Would welcome Hussey back, if he returned – Arthur

Australia coach Mickey Arthur has said the selectors would welcome Michael Hussey back if he decided to make a return for this year’s Ashes series, given the lack of experience in Australia’s Test squad

Brydon Coverdale in Delhi19-Mar-2013Australia coach Mickey Arthur has said the selectors would welcome Michael Hussey back if he decided to make a return for this year’s Ashes series, given the lack of experience in Australia’s Test squad. However, Arthur said he was confident that in time the younger members of Australia’s team would be capable of filling the vacuum left by the retirements of Hussey and Ricky Ponting, although their absence had contributed to the slipping team culture over the past few months.Arthur also conceded he had put his job on the line with the uncompromising decision to leave four players out of the Mohali Test due to their failure to complete a task in which they were asked for ideas on how they and the team could improve. But he said such a move was necessary to bring the culture of the team back to where it needed to be following the departures of Ponting and Hussey, whose intense work ethic served as examples to their younger colleagues.A Hussey comeback appears unlikely given his decision to retire was made largely due to his desire to spend more time at home with his young family, and the Ashes tour would require him to be away for two and a half months. But the Australians have missed Hussey badly during the ongoing Indian tour and given that he has remained a solid run-scorer in the Sheffield Shield, Arthur said the door would be open if he wanted to return.”We’d certainly listen to Mike Hussey if Mike Hussey came knocking at our door,” Arthur said. “But that’s a hypothetical at the moment. He’s retired. We’ve moved on now, you know. Yeah we miss him. We miss the aura of Ricky Ponting. But I’m hoping that these younger players will take over that mantle in time to come. They’re nowhere near ready yet.”But in time to come they’ve got to step up and take on those mantles because they’re going to be the role models for the next generation of cricketers. I’m confident we’ve got the best players here. These guys just need to be given that confidence and just need to stand up. I’m pretty sure they will.”However, the young squad did need a rev up from Arthur, captain Michael Clarke and team manager Gavin Dovey last week when those four players were left out of the team. The bold decision was described by Arthur as a line in the sand after standards had slipped among the wider playing group during the Indian tour, from players being late to meetings to wearing the wrong uniforms, to giving back-chat.The decision has split opinion in the cricket world and although Cricket Australia’s board backed the team management in their move, Arthur is well aware that it could be a make-or-break moment in his coaching career. Arthur took the reins of the Australia team in late 2011 but it is 2013 that will define the Arthur-Clarke leadership team, with two Ashes series coming up. Things have not started well in India.”I would say I’ve put my neck on the line,” Arthur said. “But I’ve put my neck on the line because I’m really passionate about Australian cricket and I’m very passionate about this team. I want this team to achieve ultimate success and that’s to get to number one in the world. It was needed. It had to happen and the responses have been fantastic. I’m comfortable. It was a week of massive pain. It really was. But I’m comfortable.”I sit here now knowing that this team is going in the right direction. People will say why did it take so long. It took so long because the team was running itself, because we had some senior players around it; we don’t have those senior players around this team any more. This team needed to be shown direction and it got a pretty clear message of that before this Test match.””We’ve got to understand where we’re at at the moment with a very young group of players that needs to be shown the right way to go. If you’ve got older, senior players the team governs itself and then it’s easy just to run and coach. If you’ve got a young team you need to grab the team and really make the players understand what their responsibilities and ownerships are of the side.”Although Arthur is happy with the response from within the squad after the tumultuous past week, his hardline stance has brought him plenty of criticism from former players, fans and the media. In fact, the online abuse became so bad that Arthur decided on Tuesday to delete his Twitter account.”I think if you’re on it you just open yourself up to that [abuse],” he said. “There has been some very positive stuff as well, but it’s not worth it. I’ve got bigger things to worry about than Twitter to be honest.”

