Everton fans are ready to see Mason Holgate become a regular at the back

Everton fans have voiced their desire to see Mason Holgate become a regular in the club’s defence. Holgate has come into the side this past week, starting against Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford.

The defender has been on the fringes for the majority of the season so far, as his start against the Seagulls was his first in the league so far.

However, the injury to Yerry Mina against West Ham United has finally allowed the Englishman to show Marco Silva what he can do, and fans are definitely impressed.

In midweek, Holgate put in Man of the Match display against Watford where he kept a clean sheet and scored the opening goal. As a result, the centre-back seems to have sparked a recent cry amongst Everton fans for him to start once again this weekend.

A lot of supporters are asking for Michael Keane to be dropped, should both Holgate and Yerry Mina be available. Keane has been in questionable form all season and, with Everton sitting two points above the drop zone, it’s no surprise that there are murmurs of discontent regarding his form.

Up next for the Toffees is the visit of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Here’s what some Everton fans have said about the in-form defender…

QPR: Todd Kane must bring his A-game up against Hull’s Kamil Grosicki

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

QPR travel to the KCOM Stadium this Saturday to take on Hull, where a win for the Londoners could potentially put them level on points with the Championship’s current leaders West Brom.

Mark Warburton’s side have enjoyed a decent start to the campaign, sitting comfortably in 9th place – just three points off the summit.

Grant McCann’s Hull contrastingly find themselves 16th, just five points off the relegation zone.

Despite the difference in the pair’s start to the season, one potential QPR weak link must keep an eye out for a player who is arguably one of the Tigers’ most dangerous.

Who is it?

Kamil Grosicki.

The 72-cap Poland international has been in fine form for Hull so far this season.

Grosicki has scored four goals and has also grabbed an assist in 11 Championship appearances this term, earning a nomination for the September Player of the Month award for his efforts.

The forward averages 3.2 shots per game and also registers two key passes per game, proving that he is an efficient operator in the final third.

The 31-year-old tends to line up on the left flank, as he has done 11 times already this season, where he will come up against a player who has not been at his best in 2019/20 so far and will need to bring his A-game.

Todd Kane must be focused

Todd Kane – who has made eight appearances this season at right-back for QPR – should be the man directly up against Grosicki, and he really needs to improve on his form.

The 26-year-old was woeful in a recent 2-0 loss to West Brom, losing possession 25 times while also having his showing against the Baggies ridiculed by Gareth Dixon of R’s podcast Ranger Things.

“His performance against West Brom was one of the worst I’ve seen from a full-back”

On that day, he struggled against a tricky player in Grady Diangana, so he must bring a better level of performance with him to the KCOM Stadium or else QPR may get burned by Grosicki’s brilliance.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk must buck the youth trend at the club

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Two of the oldest squads in the Championship went head-to-head last night as Cardiff City hosted Sheffield Wednesday to kickstart the league’s return from the international break.

The Owls’ average squad age is the highest amongst the division at 28.1 with the Bluebirds following close behind in second with an average age of 27.6, per Transfermarkt.

It’s a cause for concern for Garry Monk as highlighted here, but what is potentially even more worrying is the fact that no player under the age of 23 has played a single minute for the club in the league.

What sort of message does that send to the club’s promising youngsters and the academy as a whole?

The attitude at Hillsborough has very much swayed in quick fashion over the last few years.

When Jos Luhukay took charge from Carlos Carvalhal, he inherited a large squad that was injury-stricken and ageing, so he took it upon himself to promote several youngsters into the senior fold.

The likes of Alex Hunt, Fraser Preston, Conor Kirby, Jordan Thorniley, and Jack Lee all featured at some stage – the former Owls boss even froze out Keiren Westwood, Sam Hutchinson, and George Boyd to try and implement this fresh and youthful vision.

But with football being a cut-throat results-driven business, the Dutchman struggled at the helm, and since then, the direct pathway from the academy to the first-team set up has blocked.

