Lewis released from prison

Chris Lewis, the former England allrounder, has been released from prison after serving six years for drug smuggling.Lewis, 47, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in May 2009 for smuggling liquid cocaine valued at more than £140,000 into Britain hidden in fruit juice tins in his cricket bag. He was stopped at Gatwick airport after a flight from St Lucia the previous December.A former basketball player, Chad Kirnon, was also found guilty.”On a physical level jail has not been hard,” Lewis said after his release from High Down Prison in Surrey. “It’s a hard mental exercise to stop yourself from thinking negatively. For 24 hours a day you’re a prisoner. It’s nice to be back – and I don’t mean being outside – I mean back being me.”Far from excluding Lewis from its midst, English cricket – in the guise of the Professional Cricketers Association – plans to work with him to educate young players. Lewis will speak to first year county professionals at next year’s PCA Rookie Camp and also join the PCA team on the Association’s programme of pre-season county visits. This is the latest example of the PCA’s willingness to rehabilitate former cricketers who have committed a crime by involving them in education processes. Mervyn Westfield, who was found guilty of spot fixing, has also addressed young professionals about the dangers.Lewis, born in Guyana, retired from county cricket in 2000 after playing 32 Tests and 53 ODIs. Widely regarded as a talented maverick. He last played first-class cricket the summer before his arrest when he attempted a Twenty20 comeback with Surrey. He worked for Nottingham City Council and was also involved with coaching in Slough when he retired in 2000 but admitted he became afraid of what the future held and he ended up making poor decisions that led to him being jailed.”You are playing cricket, perhaps even hoping to get back into the England team, and within the space of a few months it’s actually all over,” he said. “There wasn’t a great deal of information around then for young players about what they should be doing or trying to do.”Yes, you heard the stories about having to plan for your future because cricket doesn’t last forever but what does that mean?”At the time I thought that planning was taking out a pension or taking out a life insurance which are things that I actually did. Standing here now you know planning is a lot more and it takes a lot more time and effort.”You try different things to try to generate cash. You are not talking about the same level of cash as when you played. You are talking about a level of cash that, now you are living a normal life – to sort that out. Coming back to play T20 for Surrey, that didn’t work and at the same time the old hips played up.”I had spent a bit of money. I had been away to Australia to train to try to get fit to come back to do the Twenty20 so money had been spent and nothing had been earned. I became afraid of what the future held and at that point the thinking actually went awry.Chris Lewis will work with the PCA educating young players after his release from prison•Getty Images

“I made choices that I shouldn’t have made and that were the wrong choices and that, in the end. I should say sorry for because they were the wrong choices, and I do say sorry for.”Jason Ratcliffe, assistant chief executive of the PCA, has remained in contact with Lewis throughout his time in prison and hopes that Lewis’s willingness to speak about his experiences will help current county players.”Whilst we can’t ever condone the trouble Chris got himself into, it’s our duty to help our members wherever we can,” Ratcliffe said. “It’s time to move forward and his story will prove to be a strong message for all current and future professional cricketers.”Lewis has been quick to express his gratitude. “The PCA has been extremely supportive right from the beginning of this situation,” he said. “Going ahead, I would like to become a part of that, whether it’s giving advice or whether it’s just tugging on the grey matter to find out what happened at this particular time.”If any of that can help any young player going ahead I am in. I am in 100 per cent.”As his career drew to a close, Lewis made revelations in the News of the World about spot-fixing within the England Test team, also claiming that he been offered money on behalf of Indian bookmakers to help fix an England vs New Zealand match at Old Trafford. He was not in the side at the time.

