Ireland batsman Paul Stirling led Middlesex to only their second win in nine Friends Life t20 matches this season as they beat southern section rivals Kent by 28 runs on a cold, wet night in Uxbridge. The umpires finally called it a day after playing on in pouring rain for the last 10 overs of the Kent innings and the first eight overs of the Middlesex reply, by which time the hosts had reached 79 for 1 which was good enough for victory under the Duckworth/Lewis method.Kent had made 149 for 3 with Joe Denly hitting an unbeaten 84 and sharing an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 96 with Martin van Jaarsveld but it was all to no avail once Stirling launched his ferocious assault. The 20-year-old hit 51 off 23 balls, including four sixes and five fours.Middlesex had put Kent into bat and bowled well to restrict them to 53 for 3 in the first 10 overs. Anthony Ireland had Rob Key caught at mid-on in his second over and Tom Smith, the left-arm spinner, took two wickets in successive overs.Smith had the dangerous Azhar Mahmood, who hit a century off 54 balls against Gloucestershire last week, stumped off his second ball and then circled to his right to hold a fine, tumbling catch when Darren Stevens got a steepling top edge.Middlesex did not take another wicket, however, as Denly and Van Jaarsveld took control. Denly made his 84 off 64 balls with two sixes and eight fours while Van Jaarsveld hit five fours in his 43 off 32 balls. It was obvious by then that the match would not go the distance and, though Middlesex got off to a poor start when Adam Rossington, an 18-year-old batsman making his Twenty20 debut, was lbw first ball to Mahmood, Stirling soon had them ahead of the required scoring rate. The Kent bowlers were clearly handicapped by the wet ball but it was still an exhilarating exhibition of clean hitting from Stirling.

ICC wants review system used at World Cup

The ICC has retained its current policy of allowing the host country to decide, upon consultation with the touring side, on whether or not to use the UDRS in a Test series

Cricinfo staff01-Jul-2010The prospect of using the UDRS at next year’s World Cup came a step closer after the ICC approved the implementation of the controversial system subject to agreements over costs and equipment between the broadcaster partner, ESPN STAR Sports, and the host nations. However, the use of UDRS in all Tests still seems a distant possibility after it was agreed to retain the current arrangement whereby the host country and visiting team decides. The implementation of the UDRS worldwide has been inconsistent, and the ICC Cricket Committee, in its meeting at Lord’s earlier this year, had recommended the system be introduced “as soon as possible in all Tests.””The detailed work of the ICC Cricket Committee gave both the CEC and the ICC Board excellent direction and there was full agreement that technology would be used whenever possible,” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive said.”We have all seen the benefits of using DRS to assist umpires in Test cricket and we are now keen to use DRS in the ICC Cricket World Cup. We also acknowledge and we are grateful for the support provided by broadcasters and technology suppliers around the world during the development phase of DRS.”The ICC and the ECB have also exonerated umpire Daryl Harper of any blame during the Johannesburg Test earlier this year. Harper landed in controversy after he turned down a caught-behind appeal against Graeme Smith which had been referred to him.Harper upheld the on-field umpire Tony Hill’s decision because he could not hear a sound on the replay and it was suggested that he had not increased the volume setting on his monitor which would have made the edge evident. However, the ICC has said a “technical failure” was the cause of the lapse.”Following the issues raised with the DRS in the Wanderers Test match between South Africa and England in January 2010, the preliminary findings of Advocate Brent Lockie and ICC Cricket Committee chairman Clive Lloyd acknowledges that the technology failure at the time adversely impacted on the information received by the third umpire Daryl Harper while making his decision,” the ICC said. “The ICC and the England and Wales Cricket Board agreed that the third umpire in the match, Daryl Harper, was entirely blameless due to this technical failure.”Andy Flower, the England coach, was unhappy with officials at the time and suggested the outcome of the investigation wasn’t quite what transpired. “I know what happened that day, because they told me,” he said. However, he remains a supporter of the system and has no issues with it being extended into the World Cup. “I think the DRS, in whatever format it is used, is quite useful – because we get more good decisions,” he said. “I don’t see why, if we give the same level of importance to all three formats, it is only Test cricket that should have DRS available.”In a bid to eliminate any inconsistency the ICC, in May, had decided it had to meet with all broadcasting companies in a bid to standardise the use of technology, and hosted a workshop earlier in the year.