Cook in Strauss mould – Finn

Steven Finn was confident of a smooth transition between the England captaincy regimes of Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook

If there were any doubts about the smooth transition between the captaincy regimes of Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook, they should have been largely dispelled by the comments of Steven Finn ahead of the third ODI of the series between England and South Africa at the Oval.Finn, in many ways, represents the new England. Aged just 23, he has the talent to represent the international team in all formats for much of the next decade. While still perceived as a relatively junior member of the attack, he is quickly emerging as the most dangerous bowler and, having come through the England system from Under-16 level, he is well-placed to speak about life as part of the England development programme.Finn’s experience as an England player also reflects that of many of the next generation. Like Jonny Bairstow and James Taylor, Finn has played under the captaincy of Strauss and Cook and understands that, while the personality of the captain may have changed, the policies and principles that have governed this side for some time have not.Finn actually made his Test debut under Cook, called into the England squad for the tour of Bangladesh in early 2010. But, as a county colleague of Strauss at Middlesex, he has known him for even longer.”The first time I met him was when I was 14,” Finn said. “I was bowling in the indoor nets just before he was going off to the West Indies for a one-day tour, I think.”I jagged one down to him, he ducked under it and fell over. I remember the coach shouting from the back of the net, ‘You just got put on your arse by a 14-year-old!’ That was the first time I ever met him. It was quite a surreal scenario: a 14-year-old bowling to an England player and eventually being in the same team as him.”But Cook was the one who told me I was making my Test debut, so that always holds a great place in my heart. He made it very easy for a young player to come into an England team and just settle in, go about my business. That was the first experience I had of being in an England dressing-room and Alastair was excellent at welcoming me in and making me feel like one of the boys.”I think the transition between the two will be smooth. Alastair has been used to working with Andy Flower as one-day captain. Alastair may have his own plans to introduce to the Test team but I would imagine the fundamentals will be very similar. We won’t see a drastic change and I think that’s good for us as a team.”Finn, like most of the England players, was only informed of Strauss’ decision to retire after the ODI on Tuesday night. He was also among those to be given a letter from Strauss.”It was a surprise,” Finn said. “There were some shocked faces in the dressing room when we were told. Obviously it’s a disappointing time when somebody who has been so great and inspirational for us as a team and a sport steps down from their position. Yes, there were some sad and disappointed people.'”He’s been a massive part of my career. It’s been great to have him there at first slip when he’s come back to Middlesex and to have him there to bounce ideas off and talk about different scenarios has been fantastic.”He didn’t want to be influenced by other people. That’s part of the reason he didn’t talk to the players before his decision. The letter just said he’d had a great time leading us and has been very proud leading us. We’ve been very proud to have him as our captain.”But Cooky is a similar sort of leader to Straussy. He leads from the front as an opening batsman. He goes out and sets the tone, which is very good for a captain. He’s grown into his role as a one-day captain and we’ve played quite aggressive cricket, especially with the way we’ve attacked people with ball and bat. I have a slip quite a lot when I’m bowling, which you don’t always see in ODI cricket. That can only bode well for the future.”While the end result of Tuesday’s ODI was a thumping win for South Africa, Finn made the perfectly reasonable point that the margins between the sides were perhaps not quite as big as might be presumed from the scorecard. England’s opening bowlers, Finn and James Anderson, beat the bat frequently in the early overs and might, with a little bit of luck, have claimed several early wickets.”Amla had a couple of lives,” Finn said. “We could have had either him or Graeme Smith quite early. I thought we bowled well up front and we could have taken a couple of wickets, but it wasn’t to be. Amla is obviously in very good form at the moment and people are allowed to play well against us and we have to find a way to counteract that.”As an opening bowler who has played a fair amount of county cricket in recent times, Finn might be expected to have well-informed views about the potential top-order replacement for Strauss in the Test team. While he was reluctant to be drawn on the issue, it was interesting to note the two names he mentioned: Nick Compton, who is enjoying a prolific season for Somerset, and Michael Carberry, who enjoyed a brief taste of Test cricket alongside Finn in 2010.”There are some excellent guys out there,” Finn said. “Nick Compton has had an excellent season, Michael Carberry has played international cricket as an opening batsman in Bangladesh. We made our debut together. So there are definitely guys out there are more than capable of coming in and playing Test cricket.”

