Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard shares Instagram story as squad bid farewell to Australia

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United are now officially done with their pre-season challenges in Australia.

After winning both of their pre-season matches in the Land Down Under, the Red Devils have set off for Singapore, where they will face Inter Milan on July 20th.

Still, seeing how they’ve spent a lot of time on the WACA Ground in Perth, the United squad just couldn’t resist playing some cricket and paying homage to England’s incredible World Cup-winning run earlier this summer.

The whole squad took part in it, and even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was seen with a bat in his hands.

Jesse Lingard took to Instagram to share the video with the fans as the Red Devils switched sports for a short while.

This effectively represented Manchester United’s farewell to Australia and the great stadium that hosted them in their first pre-season games.

But the journey is far from being over and the Red Devils still have a way to go before the new Premier League season kicks off in early August.

Real Madrid return could be a costly error for Zinedine Zidane

[ad_pod ]

284 days was how long Real Madrid lasted without their mastermind – the man who once again propelled Los Blancos to unimaginable heights, winning silverware and hearts in the process. 284 days they were separated but now, Zinedine Zidane is back and in a blink of an eye, everything is once again well in the Spanish capital – the crisis averted, the fires extinguished and the kings are ready to sit back on the throne once more. But unfortunately, things are not really that simple in football, even though Real Madrid might wish they were.

It is, however, no coincidence that the Galacticos wanted the Frenchman of all people back at the helm. Their little experiments with Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari ended dragging the team ever closer to the abyss and who better to claw them back to where they belong than the legendary Zidane – an icon for Real Madrid from every imaginable point of view; whether it’s with his blades on his feet or in a suit and a tie, it makes little difference – he is the man for the job.

And for Real Madrid, it has to be said, this deal was the only sensible course of action. After all, no one has quite the pedigree and the reputation of the Frenchman. He was crowned the champion of Europe within the first five months of his appointment, took the Spanish crown right in front of Barcelona’s noses and most importantly, clinched the Champions League title three times in a row, writing history along the way and, what might prove to be his own demise right now, setting an unimaginable standard both for his team and himself as a head coach.

From Zidane’s point of view, however, this appointment makes little if any sense at all. After all, what exactly does he stand to gain from such a mammoth of a task, even in the for now unlikely scenario he somehow steers the sinking ship from the ruins and then over the finish line? Glory? Eternal fame? A place in Real Madrid’s pantheon of icons and legends? Florentino Perez’s and fans’ undying love and appreciation? Maybe, but he already has all of that.

No other Real Madrid manager has achieved what Zidane had done. Nay, no other manager on the planet has achieved what he has, and just for that and his Champions League endeavours, he has reached immortality, at least among the Galacticos. The only thing he can do right now with this appointment is throw it all out of the window.

Yes, he returned because he loves the club and when Perez called, he presumably couldn’t say no. But why did he leave in the first place, then? He knew something was wrong or rather, he knew he squeezed the last possible atom of strength his squad had left and there was nothing more to give – the team was drained and he was drained alongside them. There’s a reason they say you should quit while you’re ahead.

Because, quite frankly, looking ahead right now, Zidane’s Real can only go down and all the Frenchman can do is tarnish his reputation, and tarnish it badly. Similarly, when his counterpart in Pep Guardiola, who has the same reputation at Barcelona, decided to leave, he left because he didn’t have anything else to give. Staying would’ve only hurt the team and his legacy, which is now, partly because he timed his departure almost flawlessly, immortal.

Check out an epic rant about Real Madrid fans that we can all relate to below…

But Zidane’s legacy was looking to endure the sands of time, just like Guardiola’s has but now, it’s still very much up in the air. The new Real Madrid team looks extremely shaky, to say the least. Zidane’s return had that initial surge but now it’s more and more apparent – they are in a real crisis.

Of course, this is not to say that we’re looking at the end of Real Madrid and the end of their ever-lasting presence in the world of football. No, football clubs, especially the ones of Real Madrid’s size, have a tendency of being quite self-sufficient. There is no way they just disappear due to one difficult spell after years of domination.