The wind, ash clouds, broken fax machines – football's 14 worst ever excuses

Jurgen Klopp pointed to atmospheric conditions after drawing with Everton – but he is far from the only person to make outlandish excuses in the sport

Getty Images1Just the fax

Rumours linking David de Gea to a Real Madrid move have been almost constant since he hit the big time at Man United. But the Reds have been equally insistent in fending off Real's interest, even when a transfer looked inevitable.

The closest De Gea came to moving was in 2015, when only a reported malfunctioning fax machine stopped the clubs from completing the paperwork on time on transfer deadline day.

Both sides blamed each other for what was reported officially as a "technical glitch", and more than three years down the line De Gea remains safely at Old Trafford.

AdvertisementGetty2Too many injuries?

Managers blaming their team's failings on a spate of unfortunate injuries is nothing new. But perhaps only Klopp has dared to use the opponent's physical issues to explain away a poor result.

Manchester United held Liverpool to a draw in February despite being forced into three first-half substitutions, something the German paradoxically believes played into their hands.

"Everyone saw at United we were confident and we were much better when all of United’s players were on the pitch but the game changed completely," he claimed after the match.

"The open game and we were better. It changed and we were still in charge and gave nothing away. That is important."

Getty Images3Hopping mad

Spain began the 2006 World Cup in style, destroying Ukraine 4-0 in their first match. But that heavy defeat was naturally no fault of the beaten team, who decided to blame a host of tiny amphibians who had croaked through the night outside their Potsdam hotel.

"Because of the frogs' croaking we hardly got a wink of sleep," defender Vladislav Vashchuk explained after the game. "We all agreed that we would take some sticks and go and hunt them."

Perhaps Vashchuk had a point, though. Once away from the noisy intruders results picked up immediately, as Ukraine battled through to the quarter-finals before eventually going out to winners Italy.

Getty4Where have all the ball-boys gone?

When it comes to ball-boys, too few can be just as damaging to a team's chances as one who is a bad-luck omen. That is, according to Jose Mourinho.

"What I'm about to say is not a criticism, I'm just stating a fact: There were no ballboys in the second half," Mourinho griped in 2011 after his Real Madrid side fell victim to Barcelona in the Supercopa.

"This is something typical of small teams when experiencing difficulties."

Rattled Bangladesh run into resurgent India

Having put up a clinical display against Pakistan, India will be keen to press forward towards a semi-final spot when they face a rattled Bangladesh side on Wednesday