'Players have let Peter Moores down' – Moles

Andy Moles has expressed his sympathy for Peter Moores, suggesting England’s players “let him down” during the World Cup campaign.Moles, the Afghanistan coach, will be doing everything he can to inflict more pain on Moores and co when the two sides meet at the SCG on Friday. But as a man who knows the pain of a coach’s life – he was sacked by Scotland and New Zealand – Moles was keen to show solidarity with a fellow coach.”I hear the criticism of Peter,” Moles said. “But as a coach, I feel sorry for him. We do what we can, but ultimately when they cross the line, the players have to do the job.”The players have just underperformed. It just looked to me as if the players have let themselves down, and importantly, let the coach down. That’s not to say that Peter’s place won’t come up under scrutiny. But I feel sorry for him. He’s obviously worked hard, and I hear from the players that they feel that they’ve let him and other people down.”It’s a collective thing. The coach doesn’t win, the players don’t win. Everybody has to take collective ability. Really, they need to have a look at themselves and there obviously need to be some changes. But I think the big thing is not to rush into anything. They need to take stock.”Such is England’s fragile state, though, that Moles knows his side have an opportunity to pull off a victory against a Full Member side and finish their campaign above them in the table.”We believe that we’ve got a shot in us,” Moles said. “We came here expecting to surprise somebody. We nearly got it right with Sri Lanka, and if we can be consistent and do the things well at the right times, I still believe that we have a shot in us. But we’ll have to be at our very best and we’ll need England to be below par. Everybody has an equal chance.”The suggestion that both teams have an “equal chance” might be the perfect illustration of how far England have fallen and how far Afghanistan have progressed. But as far as Moles – referred to as “Mole” by fast bowler Hamid Hassan throughout the press conference – is concerned, Afghanistan are at the start of their cricketing journey. With the enthusiasm that exists for the sport in the country, he is confident progress will continue. The only thing they require is more fixtures.”The one thing that we’ve got that some of the other Associate sides don’t have, is a group of 20 or 25 players from under-19 level. And in that group there are probably eight to ten very, very exciting youngsters. Three of them are good seamers.”There is huge passion and our facilities are adequate. We’ve got indoor cricket now. We’ve got an academy that could improve, but it’s adequate. We don’t need so much in the way of new machinery and things like that.”What we need are fixtures. We want to win friends and impress people through this tournament.”Afghanistan is not just a war-torn area. It’s a promising group of cricketers. If we can persuade people to give us the opportunity to play against them in the UAE where we played our home games, then I think that will be the best way that our players can move forward and get better.”They’re a very passionate group of cricketers that have huge pride in their performance for the fans at home. That’s something that drives them.”The secret of the World Cup is in the name. We should be getting more teams to play, so hopefully the ICC will go back to their board meeting and re-examine their decision.”We need the opportunity to play more. I speak on behalf of the nations just below us as well. What we desperately deserve is opportunity.”

Felipe Melo, graças a efeito suspensivo, poderá atuar. O time fará mais dois treinos, na sexta e no sábado, antes de seguir para o Rio de Janeiro (RJ). O embate, válido pela 17ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, está marcado para as 16h.

Emrit named T&T four-day captain, Ramdin alleges 'victimisation'

West Indies’ Test captain Denesh Ramdin believes he has been axed as captain of the Trinidad & Tobago squad for the forthcoming four-day championship and has alleged that he is being “victimised”

Renaldo Matadeen04-Nov-2014West Indies’ Test captain Denesh Ramdin believes he has been axed as captain of the Trinidad & Tobago squad for the forthcoming domestic four-day tournament and has alleged, in an interview with , that he is being “victimised”. Allrounder Rayad Emrit has been named captain of the T&T side. Patrick Rampersad, a vice-president of the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), has denied Ramdin’s allegation.Ramdin said he had met the TTCB executive on November 3 to discuss the forthcoming season and admitted the move had come as a shock as he had anticipated continuing his tenure as captain.”It [the meeting] was to talk about playing for Trinidad so I told them [TTCB], ‘Yes I will be available for Trinidad,’ and I said, ‘Yes, no problem, I will be at training tomorrow [November 4],’ and then they said I am no longer the captain,” he said.”So I said how could I be West Indies captain and play for T&T under somebody else. When I was captain for the four-day and the 50-over teams and Dwayne [Bravo] was captain for West Indies’ one-day squad, the guys said because he is one-day captain, it would look bad if he comes back to play for T&T under somebody else, so he captained the team for the Super50. Now it is the same situation, if I am captain for West Indies and have to come back to play under somebody else.”Ramdin alleged he was being victimised and said that he had been asked about the abandoned India tour during the meeting with the TTCB. Ramdin believed the team was moving in a different direction, but said that his removal served as a motivating factor.”In moving forward they are trying to go in a different direction,” he said. “I am axed as captain and they announced Rayad Emrit will be captain going forward for Trinidad & Tobago. I think it is more victimisation because they were asking me questions about India and my lawyer said not to talk about it so I think they were trying to get more information on that aspect.”I think they are trying to victimise me and some of the other players, but I am not going to let it disrupt me mentally. I am just trying to get back into the right frame of mind to play and I know we [T&T] have a couple of games before going to South Africa so I will just try to get myself mentally prepared. We have a game against Barbados at the Oval so that is my main focus right now, to get out there and be playing cricket again.”Rampersad reportedly told that the executive could not have removed Ramdin as captain without a recommendation from the selectors. Alec Burns, head of the selection panel, told the paper that the panel had made recommendations but could not reveal them. He said the panel could only make recommendations and that the final decision rested with the TTCB executive. Azim Bassarath, the board president, also said that players “cannot be victimised” for abandoning the India tour.