Garry Monk has taken small measures to change that attitude by allowing Conor Grant and Hunt among others to train with the senior team, but that’s not enough to benefit the future just yet.The 40-year-old said this soon after being appointed: “The point of a manager when you use young players is not just to put them in for the sake of it.Some clubs like to do that for the PR side of it, but my job as a manager is to have a good look at young players.“He, of course, has a very valid point, but this current crop of players – all in their late 20s and early 30s – are soon to enter the twilight of their careers. This could well be the last window of opportunity if they are to reach the promised land. Therefore, Monk needs to start breeding through the youth as early as possible, and he is definitely the right man to do it based on his track record at his former teams.Lewis Wing (Middlesbrough), Jude Bellingham (Birmingham), and Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United) can all thank their ex-manager for giving them the opportunity. It just needs to happen in south Yorkshire now.

Real Madrid fans were impressed with Alphonse Areola against Osasuna

Alphonse Areola made his official debut for Real Madrid just this Wednesday when he started in between the sticks for Los Blancos against Osasuna.

Zinedine Zidane’s troops managed to cruise to a rather impressive 2-0 victory on the night and are now top of the La Liga table.

Areola did not have much to do throughout the night as Osasuna couldn’t even tally a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu, but it was still enough to win over many of the Madridistas.

Loads of them swarmed Twitter and social media after the game to shower the 26-year-old goalkeeper with praise and messages of support.

Many of them also seem to think he should start every single game for the Galacticos moving forward and they already see him as superior to Thibaut Courtois.

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane is one of the best in the world, says Cesc Fabregas

Who is the third best player in the world? With Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo seemingly having the top two spots sewn up over the last decade or so – there is a lot of debate to be had about which player sits just behind those two.Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Eden Hazard, Virgil van Dijk and Neymar would all be fair shouts, but Cesc Fabregas believes there is another name that belongs in the conversation.

The former Arsenal midfielder stated that Sadio Mane is one of the three best players in the world, and you can understand why he thinks that.

The Senegalese winger won the Premier League Golden Boot last term, and he was a key man in Liverpool’s Champions League win.

He’s carried that form into the new season as well, as he’s already found the net four times in the Premier League this term, and on Wednesday he opened his Champions League account against Red Bull Salzburg.

Leeds fans react to Phil Hay’s centenary badge report

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday, journalist Phil Hay reported on Leeds’ new club badge which will be introduced in the 2019/20 season to celebrate their centenary, with the new design set to be worn on next term’s home and away shirts but reverted back to normal the year after.

The adjustments are minimal, as is probably preferable in order to avoid fan outrage. The famous shield remains but the letters ‘LUFC’ have been replaced by ‘Leeds United’ and ‘100 years’, written on golden banners above and below the crest respectively.

The Whites will be hoping that the new crest will be accompanied by a Premier League badge on the sleeve, as they enter an exciting final period of the campaign – automatic promotion is within touching distance for the Yorkshire outfit but they must be careful not to drop any more points from here.

Who do you want to see promoted this year? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked their 3 favoured teams in the video below…

West Brom announced themselves in the title race on Tuesday night with a last-gasp win at QPR and Leeds will be hoping they can leave the Baggies in the dust on Saturday by taking all three points from their clash with Bolton.

Journalist Phil Hay Tweeted his coverage of Leeds’ new badge on Wednesday, including an image of it. Here’s what the Elland Road faithful had to say about it on Twitter, with many supporters far from impressed…

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brushes off Marcus Rashford’s poor form

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by Sky Sports, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted he is not worried about Marcus Rashford’s poor form.

What did he say?

The England international has scored three times in the current campaign, but two of those strikes came courtesy of the penalty spot.

Against FC Astana in the Europa League on Thursday, the 21-year-old drew a blank, but Solskjaer has waved off any potential concerns with the striker.

He said: “I don’t worry about that, he’s getting the chances. Of course he could have scored three (against Astana), but the goalkeeper made a few fantastic saves. We’re working every single day in training with Marcus and he wants to improve and he wants to be better. He could have finished with his left foot instead of his right once, but it was just one of those days.

“He’s still young, he’ll improve and you won’t hit your peak as a striker until you’re 26 or 27. He’s still learning what finishes to make in different circumstances. I think today’s forwards are different from the old, traditional number nines. There’s not many left of them and Marcus can play three or four positions.”

No room for excuses

Having previously been public about his preference to play through the middle, Rashford really cannot have any excuses when it comes to his poor form. The striker was guilty of several missed opportunities against Astana, registering five shots at goal but failing to hit the back of the net.