Manjrekar: Expect Rohit, Dhawan and Raina to fire

Big PictureAfter a thumping loss to New Zealand in their opening game, India found their footing with a Virat Kohli masterclass against Pakistan, and are now eyeing the semi-finals. They will face a Bangladesh side, reeling from two defeats, to add to the absence of Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny.Bangladesh, however, pushed Australia on Monday right till the finish. The returning Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh’s defence with five wickets between them. Bangladesh, though, will miss Taskin’s fire and pace, upfront as well as at the death, against India.India are now in a position to take advantage of Bangladesh who need to win their remaining matches and rely on other results going their way. Kohli has been the key to India’s batting, but they would like to see consistency from Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina. Rohit Sharma, too, needs to step up, having made only 25 in his last three innings, including 10 against South Africa in a warm-up match. India, however, will be buoyed by Yuvraj’s resurgence in the middle order. The bowling, led by R Ashwin, looks in good shape, with Ashish Nehra, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja giving support. Nehra has been effective in the Powerplays, while Bumrah has hit the blockhole regularly in the slog overs in addition to bowling well with the new ball.Bangladesh’s batting woes will be compounded if Tamim Iqbal isn’t fit to play. Soumya Sarkar has promised much, but seems to be bogged down by a mental block. This means that there will be more responsibility on Sabbir Rahman, Mahmudullah, and Shakib Al Hasan.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)India: WLWWWBangladesh: LLWWLIn the spotlightSuresh Raina is a senior figure in the team and has contributed with the ball and on the field, but his batting form has been poor. He hasn’t made a 50-plus score in T20 internationals since June 2010.Shuvagata Hom was rushed to Bangalore as a replacement player, and his performance against Australia reflected the fatigue, which could have been handled better by the team management. He will have to lift his game against India and shoulder the responsibility of giving his side a good finish, and sharpness in the field.Team newsIndia are unlikely to make any changes. They generally don’t change their combination unless there is a pressing need, and MS Dhoni after the Pakistan match, stressed on the need to back players like Raina and Dhawan.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Ashish NehraShuvagata Hom being picked ahead of Nasir Hossain against Australia was surprising, given that the latter has been with the side since the start of the World T20. Tamim Iqbal, who missed the Australia match with food poisoning, is not a certain starter.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal/Mohammad Mithun, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Sabbir Rahman, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Nasir Hossain/Shuvagata Hom, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Al-Amin Hossain, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Saqlain SajibPitch and conditionsBangalore has experienced sweltering heat recently, with temperatures rising to the high 30s. The pitch played fairly true in the Australia-Bangladesh match – like most Chinnaswamy pitches do – but offered more grip to the slower bowlers than it usually does.Stats and trivia In the four T20Is between them so far, Bangladesh’s opening partnership against India has lasted between 2.2 and 4 overs while India has seen their opening partnership stay between 1.3 and 7.2 overs against Bangladesh.Quotes”Taskin Ahmed has been a very important bowler for them, but at the same time Mustafizur Rahman, who did not play 2-3 matches in between because of a side strain, he is back. Al-Amin is there. They have depth in bowling. Shakib Al Hasan is a very good allrounder, so I don’t think their bowling is weakened in any way because of one or two players not being there.”India pacer Ashish Nehra on whether Bangladesh were weakened by the absence of Taskin Ahmed</i

Lewis released from prison

Chris Lewis, the former England allrounder, has been released from prison after serving six years for drug smuggling.Lewis, 47, was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment in May 2009 for smuggling liquid cocaine valued at more than £140,000 into Britain hidden in fruit juice tins in his cricket bag. He was stopped at Gatwick airport after a flight from St Lucia the previous December.A former basketball player, Chad Kirnon, was also found guilty.”On a physical level jail has not been hard,” Lewis said after his release from High Down Prison in Surrey. “It’s a hard mental exercise to stop yourself from thinking negatively. For 24 hours a day you’re a prisoner. It’s nice to be back – and I don’t mean being outside – I mean back being me.”Far from excluding Lewis from its midst, English cricket – in the guise of the Professional Cricketers Association – plans to work with him to educate young players. Lewis will speak to first year county professionals at next year’s PCA Rookie Camp and also join the PCA team on the Association’s programme of pre-season county visits. This is the latest example of the PCA’s willingness to rehabilitate former cricketers who have committed a crime by involving them in education processes. Mervyn Westfield, who was found guilty of spot fixing, has also addressed young professionals about the dangers.Lewis, born in Guyana, retired from county cricket in 2000 after playing 32 Tests and 53 ODIs. Widely regarded as a talented maverick. He last played first-class cricket the summer before his arrest when he attempted a Twenty20 comeback with Surrey. He worked for Nottingham City Council and was also involved with coaching in Slough when he retired in 2000 but admitted he became afraid of what the future held and he ended up making poor decisions that led to him being jailed.”You are playing cricket, perhaps even hoping to get back into the England team, and within the space of a few months it’s actually all over,” he said. “There wasn’t a great deal of information around then for young players about what they should be doing or trying to do.”Yes, you heard the stories about having to plan for your future because cricket doesn’t last forever but what does that mean?”At the time I thought that planning was taking out a pension or taking out a life insurance which are things that I actually did. Standing here now you know planning is a lot more and it takes a lot more time and effort.”You try different things to try to generate cash. You are not talking about the same level of cash as when you played. You are talking about a level of cash that, now you are living a normal life – to sort that out. Coming back to play T20 for Surrey, that didn’t work and at the same time the old hips played up.”I had spent a bit of money. I had been away to Australia to train to try to get fit to come back to do the Twenty20 so money had been spent and nothing had been earned. I became afraid of what the future held and at that point the thinking actually went awry.Chris Lewis will work with the PCA educating young players after his release from prison•Getty Images