Early mistakes can be good sign – Chappell

Greg Chappell, Australia Under-19’s team manager, said that it was good his team were making mistakes early on, as they could rectify and learn from them ahead of the World Cup

Kanishkaa Balachandran in Abu Dhabi11-Feb-2014

Greg Chappell said Australia Under-19’s biggest weakness was against spin•AFP

The last ten days, ever since they left home for Sri Lanka and then the UAE, have been difficult for the Australian Under-19 team. The three-time World Cup winners failed to win any of their four games since the start of February, losing 3-0 to Sri Lanka U-19s and conceding their opening warm-up game against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi.Despite the less than ideal build-up to the tournament, set to get underway in three days’ time, Australia’s team manager Greg Chappell said the early hiccups may not be the worst thing to happen to the team. He felt it would help identify weaknesses and hopefully correct them by the time the results matter.Australia had failed to last their full 50 overs after opting to bat, and were bundled out for 195 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium Nursery 1. Their bowlers made Zimbabwe sweat in pursuit of a modest target but ultimately lost the game by three wickets.”In Sri Lanka and in this game, we did not just quite finish things off. Something like 20 odd extras while bowling (proved costly), and we would have made probably 20 or 30 more runs while batting,” Chappell said. “But, the only way you learn is to make mistakes and hopefully get better. We have made a few mistakes. That’s a good sign and we need to learn from it.”Australia were let down by their batting in Sri Lanka, with scores of 167, 137 and 202, once again being unable to bat out the full innings in any of the matches. Their bowlers ran Sri Lanka close in the third game, but the hosts scraped home by two wickets in the final over. Chappell said the matches so far indicated that there was plenty of room for improvement in all three departments.”We learned a lot from it (the Sri Lanka series). They bowled spin pretty well in their conditions. But, again what we learned is that we have to do the basics right,” he said. “We need to build partnerships, catch everything and we need to bowl a little bit better than we have done so far. We have given too many runs, missed too many catches and that has hurt us.”Chappell said that the team’s biggest weakness was spin. Against Zimbabwe, they lost six wickets to the spinners, with the legspinner Deven Bell returning with the best figures of 3 for 38. “We have struggled a little bit with spin bowling, both batting and bowling it. It is not been our great strength, has never been and probably will never be.”But, we have got to back our strengths here and back the group as a whole. We have a pretty solid group with some good leadership and we rely on them getting through themselves from where the coaches won’t have much of a say.”Australia play their second practice game on Wednesday in Dubai against Pakistan. They are in Group B along with Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Namibia.

