Tottenham: Sky share big Spence update

Sky Sports have now shared a major transfer update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of exciting Championship starlet Djed Spence.

The Lowdown: Paratici bids made…

The 21-year-old, currently shining on loan at Nottingham Forest from parent club Middlesbrough, has been at the centre of Spurs’ interest in recent months.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Antonio Conte is reportedly keen to bring in a right-wing-back, and while Spence may well be one more for the future, the Lilywhites have been determined to land him in recent months.

Tottenham chief Fabio Paratici allegedly lodged multiple January bids in an attempt to bring Spence to the Premier League, as per ESPN, with their interest continuing long past winter.

Credible source Jack Rosser of The Evening Standard backs that the north Londoners are set to battle with rivals Arsenal over the homegrown ace’s summer signing.

The Latest: Sky share big update…

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, taking to Twitter, now claims that Spence has an ‘offer’ from Spurs – but they aren’t the only ones making approaches.

There are as many as five clubs vying for the defender, including Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, but it is believed that Spence has his eye on one move in particular.

Plettenberg explained: “Update Spence: Selling price is €12-15m! It is said that he has got 5 offers. City, Arsenal & Tottenham are among the interested clubs. Djed’s dream is to play for #MUFC one day. He is a fan! Been told there should be still a loose contact with FC Bayern.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

The exciting rising star has been a revelation in England’s second tier and could leave for just £13 million – not to mention his signing would go some way to solving Spurs’ homegrown quota crisis.

Despite his tender age, Spence has proved a ‘massive player’ for Forest over 2021/2022, as claimed by Sky Sports pundit Jobi McAnuff. His WhoScored stats certainly back just how brilliant he has been this season, ranking among Forest’s top-four performers in the Championship going by average match rating.Out of Steve Cooper’s current crop, only forward Keinan Davis has completed more successful take-ons per 90 than Spence domestically (WhoScored) – backing the top talent’s proven attacking threat as an effective RWB.His quality is evident, but given his interesting in moving to Old Trafford and all the fierce competition, it appears Paratici faces a tough task to get the deal done.In other news: Source: Tottenham edge closer to ‘top signing’, he now really wants to join Conte! Newcastle must sign Andreas Christensen

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is currently enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League that has seen his team rise above the bottom three in the division.

He was given his first chance to bring his own players in during the January window and bolstered his side with the likes of Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier with Chris Wood.

The Magpies boss spent a number of years at Bournemouth in the Premier League and picked up some gems in the transfer market, which could now look to replicate with Newcastle.

His own Ake

One player the Englishman enjoyed great success with at the Vitality Stadium was Dutch centre-back Nathan Ake, as he brought the defender in from Chelsea and worked with him for 121 matches before he was sold to Manchester City in the same summer the manager left the Cherries.

This shows that he was able to rely on Ake as a regular member of his defence and helped him progress to a point where he was able to go and sign for Pep Guardiola’s Premier League title-winners.

Howe could now repeat this trick at Newcastle by raiding Chelsea for another centre-back in the form of Andreas Christensen, someone dubbed a “really special talent” by TalkChelsea’s Simon Phillips.

FCInterNews recently reported that the Magpies have offered him a four-year deal to make the switch to St. James’ Park in the summer. He is out of contract at Stamford Bridge and has a contract on the table with Thomas Tuchel’s side, but is yet to decide whether or not he will accept it and stay or depart as a free agent.

This means that the Toon could potentially snap him up for nothing in July if he does not put pen to paper with the Blues.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas previously hailed the £80k-per-week gem as being “very underrated” whilst Thomas Tuchel lauded the Dane earlier this season, saying:

“He is very strong, very reliable & he has not reached his limits because in his age there’s still room to improve. He can be a top defender for us in the next years & hopefully he will be because he comes from the academy.”

Christensen has averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.90 in the Premier League this season, playing 14 matches in the division. He has also averaged an excellent score of 7.16 in the Champions League this term across six starts for the Blues.