The injury to Anthony Martial has opened the door for him to establish his place at the top of the team, but with each passing game without a goal from open play, the naysayers will continue to get louder. The likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez were let go this summer to give Rashford et al a chance. He needs to make absolutely sure he doesn’t spurn it.

Romano explains failed Amrabat transfer to Spurs

Writing on social media, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has explained why Tottenham Hotspur didn’t sign Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

The Lowdown: Spurs reach ‘agreement’…

As per reports, it appeared at one stage that the Lilywhites were all but certain to sign the Morocco international.

Indeed, claims from Italy suggested that Spurs had reached an ‘agreement’ to sign Amrabat with manager Antonio Conte personally ‘waiting’ for his arrival in north London (Corriere Fiorentino via Sport Witness).

Romano also stated that the player himself was ‘waiting for Tottenham’ and ‘wanted’ to join (YouTube via The Boot Room), with the reporter now explaining why the transfer didn’t materialise.

The Latest: Romano explains ‘collapsed’ 11th hour move…

Taking to Twitter, he claimed a potential move to Spurs ‘collapsed’ in the 11th hour.

“Sofyan Amrabat will not be allowed to leave Fiorentina in the last hours of the window,” he stated on deadline day.

“Erick Pulgar leaves to join Galatasaray, done deal – so Fiorentina need Amrabat to stay.

“Tottenham potential move has collapsed.”

The Verdict: Big miss?

The 27-cap midfield dynamo, called a ‘bargain’ player by ex-Palermo sporting director Rino Foschi, won’t exactly be a big miss for Spurs despite that plaudit.

Tottenham instead landed a 2018 World Cup gem in Rodrigo Bentancur and one who can add real steal to Conte’s midfield, as evident by his impressive average of 2.8 tackles per 90 in the Champions League this season (WhoScored).

That’s the joint most of any Juve player and it’s safe to say that his signing will boost Spurs in their hunt for a top four place.

Newcastle agree Dylan Stephenson deal

Newcastle correspondent Lee Ryder has stated that the club have agreed a deal with young forward Dylan Stephenson.

The Lowdown: ‘Big news’

Labelled as ‘hard-working’ by academy manager Neil Winskill, the teenager has impressed playing for the club’s youth teams over recent years.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-4/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 19-year-old has scored 32 times in total for Newcastle’s under-18s and under-23s, with 11 of those coming in 2021/22.

Reports emerged in the week that the centre-forward was set to pen a new deal at St James’ Park, something that Liam Kennedy described as ‘big news’.

The Latest: Ryder’s claim on Stephenson

Ryder shared a Newcastle notebook on The Chronicle on Saturday morning, addressing multiple Magpies updates.

One of those focused on discussions over new deals, with the journalist admitting that a deal for Stephenson has been agreed. The youngster looks set for a loan deal away from the club next season, with Hartlepool a destination already mentioned.

The Verdict: Exciting

Stephenson is clearly an exciting young talent, so knowing that he is going to commit his future to Newcastle is good news.

While the club now have the option to splash the cash in the summer transfer window following a change of ownership, it is positive that they still want to keep hold of their best young assets.

Hopefully Stephenson will continue to score goals for fun next season, which could result in a first-team breakthrough at St James’ Park.

Everton fans react to Niko Kovac rumour

Niko Kovac has emerged as a potential candidate for the vacant manager’s role at Everton.

The Telegraph’s Jason Burt says that the 50-year-old’s name is ‘being pushed’ as the Toffees assess their options, and the Croatian is apparently keen to have a crack at the Premier League.

Everton sacked Rafael Benitez in the wake of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Norwich City. It is their second managerial search in the space of eight months after Carlo Ancelotti left in June.

An overview of Kovac

Kovac has managed three clubs – Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich and AS Monaco. The Croatian succeeded Jupp Heynckes at Bayern after taking Eintracht from relegation territory to the top half.

However, he was sacked by the Bavarian giants in November 2019, 16 months after taking charge, following a 5-1 defeat at the hands of his former club. He had managed to win a league-and-cup double in his first season at the helm in Munich (via BBC Sport).

Kovac’s next stop, in the summer of 2020, was Monaco, but he was dismissed earlier this month with the team sixth in Ligue 1.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed Burt’s claim, and here’s what these Everton supporters made of it, with many in favour of seeing Kovac getting the Goodison Park gig.
