Leeds on "alert" for star loved by Jurgen Klopp, he'll pick new club "soon"

Leeds United may have seen the transfer window slam shut, but they are still in the race to bring in a former Premier League star who is on the free agent market, according to a report.

Leeds United miss out on Josh Brownhill

Despite the Whites showing an interest in Josh Brownhill, the former Burnley midfielder won’t be moving to Elland Road after leaving Turf Moor for a new challenge elsewhere. Instead, the Warrington-born man is set for a surprise move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab, with Graeme Bailey detailing on X that he has knocked back advances from several Premier League clubs to sign a lucrative deal in the Middle East.

He stated: “Josh Brownhill has agreed terms on his move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab. Brownhill shunned interest from Wolves, Everton and Leeds whilst also rebuffing a late approach from Brentford. He is now due for his medical ahead of penning a two-year-deal worth £100,000-a-week.”

Injuries to Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu have left Leeds light in midfield. At the same time, Joe Rodon recently pulled out of Wales’ double header against Kazakhstan and Canada, albeit he is expected to recover in time to face Fulham.

Nevertheless, a disappointing end to the window has left Leeds a body or two short from middle to front, factoring in circumstances, something that Chelsea’s late hijack of their move for Facundo Buonanotte didn’t help.

Senne Lammens was also approached by Leeds before choosing to move to Manchester United, capping off a frustrating final few hours of the market.

Nevertheless, there could still be some out-of-window action at the Whites, with Daniel Farke set to fight to strengthen their engine room with the arrival of a renowned free agent.

Leeds United battling to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are looking to sign former Premier League midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on a free transfer after he was released by Besiktas.

Pete O’Rourke explained the situation: “Now that he’s left Besiktas, clubs have been put on alert by his availability. There’s interest from clubs in the Premier League, Championship and across Europe as well, with Leeds and Birmingham among them. So I’m sure he’d be ready to return to England after a couple of years away, and I expect there will be some movement on his future soon.”

Praised by Jurgen Klopp for his double against Genk in the Champions League back in 2019, the former England international is now 32 years of age and scored once in 20 appearances across all competitions last season.

Now looking to get back to familiar surroundings, he may find a home at Elland Road due to Farke’s shortage of midfielders, offering leadership and experience if the Whites can beat Birmingham City to his signature.

Rahul joins DC team but availability for season opener not confirmed yet

The uncertainty over KL Rahul’s availability for Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2025 opener against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Visakhapatnam continues even though he has joined the team. DC’s new captain Axar Patel confirmed that because of “personal” reasons Rahul may or not may play the first game. DC’s new head coach Hemang Badani also kept Rahul’s batting position in “suspense” and said people will have to “wait and watch” until Monday.”Obviously, he joined the team,” Axar said of Rahul’s availability. “We don’t know yet [if he’ll play]. Right now we don’t know if he is available or not.”Related

Axar takes over the DC captaincy from Rishabh Pant, who was bought by LSG, and looking at the high-scoring trends in the IPL since last season, said his team will have to “evolve” to keep up with the changing times. After scoring the highest IPL team total of 287 last season, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) came very close to breaking their own record in the second game of the season when they racked up 286 against Rajasthan Royals while Axar was speaking in Visakhapatnam.”Nowadays cricket has changed a lot,” Axar said. “Mostly IPL is more about batsman’s game, fours and sixes. So we have to evolve as a team. At the end of the day, I don’t want to complicate things. As captain I told the group that cricket is a game, keep it simple. A good yorker is a good yorker ball and if your execution is good, then you will be fine. So I am not telling them too much that you should go for this and that. I am just asking them to keep it simple, that’s my strategy throughout the tournament.Axar Patel leads the team talk in his first season as captain in the IPL•Delhi Capitals