Meanwhile, no Newcastle centre-back with more than five league appearances for the club has averaged a rating higher than 6.71. This suggests that he could come in and be an excellent addition to the squad, whilst he has plenty of room left to grow at the age of 25.

Therefore, the defensive tank could be Howe’s version of Ake at Bournemouth for the Magpies moving forward as he has proven himself to be a quality option in the here and now whilst having the potential to improve further in the future.

Taylor wary of dangerous India

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor has said India’s unpredictable run so far in the tri-series made them a dangerous proposition ahead of the virtual semi-final between the two sides on Wednesday

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor has said India’s unpredictable run in the tri-series made them dangerous opponents ahead of the knock-out clash between the two sides on Wednesday. India’s convincing victory against Sri Lanka came in between two heavy defeats, and Taylor was wary of their ability to bounce back from reversals.”I think it almost makes them dangerous, they didn’t play that well against us in the first game, and then they came back and played well against Sri Lanka. Obviously they didn’t play as well as they would have liked to play against Sri Lanka in the last match, that makes them dangerous,” Taylor said.India’s batsmen have had a forgettable time so far in the tournament, crumbling to scores of 88 and 103 in their defeats, but Taylor refused to write them off. “They are a good batting unit. They have played a lot of cricket. I am sure with their experience they will come firmer and we just need to put pressure on them,” he said.”I think every top order has struggled, not just India. We struggled at the top and Sri Lanka had their troubles as well. It [the ball] has done lot of things. I guess their batting is under pressure but I would say even we were under a bit of pressure.”New Zealand’s seam attack ruthlessly exposed India’s frailties outside the off stump in the opening game. Taylor said his bowlers will decide on whether to bounce India’s batsmen, or pitch it up to them, depending on the state of the wicket. “I guess we would have to wait and see how the pitch is like, and see how the bounce is. I think it is a fresh wicket. And most of the wickets that we played on turned a lot more than we expected and then bounced a lot. But since our boys are tall they get a little extra bounce than most. So if it does bounce then we will have to wait and see. If it doesn’t bounce to knee-height then we should pitch it up.”More than the lack of experience in his side, Taylor was concerned that his batsmen had not had a hit for 12 days leading into the game. Their last completed fixture was the defeat to Sri Lanka on August 13, and New Zealand did not bat in the rained-out encounter against the hosts, their only match in the interim period.”Probably when we came in, we did not have a experienced side. That was part of the deal that we wanted to give other guys experience and also to come here, win and play well. Scott [Styris] and I scored runs. But we only scored runs once,” Taylor said. “It is going to be 12 days since we have actually had a bat. There is going to be a little more anxiety probably [because of] the fact that we have not had a bat for 12 days than the actual game itself.”New Zealand have a minor fitness concern leading into the game, with Kane Williamson suffering a bicep niggle. Martin Guptill, who missed the last match, has recovered. “[Martin] Guptill is fit and raring to go. Kane Williamson has got a bit of bicep injury and he will be under observation,” Taylor said. “He did not bowl or throw yesterday. We will have to wait and see how it goes. And if he gets through that, we will just have to wait and see on selection.”

McAvennie on Everton accounts

Pundit Frank McAvennie has now unleashed on Everton after they posted their financial accounts.

The Lowdown: Accounts published

The Goodison Park faithful have now published their official accounts for the 2020/21 season on their website.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-3/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

They have recorded a total loss of £120.9m, with some of that down to the financial impact of the global pandemic.

However, the Merseyside club have remained in a secure position thanks to Farhad Moshiri, who has given them more than £600m since he first bought shares in 2016.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has unleashed at the Toffees over their financial losses, and the 62-year-old added that relegation from the Premier League is now a ‘real worry’:

“You can spend all the money in the world but it’s the decisions that are letting them down.

“Hiring Benitez was such a huge mistake, no amount of money can help when you do that.

“A lot gets made of that hire but the transfers have been pretty bad too.

“Everton need to invest in people who make football decisions, people who know what they are doing because the current guys are clueless don’t know what they are doing.

“They are such a big club and I don’t want them to get relegated.