Zidane’s reputation and his legacy, however, are more fragile than one might think. He wouldn’t be the first one to go from the would-be saviour to a martyr, and the likes of Arsene Wenger and co. can surely attest to that. People love heroes but one thing they love more than heroes is to see them fall.

[ad_pod ]

And with Cristiano Ronaldo long gone but never truly replaced, Gareth Bale still not coming to terms with the Frenchman and an ageing core of the squad looking prime for a major overhaul, Zidane is looking at an uphill battle with high risk and low reward waiting at the end. In fact, the only reward waiting at the finish line is retaining his already established reputation at the club. The other side of the coin, however, looks far darker than that.

With his return to Santiago Bernabeu, Zidane now has a mountain of a task of achieving success and domination once again because it is the very same standard that he has set for himself back when he was first appointed. Only this time, he is not playing the game on easy with the best squad in Europe anymore.

Now, the tables have turned and the gritty and gloomy part of rebuilding the squad is on his shoulders. The expectations are high but if the first pre-season clashes were any indication, the team is not really firing on all cylinders.

The clock is already ticking and Real Madrid are playing catch-up. The ball is in Zidane’s courtyard but the fence between him and glory has never been higher.

Newcastle United fans aren’t happy with Mike Ashley’s Daily Mail interview

[ad_pod ]

Another day and another reason for Newcastle United fans to turn on owner Mike Ashley.

On this occasion the controversial businessman was interviewed by Martin Samuel for The Daily Mail, and he was asked about a variety of different things regarding the running of the club.

Since Ashley took over, he has overlooked two relegations and one European qualification, while the Magpies are yet to lift a trophy with him at the helm.

The mood had been one lined with tinges of newfound optimism during the past two seasons under Rafa Benitez, but the Spaniard failed to agree a new deal with the club and the rising optimism was stripped away when Steve Bruce was announced as his successor.

In the exclusive interview, Ashley spoke openly about his running of the club, the mistakes he's made, the challenges he faces and the recent reports regarding a potential takeover.

It was the type of interview that was always going to attract plenty of attention amongst Newcastle fans, and they were particularly disgruntled by his comments concerning the club's inability to compete with the top-six.

His admission regarding Tottenham's shirt deal seemed to be a huge point of contention.

Here's what they had to say in response to the interview…

Rangers have made the perfect decision for Glenn Middleton’s development

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Rangers’ prodigious winger Glenn Middleton is nearing the Ibrox exit door, as he looks to complete a loan to Dutch second-tier side NAC Breda.

What’s the story?

As reported by The Daily Record, Steven Gerrard has said that his winger is “very close” to joining Breda on a season-long loan deal.

He had originally been nearing a loan switch to Doncaster Rovers, but saw that deal fall through at the eleventh hour, per The Scottish Sun.

Having watched Jordan Jones, Sheyi Ojo, Greg Stewart and Jake Hastie all arrive at the club this summer, it is no surprise to see a loan exit for Middleton.

As well as the added competition for wide berths, the youngster hardly kicked a ball for the first team after the winter break last term, despite impressing in the first half of the season.

The potential switch will see him join the Eerste Divisie in Holland after Breda were relegated from the Eredivisie last season.

An exciting move

It’s becoming less and less of a surprise seeing British players make the move abroad, whether temporary or permanent, but it remains intriguing nonetheless.

Middleton is a very exciting prospect and deserves to be playing first-team football, having had a breakthrough season last year.

It had become something of a worry during this whirlwind summer at Ibrox that he might get left behind, and have to continue with the reserves. So it’s nice that he’s taken a risk and decided to learn a new culture rather than hope for limited chances at Ibrox or another loan move in Britain.

In choosing the Netherlands and NAC, Middleton will go to a club and country that knows how to develop a youngster. Breda have had a relationship with Manchester City in recent years, taking some of their youngsters on temporary spells, and this set-up could benefit the winger.

Going to a club who know how to deal with talented British teens should give Middleton an advantage that he wouldn’t get at most foreign sides.

Also, in the Dutch second tier, he’ll regularly face players of a similar age in an environment that champions development. AZ, PSV, Ajax and Utrecht all have their youth sides competing in the division alongside 16 other clubs made up of all ages and sizes.

