Henry & Terry in line to unite to take charge of Aston Villa

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa could be set to appoint Thierry Henry and John Terry as a duo following Steve Bruce’s sacking last week, according to The Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

A slow start to the season has left Aston Villa’s promotion ambitions in danger of going up in smoke and the club made the decision last week to part ways with Steve Bruce, following a woeful sequence of results that saw them win just one of their last ten fixtures.

Villa’s poor form continued at the weekend as they lost 2-1 to Millwall and the club are now focusing on appointing a new boss during this months’ international break, having two weeks before their next clash against Swansea City.

A number of candidates are being considered but The Daily Mail states that a dynamic duo could be formed between Arsenal legend Theirry Henry and former Aston Villa defender John Terry, with the latter being an assistant to the Frenchman.

Worth a risk?

With just one win in 11 matches across all competitions and sinking to four points off the playoff spots, Aston Villa are in need of a quick revival from whoever takes charge at Villa Park but appointing Henry and Terry would be a major risk.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”304066″ player=”12034″ title=”Could Jadon Sancho Be England’s Neymar”]

Henry, currently assistant to Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, has limited experience in coaching and Terry, who only announced his retirement yesterday, also lacks the management experience that Villa will need.

While the club may be inspired by Steven Gerrard’s form with Rangers and Frank Lampard’s success with Derby County, the situations are not comparable as they had the summer to build their squad whereas Henry and Terry would be thrown straight into the deep end.

Everton must win three-way race for Bernard

Everton are one of three teams in the race to sign Brazil international Bernard, and Marco Silva could get his reign off to an excellent start by securing the pacey playmaker.

What’s the story?

According to journalist Andersinho Marques, former Shakhtar Donetsk winger Bernard will move to the Premier League this summer.

The 14-cap Brazilian, who has registered 35 assists in 157 appearances for the Ukrainian outfit as per Transfermarkt, is a free agent after opting not to renew his contract with the Ukrainian club, and will now reportedly choose between Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool.

The 25 year-old has also been heavily linked with a move to West Ham, and Hammers fans even suspected it was a done deal when the player’s agent posted an Instagram picture at the London Stadium on Friday.

However, it appears the race is now down to just three, and Liverpool’s swoop for Xherdan Shaqiri will probably rule them out. Bernard can play in a whole host of attacking positions, but spent most of last season on the left wing, where he could fix a big problem for Silva and Everton.

Everton’s own Coutinho?

The probable exit of Yannick Bolasie will leave a gaping hole on Everton’s left wing, and Ademola Lookman will not be able to fill that void by himself. Fans are desperate to see more of the young Englishman, but they simply cannot rely on an unproven raw talent to be their first choice.

Bernard would immediately compete for this spot on the wing, while also adding competition for other places and giving Silva plenty of options to rotate. The crafty little Brazilian, standing at just 5 ft 5, is valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt, so getting him on a free would be excellent business.

The 25 year-old has a similar dribbling style to Philippe Coutinho, using his low centre of gravity, fantastic close control and rapid burst of acceleration to force defenders to either foul him or let him past.

Marcel Brands has yet to make a summer signing since arriving at Goodison Park, but there is no doubt that the capture of Bernard would be a big one, and it would prove that they can match the ambitions of rivals West Ham who have already sealed big-money deals for Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko.

The Toffees have also been linked with a mega money move for Wilfried Zaha, who would no doubt be an excellent signing. However, Bernard is more versatile than the Palace winger, and wouldn’t stifle Lookman because of his ability to play in multiple positions.

So, Everton fans, would you like to sign Bernard on a free? Do you think you can beat Arsenal and Liverpool to his signature? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…

In Focus: Chelsea confident they will beat Liverpool in Aubameyang race

According to reports in The Mirror, Chelsea are confident that they will win the race to sign £65m-rated Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, despite The Sun saying Liverpool are also keen.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Blues boss Antonio Conte is desperate to bring in a new centre-forward this summer after telling Diego Costa at the end of last season that he isn’t part of his plans for next term, and he has already lost out to Manchester United in the race for Romelu Lukaku.

However, The Mirror now says that the Premier League holders are in pole position to sign Aubameyang, with Borussia Dortmund in discussions with Arsenal for Olivier Giroud.

Bringing in the Gabon international would certainly be a boost for Conte following a frustrating transfer window in which they have only signed Willy Caballero and Antonio Rudiger, although Tiemoue Bakayoko is on the verge of completing his £39.7m move from Monaco.

How did Aubameyang do last season?

He enjoyed the best season of his career to date.

The 28-year-old scored 40 goals in 46 appearances for Dortmund as they won the German Cup, and the prolific campaign continued his fine record for the Bundesliga outfit since he made the move from Saint-Etienne in 2013 – the striker has netted 120 in 189 outings in total.

Would he be a good signing for Chelsea?

He certainly would be, even if he is perhaps older than Lukaku.

The 28-year-old has an abundance of pace and has shown what a prolific finisher he can be both in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League, and he is almost guaranteed to get goals for the Blues if he completes a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Will Liverpool up the ante now?

It’s difficult to say.

The Reds have already been linked with big-money moves for Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita and if they are going to continue concentrating on those deals, they may not have the cash to get Aubameyang too.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, there is no doubt that Chelsea are in desperate need of a new centre-forward and there are few better options on the current market than Aubameyang, and the Blues must get the deal over the line.

Stats show just how much West Ham will miss Payet

As we’re sure you’re all well aware, Dimitri Payet’s West Ham career appears to be dead in the water.

Slaven Bilic revealed earlier this week that the Frenchman wants to leave the club, and has given some further context in his column for London Evening Standard.

“This situation with Dimitri has been developing for a little while now. Two days ago, he and I had a meeting. I won’t disclose what was said, but I was left in no doubt as to his intentions.