“I made choices that I shouldn’t have made and that were the wrong choices and that, in the end. I should say sorry for because they were the wrong choices, and I do say sorry for.”Jason Ratcliffe, assistant chief executive of the PCA, has remained in contact with Lewis throughout his time in prison and hopes that Lewis’s willingness to speak about his experiences will help current county players.”Whilst we can’t ever condone the trouble Chris got himself into, it’s our duty to help our members wherever we can,” Ratcliffe said. “It’s time to move forward and his story will prove to be a strong message for all current and future professional cricketers.”Lewis has been quick to express his gratitude. “The PCA has been extremely supportive right from the beginning of this situation,” he said. “Going ahead, I would like to become a part of that, whether it’s giving advice or whether it’s just tugging on the grey matter to find out what happened at this particular time.”If any of that can help any young player going ahead I am in. I am in 100 per cent.”As his career drew to a close, Lewis made revelations in the News of the World about spot-fixing within the England Test team, also claiming that he been offered money on behalf of Indian bookmakers to help fix an England vs New Zealand match at Old Trafford. He was not in the side at the time.

'Players have let Peter Moores down' – Moles

Andy Moles has expressed his sympathy for Peter Moores, suggesting England’s players “let him down” during the World Cup campaign.Moles, the Afghanistan coach, will be doing everything he can to inflict more pain on Moores and co when the two sides meet at the SCG on Friday. But as a man who knows the pain of a coach’s life – he was sacked by Scotland and New Zealand – Moles was keen to show solidarity with a fellow coach.”I hear the criticism of Peter,” Moles said. “But as a coach, I feel sorry for him. We do what we can, but ultimately when they cross the line, the players have to do the job.”The players have just underperformed. It just looked to me as if the players have let themselves down, and importantly, let the coach down. That’s not to say that Peter’s place won’t come up under scrutiny. But I feel sorry for him. He’s obviously worked hard, and I hear from the players that they feel that they’ve let him and other people down.”It’s a collective thing. The coach doesn’t win, the players don’t win. Everybody has to take collective ability. Really, they need to have a look at themselves and there obviously need to be some changes. But I think the big thing is not to rush into anything. They need to take stock.”Such is England’s fragile state, though, that Moles knows his side have an opportunity to pull off a victory against a Full Member side and finish their campaign above them in the table.”We believe that we’ve got a shot in us,” Moles said. “We came here expecting to surprise somebody. We nearly got it right with Sri Lanka, and if we can be consistent and do the things well at the right times, I still believe that we have a shot in us. But we’ll have to be at our very best and we’ll need England to be below par. Everybody has an equal chance.”The suggestion that both teams have an “equal chance” might be the perfect illustration of how far England have fallen and how far Afghanistan have progressed. But as far as Moles – referred to as “Mole” by fast bowler Hamid Hassan throughout the press conference – is concerned, Afghanistan are at the start of their cricketing journey. With the enthusiasm that exists for the sport in the country, he is confident progress will continue. The only thing they require is more fixtures.”The one thing that we’ve got that some of the other Associate sides don’t have, is a group of 20 or 25 players from under-19 level. And in that group there are probably eight to ten very, very exciting youngsters. Three of them are good seamers.”There is huge passion and our facilities are adequate. We’ve got indoor cricket now. We’ve got an academy that could improve, but it’s adequate. We don’t need so much in the way of new machinery and things like that.”What we need are fixtures. We want to win friends and impress people through this tournament.”Afghanistan is not just a war-torn area. It’s a promising group of cricketers. If we can persuade people to give us the opportunity to play against them in the UAE where we played our home games, then I think that will be the best way that our players can move forward and get better.”They’re a very passionate group of cricketers that have huge pride in their performance for the fans at home. That’s something that drives them.”The secret of the World Cup is in the name. We should be getting more teams to play, so hopefully the ICC will go back to their board meeting and re-examine their decision.”We need the opportunity to play more. I speak on behalf of the nations just below us as well. What we desperately deserve is opportunity.”

Felipe Melo, graças a efeito suspensivo, poderá atuar. O time fará mais dois treinos, na sexta e no sábado, antes de seguir para o Rio de Janeiro (RJ). O embate, válido pela 17ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, está marcado para as 16h.