This could be a great halfway house between the youth leagues he was so good in and the senior action that he will hope to rejoin at Rangers once he returns.

It could be a really interesting and profitable move for the youngster as he looks to establish himself as a viable first-team option for Gerrard.

Manchester United’s transfer struggles partly down to Solskjaer’s lack of decisiveness

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

After a rollercoaster of a season ended with the club finishing in sixth in the Premier League, Manchester United were in dire need of an uplifting summer transfer window. Instead, the early excitement generated by the arrivals of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka quickly disappeared, and Harry Maguire became the club’s third and final signing.

Much of the fans’ ire has been directed towards the club’s infamous owners and Ed Woodward, but there is an argument to be made that some of that anger and frustration should be towards Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. According to BBC Sport earlier this summer, the Norwegian has been the driving force behind United’s desire to build a squad around “younger, motivated players” and he would choose his targets “in conjunction with the recruitment department”.

[ad_pod ]

So the accountability behind what United have wanted this summer is there to see. But the Red Devils’ failure to land a marquee player when they were linked with stars like Paulo Dybala, Bruno Fernandes and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, amongst others, is concerning. The logic to build a side around academy products is certainly refreshing, but for a team that finished in sixth, and had a number of embarrassing performances and results, surely significant and proven upgrades were needed.

Instead, Solskjaer’s stubborness in focusing on players who fit a specific profile has left United with gaping holes and great questions about strength in depth. Injuries to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial would leave the club with just a woefully out-of-form Alexis Sanchez, and a 17-year-0ld prospect in Mason Greenwood, as their remaining options up front.

So whilst it’s all the rage for Woodward to bear the brunt of the blame, it’s high-time Solskjaer accepts some responsibility for the way in which United’s transfer window panned out this summer.

Crystal Palace fans want Jason Lokilo to be handed a first-team chance

[ad_pod ]Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to state that they want Jason Lokilo to be handed a chance in the first-team, after the youngster recorded an exquisite assist for the Under-23 side. The Belgium-born DR Congo Under-20 international helped the Eagles record a 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra Under-23s by setting up Kian Flanagan for the game’s only goal, with a delightful drag-back and flick to put his teammate through on goal.

Lokilo, 20, has already made his first-team debut for the Eagles in a League Cup game against Ipswich back when Frank de Boer was in charge, so he is clearly on the radar of Palace’s upper hierarchy.

Having watched his excellent assist, some Palace fans on Twitter want the diminutive attacking midfielder to be handed another chance to prove himself in the first-team.

Two supporters below want him to be given an opportunity on Tuesday night against Colchester in the Carabao Cup, whilst others want him to play some part against Manchester United on Saturday after watching a drab 1-0 loss to Sheffield United last time out.

One other fan has echoed the age-old adage of: “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.”

Let’s see what some of the Palace fans have been saying…

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs urges referees to "protect" Daniel James

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has urged referees to protect Daniel James.

What did he say?

The Wales international endured a difficult night on Monday against Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves, and received boos from the home fans after being booked for diving in the first-half.

Now, Giggs has leapt to the 21-year-old’s defence and insisted it is up to the referees to ensure he remains protected from defenders.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “You’ve seen he gets kicked a lot. Sometimes when you anticipate it, it can look like a dive. The speed he’s going at, it can look worse, but I’m not worried about that. He gets a lot of stick and referees need to protect him.”

Badge of honour

Having enjoyed a dream start to his United career with a goal on his Premier League debut for the club, James was effectively brought down to Earth with a shuddering halt against Wolves. The former Swansea star was unable to use his explosive pace to hurt Nuno’s side, and the opposition certainly did their best to stop him in his tracks with a team-high four fouls being committed against him.

Instead, James’ game was defined by being booked for apparent simulation, and he spent the rest of his time on the pitch being booed by the home fans. It must have been a real chastening experience for the young winger, and it will be up to him to make sure he doesn’t end up building an unwanted reputation of being a diver.

Check out the below above to see football played as you’ve never seen it before… in a maze!