England rest Broad, Bresnan and Swann

England have taken the oppportunity to rest Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann from the final match at Headingley on Friday

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jun-2012Having wrapped up the one-day series against West Indies with victory at The Oval, England have taken the opportunity to rest Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann from the final match at Headingley on Friday.Stuart Meaker, the Surrey fast bowler, Warwickshire allrounder Chris Woakes and Kent offspinner James Tredwell have been added into the squad. Woakes had already been drafted in as cover after Jade Dernbach was given compassionate leave following the death of Tom Maynard on Monday but Dernbach remains in the squad for the final ODI.Broad, who is the Twenty20 captain, was also rested for the final Test against West Indies at Edgbaston but for Bresnan and Swann, both part of the Twenty20 squad, it is the first England match of the season they will miss. Since the retirement from one-day cricket of Kevin Pietersen this trio are the only first-choice selections in all three formats. The players called into the squad all have previous ODI experience with Meaker making his debut against India last October and playing two matches in the series. Woakes, who was originally on that tour before pulling out injured, has played four matches which include taking 6 for 45 against Australia at Brisbane, the second-best figures for England in ODIs.Tredwell, meanwhile, was the reserve spinner in the Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year and last appeared in a one-day international in the World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka in Colombo. In the game before that, against West Indies, he took a match-winning 4 for 48 to keep England alive in the tournament.Geoff Miller, the national selector, said: “The fact that we have already won the NatWest series means we are able to take the opportunity to rest three players ahead of next week’s series against Australia and take a closer look at players who are likely to feature in our limited overs planning going forward.”England played the same side in both the first two matches, winning by 114 runs at West End and eight wickets at The Oval, meaning Dernbach, Samit Patel and Jonny Bairstow from the original squad have yet to feature.Revised squad Alastair Cook (capt), Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Ravi Bopara, Eoin Morgan, Craig Kieswetter, Jonny Bairstow, Samit Patel, Chris Woakes, James Tredwell, James Anderson, Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach, Stuart Meaker

Dhoni suspended for one ODI due to slow over-rate

MS Dhoni has been suspended for one ODI and India fined for the team’s second over-rate breach in ODIs in less than a year

MS Dhoni has been suspended for one ODI and India fined for the team’s second over-rate breach in ODIs in less than a year. India were found to be two overs short during their 110-run defeat against Australia in Brisbane, after time allowances were taken into consideration. Match referee Andy Pycroft also fined Dhoni 40% of his match fee and the team’s other players were fined 20% each. This was India’s second over-rate breach this tour. Dhoni was suspended from the Adelaide Test earlier this year for a slow over-rate in the previous game in Perth, where India had gone in with four fast bowlers. Today, at the Gabba, the visitors played four seamers again. Ravindra Jadeja’s left-arm spin was not employed in the game, prompted, as Dhoni said, by the presence of several left-handers in the Australian side, though it could have improved the over-rate if used. The latest suspension is a consequence of two “minor” over-rate offences in ODIs within a year- the first one being during the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai. The grounds for the decision to take such an action against any guilty captain were laid at the ICC’s annual conference in Hong Kong last year where harsher penalties were called for against teams failing to meet their over-rate targets.”At its meeting in June 2011 in Hong Kong, the ICC Executive Board had discussed the issue of slow over-rates and accepted the recommendation of the ICC Cricket Committee that a captain of an international side should be suspended for one match if his side is guilty of two minor over-rate offences in the same format over a 12-month period,” the ICC said.A ‘Minor Over-Rate Offence’ is when a side is found to be upto two overs short in an ODI or a T20I and upto five overs short in a Test. The on-field umpires Steve Davies and Billy Bowden, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth umpire Paul Reiffel laid the charge, to which Dhoni plead guilty and accepted the suspension. “Dhoni also acknowledged that he had been kept informed of the position regarding over-rates on a regular basis throughout the match and therefore accepted the decision,” the ICC release stated.Dhoni was suspended for slow over-rates more than years ago as well. He had to sit out of two ODIs during a home series against Sri Lanka, as a result of which Virender Sehwag had to take over. India will now take on Sri Lanka on February 21 without Dhoni, their most consistent batsman this series with scores of 44*, 58* and 56 in his last three appearances.