“We learn from the last season, I said that cricket has evolved too much. From the last season we learned that you have to be ahead of the game. You can’t be chasing the game. It’s not like in the powerplay we have to swing the ball or we have to bowl length balls. We can even start from two-three slower balls. So it’s not any particular plan for any batsman. We have to change the plan according to the situation which I learned from the last season.”Axar and Badani both welcomed the two new rules of using the saliva on the ball and the sides bowling second in evening games having the option of changing the ball after the 10th over to try and counter the challenge of dew in the chase. Badani said the rules were in the “right direction” to bring “back the balance between bat and ball”.”The IPL is all about the batsmen nowadays. So if we get something for the bowlers, it’s very nice to see,” Axar said. “Now we can allow the saliva and if something is there for the bowlers, it’s great for the game also and for the bowlers, they can find that reverse swing at the end. Also in most of the venues in the IPL, the dew factor is there. So if after 10th over the fresh ball [option] is there, they are good rules and it’s very good for the bowlers. They have something to execute and they might find it easier [to stop the runs].”DC have never won the IPL in 17 years so far and handed Axar the captaincy over Rahul, who has led India in the past, and Faf du Plessis, who has captained South Africa and still leads in the SA20. Axar hoped to draw experience from them.”Our mindset is going there to express ourselves, be fearless and we are all ready to give our 100% and the players are also really enjoying the atmosphere here in DC family. We are ready to roll.”I am very confident about the Delhi Capitals team. I am playing since 2019 for Delhi Capitals and I have grown as a cricketer in this franchise. It’s an honour for me to lead this franchisee and there are many leaders in our team. So from them I get that experience and they are there for me. Faf is there, KL is there and many experienced players are there. So we have a good balanced team. And we will change the results this time.”

Tottenham offer Yves Bissouma in swap deal for "maverick" £60m playmaker

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is still looking to bolster Spurs’ attacking ranks before the transfer deadline in four days’ time, and given their previous luck this window, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them scrambling till the eleventh hour.

Thomas Frank watched on as his side failed to secure the signings of Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, both in spectacular fashion.

Gibbs-White saw his once-advanced move to N17 blocked by Nottingham Forest, who wrote a letter to Spurs threatening legal action, as weeks of back and forth between the clubs ensued before the 25-year-old signed a new contract regardless.

Meanwhile, Tottenham were convinced they’d land Eze at one stage – having agreed personal terms with the player and the finances of a deal with Crystal Palace – only for Arsenal to swoop in and hijack the transfer.

Their need for a number 10 is glaring, having lost both Dejan Kulusevski to a knee injury earlier this year and James Maddison to an ACL rupture in pre-season.

FFC Spurs – James Maddison

At one point, Frank was planning to head into 25/26 with a fully fit Maddison and Gibbs-White, only to now have neither. In an ideal world, it’s been reported that the Dane would like two new playmakers (Gary Jacob), but that scenario looks near-impossible barring a last-gasp miracle.

In terms of who they could bring in, Spurs are in the market for a new centre-back, number 10 and a winger.

One of the playmakers on their radar is West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta, and the Hammers are reportedly open to selling, if their asking price is met, and they can source a replacement (Paul O’Keefe).

The Brazil international would be Spurs’ second signing of the window from their London rivals after a £55m deal for Mohammed Kudus, which also ended an unofficial transfer embargo between the two clubs spanning 14 years.

Tottenham offered Yves Bissouma in swap deal for Lucas Paqueta

According to TBR Football and journalist Graeme Bailey, Levy and the Spurs recruitment team actually made a unique proposal for Paqueta recently, involving Galatasaray-linked Yves Bissouma.

Bailey reports that Tottenham offered Bissouma in a direct swap deal for the Brazil international, and the talks centered around Paqueta going the other way on a straight loan.

Bissouma also would’ve departed for the London Stadium on a dry temporary deal, but it is believed that negotiations didn’t progress to the final details and the Mali international has now agreed to join Galatasaray instead.

According to other reports, West Ham want £60 million to part company with Paqueta, so Spurs will need to head back to the negotiating table.