His pace and speed will naturally make things more difficult for officials to spot if he has genuinely been fouled, and it is certainly right to hope that they look out for opposition players looking to target him with strong tackles. But Giggs’ claim of James needing “protection”?

The likes of Wilfried Zaha and Eden Hazard when he was in the Premier League made a career out of almost relishing being two of the most fouled players in the league. It represents something of a badge of honour that players need to resort to ‘dirty tactics’ to stop them. So if anything, James should simply dust himself off, smile and embrace the rough treatment.

Tottenham can’t allow Jan Vertonghen to leave for Bayer Leverkusen

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen could make a shock move to Bayer Leverkusen before the European transfer deadline, per Kicker.

What’s the word?

The Belgium international has not played in any of Spurs’ first three games of the season, with manager Mauricio Pochettino instead favouring a partnership of Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld.

And Kicker now reports that the Bundesliga club have targeted a move for the 32-year-old.

Indeed, Vertonghen is reported to be keen to play first-team football, particularly with Sanchez and Alderweireld seemingly ahead him in the Spurs pecking order.

Madness

Chairman Daniel Levy simply cannot sanction this.

The Spurs chairman would be tearing out one of the club’s best players for a quick buck and with absolutely no opportunity to buy a replacement; the English transfer window, after all, is closed.

It would be tantamount to gross negligence, regardless of Vertonghen’s stance on playing regularly.

Spurs cannot expect Sanchez and Alderweireld to stay fit for the entirety of the campaign and the latter’s compatriot will be needed at some point, even if he isn’t playing regularly.

Selling him now would be madness.

Spurs fans hate newly announced third kit

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans absolutely hate the club’s new third kit.

The club’s official Twitter account announced the new strip on Tuesday, a blue number with a buttoned collar; it will be debuted later in the month, likely in the Champions League.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The effort includes a pattern on the upper half of the kit and is set to join the club’s classic white home kit and their navy away kit as Spurs look to build on their impressive 2018/19 season.

Of course, the third kit last season – a green strip – went down in Spurs’ folklore, with the players wearing it through their miraculous Champions League semi-final victory over Ajax in Amsterdam, as well as their quarter-final second leg win over Manchester City at The Etihad Stadium.

And fans have been left unimpressed by the latest supposed effort, with a number of supporters believing that it is ugly and garish.

Take a look at the best of the reaction on Twitter below!

West Ham must hope Issa Diop isn’t in too much of a rush to play for France

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Following a report in The Telegraph during the summer that suggested West Ham United centre-back Issa Diop was on the verge of a call-up to the senior France squad, the 22-year-old would surely have been hoping his chance was imminent with Aymeric Laporte missing through injury for the latest round of international fixtures.

The call never came though, with Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti the man drafted in by Didier Deschamps instead despite only being a bit-part player for the La Liga outfit in recent times – he hasn’t played a single minute this term, which suggests he was selected because of his name and reputation, rather than for his form.

That first snub may have been disappointing given the former Toulouse man continues to be a consistent starter at the heart of the Irons’ backline, but he would have been buoyed again when it was confirmed that Umtiti himself was pulling out having picked up a foot injury.

Even then, Deschamps decided against calling another centre-back up, which meant that Diop remained in London training with the club who employs him instead.

That surely would have been a bitter blow for the 6 foot 4 defender, given those reports over the summer.

Watch West Ham United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Of course, it is often said that those players featuring for the bigger clubs in Europe are more likely to get attention and receive international honours, and the call-up for Umtiti only backs up that theory.

The problem West Ham have is that they don’t want a player on their hands who will feel that his best opportunity at representing his country is to leave the London Stadium.

As per The Telegraph report previously quoted, Manchester United have shown some potential interest previously, and they are clearly a club that can easily turn a player’s head.

Given the centre-backs in this previous France squad represent Chelsea, Real Madrid, Lyon and Barcelona, Diop already faces a difficult task to displace players playing regularly for those clubs.

West Ham must hope that the 22-year-old isn’t in a rush to make his name for Les Bleus, because if he is then an exit could become increasingly tempting for him, and the interest is clearly there from bigger clubs.
