Shah, Ervine late blitz enough for Hants

A superb partnership between Owais Shah and Sean Ervine of 85 from just 6.2 overs propelled Hampshire to a 19 run victory over Middlesex and to second in the South Group. Shah, who scored 58 not out and Ervine who scored 42 not out, elevated Hampshire from the fragile position of 87 for 3 after 13.4 overs to 170 for 3, a total which proved too many for Middlesex who will be disappointed that they didn’t mount a more serious challenge. After winning the toss and electing to bat Hampshire were perilously poised after sixteen overs having scored only 106 on a typically high-scoring ground. Indeed, the concern in Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein’s voice as he spoke to Sky Sports in the sixteenth over was palpable. “We need to be looking at ten an over from here on in,” he said. He got that, and more.Despite the eighteenth over only going for five, Shah and Ervine blitzed 61 off the other 18 balls of the final four overs, including six sixes and three fours to haul Hampshire from weakness to strength in less than fifteen minutes.Shah and Ervine are two very different batsman. Shah is an almost prototypical example of classical batting evolved, while Ervine, although versatile, is less subtle; more force than flair and more beast than beauty. But regardless of their differences the havoc they wreaked was undistinguishable. The sixteenth over, bowled by James Franklin was plundered for 16 before 25 came off the penultimate over bowled by Steven Finn who looked down on pace and, from England’s perspective, worryingly lacklustre. Shah reached his fifty with a scampered two in the final over before smiting the last delivery of the innings for six to elevate Hampshire to 170 for 3.Hampshire’s problem earlier on was that of the top three batsmen only Michael Carberry could get in. James Vince struggled desperately, scratching around for 24 painful minutes and 16 balls for the reward of just 9 runs before he fell in the seventh over dragging on to Franklin. Jimmy Adams too faced six balls before being caught for 3. Adams has scored just nine runs in his last three innings.A couple of trademark pull shots from Carberry and some proactive running between him and Shah at least instilled some momentum into Hampshire’s innings, but even when Carberry moved to and beyond fifty there was still a sense that Hampshire were behind were they needed be and when Carberry fell for a well-made and platform laying 57 there was still plenty of work to be done. Even after Shah and Ervine’s partnership however, Shah felt that Hampshire were perhaps ten runs light of a winning score.Shah’s assessment was of the conditions however, and not necessarily the match and its protagonists. Although Middlesex began their innings on the back of two consecutive scores of 200-plus, the second of which was the highest ever score at Lord’s, Hampshire’s bowling attack is well-practiced at defending scores of around 170, especially at home, and they proved effective in doing so once again.Although four fours were taken from Jackson Bird’s first over once Middlesex lost Nick Compton and Dawid Malan in the space of nine balls in the Powerplay they were quickly playing catch-up.However, although Middlesex were behind the rate from very early on, while international pairing Eoin Morgan and Joe Burns were at the crease there was a chance that they would launch an assault, but it never materialised. Hampshire bowled well, conceding no boundaries between the fifth and ninth over, and Vince shuffled his attack with practiced ease. The trademark Hampshire Squeeze was on.As the innings turned, Middlesex’s patience did too. Burns was caught in the deep by Carberry off the bowling of Yasir Arafat before Morgan fell less than two overs later to leave Middlesex 86-4 and the required run rate almost at 13. Franklin and John Simson briefly threatened to spring a surprise but Hampshire’s canny and experienced bowling attack always came back with answers, to restrict Middlesex to just 153 for 6. Will Smith, Danny Briggs and Yasir Arafat all conceded less than 6.30 runs per over and stood out from a decent bowling performance. Six Middlesex batsmen reached double figures, three scoring more than 27, but none managed more than 31 and ultimately they lacked the innings-shaping performance of which Hampshire had three.

ICC asks Sri Lanka to hold elections before October

The ICC has urged Sri Lanka’s sports ministry to hold Sri Lanka Cricket elections before the next ICC board meeting in October, suggesting “further action” may be taken against SLC “in the event of further non-compliance”

The ICC has urged Sri Lanka’s sports ministry to hold Sri Lanka Cricket elections before the next ICC board meeting in October, suggesting “further action” may be taken against SLC “in the event of further non-compliance”.SLC, whose ICC voting rights remain suspended while the government-appointed interim committee is in charge, has played down the threat of further sanctions. The ICC also still holds payments due to SLC in escrow, but has been periodically releasing funds as SLC requests them.”The ICC Board received an update on Sri Lanka Cricket and reiterated its earlier position that the appointment of an Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) by the Government of Sri Lanka was a breach of the ICC’s constitution,” an ICC release said. “The ICC Board urged the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka to hold free and fair elections before the next ICC Board meeting in October, adding that the ICC reserved the right to take further action against the SLC in the event of further non-compliance.”However, SLC elections appear unlikely to be held in the next four months with sports minister Navin Dissanayake having announced that they were scheduled for January 2016. Interim committee chairman Sidath Wettimuny suggested the ICC would be satisfied with this time frame.”The ICC board said they would like us to hold elections by October, but by latest – January,” Wettimuny said. “The meeting went off O.K. We explained our situation and the ICC explained their technicality.”SLC’s interim committee is in the midst of designing a domestic structure that aims to take cricket into the provinces more effectively, and an election before October would put much of this work at risk. The board is also looking at inviting ICC chairman N Srinivasan to Sri Lanka during the forthcoming Test series with India, in August and September, as a means of maintaining cordial relations with the ICC.