Anthony Gordon compares Nick Woltemade to England 'quarterback' Harry Kane & explains how Newcastle's £69m frontman has positively impacted his game

Anthony Gordon has compared Nick Woltemade to England "quarterback" Harry Kane and explained how Newcastle's £69 million ($93m) frontman has positively impacted his game. Woltemade has exploded onto the scene at Newcastle with four goals in his first six appearances, three of which came in the span of just seven days against Arsenal, Union Saint-Gilloise, and Nottingham Forest before the international break.

Instant impact on Tyneside

Woltemade's start to life at St James’ Park has been nothing short of electric. Slotting seamlessly into Eddie Howe’s front three, Woltemade has quickly built devastating chemistry with Gordon and Anthony Elanga, creating a fluid, unpredictable attack that’s giving defences nightmares. The trio’s link-up play was on full display during Newcastle's 4-0 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League, where their interchanging runs and quick combinations left the opposition gasping for breath. For Gordon, it’s not just about the goals; it’s about the footballing intelligence Woltemade brings.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportGordon's high praise for Woltemade

Speaking ahead of England duty, Gordon couldn’t hide his admiration for his new team-mate and dropped a headline-grabbing comparison with Bayern Munich talisman Kane that’s sure to delight Newcastle fans.

"I think they do play a very similar style of football, in terms of they want to almost be the quarterback – they want to come in and create, they don't just want to finish the chances like a typical striker would do," he said. "For me, personally, I think it helps me – I think my style suits playing with that style of striker, because I can run off them. If defenders want to go and engage with them, I can run off the back, so I think it's really positive for me and I really enjoy it."

Blend of brains and brawn

When Newcastle paid £69 million to sign the Germany international, eyebrows were raised, but Woltemade has wasted no time justifying the fee. His early performances have drawn admiration from fans, while his calmness under pressure has impressed Howe. Despite his towering 6ft 6in frame, the former VFB Stuttgart striker isn’t a one-dimensional battering ram. He’s as likely to pick out a clever pass as he is to smash the ball into the top corner, and that blend of brains and brawn is exactly what Newcastle’s attack had been missing after Alexander Isak was sold off to Liverpool.

Getty Images SportGordon eyes England glory next

With club form soaring, Gordon is now turning his attention to England’s upcoming fixtures, a friendly against Wales on Friday, followed by a crucial World Cup qualifier versus Latvia three days later. The Newcastle winger is in one of the best spells of his career and knows that strong international performances could cement his place in Thomas Tuchel’s plans ahead of the 2026 World Cup. And if his partnership with Woltemade continues to blossom back at St James’ Park, Gordon’s evolution from a promising winger to a world-class forward may just be getting started.

Após a partida, Pato explicou o porquê de ter escolhido esta comemoração. De acordo com as palavras do jogador, era algo que já estava planejado há algum tempo.

– Já tinha pensado há muito tempo, hoje tive uma oportunidade especial. Pulei, ele estava do meu lado.

Quero fazer história no São Paulo – finalizou.

Jose Mourinho told Benfica is the right 'calibre' for him by Real Madrid president as coach reveals message from his former team

Jose Mourinho revealed that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez sent a message to him upon his return to Benfica. The Portuguese head coach said that his former boss told him he was happy to see him return "to a club of your calibre", reminding fans once again of the mutual love and admiration shared between the two men.

Mourinho has returned to Benfica after 25 years

After being sacked by Fenerbahce for failing to qualify for the league phase of this season's Champions League, Mourinho marked an immediate return to coaching by signing for Benfica, the club where it all began for 'The Special One' in 2000. Mourinho will remain with Benfica until June 2027, although a surprise 'break clause' has been inserted in the contract which will allow both sides to part ways earlier than the expiry of the contract.

Right after he returned to Benfica, Mourinho received messages from Perez, the president of his former club. "I'd like to say that President Florentino sent me a message saying, 'I'm very happy that you've returned to a club of your calibre,' and to hear this from the president of Real Madrid himself," Mourinho revealed.