'Surreal when we get Tendulkar out' – Powell

With Sachin Tendulkar set to play his final Test, possibly at his home ground at Wankhede Stadium, West Indies batsmen Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards believe they will not be spared from the emotions

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2013With Sachin Tendulkar set to play his final Test next month against West Indies, possibly at his home ground at Wankhede Stadium, opposition batsmen Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards believe their side will not be spared from the emotions surrounding the series.”It will be a surreal moment when we get him out for that one last time,” Powell told the . “It’s been a lifetime of Sachin for most of us and his final dismissal will signal the beginning of a new era for our sport.”Even the 199th will be an incredible setting, and I expect the energy to be electric. But we all know that once the flight takes off from there and we head for the last Test, India will come to a standstill for the next eight days, and all you will hear about and see is one Sachin Tendulkar.”Edwards remembered the first time he was involved in a match against Tendulkar, which was also at Wankhede in 2011, when team-mate Ravi Rampaul dismissed him six runs short of his landmark 100th century. Edwards himself had scored a stroke-filled half-century, which had him singled out for special praise.”Sachin walked up to me and said that he enjoyed my innings and he liked the way I batted,” Edwards said. “It was an incredible moment and I was speechless. He was always a true inspiration for me but that day he showed me what true humility is.”Powell’s memory of that Test is also sharp: “Ravi [Rampaul] was the most hated man in India that day, especially in Mumbai. And he told us about being worried to go and field near the boundary rope to face those thousands who had come to see Tendulkar’s 100th century. The kind of noise and the roars I heard that morning will remain etched in my memory. But once he got out, I will never forget how the crowd emptied in that one instant. There were many who were screaming to let him back just for those six runs. I expect it to be crazier this time”

Panesar finds going tough

Ivo Tennant at Colchester20-Aug-2013
ScorecardMonty Panesar toiled away with little reward at the start of his loan spell at Essex•Getty ImagesNorthamptonshire’s first team players arrived in Colchester on Monday anticipating that Monty Panesar, one of their own after all, would be playing for them against Essex. At any rate, certainly not as a member of the opposition.Upon arrival in the old garrison town, a shock awaited them. For there he was, down on the team sheet as a representative of the opposition. Inevitably this will cast some doubt on a proposed return to Northampton next year. Not that Panesar caused any particular concern for Northamptonshire’s batsmen until he took his first wicket, in his 30th over. Alex Wakely drove a full-pitched ball to short extra cover, eliciting relief more than any celebratory feeling. That was because David Sales and Stephen Peters had struck centuries on a pitch which might give Panesar some assistance later in the match – always assuming, of course that his new colleagues are not bowled out twice and beaten by an innings. It was the brainwave of Paul Grayson, the Essex coach, to sign Panesar for their remaining six first-class matches in the hope, of course, that he might spin them towards promotion. Sure enough, this iconic figure, well received by a decent crowd at Castle Park, was his customary enthusiastic self – or, more to the point, his enthusiastic self of old before his well-documented off-the-field problems and his release by Sussex. There was not one dissenting voice among the crowd. Not even when Sales lifted the left-arm spinner straight for six and when there was a dive, swallow like, over the ball in front of the sightscreen, which resulted in a soft Northants boundary. It was quite evident that here was a cricketer who was trying his utmost to succeed. When Essex prepared to take the field at the start of play, Panesar was to the fore, as if intent on running onto the pitch ahead of the umpires. He bowled his overs in several spells, never other than tidily, not necessarily inviting the batsman to drive, but always giving something to ponder, even as the runs continued to flow from both Sales and Peters, the latter who like Panesar was playing against his old county.Whether or not Monty enticed uncommitted spectators to come on account of his publicised presence was hard to gauge. Essex attract good attendances to this cherished outground, where, as David Acfield (who was present) and Ray East would emphasise season after season as they strove to become champions, the dry pitches take spin come August.Essex are having to make do without Tom Craddock for the remainder of the season, on account of personal problems, so Panesar will have plenty more bowling to do in the weeks to come before making a decision as to where his long-term future lies.As for Sales, he drove the ball sweetly in compiling 131 off 201 balls with 21 fours and that driven six off Panesar. Peters, more circumspect by comparison, reached his century off 178 balls with ten fours. The wickets that fell in the post-tea session did not disguise the fact that Northamptonshire have a pretty handy total.Afterwards, Panesar would not speak to the assembled media. To the surprise of Essex officials, he had been told by Sussex that he could not do so – even though he has been released. Given that he is on loan to Essex, there was nothing his new employers could do about that.