“But you look at the club’s position and it’s a real worry.

The Verdict: Relegation catastrophic

If the Blues were to go down to the Championship, it would be nothing short of a catastrophe.

They are already recording big financial losses, and without the security of wealth that the top flight brings through the likes of TV deals and sponsorships, they could be in real trouble come this time next term.

Of course, whether the pandemic will have as much of a financial impact is another question, but relegation still seems unthinkable at this moment in time, and so Frank Lampard and his team must push all the way to make sure that they stay up.

Bowlers earn Essex big lead

Essex’s bowlers ensured they held a commanding advantage over Lancashire after two days of their County Championship Division One match at Old Trafford

Essex’s bowlers ensured they held a commanding advantage over Lancashire after two days of their County Championship Division One match at Old Trafford. The home side’s batting order has rarely looked steady this campaign and they struggled again as five of the six bowlers used by Essex captain Mark Pettini got amongst the wickets. The scorecard was at its worst when the lacklustre hosts were reduced to 101 for 7 at the end of the 37th over in reply to Essex’s first-innings total of 307. But at least a fourth County Championship half-century of the summer for Sajid Mahmood helped his side avoid the follow-on and reach 184 all out.Mahmood finished with 58, off as many balls, while Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was the pick of the visiting attack with 3 for 42 from 13.1 overs. Maurice Chambers and Ryan ten Doeschate had claimed two each of the first seven but Lancashire were hampered by a bout of sickness for regular opener Stephen Moore. The ex-Worcestershire batsman only came in at No. 6 and made just 3.Essex opener Billy Godleman was the 15th wicket to fall in the day when he was caught behind by Luke Sutton off the bowling of Kyle Hogg in the visiting side’s second innings. They reached 26 for 1 from 13 overs at close and will begin day three with a lead of 149.The day could hardly have started better for the hosts after Essex could only add another 56 to their overnight total and left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan finished with a career-best of 6 for 74 from 38.3 overs. Kerrigan took all four wickets, including three in eight balls, to ensure his side claimed a third bowling point in the nick of time.He took two wickets in the 110th over, including Kaneria bowled off the last ball of it, to reduce Essex to 299 for 9 and prevent the visitors claiming another bonus point of their own. Kerrigan then knocked over last man Maurice Chambers, caught by Mark Chilton, to leave Lancashire felling better about themselves.Chambers soon changed that as he bowled Luke Sutton and Ashwell Prince, the latter with a beauty with the first ball of the afternoon session. ten Doeschate had Paul Horton and Moore caught in the gully by Ravi Bopara and behind by James Foster respectively.Chris Wright trapped Steven Croft lbw in between before David Masters had skipper Glen Chapple caught behind and Kaneria snared Mark Chilton lbw for 49. And when Hogg was run out by Bopara in the covers two overs into the evening session Lancashire were 123 for 8 in the 44th over.Kaneria then had Kerrigan caught by a diving Bopara at mid-wicket before Mahmood skied one to Walker to complete the innings.

Romano explains failed Amrabat transfer to Spurs

Writing on social media, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has explained why Tottenham Hotspur didn’t sign Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

The Lowdown: Spurs reach ‘agreement’…

As per reports, it appeared at one stage that the Lilywhites were all but certain to sign the Morocco international.

Indeed, claims from Italy suggested that Spurs had reached an ‘agreement’ to sign Amrabat with manager Antonio Conte personally ‘waiting’ for his arrival in north London (Corriere Fiorentino via Sport Witness).

Romano also stated that the player himself was ‘waiting for Tottenham’ and ‘wanted’ to join (YouTube via The Boot Room), with the reporter now explaining why the transfer didn’t materialise.

The Latest: Romano explains ‘collapsed’ 11th hour move…

Taking to Twitter, he claimed a potential move to Spurs ‘collapsed’ in the 11th hour.

“Sofyan Amrabat will not be allowed to leave Fiorentina in the last hours of the window,” he stated on deadline day.

“Erick Pulgar leaves to join Galatasaray, done deal – so Fiorentina need Amrabat to stay.