A reunion with Real Madrid in January

Mourinho arrived at the Bernabeu in 2010 after firing Inter to a historic continental treble. In his three years as Los Blancos' head coach, the Portuguese won three titles, including La Liga in 2011-12 and the Copa del Rey in 2010-11. In 2013, Perez urged Mourinho to prolong his stay at Madrid, but the 62-year-old felt his time was up. Now, Mourinho will face the Merengues for the first time over 12 years after parting ways with them, when Benfica welcome Xabi Alonso's side at the Estadio da Luz in the final league phase matchday of the Champions League in January.

Man Utd ready to trigger release clause for £34m+ star similar to Upamecano

Manchester United pushed the boat out during the summer transfer window and now seem to be planning on their next capture ahead of the market opening for business again in January.

Manchester United set to offload Andre Onana on loan

The English transfer window is now closed and Ruben Amorim will need to work with the players at his disposal for the time being, though he is in the process of sanctioning a departure that could be announced imminently.

Fabrizio Romano has reported on X that Andre Onana is set to leave on loan to join Trabzonspor, in a deal that will contain no loan fee or option to buy the player once his agreement comes to an end.

Andre Onana in action for Manchester United.

Concern over Onana’s performances at Manchester United have existed for a long time and his exit will be seen as a timely one by many supporters.

High-profile errors and the weight of the number one jersey at Old Trafford have left the Cameroon international seeking a new challenge, especially after Senne Lammens’ £18.2 million arrival from Royal Antwerp.

Speaking about the realities of Onana’s situation, Roy Carroll has given his own account of the difficulties he faced when between the sticks at the Red Devils, claiming that mental toughness is key for Amorim’s chosen stopper moving forward.

He stated: “It’s not easy playing for Manchester United at the moment, but it was hard back then because everyone was expecting the new Peter Schmeichel.

“Even then, if you made a mistake, it was big news. You had to be mentally strong and that is still the case. But we are not robots; we are all human beings. It is not so much what you do on the pitch as what you do off it.”

With a change of the guard within Manchester United’s backline apparent, the next domino could be about to fall once the January window opens.

Manchester United plan to trigger Dani Vivian's release clause

Onana’s exit will leave Lammens between the sticks, and reports in Spain claim Manchester United could look to trigger Athletic Club defender Dani Vivian’s release clause in January, which stands at the £34.7 million mark.

Deemed similar to Dayot Upamecano by FBRef, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also keen on the Spain international, who has made 152 appearances for Athletic Club, registering seven goals and two assists.

Seen as a market opportunity due to his favourable value, Vivian has already won five tackles and made 16 recoveries in La Liga this term, per Fotmob, illustrating his capacity to sniff out dangerous opportunities.

Harry Maguire is into the final year of his Manchester United contract, prompting interest from Saudi Pro League clubs in a money-spinning move for the England international.

With the Red Devils’ veteran at risk of departing, Vivian could be a natural replacement if circumstances align at Old Trafford over the coming months.

Man Utd racing Barcelona for "wonderful" rising star who idolises Van Dijk

Manchester United are now racing Barcelona for the signature of a “wonderful” rising star, who’s keen on a move to the Premier League.

Man Utd set sights on another young defender

It has been a subpar start to the season for Man United, with being knocked out of the EFL Cup by Grimsby Town a low point, but young defender Leny Yoro has managed to catch the eye, having been singled out for praise by Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand said: “Leny Yoro’s got pace, going to get more time. Yeah, I love him. I think his ceiling, I don’t know where his ceiling, how high, [it] could be anything. He just needs the pieces around him as well to help him as a young kid, but I think he has the nucleus of all the right traits to be a top centre-half and he will be because he wants to be.”

Yoro has started all three Premier League games up to this point, forming a partnership with Matthijs De Ligt and Harry Maguire, who is now arguably in the latter stages of his career at 32.

As such, it now appears as though United are looking to bring in a long-term replacement for Maguire, having joined the race for a rising star.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states Man United are battling the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Chelsea for the signature of Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman, having consistently scouted the 18-year-old.