Graham Ford appointed Sri Lanka coach

Graham Ford has been appointed Sri Lanka coach, replacing Geoff Marsh, it was announced today

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Jan-2012Graham Ford has been appointed Sri Lanka coach, replacing Geoff Marsh, it was announced today. Ford, the former South Africa coach, will begin his assignment with the triangular ODI series in Australia next month. His appointment is the latest decision by Sri Lanka Cricket to revamp the setup around the national team – the captaincy was changed on Monday and, last week, the selection panel was replaced before its term expired – following a string of disappointing results.A statement by the board thanked Marsh for his services; it also thanked Anura Tennekoon, who has been replaced as team manager by Charuth Senanayaka.Sri Lanka’s performances have come in for much criticism since reaching the World Cup final – they have lost every Test and ODI series they have played since then and a new board that came to power in the elections earlier this month have rung in the changes.Ford last week resigned as head coach of the Dolphins, the Durban-based franchise, saying he wanted to “follow my dreams of involvement at an international level”.He will be the third coach appointed by Sri Lanka since Trevor Bayliss stepped down after leading them to the 2011 World Cup final. Marsh was appointed for two years in September 2011 and was in charge for the tours against Pakistan and South Africa. His appointment appeared to end a period of upheaval following Bayliss’ exit. Stuart Law, who was Bayliss’ assistant, took over for the England tour before quitting to coach Bangladesh. Rumesh Ratnayake then took over for the home series against Australia, before Marsh’s appointment.Ford took over as coach of South Africa from Bob Woolmer in 1999 and held the position till 2001. He moved to Kent as director of cricket in 2004, and in 2006 he returned home to take charge of the Dolphins. In June 2007, he was offered the challenge of coaching India but declined. In 2009, he withdrew his name from the shortlist of candidates for the England coaching job.

Paine's loss is Wade's gain

Matthew Wade is looking forward to making the most of his big break, he just wishes it hadn’t arrived because of the wrong kind of break for his good mate Tim Paine. When Paine was ruled out of Australia’s upcoming Twenty20s in South Africa due to a fractured finger, Wade, 23, was the logical choice to take the gloves. As Victoria’s wicketkeeper over the past four seasons, Wade has made impressive progress in both his glovework and his batting, and was second on the Ryobi Cup run tally last summer. He had moved to Melbourne from Hobart when he realised that sneaking past Paine into the Tasmania side would be a very difficult task.Wade knew from personal experience just how good Paine was. The pair had known each other from their childhood days, when they competed in games of backyard cricket that became so serious that the loser had to go and buy fish and chips for everyone.”Tim and I grew up together, so I’m disappointed for him to have to go and get another operation on his finger,” Wade told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s devastating for him. But I’m really happy to take the opportunity. I know that he’s happy for me – I got a text from him and I know that he’s happy I got the opportunity.”By winning an international call-up, Wade has already beaten the odds. It has been notoriously difficult for glovemen to force their way into Australia’s team over the past couple of decades, with Ian Healy, Adam Gilchrist and Brad Haddin each monopolising the position during their respective eras.In the past 20 years, only nine specialist wicketkeepers have taken the gloves for Australia in any format, plus a few non-specialists like David Boon, Justin Langer and Jimmy Maher. During the same period, more than 50 fast bowlers, 40 batsmen and 20 spinners have played for Australia.”I’m really happy to get the chance to play for Australia,” Wade said. “It’s everyone’s dream. A lot of hard work goes into getting there. I’m just stoked that I’ve got my opportunity. Hopefully I can take it and things can go further from here.”A muscular left-hand batsman and a good keeper whose glovework has improved dramatically over the past four years, Wade is likely to slot in down the order for Australia. However, the highest score in his 27-match Twenty20 career – which included some IPL games for Delhi Daredevils this year – was 80 opening for Australia A.”I haven’t played a lot of Twenty20, it’s the least amount of games I’ve played out of the three forms,” Wade said. “But I feel like I’m getting better. I know my game very well now. I’m happy to get an opportunity in whatever form it is, and T20 I feel comfortable playing it and hopefully I can do the job.”There will be plenty of familiar Victorian faces in the Twenty20 side with Wade, including the captain – and selector – Cameron White, the batsmen Aaron Finch and David Hussey, and the fast bowler James Pattinson. The two Twenty20s in Cape Town and Johannesburg on October 13 and 16 will be followed by three ODIs and two Tests.