Hong Kong eye second Full Member scalp

Hong Kong have identified Zimbabwe as the favourites in their group, but will look to step up and scalp another Full Member, having defeated Bangladesh in the last World TwentyT20

The Preview by Firdose Moonda07-Mar-2016Match factsTuesday, March 8, 2016
Start time 1500 local (0930GMT)Big pictureA major tournament usually enjoys a blockbuster start and while neither Zimbabwe nor Hong Kong claim to provide that, they promise an intriguing opener. The qualifying round of the World TwentyT20 kicks off with the 13th and 14th ranked sides taking each other on, which means the opener will a lot closer than it may appear.Zimbabwe will fancy their chances of taking an early advantage in the race for the tournament proper, but will do well not to get ahead of themselves. Hong Kong had upset Bangladesh at the same stage in the 2014 World T20, and will eye another Full Member takedown, having played enough T20 cricket. Hong Kong have already identified Zimbabwe as the favourites in their group, but both sides must be confident, following a thorough warm-up program.Zimbabwe had played a handful of games in the UAE and then rebounded from the loss against Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association XI to beat Ireland. Hong Kong went down in each of their three matches in the Asia Cup, and also suffered a thrashing against Ireland, but picked themselves up with a tense win against HPCA XI.Hong Kong will hope that Zimbabwe will not be as tough as UAE and Afghanistan were on them, but Zimbabwe will be keen to put their foot on Hong Kong’s throat and get their campaign off to a winning start.Form guide(last five completed matches)Zimbabwe WWLLL
Hong Kong LLLLWWatch out forSince his international debut in 2003, Vusi Sibanda has promised much, but has failed to deliver consistently. Sibanda’s T20I average is only 19.38, and he has not scored a half-century but has the potential to rectify that anomaly. The reality check of being left out of the 2015 World Cup squad and his experience mean that he has a good chance of breaking through this tournament. At 44 years and 29 days, Ryan Campbell is the oldest player at the tournament and is all set to become the oldest debutant in T20Is. Campbell has more than two decades of experience as a professional cricketer, having played two ODIs for Australia. He was once left chasing Adam Gilchrist for a spot in the Australia XI, but is now on the hunt for a happy second-coming for his adopted home. Campbell starred in Hong Kong’s warm-up win over HPCA XI when he scored 46 off 42 balls and took 2 for 10. He then admitted it felt good to “show you can do it.”Team newsZimbabwe have settled on Richmond Mutumbami at No.3 to follow Hamilton Masakadza and Sibanda. Their middle-order looks solid with Malcolm Waller, Sean Williams, Peter Moor and Elton Chigumbura all providing big-hitting options. Their puzzle comes in the bowling department where they will need to decide which of Tendai Chatara, Tendai Chisoro, Donald Tiripano, Tawanda Mupariwa or Tinashe Panyangara to play. Wellington Masakadza is likely take the specialist spinner’s spot.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Vusi Sibanda, 3 Richmond Mutumbami (wk), 4 Malcolm Waller, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Peter Moor, 7 Elton Chigumbura, 8 Tendai Chatara, 9 Donald Tiripano, 10 Tawanda Mupariwa, 11 Wellington MasakadzaHong Kong (probable): 1 Jamie Atkinson (wk), 2 Ryan Campbell, 3 Babar Hayat, 4 Mark Chapman, 5 Nizakat Khan, 6 Anshuman Rath, 7 Kinchit Shah, 8 Tanwir Afzal (capt), 9 Aizaz Khan, 10 Waqas Barkat, 11 Nadeem AhmedPitch and conditionsUsually dry and cracked, the surface at the Jamtha Stadium is likely to be slow and low and could take turn. It’s set to be a scorcher in Nagpur, with temperatures reaching 36 degrees.Stats and triviaHong Kong and Zimbabwe have only met once before, in a last-ball thriller won by Hong Kong in a warm-up match ahead of the 2014 World T20Quotes”Zimbabwe have some dangerous players in their team and are probably the favourites to go through. But we are confident in our own abilities and for the first time for a while we will have our strongest team. The guys just want to do Hong Kong proud.”
“It’s very different from the Test match wicket. That was a Test match, and this pitch has been prepared for T20, so definitely two different pitches and I think this one will play much better.”

Taticamente corretos. Quem imaginou o time defensivo estava errado. A rivalidade existe. Pertenço a muitos e muitos anos.