“Tottenham potential move has collapsed.”

The Verdict: Big miss?

The 27-cap midfield dynamo, called a ‘bargain’ player by ex-Palermo sporting director Rino Foschi, won’t exactly be a big miss for Spurs despite that plaudit.

Tottenham instead landed a 2018 World Cup gem in Rodrigo Bentancur and one who can add real steal to Conte’s midfield, as evident by his impressive average of 2.8 tackles per 90 in the Champions League this season (WhoScored).

That’s the joint most of any Juve player and it’s safe to say that his signing will boost Spurs in their hunt for a top four place.

Tottenham transfer news on Veretout

Antonio Conte is reportedly now eyeing up a move to sign Jordan Veretout for Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Sound familiar?

Spurs fans may have heard of Veretout before, as he has played in the Premier League with Aston Villa, under former Lilywhites manager Tim Sherwood.

He was not exactly a hit at Villa Park, lasting just one season there, but he has come on leaps and bounds since then.

Now playing under another former THFC boss in Jose Mourinho at AS Roma, the central midfield player currently has four goals and eight assists in total so far this term, and is now catching the eye of former Serie A coach Conte.

The Latest: Conte monitoring

As per Calciomercato, Conte is now ‘monitoring’ Veretout’s situation at Roma, as there is a chance that he could be sold.

The player apparently likes Conte from what he saw during the manager’s time in Italy, and is currently valued at between €25-30m (£20.9-25.1m), but it is ‘unlikely’ that he will move this month.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Get it done

At 28 years of age, Veretout is entering his prime, and so now is the best time to go out and buy him if he is the man Conte wants.

The £91,000-per-week ace would give the North London club that extra bit of creativity needed in the middle of the park, as his 1.9 key passes per game in Serie A so far this campaign is matched only by Son Heung-Min in Conte’s squad in the Premier League, not to mention his six assists in the Italian top flight – no Tottenham player has more than three league assists.

Nonetheless, having seen him up close in Serie A, he is a player that Conte will know how to get the best out of, and a move for the France international in this window would present a shrewd bit of business.

AVFC must complete Nat Phillips transfer

Aston Villa have already made substantial efforts in strengthening their squad during the current January transfer window by adding the duo of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne to their ranks.

With two weeks left until the window closes and chief executive Christian Purslow recently claiming that there are “one or two other things” they would like to get done in terms of transfers before the end of the month, one area of their squad that the Midlands club should now be looking to add to is at centre-back.

Having seen Axel Tuanzebe leave Villa Park earlier this month, a space has now opened up in Villa’s squad for a new centre-back to come in alongside the likes of Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause.

One potential centre-back that could realistically sign a deal with Villa within the next two weeks and join Gerrard’s squad, is Liverpool’s 24-year-old defender Nat Phillips, who has been mentioned with a move away from the Merseyside club this month.

On a short-term basis, Phillips, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £19k-per-week according to Salary Sport, would be a useful asset for Villa, not only due to Tuanzebe’s absence but also because of the injury Konsa picked up in their recent 2-2 draw against Manchester United that could keep him out for a period of time.

In a long-term regard, with Phillips’ fairly young age and the fact that Hause’s contract is set to expire in the summer, signing the Liverpool man could be a good piece of business from Villa if they get him on a long contract and Gerrard manages to embed him into the team successfully, which would presumably be tempting for Phillips given his lack of game time at Anfield this season.

Having played across the Premier League and Champions League for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, who has praised the 24-year-old in the past for his “insane” performances for the Reds, Phillips could be seen as a potential upgrade on Hause despite being younger than the current Villa defender.

In the Premier League last term, the Villa target won a whopping 5.6 aerial duels per game compared to Hause’s 3.2 this term. Meanwhile, Phillips is also a more efficient tackler, prevailing in 1.3 per match in comparison to the 0.5 won by their current option at the back.

Therefore it is worth Gerrard making a call to his former club to see if they would be willing to work out a deal for the defender before the end of the month.