Dunn stars on Championship debut

Matthew Dunn wrote his name into Surrey history when he set up a seven-wicket victory over Derbyshire in the County Championship match at Derby

01-Jun-2011
ScorecardMatthew Dunn wrote his name into Surrey history when he set up a seven-wicket victory over Derbyshire in the County Championship match at Derby. The 19-year-old became the first Surrey bowler for 56 years to take five wickets in an innings on his Championship debut to send Derbyshire crashing to 99 all out.Dunn took 5 for 56 and demolished the home side in tandem with Tim Linley, who claimed 4 for 26 to finish with match figures of 10 for 107. Surrey were left chasing 142 and after skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown and Jason Roy smashed 62 from six overs, they cruised home shortly before 3pm with more than 48 overs left in the day.The game had been in the balance at the start of day four with Derbyshire 77 runs ahead with six wickets intact but Dunn and Linley settled the contest in the first hour. Dunn, who only came into the game on the third day when Jade Dernbach was called up by England, bowled with hostility to end Derbyshire’s hopes of setting a challenging target. He had Wes Durston snared at short leg for 17 and Greg Smith top edged a hook at the teenager three balls after he had been dropped at first slip. The home side’s hopes now rested with skipper Luke Sutton and Dan Redfern but they lasted only three overs before Linley had Redfern taken low at second slip as he prodded forward. When Dunn had Jon Clare caught behind for a duck groping forward, he became the first bowler to bag five wickets on championship debut for Surrey since Harry Kelleher took 5 for 23 against Worcestershire at the Oval in 1955. Dunn took his sweater but there was no respite for Derbyshire as Chris Jordan had Sutton caught behind driving for 12.When Steffan Jones gave Steve Davies another catch three balls into the 31st over, Linley had become the first Surrey bowler to take 10 wickets in a match since James Ormond against Warwickshire at the Oval in 2002. Derbyshire had lost their last six wickets for 59 and any chance they had of defending a small total disappeared in a flurry of boundaries.Hamilton-Brown and Roy got in some practice ahead of this week’s Friends Life t20 by rattling along at 10 an over before Smith removed them both in quick succession before lunch. But at the interval, Surrey needed only 67 more runs and after Zander de Bruyn fell to Chesney Hughes’s left-arm spin, Tom Maynard completed victory in style by launching Wes Durston over long on for six.The nature of Surrey’s win, which earned them a 23-point haul, was made all the more impressive by the fact play on Bank Holiday Monday was lost to rain but Derbyshire played some poor cricket after a strong opening day.

West Ham eye Osayi-Samuel transfer

West Ham are plotting a move to sign Fenerbahce right back Bright Osayi-Samuel ahead of next season as David Moyes looks to boost his defensive options.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Football Insider, who states that West Ham, Southampton, and Brentford are in the running for the player ahead of the summer transfer window.

The player could be reportedly available for €3m (£2.5m) and this would represent a fantastic deal for whoever goes on to sign Osayi-Samuel.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

Forget Coufal

It’s no secret that Moyes wants to enhance his West Ham squad as they aim to repeat their European heroics from this season in next year’s campaign.

More goals from the defence would be more than welcomed and Moyes could land a big Coufal upgrade with the younger, more attacking Osayi-Samuel.

Coufal hasn’t scored any goals this season, although he has registered four assists, whereas the young Englishman has netted once, as well as providing three assists during the campaign.

The Fenerbahce right-back has more than double the number of shots than Coufal (24 to 11) and lands a greater percentage on target (45.8% to 36.4%).

Osayi-Samuel’s ability to operate in various positions would also give him an advantage over Coufal and this is something Moyes should be seriously considering.

The aforementioned fee for the 24-year-old is a bargain, especially in today’s world of sheer greed and overinflated transfer fees.

Not only that, but he could make the club millions in profit if he is successful over the next few seasons. The Premier League is one of the finest in the world and his value could skyrocket following excellent performances.

Former manager Mark Warburton stated in the past that he is a “real handful” and has the pace that can “terrify defenders” and if this isn’t a glowing recommendation of his skill set, then I don’t know what is.