Bouwman, who idolises Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, is said to have world-class potential, which explains the interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and the teenager has previously made it clear he would be keen on a move to England.

The Ajax defender said: “The top four of the Premier League is my ultimate dream, although playing at the top in Spain or another major footballing country would also be amazing.”

"Wonderful" Bouwman is one for the future

Despite his age, the youngster has already managed to force his way into the Ajax team, helping his side keep a clean sheet against Telstar back in August, having previously impressed scout Antonio Mango at youth level.

In the 2-0 victory over Telstar, the young centre-back made 10 defensive actions, the joint-highest number of any player on the pitch, while also winning three duels.

That said, Bouwman has still only made one senior appearance for Ajax, so it is perhaps too early to judge whether he would be a suitable signing for Man United, despite showing the hallmarks of a future star.

Gerrard's "top-class" Rangers star is worth £8m more than Aarons after exit

Glasgow Rangers have had an issue in both of the full-back positions in the first month or so of the season in all competitions under Russell Martin.

Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz both left the club on permanent deals and Jayden Meghoma arrived on loan from Brentford, which means that the only natural left-back in the squad is a young and inexperienced loanee.

On the other side of the pitch, Max Aarons joined on loan from Bournemouth to compete with James Tavernier for a starting berth at right-back, but has failed to impress.

Why Max Aarons has been underwhelming for Rangers

The former England U21 international started the season as a first-choice full-back, at left-back and then at right-back, but found himself as an unused substitute in the 0-0 draw with Celtic last weekend.

Aarons was left on the bench after he was sent off against Club Brugge in the opening minutes of the 6-0 loss to the Belgian side for hauling down his former teammate Christos Tzolis.

In the three Scottish Premiership matches that the defender did start, the loanee failed to create a single ‘big chance’ for his team, and his lack of height and physicality was on display as he failed to win a single aerial duel, per Sofascore.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Whilst Aarons has been underwhelming and may find himself on the bench behind Tavernier for the time being, Rangers may look back and wonder what could have been with Nathan Patterson.

Nathan Patterson's current market value

In January 2022, Ross Wilson and Giovanni van Bronckhorst sanctioned the sale of the Scotland international to Everton for an initial fee of £11m.

Everton right-back Nathan Patterson

That seemed like a great deal at the time, given that he was behind Tavernier in the pecking order, but they may look back on that decision as a howler when they consider how the situation has evolved in that position since then.

Patterson, whose deliveries into the box were hailed as “top class” by Steven Gerrard, is currently worth £13m, per Transfermarkt, and that is £8m more than Aarons’ market value of £5m.

Billy Gilmour

£17m

Nathan Patterson

£13m

Greg Taylor

£5m

Lewis Morgan

£3m

Ryan Hardie

£1.5m

As you can see in the table above, Billy Gilmour is the only former Rangers academy talent who is currently worth more than the Scottish right-back, whose value has risen by £2m since his move to Everton.

The 23-year-old defender has played 59 times for the Toffees, including 49 times in the Premier League, per Transfermarkt, and been capped 23 times by Scotland at senior level.

Everton defender Nathan Patterson.

No permanent player within the Rangers squad is worth more than Patterson, per Transfermarkt, and this suggests that he could be the most valuable player at the club if they had not sold him back in 2022.

The Scottish right-back could have continued his development at Ibrox under Tavernier’s guidance before eventually taking his place as the first-choice right-back, which is something Aarons is already struggling to do.

Left for £0: Rangers lost a Rothwell upgrade who was "like Souness"

Glasgow Rangers once had a star who was compared to Graeme Souness, then he left for nothing.

ByDan Emery Sep 3, 2025

Instead, Van Bronckhorst and Wilson cashed in on him and now the Light Blues are in a position where they have an underwhelming Aarons, on current evidence, competing for a starting berth in that role, instead of an incredibly gifted academy graduate who has now proven himself in the Premier League.
