some good leadership and we rely on them getting through themselves from where the coaches won’t have much of a say.”Australia play their second practice game on Wednesday in Dubai against Pakistan. They are in Group B along with Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Namibia.

Afridi's form a boost, says Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez has said that Shahid Afridi’s blows that won Pakistan an Asia Cup thriller against India earlier this month in Mirpur have boosted the side’s morale ahead of their World T20 opener against their archrivals

We have the allrounders’ edge – Hafeez

Pakistan are hopeful Shahid Afridi can produce an encore of his Asia Cup innings in the first match of the World Twenty20•AFP

Mohammad Hafeez has said that Shahid Afridi’s blows that won Pakistan an Asia Cup thriller against India earlier this month in Mirpur have boosted the side’s morale ahead of their World T20 opener against their archrivals. Afridi is expected to play a significant role in the tournament despite not being fully fit, as Hafeez admitted. Afridi joined the squad late, taking time to recover from a hip strain.”He is in good form and we have seen that in the Asia Cup,” Hafeez said of Afridi. “It is a good sign for us because we always wanted him to bat lower down the order and finish the game well for Pakistan, and it is always great to know that he is in form, and in a good frame of mind. It is always great when your senior players are looking forward to challenges. The way the momentum has shifted, it is a boost for our morale. I hope he repeats his heroics and pleases Pakistani fans again.”Afridi’s fitness has improved quite a bit. He has made himself available for everything. This is a good sign. He’s not 100% still but he’s ready and fit to play this tournament. He is eager to put in a good performance.”Hafeez was also pleased with Umar Gul’s returns in the practice game against New Zealand, where the fast bowler took 3 for 16 from four overs.”Umar Gul is working very hard. After the Asia Cup, where he did not do too well, he has picked up and performed well in the practice matches. That is all you want from your players. All they can do is work hard. Form can go up and down, but if they are willing to work hard it sends the right signal to the team. That is exactly what Gul has done.”Pakistan also have the services of a few allrounders, including Hafeez, and MS Dhoni said sides that could call upon such multi-skilled players were “blessed”. Hafeez seconded the sentiment.”As far as the all-rounder edge is concerned, yes, we do believe we have a good allrounders in the group. We have Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, myself, Kamran Akmal as wicketkeeper-batsman, so we are blessed to have players like that in the team and hopefully that will help us.”Hafeez was not too perturbed by Pakistan’s winless record against India in World Cups and World T20s and he believed their collapse in the second warm-up against South Africa, where they were dismissed for 71, was unlikely to affect them too much in the tournament.”It’s not that every day has to be great,” he said. “Some days are good and some bad. We have good batsmen in our team. In the second practice match, our objective was to give a few people time in the middle. We achieved that.”While Hafeez acknowledged the build-up of an India-Pakistan game among fans, he cautioned that it was only one of several games that Pakistan would have to play in the tournament.”It is always great to know the expectations of the people and the fans around the world. We are not considering only one game at the time,” he said. “Yes, an India-Pakistan game is always important but this is not the whole tournament and we want to give a good show in the whole tournament. The first game is always important as you want to do well in that game so that you can get the momentum right. We are looking forward to this and hopefully the boys will do well to get the best results for Pakistan.”

BCCI seeks Dhoni's deposition before Mudgal committee

The BCCI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking examination of the deposition of MS Dhoni, N Srinivasan and Sundar Raman before the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee

The Supreme Court heard the matter on Friday, and deferred it till April 16, the scheduled date of its next hearing of the IPL corruption case•AFP