Central Districts upset champions Auckland by four wickets

A round-up of the last round of the Plunket Shield matches that ended on April 2, 2016

A century from opener Ben Smith and a second successive five-wicket haul from seamer Navin Patel helped Central Districts to a four-wicket victory over Plunket Shield Champions Auckland in Napier.Auckland had already secured the title coming into this game, and as such their concern would have been on maintaining an unblemished record. They had not lost a single game this season. Their own opener Jeet Raval had set things up nicely with his 147 off 216 balls with 19 fours. Auckland had won the toss, opted to bat and posted a formidable 396 in 98.3 overs at a run-rate of 4.02.Raval’s innings, though, was made necessary with fast bowler Doug Bracewell knocking over Martin Guptill-Bunce for 6 and Robert O’Donnell for 11. Bracewell finished with 5 for 60 in 19 overs, but with Raval leading the batting effort and the middle order putting up staunch resistance – Shawn Hicks made 50 and Colin de Grandhomme made 63 – Auckland got hold of the advantage. It began slipping away soon though as Central Districts made a fine start to their first innings. Smith dropped anchor and was at the crease for nearly 500 minutes, while the rest of the line-up played around him. His 161 included 17 fours and a six, and he was dismissed by Donovan Grobbelaar when the scores were level at 396. Central Districts still had four wickets in hand though and one of them was Bracewell, who struck 75 off 83 balls with six fours and two sixes and propelled the total to 464.A lead of 68 proved all the more valuable for Central Districts when they reduced Auckland to 102 for 6 at the end of the third day’s play. Navin, who was playing his fifth first-class match, was troublemaker-in-chief. He finished with a career-best 5 for 71. Grobbelaar was the top-scorer with 58 off 124 balls, while Nos. 10 and 11 Lachie Ferguson and Matthew Quinn contributed 31 and 35 runs respectively to a total of 266.That meant Central Districts were set a target of 199. Smith and his opening partner Greg Hay knocked off 100 of them, but tension began brewing as legspinner Tarun Nethula began to find purchase on a fourth-day pitch. He got rid of Smith for 49 and went on to complete 200 first-class wickets and his seventh five-wicket haul, which dragged Central Districts from 155 for 2 to 181 for 6. Tom Bruce, the No. 5 batsman, and Navin, who hung around for 5 off 19 balls, eventually took Central Districts over the line.Auckland’s Brad Cachopa completed two catches and a stumping in the match, which gave him the record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a Plunket Shield season – 45, one better than the efforts of the previous record-holder Derek de Boorder.Canterbury finished second in the Plunket Shield after securing 20 points with a seven-wicket win against Wellington at the Basin Reserve. Their win was set up by a century from Ken McClure in the first innings before they asked Wellington to follow-on and the Canterbury pacers did the rest.Put in to bat, Canterbury rode on fifties from top-order batsmen Chad Bowes (81) and Peter Fulton (76) followed by McClure’s 115. Offspinner Jeetan Patel bothered them a bit with four wickets but a patient and unbeaten 79 from Todd Astle pushed Canterbury to 430 for 8, when they declared. Wellington had only one batsman – Stephen Murdoch (105) – go past the score of 30 as Hamish Bennett and Andrew Ellis dismissed them for 201 to make them bat again.Still trailing by 229, Wellington put up a better performance in their second attempt, with a century from No. 6 Tom Blundell taking them to 333. But that set Canterbury a modest target of 105, which they surpassed in 20 overs with the help of an unbeaten 25-ball 55 from Ellis, who struck six fours and four sixes.Northern Districts and Otago played out a rather tame draw in Whangarei to round off an underwhelming Plunket Shield campaign for both teams. Northern Districts finished fourth out of six teams, while Otago brought up the rear.Entering the final day at 55 for 2, Otago still trailed by 78 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand. Overnight batsmen Brad Wilson and Anaru Kitchen stodgily added 83 runs in 49.3 overs, before the partnership was broken. James Neesham then joined Wilson to see Otago through to the end with no further loss. After having won the toss and elected to bat, Otago managed 298 in their first innings, largely on the back of Wilson’s 126. The other top-order batsmen did not convert scores in the 20s and 30s into more substantial ones and part of their problem was seamer James Baker, who picked up 5 for 63.In reply, Northern Districts amassed 431, thanks to BJ Watling’s 176 and tournament top-scorer Bharat Popli’s 89. The two batsmen shared a 199-run third-wicket stand to take the score to 245 for 3, before Otago fought.Joe Walker retired hurt for 1, which provided the opening for legspinner Rhys Phillips and medium-pacer Christi Viljoen to contain the middle and lower order. Wicketkeeper Tim Seifert struck 65 off 95 balls at No. 9 to consolidate Northern Districts’ lead. With eight wickets to take on the final day, they may have hoped to finish the season with a victory but that was not to be.