“Yesterday, just before the normal pre-match press conference, I asked Dimitri one more time: ‘Are you standing by what you said a couple of days ago or have you thought more about it?’ He replied that he was standing by his decision, so that was that.”

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

It’s a grim situation for West Ham supporters, who have fallen in love with the attacking midfielder since his somewhat modest move from Marseille to east London at the start of 2015/16 – a campaign which saw him earn a nomination for the PFA Player of the Year award before continuing to excel for France at EURO 2016.

“There is no point in saying we won’t miss Dimitri Payet because the fans know — we know — that he is a great player.”

Bilic certainly has a fair point – there’s no doubt Payet is West Ham’s talismanic entity and he is head and shoulders above the rest of the squad in terms of natural talent. To say he’s integral to the team would be an understatement, but the statistics show just how important he is for the Hammers – and just how much they could struggle without him.

[ffc_insert title=”Payet Replacements” name=”Four who could fill the void…” image_ link=”https://www.footballfancast.com/premier-league/west-ham/four-premier-league-replace” link_text=”Click to read more” ]

As you can see from our infographic, Payet has been responsible for more than 35% of West Ham’s chances created in the Premier League this season, whilst providing almost half of their 13 assists. He’s also their most active crosser – something that could have real significance in the coming weeks with Andy Carroll returning from injury – and has completed almost a fifth of all their successful dribbles this term.

Also weighing in with a significant chunk of shots, Payet’s absence will not only remove creativity but also goal threat from West Ham’s starting XI. Bilic, however, believes the show must go on…

“Many times over the years, clubs have lost quality players but gained a team. When a team has a player sent off, somehow that often gives the rest of the players more energy, they dig deeper.ÂI am not so much hoping as expecting this reaction from my team against Crystal Palace tomorrow.”

Can West Ham find a star-studded replacement before the end of the transfer window? Here’s Football FanCast’s four suggestions.

[ad_pod id=’playwire’ align=’center’]

This is not a burden for Man United, it’s an opportunity

It’s safe to say that the last few weeks have been fairly miserable ones for all involved with Manchester United; their players, their supporters, and especially their under-fire manager.

Louis Van Gaal has been batting away criticism from all sides recently for both his team’s style of play and (more recently), their poor results. Their 2-1 loss at Bournemouth on Saturday means they now lie fourth in the league, trailing the leaders Leicester City by six points, and with only three wins in 12 in all competitions. During that period they have also crashed out of both the League Cup and the Champions League, both in fairly shambolic and disastrous manner. So it would possibly be fair to say that there aren’t many positives on the horizon for the Old Trafford side, or their beleaguered manager, right?. However, I would suggest that it’s possible for United to turn the fact that they now have to compete in the Europa League into a positive, and to use the experience to their advantage.

For one thing, it may well represent United’s best chance of winning silverware this season. It’s hard to imagine them on this sort of domestic form putting a concerted title bid together, and of course having been knocked out of the League Cup already that only gives them the FA Cup for a chance of domestic glory. With the Old Trafford faithful constantly restless for silverware after gorging themselves on success under Sir Alex Ferguson, this may well represent a chance for Van Gaal to win back some credit with the supporters after taking a pounding on social media (and in the mainstream media) over the last few weeks.

What’s more, United are easily be one of the favourites for the competition. Them and Borussia Dortmund would appear to be the straightfoward frontrunners, with Liverpool, Valencia and Porto as other possible winners. However, when judged against the quality of the sides left in the Champions League there is comparison. United now have a much easier chance of winning a European trophy this season in this competition.

For much of this young and relatively inexperienced side this would be their first taste of winning trophies at a famous club, and would no doubt stand them in good stead for a renewed and better-prepared assault on the Premier League next season. Players like Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera and others have only played under Van Gaal and never experienced the trophy-glut of the last few seasons under Sir Alex. They would surely be markedly better players with the confidence of a major honour.

This then is a winnable trophy for United, who have a big enough squad to either play a different side in the Premier League and the Europa League or simply rotate their key players between competitions depending on which they take more seriously. Their new players would benefit hugely from the experience of winning silverware, and their fans would feel a whole lot better about the Van Gaal era if a couple of trophies were in the bag at the end of the season. With a squad big enough to cope with the rigours of two competitions and playing on Sundays, what are the down sides?

Liverpool beat Chelsea in Carabao Cup finalJoe Gomez lauds support at WembleySays Liverpool fans were "superior"Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?

Jurgen Klopp secured his first silveware in his final season with Liverpool as the Merseyside club beat the Blues in the latter stages of extra time with a winner by captain Virgil van Dijk that sent the fans at Wembley into a frenzy. Gomez has now come out to hail the support from the club's fans that helped his team over the line.

AdvertisementWHAT GOMEZ SAID

On the supporters’ influence on the day, Gomez revealed: “Honestly, I'm not one for cliches but I generally think we have the best in the world. When you have a comparison like that, it's a 50-50 stadium and you can see how evident it is how superior our fans are in comparison it's credit to them. I hope they realise that and how much it means to us. You see the opposite side (Chelsea) and they need that boost and we just get that and it helps us so much. That is one thing we are all grateful for."

In scenes reminiscent of when Barcelona were defeated 4-0 at Anfield in a Champions League semi-final almost five years ago, Klopp and his players lined up to celebrate in front of their 40,000 supporters after hoisting the trophy at Wembley on Sunday night. The players and the fans then broke out their famous 'You'll Never Walk Alone' anthem as Klopp celebrated his first trophy of his last season at the helm of the club.

Reinaldo, do São Paulo, faz pedido: 'Não estoque alimentos e remédios'

CENAS LAMENTÁVEIS NO FIM