The BCCI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking examination of the deposition of three key individuals before the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee that was appointed for a fact-finding mission on last year’s IPL corruption scandal. The BCCI has requested audio recordings of India captain MS Dhoni, IPL chief operating officer Sundar Raman and sidelined BCCI president N Srinivasan. The Supreme Court heard the matter on Friday, and deferred it till April 16, the scheduled date of its next hearing of the IPL corruption case.*At the Friday hearing, the court was informed by the secretary of the Justice Mudgal Committee, Vidushpat Singhania, that the court had been provided with minutes of the meetings and depositions before the panel, and not transcripts or recordings.During the previous hearing of the IPL case, the court divided the BCCI presidency into two parts during its interim order. In that hearing, Harish Salve, representing the Cricket Association of Bihar, the petitioners against the BCCI, had accused Dhoni of having indulged in “corrupt practices” by covering up facts about the role of Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan in the Chennai Super Kings franchise. In the Mudgal report, the mention of Dhoni’s deposition is as follows: “Mr MS Dhoni, Mr N Srinivasan and officials of India Cements took the stand that Mr Meiyappan had nothing to do with the cricketing affairs of Chennai Super Kings and was a mere cricket enthusiast supporting Super Kings.” While Raman had told the Mudgal committee that the ownership structure of IPL franchises was “ambiguous”, Srinivasan was referred to in the committee’s report twice, with references made to his conflict of interest in the case.At the start of its hearing, the Mudgal committee is understood to have recorded conversations in order to keep an accurate record of the minutes every deposition. Those being interviewed were told that the recordings would not be used in court and were deleted after the minutes had been accurately noted down. At one stage of the hearing, the recordings are known to have been stopped. Along with the Mudgal committee report, both parties were made available 4000 pages of annexures which did not consist of recordings from the 52 depositions made to the committee.A sealed envelope, however, contains minutes of the meetings and depositions that took place before the committee pertaining to unverified allegations and should the court agree to hand over the minutes of the meeting, they will have to be made available to both parties.During the March 25 hearing, the court stated while it could not divulge details of the sealed envelope given to them by the Mudgal panel, the BCCI’s lawyers were shown certain portions of the report. When the counsel, CA Sundaram, said “We have not seen the contents of the report in the sealed cover”, Justice Patnaik is believed to have summoned him to the bench and had him read a portion of the sealed envelope report.06.25GMT, April 11: This article was updated after the court hearing on Friday.

Goa thrash Haryana, extend unbeaten run

A round-up of group matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that were played on April 8, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2014Group AGoa’s unbeaten run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy extended into the Super League as they defeated Haryana by eight wickets in Rajkot.Swapnil Asnodkar’s unbeaten 70 off 59 balls guided the 117-run chase, helping Goa achieve the target in 18 overs. He had good support from Suraj Dongre and Rohit Asnodkar.Earlier, Goa’s bowlers mad a big contribution to the win, keeping Haryana to 116 for 9. They had an early advantage, reducing Haryana to 36 for 4 in the sixth over and they built on it, in spite of a 40-run, fifth-wicket partnership between Joginder Sharma and Rahul Dalal. Medium-pacer Harshad Gadekar was the most successful bowler for Goa with 2 for 17.Gujarat rode on left-arm seamer Kamlesh Thakor’s 3 for 19 to wrap up a comfortable six-wicket victory over Jharkhand. A feeble target of 109 was mowed down with almost two overs to spare with their captain Akshar Patel remaining unbeaten on 46 off 37. He struck six fours, and his presence nullified the impact of two quick wickets as the chase went into the final five overs.Jharkhand never got going after they chose to bat. They lost three wickets in the powerplay and their rebuilding efforts were hampered by regular wickets. Kumar Deobrat was the top-scorer with 25 off 19, but six of his colleagues had a strike-rate less than hundred. All of Gujarat’s bowlers managed to pick up wickets and only one of them went at over run-a-ball.Group BIn the first Group B match between the toppers of the east and the west zones, Baroda’s bowlers prevailed over Bengal and helped clinch an easy seven-wicket win at the Bandra-Kurla Complex ground in Mumbai.Opting to bowl, Baroda put immediate pressure on the opposition by getting rid of the Bengal openers in the first five overs. The innings never really recovered as Bengal batsmen failed to construct any meaningful partnerships. Sanjib Sanyal, the Bengal captain, top-scored with 13 in a total of 96 as the trio of Lukman Meriwala, Hardik Pandya and Abhijit Karambelkar finished with combined figures of 12-1-51-9.Baroda openers then gave their team a solid start adding 37 and despite the loss of two quick wickets in the seventh and the eighth overs, the team was never in trouble. Deepak Hooda and Rakesh Solanki scored an unbeaten 39 for the third wicket to help Baroda cross the line in 14 overs.Kerala pipped Delhi by 14 runs at Wankhede Stadium to procure a winning start to the Super League. The target of 151 was not beyond Delhi’s reach, despite being without their captain Gautam Gambhir, but none of their batsmen could build on their starts. KJ Rakesh was the most influential factor in the victory, taking 3 for 34 and also contributing 36 with the bat.Having been put in, VA Jagadeesh smashed 52 off 36 balls, including nine fours to fuel Kerala’s opening stand of 89. The rest of the batting failed to gather similar momentum. Javed Khan (2 for 22) took two wickets in four balls which aided in muffling the charge. The chase was maligned by early wickets but Nagar and Jagrit Anand offered some stability with a 34-run parthership for the fourth wicket. There was little resistance since that stand until No. 9 Sood struck 22 off 13 balls but victory was firmly beyond Delhi when he fell in the final over.
